Years ago when I was starting to explore the world in earnest-making
my first trips to Africa and Asia and the Arctic-I believed that looking at the
world through a camera held back my ability to see what was really in front of
me and to notice what mattered.I thought that trying to capture good pictures
took me out of the moment and made me conscious of constructing an image
rather than absorbing what I was experiencing.
I've since changed my mind about that.Today I take plenty of photos, not
just on my travels but in the everyday life-when I notice an interesting
mushroom while walking the dog,or watch the cloud formations before a storm.
I understand now that taking pictures can be a way to stop and make better
sense of the world around us.
That's one important outcome of the work that our phenomenal
photographers do for National Geographic. And it's why I'm so pleased that we
have devoted this month's magazine to immersing you in that work.
Of course, these professionals have a much different relationship with
photography than I do.Their work is creatively, intellectually, and logistically
challenging in ways that most of us hobbyist photographers can hardly imagine.
For them,it is an art and a science that they've perfected-a way to stop us in
our tracks and make us pay attention to a story that needs to be told.At their
best, photographers reveal what isn't readily seen.
In addition to impressive photos,we're letting you hear directly from a
handful of our photographers, who share stories that take you deeper into some
of their most interesting projects. You'll learn the extreme lengths to which our
contributors have gone to capture some of these shots, and get a closer look at
the equipment that makes it all possible.
I hope you enjoy the issue.
24.What was the author's initial belief about taking photographs?
A.It greatly enhanced his travel experiences.

A.Simplifying complex processes.
B.Imagining touching stories.
C.Documenting events accurately.
D.Presenting unnoticed scenes.
26.What does the magazine offer besides photos?
A.A behind-the-scenes look.
B.A contribution for photographers.
C.Photographer training projects.
D.Publishers'firsthand stories.
27.In which section of a magazine may this text appear?
A.Earth's A behind-the-scenes look.

In a clinical trial with 80 adults,a team of researchers found that sleep
extension reduced energy intake and resulted in a negative energy balance in
real-life settings among adults with overweight who habitually reduced their
sleep duration. The findings appear in the journal AMA Internal Medicine
Obesity is a major public health concern.Much evidence suggests that
sleeping less than 7 hours per night on a regular basis is associated with adverse
health results.Particularly, insufficient sleep duration has been increasingly
recognized as an important factor for obesity. However,it remains unknown
whether extending sleep duration can be an effective strategy for preventing
obesity.
The clinical trial involved 80 adults aged 21 to 40 years with a body mass
index(BMI)between 25.0 and 29.9,and habitual sleep duration of less than 6.5
hours per night. The study was conducted from November 1,2014 to October 30,
2020.The participants were able to increase their sleep duration by an average
of 1.2 hours per night after a personalized sleep counseling session.
Overall, participants who increased their sleep duration were able to reduce
their calorie intake by an average of 270 kcal per day-which would translate to
roughly 12 kg of weight loss over three years if the effects were maintained over
a long term.
Ultimately, the researchers hope to examine the underlying mechanisms
that may explain these results, and believe their work should encourage new,
larger studies on weight control to determine if extending sleep can support
weight-loss programs and help prevent or reverse obesity
"In our earlier work,we understood that sleep is important for appetite
regulation,"Dr.Tasali said."Now we've shown that in real life,without making
any other lifestyle changes, you can extend your sleep and eat fewer calories.
This could really help people trying to lose weight."
28.What's the new finding of the research?
A.Extending sleep duration helps reduce caloric intake.
B.Sleep extension can lead to weight problems.
C.Controlling energy intake is the key to losing weight.
D.Overweight adults often decrease their sleep duration.
29.What's the probable meaning of the underlined word "adverse"in paragraph
22
A.Apparent
B.Unique
C.Lasting
D.Harmful
30.According to the text, the subject of the study
A.usually slept 6.5 hours per night
B.got advice on sleep tailored to themselves
C.were 80 adults of the similar age group
D.were particularly chosen from a certain place
31.What do researchers think of the study?
A.Its results are hard to explain clearly.
B.It's unreliable with many factors ignored.
C.It lays a foundation for further studies.
D.It has solved all the puzzles of researchers.

When it comes to extreme weather, hailstorms(雹暴)“tend to get an
unbalanced share of the attention,"says Victor Gensini,a meteorologist(
者)at Northern IⅢlinois University.
Yet hailstorms total cars, destroy roofs, and devastate crops, costing the
United States $46 billion in 2023-representing 60%to 80%of the losses from
hail,tornadoes,wind,and lightning-caused fires combined,according to an
insurance institute. So it's no surprise U.S.hail scientists are frustrated that their
last major research campaign took place in the late 1970s."It's just this big
gaping hole,"says Becky Adams-Selin,a hail scientist at Atmospheric and
Environmental Research.
A project called the In-situ Collaborative Experiment for the Collection of
Hail in the Plains-ICECHIP,for short-is set up to change that.Led by
Adams-Selin,ICECHIP researchers hope to gather data that could improve
hailstorm prediction and help answer fundamental questions, such as how
climate change will affect the frequency of hailstorms and the size of the stones.
The campaign will rely on technologies new to hail research, such as
high-speed videography,drone imagery,and mobile radar.For example,
researchers will also use balloons to deliver 3D-printed spherical sensors into
storms to imitate the movement of hailstones.A fleet of 24 ground-based sensors
will measure the energy of falling hailstones every 500th of a second, and 3D
laser scanners will record collected hailstones'intricate shapes.Back in the lab,
ICECHIP researchers will analyze hailstones'ice layers to determine the
temperature and altitude at which they formed-and,in turn, the paths they
took through storms
"Such tools will bring hail research 'into the 21st century,""says Julian
Brimelow,a meteorologist and executive director of Canada's Northern Hail
Project,a research group involved in ICECHIP.But some technologies from the
1970s will remain, such as hail pads:Pieces of foam topped with aluminum foil
to catch hailstones and provide outlines of their sizes and shapes
32.What can we infer from Victor Gensini's statement?
A.Hailstorms are unexpected.
B.Hailstorms deserve more attention.
C.Hailstorms get too much attention.D.Hailstorms are common.
33.What does the underlined word "total"in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Need
B.Abandon
C.Damage
D.Blow
34.Why is ICECHIP founded?
A.To record the climate change effect.
B.To predict the frequency of hailstorms.
C.To provide the way of gathering data.
D.To address the gap in research on hailstorms.
35.What's the purpose of the passage?
A.To introduce ICECHIP.
B.To report weather changes.
C.To explain the formation of hail.
D.To show the damage caused by hailstorms.

Your comfort zone is that familiar, predictable space where tasks feel
effortless-a protective bubble shielding you from stress and
uncertainty.36.There are some ways to break out of your comfort zone
without going too far.
Do everyday things differently.Take a different route to work.37.
Whether the change you make is big or small, make a change in the way you do
things on a day-to-day basis.Look for the perspective that comes from any
change, even if it's negative.Don't be put off if things don't work out the way you
planned.
Take your time making decisions.Sometimes slowing down is all it takes to
make you uncomfortable-especially if speed and quick thinking are prized in
your work or personal life.38.And take your time to interpret what you
see.Sometimes just defending your right to make an educated decision can push
you out of your comfort zone.
