Let’s get to know the largest bears on this planet!
Some facts about polar bears
DID YOU KNOW?
Weight
Colour
They are actually black, not white. For this reason, they can keep themselves warm in freezing climates. They appear white because their fur reflects sunlight.
Skills
They have an amazing sense of smell—they can smell a seal (海豹) from 30 km away!
They are excellent swimmers.
They can keep themselves warm even at very low temperatures.
Problems they face
Polar bears are facing serious problems. Here are the biggest ones they face today:
Sea ice is home to polar bears, but the area of sea ice is becoming smaller and smaller because of climate change. The Arctic (北极) is warming twice as fast as the rest of the world.
People throw waste into the sea, and that puts polar bears in danger. If they eat the waste, they will get sick.
Polar bears still face the danger of being killed by humans for their fur and body parts.
Things we can do
Polar bears need our help, and small actions like the following are helpful.
16. If a man is 60kg, how heavy is an adult polar bear?

For as long as I can remember, there was a jar (坛子) in my parents’ bedroom. Every night, my father would empty his pockets and drop his coins into it.
When the jar was full, Dad would sit at the kitchen table and roll the coins into paper before taking them to the bank. This was a special event. We put the coins in a small box between us in his old truck.
Every time we went to the bank, Dad would say, “Those coins will keep you out of the textile mill (纺织厂), son. You will do better than me.” Coming out of the bank, we would celebrate by eating in an ice cream shop.
Dad showed me the coins in his hand after the clerk gave him change. “When we get home, we’ll start filling the jar again,” he said happily. He always let me drop the first coins back into the empty jar. “You’ll go to college with these coins,” he said.
Years later after finishing college and moving away, I returned home and noticed the jar was gone. It had done its job. I realized how much Dad loved me and had taught me about hard work and hope.

Brian Linden, a lively American in his sixties, wears many hats—traveler, businessman, educator, writer, and founder of the Linden Centre in Yunnan. Having lived in a village near Dali for almost twenty years, he now proudly calls himself one of the “cool new Dali people”.
Growing up in Chicago, Brian first came to China in 1984. He received a scholarship (奖学金) from the Chinese government to study in Beijing. Deeply drawn to Chinese culture, he decided to build a bridge between cultures.
After visiting over 100 countries, he left his job in the U.S. and moved to China with his family in 2004, searching for a place to create a new way of life. He and his wife finally chose Xizhou, a historic town near Dali. “I love traditional Chinese architecture, and Xizhou is full of ancient buildings. The locals treat me like family,” Linden says.
With support from the local government, he turned a traditional Bai-style house into the Linden Centre. It runs cultural education programs for international students and opens half of its space to the public, encouraging communication between visitors and villagers. The centre also provides free weekly English classes and invites experts to share knowledge with the community.
Looking ahead, Linden hopes to do more to share China’s beauty with the world. “Our goal is to make Xizhou a window for foreigners to learn about China,” he says. “My story is, in many ways, a ‘Chinese dream.’”

China is building a new type of industrial (工业的) park to protect the environment. These parks use clean energy and smart technology. Their goal is to help the economy (经济) grow and keep the planet healthy. ①.
A good example is a large park in Liyang, Jiangsu. It has 77,000 square meters of solar panels (太阳能板). These panels create millions of kilowatt-hours of clean electricity every year. The park also uses wind and water power. An energy expert, Wu Wei, said these parks help businesses save energy and become more creative.
②. For example, the city of Changzhou plans to build more than 10 such parks by 2026. Shanghai and Beijing are also making similar plans. These projects require special power networks, and Changzhou has already spent a lot to build power systems for them.
China is also sharing its green ideas with the world. In Suzhou, a China-Singapore project has a building that uses solar and wind power. It meets high environmental standards (标准) from both the U.S. and Singapore. A Chinese company there used AI and smart technology to reduce a large amount of CO2. Its solutions are now helping more than 30 countries.
Supported by China’s climate goals for 2030 and 2060, progress in clean energy is changing how the country uses power. ③. An international expert, Erik Berglof, said China’s efforts are a model for the world.

If you have planned a trip during winter holiday, you may want to take some wonderful photos. But how? Well, here is some advice for you.
Turn back and smile.
While on the road, the moment you turn back with a smile is the most beautiful. Just walk away from the camera and do a turn-back. You can also pretend (假装) to hear your name called, turn back, and run your fingers through your hair.
Look away from the camera.
There are many ways for you to avoid looking at the camera. For example you can look into the sky and let the camera catch your side face. Looking out of the window is another good choice. If there is nothing to see, you can close your eyes and enjoy the quiet moment.
Take a back view photo.
Are you a little shy when facing the camera? Taking a back view photo is a good choice, which can leave room for imagination and bring a different feeling as well.

Let’s get to know the largest bears on this planet!
Some facts about polar bears

For as long as I can remember, there was a jar (坛子) in my parents’ bedroom. Every night, my father would empty his pockets and drop his coins into it.

Years later, after finishing college and moving away, I returned home and noticed the jar was gone.

With support from the local government, he turned a traditional Bai-style house into the Linden Centre. It runs cultural education programs for international students and opens half of its space to the public, encouraging communication between visitors and villagers. The centre also provides free weekly English classes and invites experts to share knowledge with the community.

例文
My Little Invention: A Bookmark Light
I often read in bed at night, but turning on the big light disturbs others. So I invented a simple bookmark light. It is made from a small LED, a thin battery and a paper clip. I fixed the LED and battery together with tape, then attached them to the clip. Now, I can clip it onto any book page. The tiny light shines just on my book, letting me read comfortably without bothering anyone. This small invention truly makes my life easier and more enjoyable.
