It all started when I was just 18 years old. As a boy growing up, I probably read hundreds of books. I read mysteries, science fiction, thrillers, and just about any other type of book I could find. I had a thirst for knowledge that never seemed to disappear, no matter how many books I read over the years. Then suddenly, I found that I too had ideas of my own that I wanted to write and share. I wanted to share things that were full of goodness, love, joy, and happiness. I tried to ignore my desire at first, but as any writer will tell you, once ideas awaken inside of you, they don’t leave you alone until you write them down. I didn’t have a computer, or even a typewriter, but I grabbed a pen and a notebook and wrote down everything that was burning inside of me. When I was finally done, I didn’t know how to share my work with the world. There was no internet back then, no smartphones, and no social media. However, I sought out (找到) the editor of my local newspaper and asked if he would like to print what I’d written. He was a good man, full of both wisdom and kindness. He not only printed my first story but agreed to publish anything else I was willing to write. After that, of course, nothing could stop me. I continued to write new articles each week, which were published in different local papers and later on the internet. Years later, I even self-published two collections of my stories in book form. Through my writing, I slowly became a better person. Writing allowed me to discover the goodness and light that exist in us all. I also found that we are all writers, whether we put pen to paper or not. With every choice we make, with every thought we think, and with every action we take, we are writing our own life story. 41. Why did the author start writing? A. He wanted to try writing thrillers. B. He wanted to express his own ideas. C. He thought it would be easy after reading so much. D. He wanted to inspire others with his reading experience. 42. What can we know about the author’s writing career? A. It was lucky but short. B. It was busy and lonely. C. He like writing but he gave it up. D. He pushed forward with his writing. 43. After publishing his works, the author________. A felt writing had improved him B. encouraged others to put pen to paper C. often thought about the choices he made D. used social media to spread his influence 44. What can we know from the last paragraph? A. We will think twice before writing and action. B. We will make wise choice by writing articles. C. We will become a better person by writing. D. We are all the authors of our own lives. 45. Which of the following can best describe the author? A. Hardworking. B. Cooperative. C. Humorous. D. Outgoing. C America is a mobile society.Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change.Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while-then no more.If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending(延伸)sometimes deeply into both families. Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality(好客)easily. Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don't show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time.Sometimes,we,as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus.And they expect that we will phone them from there.Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real.We will find ourselves treated hospitably. For the Americans,it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes thanto go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at,home!. 46. The writer of this passage must be______. A. an American B. a Chinese C. a professor D. a student 47. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A. Friendships between Americans usually extend deeply into their families. B. Friendships between Americans usually last for all their lives. C. Americans always show their warmth even if they are very busy. D. Americans will continue their friendships again even after a long break. 48. From the last two paragraphs we can learn that when we arrive in America to visit an American friend, we will probably be_______. A. warmly welcomed at the airport B. offered a ride to his home C. treated hospitably at his home D. treated to dinner in a restaurant 49. The underlined words"generous with our time"in Paragraph 3 probably mean_____. A. strict with time B. serious with time C. careful with time D. willing to spend time 50. A suitable title for this passage would probably be"_____". A. Friendships between Chinese B. Friendships between Americans C. Americans' hospitality D. Americans' and Chinese's views of friendships D A recent research study suggests that learning music doesn’t make you smarter. For a while, there was an idea found on the Internet and in various magazines that suggested that babies could become smarter if they listened to Mozart, or to other classical music. Inspired, some parents bought classical CDs for their babies in the hope that this would boost their intelligence. But this so-called “Mozart Effect” has been challenged repeatedly. But is taking music lessons surely different from just listening to music? Wouldn’t taking music lessons make kids smarter? That’s exactly the question that many researchers over the years have tried to answer. Some of their studies concluded that it does, and some found that it doesn’t. For example, one study showed that music education did not improve reading skills, while another one found a small effect of music on young children’s ability to learn words. The researchers of the new study, Giovanni Sala (Fujita Health University) and Fernand Gober (London School of Economics), looked at the data behind 54 carefully selected studies, and after carefully comparing the data from different papers, they concluded that children who took music lessons did not score higher on tests that measure their intelligence or academic ability than kids that didn’t learn music. If music doesn’t make you smarter, how does that explain other research that shows that music lessons help students’ school performance? It seems like there is something about music lessons that makes students able to perform better in their other classes. That doesn’t have to be intelligence, and it’s likely not. Music lessons could have helped in different ways: They could have led to a change in homework habits, they could have increased confidence, or they could have improved social skills. And finally, they also mention that music education could still be beneficial to students’ performance in non-music subject if the music is combined with these classes. So feel free to keep making music, and keep encouraging children to learn music. 51. Which of the following words is closest to the underlined word “boost” in Paragraph 2? A. Reduce. B. Improve. C. Understand. D. Influence. 52. What can we learn about the “Mozart Effect”? A. It is most likely to be ineffective. B. It was first presented by Mozart. C. It helps parents take good care of their children. D. It will draw more and more researchers’ attention. 53. What does the example in Paragraph 3 show? A. Listening to music benefits kids a lot. B. Whether music education suits all kids remains unknown. C. Listening to music fail to help kids in language learning. D. Whether taking music lessons makes kids smarter is controversial (有争议的). 54. How did the researchers carry out the new study? A. They did 54 small studies in all. B. They observed children in music classes. C. They examined plenty of previous research. D. They did a long-term survey of musical students. 55. What conclusion is made in the last paragraph? A. Music lessons should be encouraged for children. B. Intelligence determines one’s school performance. C. A student’s intelligence can be increased with effort. D. Students should avoid listening to music while studying. 阅读下面短文, 并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。 Marga Allen might be around 93 years old. However, she wouldn’t put her feet up. The class is a mixture of Scottish dancing, line-dancing and routine. “I want to make it fun for them,” says Marga , “I’ve been teaching classes since 1965.” At that time, 8 ladies attended her class, but now there are as many as 18. As a Chinese student, I sincerely wish that I would have an opportunity to be a volunteer to introduce the excellent and traditional culture of China to British people. I’m diligent. That is, I can deal with what I meet in my daily life independently. I have a good knowledge of Chinese culture and have a gift for communicating with others. Apart from that, I am expert at oral English so that I can share my ideas with British people fluently. Finally, I’m always ready to help others in need. In a word, I wish to have a chance to talk more about China and make lots of contributions to Chinese teaching in Britain. Looking forward to your early reply.
