Last September, I drove to a wetland near my home in Oakland, California, just to watch birds. I had binoculars, a bird guide, and an app that could recognize bird songs. That day, I realized I had truly become a birder.
Some say anyone who looks at birds is a birder, but I think being a birder takes real effort, patience, and curiosity. Although I’ve written about animals for years as a science journalist, I only felt like a true birder when I decided to spend time focusing on birds — learning their names, their habits, and the rhythm of their migrations across continents.
Since then, my excitement has grown quickly and steadily. A few months ago, even common birds were new to me. Now I’ve seen more than 450 species, including over 300 this year. I can recognize many birds by their calls and even tell similar species apart after just a few notes. My background in science helped me learn faster, and modern birding apps made it easier. They not only help recognize birds but also show where they are found, connecting birders around the world through shared maps, photos, and observations.
Birding has greatly increased my time outdoors. I’ve discovered wildlife in different places— factories, sewage ponds, and small city parks tucked between buildings. It’s more calming than meditation (冥想). When I’m birding, I forget hunger, cold, and time. My mind becomes quiet, focused only on movement and song.
This hobby has deepened my connection with nature and the world around me. I notice the change of seasons through the birds that come and go. I’ve learned patience, stillness, and appreciation for small moments. I also realize that having time to bird is a gift. As a freelancer (自由职业者), I can choose my schedule. Birding reminds me that life isn’t just about work — it’s about curiosity, presence, and joy.
20. What helped the writer learn about birds quickly?
A. Her habit of reading nature books. B. Her interest in watching wildlife videos.
C. Her experience as a skilled photographer. D. Her background in science and birding apps.
21 How did birding change the writer’s life?
A She began teaching biology at school. B. She stopped working in media.
C. She spent more time outdoors. D. She started traveling abroad.
22. Which word best describes the writer’s feeling when birding?
A. Nervous. B. Surprised. C. Relaxed. D. Lonely.
23. What lesson did the writer learn from birding?
A. Creativity should be guided by exploration. B. Life should balance work with curiosity and joy.
C. Nature should stay untouched by human activity. D. Success should be measured by effort and growth.

When you think of batteries, you probably think of the kind that power flashlights, toys, and other equipment. Now, a Finnish company has designed and built the world’s largest sand battery in the small town of Pornainen, Finland.
The battery stores energy as heat in sand or sand-like materials. The heat can then be used to warm homes, provide hot steam, and help power factories. Why use sand? Pornainen experiences cold, dark, and snowy winters. Until recently, heating there relied on burning wood chips and oil, which release greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change. That’s why some are turning to renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power. However, their unstable nature makes energy storage important.
That’s where the sand battery comes in. Electricity heats the sand inside a container made of two layers of steel with a layer of insulation (隔热材料) placed in between to help keep the heat contained. pipes carry the heat inside the container, warming the sand up to an extremely high 842℉. When heat is needed, cool air is pushed through the same pipes, drawing out the stored heat. The system can then deliver hot air, water, or steam for residential or industrial use.
Currently, this battery can supply nearly a month’s worth of summer heating demand and about a week’s worth in winter for the town. On top of that, using this stored energy can help people in Pornainen remove the need for oil-based heating, potentially cutting related pollution from electricity production by 70 percent.
So far, the battery is working as intended. “It’s proving successful in Finland,” said Matteo Chiesa, a professor who studies solar energy at Khalifa University of Science and Technology. Representatives from Polar Night Energy say that their new sand battery can store heat energy for potentially months on end. Chiesa added that there’s strong potential for sand batteries to succeed elsewhere, too.
Sand batteries are not batteries in the conventional sense, as they do not directly produce electricity. Instead, they are thermal energy storage systems, meaning they are charged up using renewable energy, which is then stored as heat energy for use when energy demand exceeds (超过) supply.
“A battery that enables you to store summer solar energy and use it during winter—when heating demand is highest—is a powerful solution for seasonal energy needs,” Chiesa said.
24. Why does the author mention the weather conditions in Pornainen in Paragraph 2?
A. To describe the typical lifestyle in Finnish towns.
B. To highlight the need for renewable energy storage.
C. To compare it with other regions using solar power.
D. To explain why people there depend on wood and oil for heating.
25. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. How a sand battery works. B. What parts a sand battery has.
C. Why sand batteries are useful. D. When sand batteries were invented.
26. What can we learn about sand batteries from the passage?
A. They store energy in a chemical form like typical batteries.
B. They are designed to address seasonal temperature differences.
C. They are mainly used to supply hot steam for factories in winter.
D. They help reduce the use of oil-based heating and lower pollution.
D
The idea of a “bionic man” first appeared in science fiction. Over time, the idea has become closer to reality. In the 21st century, scientists developed a groundbreaking technology called the Brain-Computer Interface (BCI), which can read the brain’s electrical signals and connect them to a computer. This allows the brain and computer to communicate and understand each other. It offers hope for revolutionary clinical applications (临床应用), leading to medical advances that could help people with certain disabilities.
In 2021, new BCIs were developed that could translate thoughts into actions in new and exciting ways. These BCIs can read a person’s neuronal (神经元的) activity while they are thinking about a sentence and then display the sentence on a screen for the person to read. This type of BCI could enable disabled people to communicate their thoughts to others. More recently, the same scientists created a BCI through which the computer could speak based on a person’s thoughts. Another group added a creative twist by having the computer show an avatar of a woman talking.
The rapid advancement in the field of BCIs has also helped researchers understand how the brain integrates complex behaviors. Experiments have shown that action-perception loops (动作感知回路) can adapt by adjusting the connectivity in the brain’s neuronal networks. This finding led to new ideas about embodiment, in which the brain learns to adopt artificial devices as part of the body. One striking example came from a woman who uses a BCI to move her artificial arm. She said, “It was hard getting there, but now I simply think as if I am moving my own hand.”
BCIs provide major scientific and medical benefits, helping people recover lost brain functions. Although significant advancement has been made over the past 30 years, BCIs still need improvements in several areas. Technologies like artificial intelligence and deep learning are expected to enhance them. Another crucial breakthrough is the development of new methods for recording the activity of thousands of neurons without damaging brain tissue. Brain-computer technologies are already transforming lives by restoring lost abilities and offering new ways to communicate. As the technology improves, BCIs may also help unlock deeper secrets of how the brain works, opening the door to future breakthroughs in medicine, neuroscience, and human imagination.
27. According to the passage, what does a BCI mainly do?
A. It monitors and directs human emotions. B. It replaces damaged brain cells with devices.
C. It reads and changes stored human memories. D. It allows the brain and computers to communicate.
28. What does the underlined word “embodiment” in Paragraph 3 probably refer to?
A. The brain treating a machine as part of the body. B. The act of turning thoughts into simple words.
C. The strength of the artificial human body. D. The creation of complex artificial minds.
29. What is the author’s attitude toward BCIs?
A. Hopeful. B. Doubtful. C. Indifferent. D. Concerned.
30. Why does the author mention AI and deep learning in the last paragraph?
A. To present technologies that challenge BCIs.
B. To describe ways BCIs might replace scientists.
C. To introduce tools that may advance the performance of BCIs.
D To discuss concerns about the rapidly growing power of machines.

