Finding and Losing Troy
Was Troy a real place or just a story? For years, many people thought it was just a myth (神话). But a German named Heinrich Schliemann believed it was real. His strong belief helped him make some very important discoveries.
As a boy, Schliemann loved reading. His favorite book was The Iliad, a book about the great war at Troy. The brave heroes and strong walls in the story interested him deeply. He promised himself that one day he would find the lost city of Troy.
However, life first took him in a different direction. He became a successful businessman, traveled to many different places around the world, learned several languages, and made a lot of money.
In his late forties, he finally had enough money to follow his childhood dream. He traveled through Greece and Turkey to search for Troy. Hisarlik, an ancient Turkish site, caught his eye.
In 1871, he started digging at Hisarlik with a team of local workers. He soon became impatient with the slow work. To dig faster, he used dynamite. This sped up the excavation (挖掘) but also caused serious damage to the site.
Piece by piece, they uncovered weapons (武器), pottery (陶器) and many other ancient objects. These findings showed that Hisarlik had a history of over 5,000 years. It had been rebuilt many times. Schliemann believed one of these lost cities was Troy.
His discovery made him famous around the world. But not all historians think highly of him. Most of them thought his decision to use dynamite destroyed important parts of the ancient site forever.

My exchange trip to China felt like a fantasy movie. I had prepared by reading online about trips to China before yet my experience still surprised me.
My first big surprise happened in Suzhou, our first host city. I had heard it called the “Venice (威尼斯) of the East” and imagined a small town with quiet canals (运河). As soon as I stepped out of the railway station, I was shocked. Suzhou was so huge and modern! Our school stood near ancient canals, where I saw tall glass buildings next to old wooden boats. It felt strange to see both a “village” and a “city” in one place. This contrast (对比) made us look at the city with fresh eyes.
Later, we saw an even stronger contrast in Beijing. My host family lived near the hutongs. These narrow alleys were full of traditional life. Just a short walk away, modern skyscrapers rose into the sky. People say many hutongs are disappearing each year. How lucky we were to visit them!
After these surprises, of course, there were challenges. The biggest one was the language barrier. Simple words like “homework” or “bus stop” were sometimes hard to communicate. Translation apps became my best friends. They helped most of the time, though sometimes the results were funny.
Still, I met kindness everywhere. A stranger helped me find my way during a rainy day at the Summer Palace. A student at a cafe in Beijing spoke English so well that I almost forgot I was abroad. These moments showed me how friendly Chinese people were.
In the end this exchange trip was not just about studying; it was also about understanding a culture and making friends. I enjoyed every moment and truly can’t wait to visit China again!
31. What surprised the writer about Suzhou?
A. It was as quiet and small as a village.
B. It looked exactly like Venice in Italy.
C. There were no tall buildings at all.
D. It had both modern buildings and old waterways.
32. What was the biggest challenge the writer met in China?
A. Homework. B. Bus stop.
C. Language barrier. D. Translation apps.
33. What did the writer learn from the exchange trip according to the passage?
A. The trip helped understand a culture and make friends.
B. China is too modern and has no traditional places left.
C. Using a translation app is always perfect and easy.
D. Everyone in China speaks English very fluently.
34. If another exchange student is going to China, what might the writer suggest based on the passage?
A. Only visit big modern cities like Shanghai.
B. Be prepared for both surprises and challenges.
C. Avoid using translation apps because they are not helpful.
D. Stay only with people who speak perfect English.
35. Which of the following is the best title of the passage?
A. The contrast between Suzhou and Beijing.
B. My fantastic exchange trip to China.
C. The friendly and kind Chinese.
D. The challenges in my exchange trip.

Last week, our school held “Memory Challenge Week”, an activity to help students improve their memory skills. Many students took part and learned useful methods.
First, we learned about flashcards. Teachers showed us how to write keywords on one side and meanings on the other. We made our own flashcards for English and science. Second, we practiced mind mapping. We drew central topics and connected related ideas with branches. This helped us see links between different points. Third, we tried memory games like “Word chains” and “Number Recall”. Everyone enjoyed playing while training their brains.
The most popular activity was the “Ebbinghaus Review Plan”. We learned that reviewing within 9 hours after learning helps stop forgetting. Many students made their own review schedules. We also invited a memory expert to give a talk. He said, “Memory is like a muscle (肌肉)—the more you train it, the stronger it gets.”
Through posters and class sharing, everyone understood that good memory habits can make learning easier. Our teacher said, “If you use these methods every day, you will remember more and forget less.”

Teenagers and the Internet: A Balanced View
As teenagers growing up in the digital age, we experience both the advantages and challenges of the Internet.
On the positive side, we can take online courses to learn new skills and get study information easily. We also stay in touch with friends and make new ones who share our hobbies.
However, it has negative effects. We may spend too much time on social media, which distracts us from schoolwork. We can also be exposed to false information.
To use it wisely, we should set a daily time limit for screen time and learn to tell true information from false. In this way, we can enjoy the Internet’s benefits without its risks.
