Not only should we study hard, but we should also study smart. The following four books are trying to serve this purpose.
Ultralearning
By Scott H.Young
Learn a new talent, reinvent yourself, and adapt to whatever the workplace throws your way in this guide. Ultralearning offers nine strategies to master hard skills quickly by sharing the latest research about the most effective learning methods and the stories of other ultralearners like Scott himself.
A Mind for Numbers
By Barbara Oakley
If you struggled through math and slept through science, there’s hope. In A Mind for Numbers, Dr. Oakley lets us in on the secrets to learning effectively - secrets that even successful students wish they’d known earlier. The learning strategies in this book apply not only to math and science, but to any subject in which we struggle.
Learn More, Study Less
By Scott H.Young
In Learn More, Study Less, the author describes what he calls “holistic learning”, a secret to learning faster. Holistic learning is the process of learning by making connections. Most students try to memorize information by repeating ideas. This can work — but it’s slow. Holistic learners try to link ideas together. This forms a web of knowledge that can allow you to remember things you’d otherwise forget.

A year after Walt Disney made history with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, his artists were struggling to find the right design for the woodland backgrounds of Bambi, the tale of a young deer. The film’s production team realized they needed an alternative to the style that highlighted almost all of the leaves, flowers and mushrooms in the woods of Snow White.
Soon they got their inspiration from Tyrus Wong, whose work was on display as a new exhibit at New York City’s Museum of Chinese in America. In 1938, the Walt Disney Studios hired him to draw the frames between the main drawings of the animators. After reading the story of Bambi, he saw an opportunity to break out of his dull job. He said to himself “This is all outdoor scenery. And I’m a landscape painter. This will be great!”
Inspired by Chinese landscape paintings, he used watercolour and pastel (蜡笔) to make sketches that brought the feeling of forest scenes with simple strokes of colour and special attention to light and shadow. Wong’s sketches attracted Disney and became the guide for Bambi’s background artists, who were later trained to imitate his style. “His expression was a great leap forward for the medium,” wrote John Lasseter, the chief creative officer for Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios. “Where other films were literal, Bambi was expressive and emotional.” In 2001, Wong was named “Disney Legend”, and he received the recognition as the true lead artist.
He pursued art all his life and still made art during his retirement, including toy animals from recycled materials and handmade kites that he regularly flew off the Santa Monica Pier in California. “People admired his work because of Bambi, but Bambi was just a really small part of his life,” said his youngest daughter. “He considered himself not a great artist but a lucky artist, who was at the right place at the right time.”
4. Why did Walt Disney’s artists notice Tyrus Wong?
A. He was good at drawing cartoon characters.
B. His works focused on Chinese animated characters.
C. His style was suitable for the woods of Bambi.
D. He won a prize at a museum in New York.
5. What can we say about Tyrus Wong’s artistic style?
A. It highlighted almost all the leaves and flowers in the woods.
B. It captured the essence of the forest through some techniques.
C. It focused on rich details and clear outlines of the forest.
D. It was inspired by the style of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
6. Which words can best describe Tyrus Wong?
A. Ambitious and competitive.
B. Innovative and modest.
C. Practical and cautious.
D. Determined and conservative.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A Tyrus Wong: The Vision Behind Bambi
B. Disney’s Best Artist: Tyrus Wong
C. The Unsung Hero of Disney’s Golden Age
D. The Chinese Art in Western Animation

