Do I think the sky is falling? Sort of.
My husband and I were recently in Egypt, where the temperature was a bit warm for my tiny princess self. So, we left Egypt. Back home, my dearest friends struggled with health stuff, with family craziness...
The game of life is hard, and a lot of us are playing hurt.
I ache for the world but naturally I’m mostly watching the Me Movie, where balance and strength are beginning to fail. What can we do as the creaking elevator of age slowly arrive? The main solution is to get outside every day, ideally with friends. Old friends — even thoughts of them — are my comfort.
Recently I was walking along a beach with Neshama. We go back 50 years. She is 84, short and strong. Every so often, she bent down somewhat tentatively (踌躇地) and picked up small items into a small cloth bag.
“What are you doing?”
“I’m picking up micro litter. I try to help where I can.”
I reminded her of an old story. A great warhorse comes upon a tiny sparrow (麻雀) lying on its back with its feet in the air, eyes tightly shut with effort. The horse asks it what it’s doing.
“I’m trying to help hold back the darkness.”
The horse laughs loudly, “That is so funny. What do you weigh?”
And the sparrow replies, “One does what one can.”
This is what older age means. We do what we can.
We continued our walk. Neshama bent tentatively to pick up bits of litter and started to slip, but I caught her and we laughed. We are so physically vulnerable in older age, but friendship makes it all a rowing machine for the soul. We can take it, as long as we feel and give love, and laugh gently at ourselves as we fall apart. We know by a certain age the great lie in our life — if you do or achieve this or that, you will be happy and rich. No. Love and service make us rich.
4. What does the author say about her present life?
A. She leads a balanced life. B. She enjoys meeting old friends.
C. She is really into movies. D. She struggles with family crises.
5. Why did the author mention the sparrow?
A. To confirm Neshama’s fear. B. To offer her comfort.
C. To change Neshama’s mind. D. To show her approval.
6. What does the underlined “it” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Physical weakness. B. The great lie.
C. The rowing machine. D. The broken soul.
7. What largely determines happiness in older age according to the author?
A. Achieving important life goals. B. Enjoying life as you can.
C. Living a life of love and service. D. Loving what is being done.
C
Table tennis is one of those sports that most people would likely assume is simply unplayable by the blind. An Australian student however, is now using cameras and speakers to get unsighted individuals in on the ping pong action.
There are already two games for the blind (namely Swish and Showdown) which are similar to table tennis, but involve hitting a ball that makes a ring noise back and forth along the surface of a table. In that sense, they’re almost more like air hockey (曲棍球). Playing table tennis with a special ball that makes other sounds is another possibility, but such electronics-filled balls wouldn’t perform like the much lighter conventional balls.
It was with such limitations in mind that University of Sydney engineering honors student Phoebe Peng - working with ARIA Research Company - created her experimental new system.
The system includes a traditional table, bats and ball, along with a group of speakers along the sides of the table, and two neuromorphic (神经形态的) cameras. Also known as event cameras, the latter track the movement of objects within their field of view through local changes in brightness, which are detected by the image sensor.
With the joint output of both cameras, it's possible to track the position of the ball in three-dimensional space, in real time. A special program uses that data to control the speakers, causing them to produce a sound field matching the current position of the ball.
The idea is that both players simply listen for the position of the ball, as sent out by the speakers. That said, more research needs to be conducted before the system is made available for real- world use.
“An ongoing technical challenge is the matter of human perception (感知) of sound,” said Peng. “There are limitations on how accurately people can perceive sound localization. What type of sound should be used? This is a technical challenge well be solving in the next stage of development. ”
8. What is the purpose of the student-designed system?
A. To allow the blind to play table tennis. B. To provide multiple choices for people.
C. To get the sighted individuals active again. D. To popularize table tennis among the disabled.
9. What’s the major limiting factor of the special ball that makes sound?
A. The high price. B. The poor quality.
C. The technical issue. D. The weight problem.
10. How does the system track the position of the ball in the game?
A. By applying GPS technology. B. By using one camera’s image sensor.
C. By combining the data of two cameras. D. By detecting sound waves sent out by the ball.
11. What is the key problem facing people according to the last paragraph?
A. The inaccuracy of perceiving sound. B. The instability of the event cameras.
C. The difficulty of the mass production. D. The complexity of handling the program.
D
Which is better for Earth: an electric or gas-powered vehicle? The answer to this question might seem blindingly obvious: Of course electric cars must be better for the environment, because they don’t give off greenhouse gases as people drive. However, electric vehicles (EVs) aren’t perfect, and they come with their own set of polluting problems. Their batteries require a large amount of energy to produce.
Battery production is just one part of an electric car’s life span. A study looked at the entire life cycle of an EV’s emissions (排放), from mining the metals for the batteries to producing the electricity needed to power them, and then compared this with the average emissions of a gas-powered vehicle. The team found that when EVs are charged with coal-powered electricity, they’re actually worse for the environment than gas-powered cars.
“Only when connected to the dirtiest, coal-heavy electric grids (电网) do gas-powered cars become comparable to EVs on a greenhouse gas basis,” said Colin Sheppard, an expert in energy and transportation systems. That’s why more and more countries are decreasing the power supply from coal. In China, the national grid is improving with more investments in renewable energy. For example, it has twice as much wind energy capacity as the U.S. and it builds more solar panels per year than any other countries.
Sheppard modelled a future in which all cars were electric. “We wanted to understand what it might be like if all passenger vehicles are electrified.” For example, Sheppard calculated that if all vehicles in the U.S. were electric, it would reduce greenhouse-gas emissions by 46% every year. This reduction could be increased even further if those vehicles were using a technique known as “smart charging” in which cars are recharged at chosen times (often at night) to reduce the cost of electricity.
In short, it’s far easier to argue in favor of buying an EV than a gas-powered vehicle. But what about the cost? Aren’t electric vehicles too expensive for most people?
12. In which case do EVs get more heavy-polluted than gas-powered cars?
A. Being powered only by batteries. B. Consuming coal-powered electricity.
C. Starting to give off greenhouse gases. D. Replacing gas-powered vehicles entirely.
13. What is greatly promoted in China now according to the text?
A. Renewable energy. B. Electric vehicles. C. Coal-powered supply. D. Public transport.
14. How does Sheppard model the future of EVs?
A. With a discussion. B. With an examination. C. With a calculation. D. With a questionaire.
15. What might the paragraph following the passage be about?
A. Inventing green gas-powered vehicles. B. Developing environment-friendly grids.
C. Making electric vehicles more affordable. D. Getting rid of fossil energy like coal and oil.

