At the age of 25, David Puglia’s life drastically changed. It started when his health severely declined. After a number of medical consultations, David finally got an answer: He had accumulated spinal fluid (积液) in his neck. Medical professionals were able to provide a solution. Unfortunately, that solution involved a highly invasive 12-hour surgical procedure, not to mention the fact that it seemed likely the fluid was caused by a brain tumor (肿瘤).
Thankfully, David did not have a brain tumor after all. The fluid around his neck was also successfully drained. That said, David was met with a new issue: his fingers have no feeling. This made everyday tasks much more strenuous, including buttoning up his own shirt, something he was required to do frequently for his job. “During a work trip, he had to ask a stranger to help him in buttoning his shirt,” his brother, Michael, shares with InspireMore. “He felt very awful.”
However, it inspired David to think outside of the box. If he was struggling like this, there was no way he was alone. So, for the sake of his own independence, and that of others, he got to work creating an alternative. Best of all, Michael helped turn his vision into a reality!
This resulted in the creation of the Magnetic Button. It has changed David’s life for the better, but he’s not the only one who has benefited from their hard work. This product is available for others to order online, too! This has been life-changing, and both David and Michael hope to see these magnetic buttons continue to help folks from all around the world.
“To this day, David’ s fingers are numb (麻木的) and need the Magnetic Button every day for work,” Michael shares. “I hope that we can increase awareness and distribution of our product, making it more accessible to those who could benefit from it.”
24. What does the underlined word “strenuous” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Difficult. B. Meaningless. C. Unavoidable. D. Boring.
25. What drove David to create the Magnetic Button?
A. His brother’s encounter. B. A familiar doctor’s advice.
C. His love for invention. D. An embarrassing experience.
26. What will be the focus of David’s work in the future?
A. Improving the design of the Magnetic Button.
B. Finding a cure for his numb fingers.
C. Promoting the Magnetic Button.
D. Developing more products.
27. Which words can best describe David?
A. Humorous and helpful. B. Optimistic and creative.
C. Ambitious and honest. D. Responsible and grateful.

Seabird colony (群体) survey data collected over 55 years was used to estimate the number of birds nesting on the 280 atolls in the Indo-Pacific. The study, published in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution, also measures the nutrient contribution of the birds to the ecosystem.
Atolls are ring-shaped coral reef islands that enclose a lagoon (环礁湖). They form when a dead volcano sinks lower, leaving behind the coral reef that has grown around its edge. Of the about 440 atolls in the world, most are in the Pacific Ocean. Their combined surface area only makes up about 0. 02% of the total island area in the Indo-Pacific region.
However the new study shows that their importance to seabirds far outweighs their relatively small total area. “We calculate that over 31 million seabirds — about 25% of the world's tropical seabirds — are nesting on atolls,” says first author Sebastian Steibl from the University of Auckland in New Zealand. “At least 14 seabird species have more than half of their global populations nesting on atolls.” This is also just a small part of historical populations using the atolls for breeding and nesting.
The authors also note the importance of seabirds and, by extension, the atolls they rely on for the broader ecosystem. “Seabirds are globally important mediators (媒介) of ecological connectivity between land and sea,” they write. “They transport nutrients in the form of bird droppings from marine feeding grounds to their nesting sites.”
The research highlights the importance of conserving seabird colonies and the atolls amid growing environmental challenges such as warming oceans and rising sea levels. “Protecting atolls is therefore not only important for seabird conservation — in turn, seabirds on atolls are also supporting the functioning of the atolls themselves, which might be key to building resilience (适应力) against climate change,” Steibl says.
“Many atoll islands that bear legacies of colonial exploitation are today uninhabited,” says Steibl. “Building on the here-established global importance of atolls for seabird conservation, these uninhabited atoll islands offer themselves as main target sites for future seabird conservation and restoration plans.”
28. What does the new study show?
A. Atolls are formed by volcano eruption. B. Atolls are important for seabirds.
C. The ecosystems of the Indo-Pacific are threatened. D. Seabirds in the Pacific are facing extinction.
29. What can we know about seabirds from paragraph 4?
A. They transport nutrients from the sea to land. B. They act as mediators for plants on atolls.
C. They protect coral reefs from warming up. D. They control fish populations near atolls.
30. What probably poses the biggest threat to the atolls at present?
A. Ocean pollution. B. Fishing ships.
C. Volcanic activities. D. Climate change.
31. Why are the atoll islands suitable for seabird conservation?
A. They serve as many colonial habitats for animals.
B. They have no sea animals threatening seabirds.
C. They are unaffected by human activities.
D. They have larger lagoons for nesting.
D
When you listen to music, it’s not just your ears that are engaged. The areas of your brain responsible for emotion and memory also become active. The hippocampus (海马体), essential for memories, works closely with the amygdala (杏仁体), the brain’s emotional center. This explains why some songs are both memorable and emotional. Given music’s ability to evoke emotions and trigger memories, we supposed it could alter the emotional content of existing memories, through the process of memory reactivation.
