On October 18, 2025, the world lost a great physicist when Yang Zhenning passed away in Beijing at the age of 103. Tsinghua University, where he had worked for many years, issued an obituary calling him “one of the greatest physicists of the 20th century” and emphasizing his outstanding contributions to modern physics.
Yang Zhenning’s academic career was filled with groundbreaking achievements. In 1954, he and his collaborator Robert Mills put forward the Yang-Mills Gauge Field Theory. This theory is so important that it is compared with Einstein’s general theory of relativity and Maxwell’s equations, and it laid the foundation for the later Standard Model of particle physics. Another famous contribution was his work on parity non-conservation in weak interactions, which he developed with Li Zhengdao. This revolutionary idea changed people’s understanding of symmetry in physics and earned them the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1957.
Beyond his scientific work, Yang Zhenning had a deep affection for his motherland. As early as 1971, when Sino-US relations were beginning to improve, he returned to China for a visit. This trip had a huge impact and encouraged many Chinese scholars living abroad to come back and serve the country. In 1999, he officially became a professor at Tsinghua University and later served as the honorary director of the university’s Institute for Advanced Study. Even in his 80s, he still taught undergraduate courses and worked hard to cultivate young physics talents.
In 2021, Yang Zhenning donated more than 2,000 pieces of his collection, including books, manuscripts and images, to Tsinghua University, which set up a special “Yang Zhenning Resource Room” to preserve these precious materials.
8. Why did Yang Zhenning and Li Zhengdao win the Nobel Prize in Physics?

B. He put forward the Yang-Baxter Equation.
C. He taught at Tsinghua University and cultivated talents.
D. He won the Nobel Prize in Physics.
11. When did Yang Zhenning donate his collection to Tsinghua University?

When it comes to popular symbols of marriage, one cannot look past the wedding ring. The wedding ring serves as a perfect symbol of everlasting love — a ring is a circle and thus has no beginning or end, representing the never-ending union of marriage.
Evidence suggests that wedding rings were used in ancient Egypt around 6,000 years ago. However, unlike the metals and jewels used today, they were crafted from materials such as leather or bone. In the centuries that followed, the wedding ring tradition was picked up in the West, where it spread first in ancient Rome and Greece, subsequently throughout Europe during the Middle Ages, and eventually to Eastern culture.
Throughout history, the round shape of the ring has continued, and so has the tradition of wearing it on the fourth finger of the left hand. The latter practice originated from an ancient belief that a vein (静脉) ran directly from this finger to the heart. Although this belief has since been considered wrong, the custom has continued.
Regarding customs surrounding wedding rings, there was a time when only the bride wore a wedding ring. It wasn’t until the early 20th century that the practice of bridegrooms wearing rings gained popularity. This change was influenced by soldiers going off to war, who wore rings as reminders of their loved ones waiting for them at home. Today, the exchange of wedding rings remains an essential part of the wedding ceremony, symbolizing the commitment and love shared between two individuals who will begin a life together.
Wedding rings hold a symbolic significance that ties the two members of a married couple. In an ever-changing world, the wedding ring stands as an ancient tradition that is likely to continue for generations to come, reflecting the timeless and everlasting love celebrated through marriage.
12. What can we know about wedding rings in the text?
A. They have their roots in Europe. B. They date back to the Middle Ages.
C. They symbolize the owners’ social status. D. The round shape has remained unchanged.
13. Why did people in ancient times wear a wedding ring on the fourth finger of the left hand?
A. Because it brought good luck to soldiers going off to war.
B. Because they wished to keep their lover in their heart.
C. Because a vein runs directly from this finger to the heart.
D. Because it represented the never-ending union of marriage.
14. What can be predicted about the future of the wedding ring tradition?
A. It will undergo great changes. B. It will gradually fall out of date.
C. It will probably last for quite a long time. D. It will only be popular in certain cultures.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. The design of wedding rings. B. The significance of wedding rings.
C. The long history of wedding rings. D. The materials used for wedding rings.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. C 15. B