When two different traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) physicians see the same patient, they can have opposing views on the patient’s diagnosis and treatment plan. To address this subjectivity problem, Kon Wen Xuan, a recent graduate from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore with a double degree in Biomedical Sciences & Chinese Medicine, started an AI research project. The project aimed to guide practitioners, particularly students and new professionals, on how to deal with diseases they are unfamiliar with.
“So a physician might just input the symptoms and the AI can immediately predict a diagnosis and suggest a prescription,” Wen Xuan explains.
Wen Xuan processed patient data from the NTU TCM clinic and used it to train machine-learning models. He processed 50,000 records, of which about 9,000 were usable. Transforming the raw information into a system readable by AI was a time-consuming task. He carefully categorized symptoms to maintain consistency in data interpretation.
The AI was better at answering simple questions like whether the patient is “heaty” and predicting simple disease sub-categories. But it faced difficulties when things got more complex. Its reliance on the limited data it was fed also posed significant challenges. The diversity of conditions in the data, totaling around 130 diseases, also raised concerns about whether there was enough data for certain illnesses.
Considerations of AI use are crucial. “Who will be responsible if a patient is wrongly diagnosed?” Wen Xuan asks. He envisions the AI tool as a supportive reference to aid students and new TCM professionals, rather than as replacement for practitioners. He also emphasizes the need for standardization in training AI. “An expert group should decide what data to use and how to train the AI,” says Wen Xuan.
Wen Xuan plans to enhance his AI research, believing there is interdisciplinary potential for the research. “Western medicine practitioners can potentially use the AI tool to understand how TCM works and also do research in this area,” he explains.
8. Why did Wen Xuan conduct the project?
A. To develop a new type of medicine.
B. To create a database for patient records.
C. To provide training for TCM students.
D. To help TCM practitioners with informed advice.
9. What was the problem when using AI for the project?
A. It failed to provide quick responses.
B. It struggled with complex conditions.
C. It had difficulty in simplifying the answer.
D It was unable to process raw information effectively.
10. What does Wen Xuan suggest about standardizing AI training?
A. Getting an expert team to offer guidelines.
B Enabling the AI to collect information online.
C. Focusing the training on the most common diseases.
D. Training the AI with data from experienced practitioners.
11. What is a possible benefit of Wen Xuan’s AI research?
A. AI could replace some Western medicine practices.
B. AI could be used to perform challenging operations.
C. Western medicine industry could be advanced by AI.
D. Western doctors could employ AI to understand TCM.

Before 2024, there was barely a whisper about it. Now the concept of “food noise” seems to be everywhere on social media; a quick TikTok search, for instance, finds that videos related to “food noise explained” attracted 1.8 billion views as of this summer. Coined to name the experience of thinking about food, longing for food, planning our next meal and so on, “food noise” describes some of the most basic human drives: hunger, appetite, longing. But now these are being seen as problems, rather than features. We should resist this definition.
To call something noise is to go beyond describing it: It’s to prove the normative claim that simply loving food, letting food occupy our thoughts and responding to our hunger is suspect. It isn’t.
The pleasure we take from food is an important human good. Food connects us to ourselves, and with each other, and there is real harm in teaching people to view the pleasure they take from such fare as a problem. Famed English food writer Nigella Lawson earlier this year wrote in a post that she “couldn’t stomach the silence of life without food noise.” One commenter responded in agreement: “I believe it is called ’food music.’”
Some people who identify with the term “food noise” experience genuinely intense food thoughts, as well as engaging in harmful behaviors such as bingeing (大吃大喝). But according to experts, these problems are often rooted in restriction. In other words, food noise is what may happen when you’re not eating enough to satisfy your appetite, often under the pressures of diet culture, by normalizing restrictive eating.
And for any of us, the joy and pleasure and comfort of food should not be discounted. We need to eat to live, of course, but it goes beyond that; to live to eat has long given many of us meaning and community as well as sustenance. Food noise should not be treated as a problem. Rather, we might call it “food music,” and dance to it.
12. What can we learn about food noise from the first paragraph?
A. It was quite popular before 2024.
B. It has gained negative implications.
C. It has many supporters as a fashion.
D. It was invented by social media users.
13. What does the underlined word “stomach” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Bear. B. Appreciate. C. Break. D. Quiet.
14. Why do people experience food noise according to experts?
A. They had a larger appetite before.
B. They try to stay away from diet culture.
C. They avoid reasonable thoughts on food.
D. They intentionally eat less than necessary.
15. What does the author think of food noise?
A. It may contribute to building communities.
B. It can help us handle food problems.
C. It should be accepted with joy.
D. It hardly gives meaning to our lives.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
“It’s good to be sociable! It’s good to be confident! It’s good to be loud!” ____16____ Very often, the qualities of extroverts (性格外向者) — activeness, quick decision-making and teamwork, for example — are valued more than the shy, serious and sensitive qualities of introverts. Susan Cain calls this attitude the “Extrovert Ideal”. In her book, Cain shows how this ideal shapes modern schools and workplaces. ____17____ In Europe and the USA, people are put in shared offices so that they can work in teams. Students and workers are also expected to be confident and talkative.
Why are the needs of introverts ignored in this way when introverts have so much to offer? Introverts need less excitement around them than extroverts. ____18____ Many of the world’s greatest ideas, art and inventions have been produced by introverts. The artist Vincent van Gogh and the physicist Albert Einstein were introverts.
____19____ Angelina Jolie, a hugely successful actor, supports charities that help people in need. She describes herself as an introvert, saying she loves to spend time alone or with small groups of people. And despite the huge success of his social networking site, Mark Zuckerberg, the co-founder of Facebook, remains a private person who doesn’t like speaking in public.
But let’s not forget that we need extroverts too. Introverts can come up with great ideas, but they also need help in communicating those ideas to the world. Songwriters need singers. Designers need salespeople. _____20_____
A. There are some famous introverts in modern times.
B. It’s true, but that doesn’t make them less exciting people.
C. In other words, extroverts and introverts need each other.
D. Desks in classrooms are pushed together for student group work.
E. Creative people are both introverted and extroverted at different times.
F. Cain’s main goal is to change the way in which the world views introverts.
G. In her book Quiet, Susan Cain points out how deeply this belief is held by society.