To test this, we conducted a three-day experiment. On the first day, participants memorized neutral stories. The next day, they recalled the stories while listening to positive, negative music, or in silence, with fMRI (功能性磁共振成像) scans recording their brain activity. On the final day, they recalled the stories without music. The results were remarkable. When recalling neutral stories, participants listening to emotionally charged music were more likely to add new emotional elements into the story that matched the mood of the music.
The brain scans from the experiment were even more interesting. When participants recalled stories with music, there was increased activity in the hippocampus and amygdala. This is why a song associated with a significant life event can feel so powerful — it activates both emotion-and memory-processing regions at the same time. We also observed strong communication between these emotional memory processing areas of the brain and the areas involved in visual sensory processing. This suggests that music might add emotional details into memories while participants are visually imagining the stories.
Our findings indicate that music serves as an emotional lure (诱饵) becoming intertwined with memories and subtly altering their emotional tone. For people dealing with conditions such as depression or PTSD (创伤后应激障碍), where negative memories can be overwhelming, carefully chosen music might help reconstruct those memories in a more positive light and potentially reduce their negative emotional impact over time. It also paves new paths for exploring music-based interventions in the treatment of depression and other mental health conditions.
32. What is the purpose of the experiment?
A. To illustrate an argument. B. To draw a comparison.
C. To clarify a misconception. D. To confirm an assumption.
33. What can be inferred from paragraph 3?
A. Music-aided memories are richer. B. Music makes life more powerful.
C. Brain areas work independently. D. Music has little impact on brain.
34. What’s the author’s attitude toward the potential of music in mental health treatment?
A. Skeptical. B. Positive. C. Indifferent. D. Negative.
35. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. Music Can Alter the Emotional Tone of Memory B. Music Can Separate Emotions from Memory
C. Music Can Promote Brain Activity D. Music Can Help Improve Memory

The morning air was cool as climbers walked up the mountain trail (小路). Excitement filled the group, their laughter echoing through the trees. Among them, Mike and his three closest friends — Ali, Jack, and Henry — were determined to be the first to reach the top.
After a long and tiring climb, they finally stood at the summit. A breathtaking view stretched before them — rolling green hills fading into the horizon, a sparkling river winding (蜿蜒) through the valley below, and clouds moving slowly across the vast blue sky. The boys stood in amazement, letting the cool breeze brush against their faces. “This is amazing,” Mike whispered, unable to take his eyes off the view.
They spent some time enjoying the peaceful moment, taking pictures, and sharing snacks. However, as the afternoon sun began its slow descent (下降), Mike called out, “Time to head back down before it gets too late!”
Reluctantly (勉强地), the group began their descent. The trail was steep, but the boys moved quickly — until something caught their attention. Along the path were strange and beautiful stones, each with its unique shape and pattern. “Look at this one! It’s shaped like a star!” Jack exclaimed, holding a small, smooth stone.
“This one looks like a dinosaur tooth!” Henry added, putting it into his pocket.
Fascinated, the boys started searching for more. They picked up stones of different colors, comparing their finds and laughing at the funny shapes. Time slipped by unnoticed as they wandered along the trail, filling their backpacks with their treasures.
It wasn’t until Tom looked up that they realized it was too late. Worse still, at some point, dark clouds gathered, and a gust of wind blew through, making the trees rustle (沙沙作响). In an instant, light rain began to fall from the sky.
“It’s starting to rain!” Ali complained.
Mike frowned, adjusting to the weight of his stone-filled backpack. “We need to hurry up before the rain gets heavier,” he said.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Break Bad Habits, Embrace New Life
Good morning, everyone!
I used to be a chronic procrastinator, often leaving my homework until the last minute and staying up late to finish it. This not only affected my sleep quality but also led to my poor academic performance. To break this bad habit, I started using a planner to schedule my tasks and set specific deadlines for each one. Additionally, I divided large tasks into smaller, more manageable steps and rewarded myself after completing each part.
Now, I would like to encourage all of you to identify your bad habits and take action to change them. Remember, small steps lead to big changes. Let’s support one another and embrace a new, better life together!
Thank you!
第二节(满分25分)
【67题答案】
【答案】They hiked down well and fast, but suddenly Mike slipped and hurt his ankle. They had to stop because Mike’s left ankle swelled up and it hurt a lot when he put his left foot on the ground. It was just then that the rain got heavier, and their limbs were numb with cold. To make matters worse, the dim light made it hard for them to recognize the trail, which would increase the danger if they continued. A wave of fear and anxiety swept over the boys. “What should we do?” Mike cried out in a trembling voice.
After some thought, Ali came up with an idea. He put Mike on his back with Henry keeping them balanced beside them and Jack leading the way. And they took turns to carry Mike if one felt tired. The cold rain was pounding on them, and sweat dripped down their cheeks, but they dared not stop because they were fully aware that the later it got, the more challenges and dangers they might meet. They were racing against time! They took every step cautiously, and finally they reached the bottom of the mountain safely.