Should mobile phones be allowed at school?
As we know, with the development of society, cell phones are playing an important part in our daily life nowadays. Many students are having cell phones. In my opinion, they have both advantages and disadvantages.
First, cell phones make it convenient for people to keep in touch with each other wherever they are. Second, we can gain more information about the world through the phone to broaden our horizons. But the disadvantages are much more obvious than advantages of using cell phones. For example, while we are having classes, the cell phone rings. No doubt it will disturb all of us, which will have a negative effect on our study. Second, it is clear that using cell phones too long will do harm to our health and eyes.
As far as I am concerned, middle school students have a weak self-control, mobile phone does more harm than good, so it shouldn’t be allowed at school.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Phil was a successful businessman. One day, he went for a lunch at a new restaurant. While waiting or his meal, Phil looked at the people in the park. Suddenly, a young boy’s face caught his attention.
“Wait, do I know him?” he wondered. He walked out of the restaurant. When he approached the little boy, he saw the boy begging for money. When Phil saw the boy turn towards him, “Yes, I know him!” Phil thought. Phil knew the boy and his mother very well.
Phil was in his senior year when Melissa, the boy’s mother, joined the university as a teaching assistant. She met Phil when his teachers wanted to make him leave the university because of his poor performance. Melissa stood up for him and asked his teachers to give him one last chance.
Phil agreed to study under Melissa’s guidance and was amazed to see how she taught him the knowledge he couldn’t follow earlier. He considered her as his mentor (导师) and respected her a lot.
After graduating, Phil set up his company and applied the knowledge that Melissa had taught him. He quickly made huge profits and was always grateful to Melissa.
“Hey! What happened to your mom?” Phil asked the boy
“She hasn’t been feeling well for the past year,” the boy replied while he tried to recognize Phil. “The doctors says she needs immediate surgery (外科手术), but we can’t afford it.”
“I’m so sorry to hear that,” Phil said.
“We sold everything we owned,” the boy said. “We paid for her first operation, but now we have nothing. She needs another surgery as soon as possible.”

【答案】One possible version:
The boy agreed and jumped into Phil’s car. Phil tried his best not to cry on the way to the hospital, but he couldn’t help it. He was shocked to learn about Melissa’s illness. After parking the car, Phil followed the boy to the hospital room and talked to the doctors about the woman’s condition. “Ms. Melissa needs immediate surgery,” the doctor said. “We will begin the surgery as soon as we are ready.” Phil nodded and told the doctors he would pay for the surgery.
Phil sat in the waiting room beside the boy while the doctors performed Melissa’s surgery. Hours later, a team of doctors and nurses came out of the operation room and told Phil everything was fine. When Melissa gained awareness, her son hugged her, “Mom, do you know who paid for your surgery?” Melissa turned her eyes to Phil. “Phil? Is that you?” she smiled.“Yes, Ms. Melissa,” Phil smiled back. “Your favorite student is here!” With hands holding together, they talked about their past good days happily.

A. For developing the Yang-Mills Gauge Field Theory.
B. For proposing the idea of parity non-conservation.
C. For establishing the Standard Model of particle physics.
D. For donating precious materials to Tsinghua University.
9. What is the significance of the Yang-Mills Gauge Field Theory?
A. It won Yang Zhenning the Nobel Prize alone.
B. It laid the foundation for the Standard Model of particle physics.
C. It changed people’s understanding of gravity.
D. It was developed when Yang Zhenning worked at Tsinghua University.
10. What did Yang Zhenning do after 1999?
A. He first returned to China for a visit.
B. He put forward the Yang-Baxter Equation.
C. He taught at Tsinghua University and cultivated talents.
D. He won the Nobel Prize in Physics.
11. When did Yang Zhenning donate his collection to Tsinghua University?
A. In 1957. B. In 1999.
C. In 2021. D. In 2025.

“Hey! What happened to your mom?” Phil asked the boy.
“I can’t believe this,” Phil said while holding back his tears. “Can you take me to the hospital? I want to meet your mother.”
