However, there’s still some confusion about what can and what can’t be recycled. With advances in technology, there are more things that can be recycled. COFFEE PODS(咖啡包) On average, Australians are using more than three million coffee pods per day, and about 1.5 million households have coffee machines. While the pods are disastrous for the environment, they can still be recycled. Nespresso has a free post-back program and drop-off points run by TerraCycle, so you can take the pods and directly drop off at Nespresso stores. LIGHT BULBS Rather than throwing light bulbs into the bin, some councils run specific recycling stations, which allow you to drop off these kinds of items. If you do regularly recycle household glass, remember all glass should be washed and have lids removed. PIZZA BOXES Normally, pizza boxes don’t make it into recycling because they’re covered in grease(油脂)and leftover bits of cheese. When a pizza box is too greasy, it won’t be made into a recycling processing plant. If possible, remove as much of the leftovers as you can before recycling. If the pizza box can’t be recycled, tear off the lid which can still be recycled. HOUSEHOLD BATTERIES Household batteries can also be recycled. Batteries that do end up in landfills can cause a serious problem to the environment as they can release poisonous chemicals into the soil which are harmful to both humans and animals. Button-cell batteries, which are used in hearing aids and watches, can also be recycled. 36. Why does TerraCycle run the free post-back program and drop-off points? A. To produce the best coffee. B. To recycle coffee pods effectively. C. To encourage people to drink coffee. D. To offer some families coffee machines. 37. What needs to be done when recycling household glass? A. Clean it with water. B. Send it to the nearby store. C. Pack it well with paper. D. Keep the lid of the glass closed. 38. What should people do first to recycle pizza boxes? A. Put them in recycling stations. B. Fold them carefully and neatly. C. Tear the whole boxes into pieces. D. Clear the leftovers as much as possible. 39. What can we know about batteries from Paragraph 5? A. They can produce harmful materials. B. They will take a long time to be recycled. C. Battery recycling can bring economic benefits. D. Different batteries have different recycling stations. 40. What is the theme of the passage? A. Creative ideas. B. Daily necessities. C. Technical advances. D. Environmental protection. Spring lifts our spirits. It’s a time for Nature to bring us back to life after a cold season. I live not far from the Kairaku Park, which is one of the largest gardens in Japan, and famous for its near 10,000 plum trees. I am fortunate to have them all outside my backyard, and take advantage of the walking paths daily. I see the same trees and swans every day, but that day was different. At the edge of the small lake, I saw some new-born black swans. They were pretty and cute. They stayed with their mom. While taking a few photos of the sunset, I was interrupted by a high sound going on for some time. So I turned around and saw one little swan was stuck by two stones. Its mother was trying to make it out but failed. I tried to get near but the mother was ever so angry! She wouldn’t allow me to get close, so I turned to an old man sitting on the bench and said, “Excuse me, the swan baby can’t move and I want to help it, but the mother is extremely angry! Could you please do me a favor?” After hearing my words, the man smiled at me first and then agreed to help me. He drove the mother away with great efforts, and for several times, he was almost hurt by the mother. Thanks to him, I was able to get there and push the little swan out of the gap finally. Oh, I really hoped it wasn’t injured, but at least it was alive and swimming! In spring, I become more physically active. Things around don’t make us, but Nature does, and it keeps us going. I am positive that all of us have a little piece of nature in our own neighborhoods. Somewhere we will be reminded why natural life is so important because we grow with it! Personally, I am happy that baby birds can put a smile on my face! I struggle for having a small number of “things” in life, and being filled with simple reality — at one with Nature. 41. What can we know about the author from Paragraph 1? A. Her favorite season is spring. B. She enjoys doing outdoor sports. C. Her backyard is filled with plum trees. D. She is satisfied with her living environment. 42. Why was that day special for the author? A. She took a few photos of the sunset. B. She made a little swan’s mother angry. C. She met some swans and helped one of them. D. She met an old man and made friends with him. 43 What kind of person is probably the old man? A. Patient. B. Warm-hearted. C. Selfish. D. Outgoing. 44. What makes us more physically active according to the author? A. Nature. B. The neighborhood. C. The garden. D. The things around. 45. It can be inferred from the passage that the author ______. A. is really a nature lover B. is short of some life skills C. calls on people to help the weak D. transforms her plan into reality Harvard researchers have created a tough, low-cost, biodegradable material inspired by insects' hard outer shells. The material's inventors say it has a number of possible uses and someday could provide a more environmentally friendly alternative to plastic. The material, made from shrimp shells and proteins produced from silk, is called “shrilk”. It is thin, clear, flexible and strong. A major benefit of the material is its biodegradability. Plastic's toughness and flexibility represented a revolution in materials science during the 1950s and '60s. Decades later, however, plastic's very durability is raising questions about how appropriate it is for one-time products such as plastic bags, or short-lived consumer goods, used in the home for a few years and then cast into a landfill where they will degrade for centuries. What is the point of making something that lasts 1,000 years? Shrilk not only will degrade in a landfill, but its basic components are used as fertilizer, and so will enrich the soil. Shrilk has great potential, the inventors said. Materials from which it is made are plentiful in nature, found in everything ranging from shrimp shells, insect bodies to living plants. That makes shrilk low cost, and its mass production possible should it be used for products demanding a lot of material. Work on shrilk is continuing in the lab. The inventors said the material becomes flexible when wet, so they're exploring ways to use it in wet environments. They're also developing simpler production processes, which could be used for non-medical products, like for computer cases and other products inside the home. They're even exploring combining it with other materials, like carbon fibers, to give it new properties. 