It’s highly expected that students need to develop their critical thinking skills. In other words, students need to learn how to collect information, make judgments about the information and apply it to a new context. One way to develop students’ critical thinking is to be creative about the questions they ask.
___16___ For example, they help students be better language learners. Often, questions are the first point of contact. Even if the questions are not good enough, they are going to direct the level of your conversation. ___17___ And when you believe in yourself, you can have more interaction, which might lead to critical thinking.
The usual question-asking pattern starts with specific questions and then moves to abstract questions. ___18___ Firstly, create questions about information in the text you’re reading. Secondly, create questions about what the information in the text has to do with your own life. Finally, you create questions about abstract ideas—ideas that have come up in the questions about yourself. During the process, you’ve practiced creative ways to ask questions. ___19___
However, when you are told which questions to answer, you are less likely to be creative about the questions you ask. ___20___ Try making a list of questions that go from concrete to abstract, like the steps given above.
A. So, practice developing your own questions.
B. So, respond to the questions related to your own life.
C. Additionally, people who ask questions are very confident.
D. You can develop questions in three steps when you read a new text.
E. Question-asking activities are beneficial for students in many ways.

【答案】4. B 5. D 6. A 7. C

Table tennis is one of those sports that most people would likely assume is simply unplayable by the blind. An Australian student, however, is now using cameras and speakers to get unsighted individuals in on the ping pong action.
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. C 11. A

第五段叙述“With the joint output of both cameras, it's possible to track the position of the ball in three-dimensional space, in real time. A special program uses that data to control the speakers, causing them to produce a sound field matching the current position of the ball. (通过两个摄像头的联合输出,可以实时跟踪球在三维空间中的位置。一个特殊程序使用该数据来控制扬声器,使它们产生与球的当前位置相匹配的声场。)”可知,该系统通过结合两个摄像机的数据跟踪球在比赛中的位置。故选C。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。文章最后一段叙述““An ongoing technical challenge is the matter of human perception (感知) of sound,” said Peng. “There are limitations on how accurately people can perceive sound localization. What type of sound should be used? This is a technical challenge well be solving in the next stage of development. ” (“一个技术挑战是人类对声音的感知问题,”彭说。“人们感知声音定位的准确度有限。应该使用什么类型的声音? 这是我们在下一个发展阶段将要解决的一个技术挑战。”)”可知,人们面临的一个关键问题是感知声音的时候存在不准确性。故选A。

___16___ For example they help students be better language learners.
