Slovenia is a small country with lots of mountains, and about 60% of its land is green forests. With a population of over 2 million, the country is home to around 11,000 beekeepers.
Erik is one of the beekeepers there. His family has a long history of beekeeping—his father, grandfather, and even his great-grandfather are all beekeepers. At first, he just planned to work in news, but later the sound of the beehives (蜂箱) pulled him back to his family’s tradition.
In the bee yard, Erik stands quietly by his beehives, listening to the soft song of wings. Bees are everything to him: his work, his joy and his duty. Every year from March to September, Erik follows his bees, moving beehives and collecting honey. He often says, “We keep bees with heart. It’s not just a job; it’s a relationship.”
Although technology (科技) helps Erik check (检查) honey from far away, he believes human care is key. Erik still opens each beehive every ten days by hand and checks bees to make sure they are healthy. No robot can do it, and maybe there never will be.
Bees play an important role in people’s lives in Slovenia. When a baby is born, families light beeswax (蜂蜡) candles. They do the same when someone dies. Bees stay with people through their happy and sad moments.
23. What do we know about Slovenia?
A. It is a big country with forests. B. Half of the land is deserts.
C. The country has a population of 11,000. D. There are many mountains in the country.

C. The sweet smell of honey. D. The high price of honey.
25. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A The best time to collect honey. B. Erik’s family tradition.
C. Erik’s love for beekeeping. D. The importance of bees.
26. What does Erik think of new technology for beekeeping?
A. He believes robots can do anything. B. He treasures human care more.
C. He thinks it is the most useful. D. He is totally against it.
27. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Bees are part of people’s lives in Slovenia.
B. Bees work together and show great teamwork.
C. Bees are important to the ecosystem in Slovenia.
D. Bees can understand human feelings.

Running is good exercise, but some people often say, “Running is bad for the knees.” They think running will cause arthritis, making them walk with difficulty when they get old. But is that true?
Well, the truth is that running isn’t bad for the knees as long as people do it in the right way. In fact, running can keep the knees strong and healthy. A study in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise found out that runners had fewer knee problems than walkers. Why? Running helps build up muscles and cartilage around the knee joint. Compared with running, walking is easier on the knees. It doesn’t exercise the muscles around the knees or build up the joint the same way running does.
Another study followed marathon runners before and after their races. The result was pretty surprising: the runners’ knee cartilage was stronger after the race, and they had a lower chance of developing arthritis than those who didn’t run at all.
Actually, running itself isn’t bad for our knees, but if we don’t do it right, it can cause problems. Here are the main things to watch out for. First, run with bad form. Taking too big steps or letting knees bend inward are both bad for the knees. Second, overuse the knees. Running too much, too fast, or without rest can cause knee problems. Third, run on hard ground. It is bad for the knees, especially if we’re doing long runs or running very fast.
But don’t worry. To keep our knees healthy while running, we just need to train smart. Small changes in our running habits can make a big difference.
28 How does the writer start the passage?
A. By using a saying. B. By introducing a sport.
C. By showing an opinion. D. By sharing an experience.
29. Which question does paragraph 2 answer?
A. How can people run in the right way? B. When did the researchers do the study?
C. What knee problems do runners often have? D. Why is running better for the knees than walking?
30. What did the second study show?
A. People who never ran had healthier knees.
B. Running could strengthen the knee cartilage.
C. Training was very important for marathon runners.
D. Runners had a higher chance of developing arthritis.
31. What is the main idea of paragraph 4?
A. What causes knee problems. B. What to do during long runs.
C. How to warm up before running. D. How running affects knee health.
32. What will the writer probably talk about next?
A. The benefits of running. B. The best time for running.
C. Common running mistakes we make. D. Tips for safe running.

Everybody knows that Earth spins (自转) from west to east. That is to say, it appears to be turning counterclockwise (逆时针) rapidly when viewed from above the North Pole. But what if Earth started spinning the other way?
Scientists from Germany have made a computer simulation (模拟) in which Earth spins in the opposite direction—clockwise when viewed from above the North Pole. This showed them some interesting things about the weather and geography on Earth, Live Science reported.
As Earth spins in a counterclockwise direction, it shapes certain ocean currents (洋流). The direction of ocean currents, together with winds, produces different weather around the globe. But a backward spin changes the ocean currents and winds. ________ Western areas of the lands on Earth cool down as the eastern parts warm up. Winters become even colder in northwestern Europe, while eastern Russia becomes warmer than before. Rain no longer falls on the planet’s wettest places.
Another result of a backward spin is that Earth becomes greener. Scientists found that global desert areas have reduced from 42 million square kilometers to 31 million square kilometers. This may have something to do with the changing weather. Therefore, you can see rich green landscapes from Central Africa to the Middle East, which are mostly covered by deserts now. More surprisingly, the Sahara Desert becomes an oasis.
However, deserts don’t disappear. They just appear in some places in which they never appeared before. Deserts would cover North America, where countries like the United States and Canada lie. Sand dunes (沙丘) would replace the Amazon rainforest in South America.
A backward spin would keep the main features of Earth’s geography, such as the size, shapes and positions of lands and oceans. But it would change the interactions (相互作用) between circulating (环流的) air, ocean and geography, lead scientist Florian Ziemen told Live Science.
33. When viewed from above the North Pole, what direction does Earth spin in the simulation?
A. West to east. B. East to west. C. Counterclockwise. D. From north to south.
34. Which of the following sentences can be put in ________ of Paragraph 3?
A. Anyway deserts cover the planet. B. Therefore, the weather is different.
C. However the positions of oceans change. D. Surprisingly the area of land is larger.
35. What would a backward spin bring to Earth?
A. The direction of ocean currents and winds would be different.
B. Rain would no longer fall on western areas of the lands on Earth.
C. Deserts would become larger and cover the planet’s wettest places.
D. The size, shapes and positions of lands and oceans would be changed.
36. What does the underlined word “oasis” probably mean?
A. a dry and sandy area with little water. B. a green area with water in a desert.
C. a large area covered with tall trees. D. a cold area covered with ice and snow.
37. Which of the following is the right structure of the passage?
A. ①—②—③④—⑤⑥ B. ①—②—③④⑤—⑥
C. ①—②③④⑤—⑥ D. ①②—③—④—⑤⑥

阅读下面短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
In ancient times, people often wrote stories about “talking trees”. These trees were usually slow-moving but wise. You might not think such stories are real, but it turns out that trees can really “communicate”!
A scientist named Suzanne Simard discovered this at the end of the 20th century. She studied forests and noticed something interesting: trees that grew alone had shorter lives than those in groups. To find out if trees shared food and helped each other, she and her team did the research.
The scientists put some trees into two groups. One group grew away from sunlight, so they couldn’t make their own food. The other group had special CO2 to help them make food. The scientists put a “tracker” in the CO2 to see where the food went.
The result was amazing! The trees with special CO2 sent food to the ones without sunlight. Then Suzanne found out that trees can actually communicate. But how do they do it? The answer is the fungus around tree roots. The fungus connects many trees together, like a big net. Trees use this net to send food and messages to each other.
Today, Suzanne keeps studying this “net”. Her work helps us understand not only how forests work but also how trees stay alive when things get hard. This is really important for our ecosystem!
48. What were the “talking trees” like in ancient stories?