46 Paragraph 1 of the passage is mainly about shritk's_____. A. remarkable design B. interesting name C. major features D. basic elements 47. What has become a concern about plastic? A. Using it properly. B. Producing it cheaply. C. Developing its properties quickly. D. Evaluating its contributions fairly. 48. According to the inventors, shrilk has great potential partly because_____. A. it can help plastic degrade B. it can be found in living things C. its mass production has been realized D. its raw materials are abundant in mature 49. What are the inventors doing in the lab? A. Replacing carbon fibers with shrilk. B. Testing shrilk's use in wet conditions. C. Making shrilk out of used household goods. D. Improving shrilk's flexibility for medical purposes. 50. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage? A. Recent Progress in Environmental Protection B. Benefits of Insects in Scientific Research C. The Harm of One-time Products D. A Possible Alternative to Plastic There is an old Chinese proverb that states “One generation plants the trees; another gets the shade.” and this is how it should be with mothers and daughters. The relationship between a mother and a daughter is sometimes confusing. The relationship can be similar to friendship. However, the mother and daughter relationship has unique characteristics that distinguish it from a friendship. These characteristics include a hierarchy(等级)of responsibilities and unconditional love, which preclude mothers and daughters from being best friends. Marina, 27 years old, said, “I love spending time with my mom, but I wouldn’t consider her my best friend. Best friends don’t pay for your wedding. Best friends don’t remind you how they carried you in their body and gave you life! Best friends don’t tell you how wise they are because they have been living at least 20 years longer than you.” This doesn’t mean that the mother and daughter relationship can’t be very close and satisfying. This generation of mothers and adult daughters has a lot in common, which increases the likelihood of shared companionship. Mothers and daughter shave always shared the common experience of being homemakers, responsible for maintaining and passing on family values and traditions. Today contemporary mothers and daughters also share the experience of work and technology, which may bring them even closer together. Best friends may or may not continue to be best friends, but for better or worse, the mother and daughter relationship is permanent, even if for some unfortunate reason they aren’t speaking. Sometimes this is not an equal relationship. Daughters don’t always feel responsible for their mother’s emotional well-being. But mothers never stop being mothers, which includes frequently wanting to protect their daughters and often feeling responsible for their happiness. The mother and daughter relationship is a relationship that is not replaceable by any other. Mothers always “trump” friends. 51. What does the underlined word “preclude” in Paragraph 1 probably mean? A. Differ. B. Benefit. C. Prevent. D. Change. 52. What can we learn from what Marina said? A. Her mother is anything but her best friend. B. Best friends will not remind her of important issues in life. C. Her mother is wiser on account of her age. D. Best friends will not spend money on her wedding. 53. Why can a mother and a daughter build a closer relationship according to Paragraph 3? A. Because they share advanced technology with each other. B. Because they work together to support the whole family. C. Because they experience the same values and traditions. D. Because they have common experience in life and work. 54. What do we know from the text? A. A mother-daughter relationship can be replaced by friendship. B. A mother’s love brings her and her daughter a close friendship. C. It’s impossible for Marina to develop relationship with her mother. D. A mother-daughter relationship goes beyond best friendship. 55. What is the best title for the passage? A How to Be a Good Mother and Daughter B. Generation Gap between Mother and Daughter C. Can a Mother Be a Daughter’s Best Friend? D. Daughters Be Independent from Mothers 第II卷(非选择题共35分) 第四部分:写作(共两节,满分35分) 第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 阅读表达 Chen Zhou gives popular inspiring speeches around the world. He talks about his journey visiting over 700 of China’s cities and climbing over 100 mountains. It’s an impressive thing for anyone, but even more so when you know that Chen doesn’t have any legs. He gets around and climbs mountains with his hands in wooden boxes. After his parents’ divorce (离婚) when he was little, Chen was nurtured by his grandparents. They were very poor and from a young age, Chen would go out to find ways to make money. One day, while riding a train he realized he was going in the wrong direction and jumped off the train. Chen’s legs were cut off. One leg was far away, the other under his head. He was just 13. Chen started to sing in the street. It was here, he met the woman who would become his wife. Ability Magazine reported that she asked him “Do you need any help after you finish singing?” From then on the two began to see each other every day and fell in love. On the 10th anniversary of their wedding, they climbed China’s Five Sacred Mountains together. Zhou has proved to be a true inspiration for people. In 2016 he encouraged the then-11-year-old, Gao Zhiyu to also climb mountains. Like Chen, Gao also lost his legs in a terrible accident. Chen invited Gao to climb Laoshan Mountain with him after hearing his story. Gao lost his legs in a car accident and had been out of school for four years, doing his schoolwork in the hospital.