Have you gone out to dinner and told yourself you weren’t going to eat any of the free snacks, only to find yourself eating several handfuls of them? Or maybe you’ve bought an item you knew you didn’t need, or said something you later regretted.
If you’ve experienced these kinds of situations, then congratulations: You’re a human being. We all have times when we act impulsively (冲动地). Impulsive behavior refers to sudden, unplanned actions. People often take these actions without fully considering the potential consequences, risks, or benefits of their choices. Although impulsive behaviors are common, for some people, the behaviors can have negative consequences that disturb their lives. Maybe you’re often tired from staying up too late, or anxious about debt from repeated online shopping.
Impulsive behaviors are often driven by a desire for instant pleasure or attempts to “turn off” unpleasant emotions. I’ve worked with people whose impulsivity has led to a variety of consequences — from feelings of regret, helplessness, and shame to tense relationships and poor performance at work or school. But I’ve also witnessed meaningful change: people learning to pause before reacting, gaining confidence in their ability to manage urges, rebuilding trust with others, and beginning to feel more in control of their lives.
This process of change is often not easy. All human beings engage in at least some impulsive behavior. If you struggle with impulsivity now, pause before reacting, stay true to your values, and reduce the impact of impulsive behavior. Success doesn’t necessarily mean getting rid of every impulsive behavior — but it does mean gaining enough control so that impulsivity no longer disturbs your life.
53. What is impulsive behavior? (不多于3个单词)

54. What usually drives impulsive behaviors? (不多于12个单词)
_____________________________________________________________________________________

21. How did birding change the writer’s life?
A. She began teaching biology at school.

The heat can then be used to warm homes provide hot steam, and help power factories.
Electricity heats the sand inside a container made of two layers of steel, with a layer of insulation (隔热材料) placed in between to help keep the heat contained. pipes carry the heat inside the container, warming the sand up to an extremely high 842℉.

27. According to the passage what does a BCI mainly do?
D. To discuss concerns about the rapidly growing power of machines.

(不多于3个单词)
_____________________________________________________________________________________
54. What usually drives impulsive behaviors? (不多于12个单词)
_____________________________________________________________________________________
55. What does success mean according to the last paragraph? (不多于11个单词)

【答案】Dear Jim,
I’m glad to hear from you. Knowing that you are interested in how I use AI in my studies, I’m writing to share some details.
AI has become a helpful assistant to me. When I encounter difficult problems in math or science, I often use AI tools to explain the concepts step by step. I can use it to check my grammar, improve my writing style, and even practice speaking by having conversations with it.
However, while AI is powerful, I think we should use it wisely. My advice is that we should never rely on it to do our homework directly. Instead, we should treat it as a tutor to help us understand our mistakes.
Yours,
Li Hua
