①In our fast-changing world, social customs are not staying the same. What people are supposed to do in different situations has been evolving (演变). This is especially clear in greetings, which are the first step in social communication.
②Traditionally, customs were quite strict. In many Western cultures like the United States, people used to be supposed to shake hands in formal meetings. For friends, a simple “hello” was often enough. In China, the rules were different. People, especially the younger ones, were supposed to show clear respect to the elders. They would often nod slightly or bow their heads a little. Physical touch was less common than in the West.
③However, things are changing quickly. Nowadays, the handshake is still common in the West for business, but among friends, hugs are often acceptable. In modern China, while respectful nods are still polite, handshakes have become very common in cities and workplaces. Young people usually use casual “Hi” or “Hello” in daily life.
④The most noticeable change among young people is the rise of the “fist bump (碰拳).” It is now seen as a cool, quick, and friendly greeting among teenagers worldwide. It is less formal than a handshake and helps people feel connected quickly. ______
⑤Why are these changes happening? People’s lives are busier and faster, so greetings have become quicker. The old strict rules sometimes feel too slow or formal for today’s lifestyle. The key point now is not just following one strict rule, but showing respect makes everyone feel comfortable.
⑥It is important to understand the changes in today’s modern, connected world. Therefore, let’s keep an open mind and never stop learning.
28. What were younger people in China traditionally supposed to do when greeting the elders?
A. Shake hands. B. Give a big hug. C. Nod or bow. D. Use a fist bump.
29. Which sentence can be put in the ________?
A. Another new custom is the “elbow bump,” which has become popular during global health problems.
B Some people still think the old ways of greeting are the best and show more respect to others.
C. Some health experts suggest we should all stop using handshakes in the future to prevent illness.
D. Bowing is still common in many Japanese offices, where it is seen as an important business manner.
30. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. The History of Handshakes
B. Changes in Greeting Customs
C. The Popularity of Greetings
D. Different Cultures, Different Greetings
31. What’s the best structure of this passage?
A. ①②/③④/⑤/⑥ B. ①/②③/④⑤/⑥ C. ①②③/④/⑤/⑥ D. ①/②/③④⑤/⑥

A medical study in China is giving new hope to people with spinal cord injuries (脊髓损伤). Scientists have created a brain-spinal chip (脑脊髓芯片) that allows paralyzed (瘫痪的) patients to move their legs, and even walk again.
The chip, only 1 mm wide, is designed to be fitted into the brain and spinal cord. If the natural communication between the brain and muscles (肌肉) is lost, this chip becomes the bridge. When the chips work, they create a direct connection between the brain and muscles.
The results have been amazing. A 34-year-old man, paralyzed after a fall, could move his legs just one day after the operation (手术) on January 8, 2025. Two weeks later, he walked five meters with help. Three other patients had similar operations in February and March, all getting better within weeks. Even though the patients’ nervous systems were damaged (受损), the chips helped them walk again. This marks a big step in China’s progress in medical science and it brings hope for over 3.7 million people in China.
“This is just the beginning,” the lead researcher says. “With the technology, these people may one day leave wheelchairs behind after 3 to 5 years of training.”
Behind this achievement is a long journey of careful research and bold thinking. It took the researchers over 10 years to develop the chip. They tested it on animals first, and then on people. They faced many challenges, yet they never gave up. Step by step, they developed a system to reconnect the mind and body in ways that once appeared only in science fiction.
As the chip continues to improve, it lights a new path forward—one built on science, shaped by care, and aimed toward a brighter future.
32. What do we know about the chips mentioned in the passage?
A. They develop an operating system.
B. They are fitted into the man’s arms.
C. They help the patients walk again.
D. They improve communication skills.
33. In Paragraph 3, how does the writer show the success of the brain-spinal chip?
A By listing numbers. B. By giving examples.
C. By asking questions. D. By comparing differences.
34. Which of the following meanings is correct for the underlined word “bold”?
bold /bəʊld/ adj.
①not afraid of taking risks and making difficult decisions:
Yugong made the bold decision to move the mountains.
②not shy especially in a way that shows no politeness:
I don’t like his bold manner.
③very strong or bright so that you notice them:
These clothes are bold, bright, and fun to wear.
④written or drawn in a very clear way:
The print should be bold and easy to read.
A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④
35. What is the writer’s purpose of writing this passage?
A. To show the long and hard process of developing the chips.
B. To advise all paralyzed patients to have the operation with the chip.
C. To compare the results of the medical tests on animals and humans.
D. To introduce a new medical chip that helps paralyzed people walk again.

Spring and autumn breaks are short holidays besides the traditional winter and summer vacations. Several regions (地区) in China have introduced spring and autumn breaks for primary and secondary schools. The policy (政策) encourages local governments to improve school schedules and help increase people’s consumption (消费) of services.
Some people strongly support adding spring and autumn breaks for school students. They think studying for months can feel like running a marathon (马拉松). These short breaks would make students less stressed. Also, these breaks allow for learning outside the classroom. Finally, spring and autumn usually bring good weather. Zhang Jiayan, a girl from a middle school in Zhoushan said, “I took a nice trip with my family during the autumn break. With good weather and fewer people, we really had a good time.”
While many agree that these breaks can help children be healthier and more active in learning, some express worries. A parent in Hangzhou said, “It is a good idea, but the big problem is that I cannot take time off work like my daughter.” A junior high school teacher in Chengdu pointed out that about one-third of the families in his class have to send their children to the school daycare. “If students are still in schools and have few chances to travel or join interesting activities, then what’s the point of having breaks?”

Life is full of changes. Sometimes that’s great but at other times it can make us feel unsure. There are positive changes like joining a club or making a new friend. However, other changes like moving schools or parents separating (分开) can bring some pretty strong feelings—and that’s OK.
Change is often difficult because it brings uncertainty. As child psychologist (心理学家) Emily Hanlon explains, our brains love routines which make us feel safe. Change feels like stepping into the unknown, especially if we feel unprepared or not in control.
But can change be good? Of course! If everything stayed the same, life would be boring. Change also helps you to grow and learn skills. Elliot, 14, from England, dealt with a big change when he moved to a new middle school. Elliot says “It was scary at first, but I made new friends. With teachers’ encouragement, I became more confident. It was worth it.” Hanlon agrees that change can lead to new experiences, friends, and “superpowers” like confidence.
Learning to accept change is important. Experts suggest that you can share your thoughts and feelings with someone you trust. It helps to put your worries into words. Or you can look for things that stay the same—maybe you still have your favourite game or book with you. This helps create a sense of comfort. Finally, focus on one day or one moment at a time. Celebrate little successes and positive things along the way, which will help you build confidence to move forward.
Life is full of changes. Some are positive, while ____50____. Change is often hard as it brings uncertainty and breaks routines. However, change can be good: it avoids ____51____ and helps grow and develop skills. Learning to accept change is important. Experts say sharing feelings with others, ____52____, and focusing on small successes can make it easier. By using these ways, we can ____53____.

How I Have Changed Since Middle School
Looking back on my middle school years, I realize how much I have changed.
First, my personality is different. I used to be a very quiet person who was often afraid of speaking up in class. I worried too much about making mistakes. But now, I understand that mistakes actually help me learn. I raise my hand more often and even joined the English drama club last term.
Another change is in my hobbies. I used to spend most of my free time playing mobile games. However, now I find real joy in playing basketball with friends outside. It makes me healthy and happy.
I am proud of these changes. Middle school has not only taught me knowledge but also helped me grow into a better and braver person.