12-year-old Oliver caught sight of a beautiful scarf in a shop window. He thought it would be a perfect gift for his mother who always tirelessly tended to the family, but the 40-dollar price tag (标签) was far beyond what he could afford. Oliver couldn't ask his father for the money. His father worked long hours at a garage (汽车修理厂), and every penny he earned went towards supporting the family. His mother, a kind and gentle woman, was always busy with housework and taking care of him and his younger brother. She often put her own desires aside for the well-being of the family. Nevertheless, Oliver stepped into the shop. Standing tall in his old, washed-out school uniform, he approached the shopkeeper and pointed to the scarf. “Madam, I really like this scarf, but I don’t have the money right now. Could you hold it for me?” The shopkeeper, a middle-aged woman with a warm smile, nodded. “I’ll keep it for you, but not for too long.” Oliver thanked her and left.
He remembered seeing some old newspapers and bottles in the neighborhood that people often threw away. He could collect them and sell them to the recycling station. For weeks, Oliver worked secretly to earn the money. Every morning before school, he would search the neighborhood for old newspapers and empty bottles. He’d carefully collect them in a large bag and then make his way to the recycling station, where Mr. Thompson, the friendly worker, always greeted him with a cheerful “Good morning, Oliver! You're here early today.” Oliver would smile back and hand over his collection. Mr. Thompson would count the items, give Oliver the money, and sometimes even throw in an extra coin or two, saying, “For your hard work, young man.” With each trip to the recycling station, Oliver’s savings grew.

D. It was unable to process raw information effectively.
10. What does Wen Xuan suggest about standardizing AI training?
A. Getting an expert team to offer guidelines.
B. Enabling the AI to collect information online.
【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. D

B It has gained negative implications.
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. D 15. C

Dear Jamie,
I’m sorry to learn that you are currently struggling with your Chinese learning and find it challenging to fulfill the final exam paper. Worried as I am, I’m afraid I couldn’t just do it for you.
I know exactly how it feels when the final is around the corner, and you may find yourself insecure and incompetent owing to the excessive stress. In fact, I myself sometimes suffer from this kind of panic attack before exams as well. To me, listening to some music and having a talk with my teacher will always help. Plus, I’m convinced that the task is designed to evaluate your grasp of the language so that the teacher could make proper adjustments in teaching based on your performance. Thus, honest feedback is necessary.
Anyway, I will always be there for you and I believe with the hard work, you will excel in the exam without doubt!

【答案】例文
One sunny afternoon, Oliver counted the coins and realized he had enough. He jumped up, took his small bag, and rushed out of the house. His heart pounded with excitement as he hurried back to the shop. When he entered, the shopkeeper looked up and smiled. “You’re back! I was starting to think you’d changed your mind.” Oliver handed over the money, his eyes fixed on the beautiful scarf that still hung in its place behind the counter. “Here you are,” he said, a huge smile spreading across his face. The shopkeeper carefully packed up the scarf and handed it to him. “Take good care of it,” she said.
Oliver thanked the shopkeeper and rushed home, holding the package with both hands. When Oliver got home, his mother was cooking in the kitchen. He took a deep breath, walked up to her, and said, “Mom, close your eyes.” Confused, she did as he asked. Oliver gently placed the scarf around her neck. “Open your eyes now,” he said, his voice filled with excitement. “Where did you get this?” she cried out. Oliver told her about his recycling story. Her face softening, she hugged him tightly. “Oh, my dear, you’ve worked so hard for this. Thank you!” she said, tears welling up in her eyes. Oliver realized at that moment that love and the efforts to bring joy were truly priceless.
