His parents had a small shop but it was not successful and closed when he was thirteen. He worked at different times in a clothes shop and a chemist’s. He always read a lot and later managed to get a place at a science college. After he left there he became a teacher, but he was badly hurt while playing football and this meant that he could not continue. He then worked in London, writing for newspapers and doing some teaching of small groups. None of this made him much money. The Time Machine was his first fictional work. It appeared in weekly parts in a magazine in 1894 and as a book the following year. At the time, Wells was married to his second wife and was trying to support both her and her mother. He needed to make money, so he wrote it quite quickly. Although he was never really happy with the finished book, it was a great success and allowed him to continue as a writer. It is not easy for us to understand how different this book was from others of the time. It is the first real science fiction book. It introduces the readers to the idea of time as the fourth dimension, with the three dimensions of space ten years before Einstein made it part of scientific thinking. Wells also describes a simple mechanical answer to the problem of time travel — a time machine. Nobody had ever described time travel in a machine before, and the words “time machine” entered the English language. After the great success of this book, Wells wrote more science fiction. His most famous books are The Island of Dr Moreau (1896), The Invisible Man (1897), The War of the Worlds (1898) and The First Men in the Moon (1901). All of them have been filmed, some more than once. H.G.Wells died in London in 1946. 4. Why did Wells begin to write for newspapers in London? A. He wanted to make more money. B. His second wife asked him to do so. C. He was seriously injured in sport. D. He was never happy with his former job. 5. What do we know about The Time Machine? A. It was Wells’ most famous work. B. It first appeared as a book. C. Wells was very satisfied with it. D. Its success helped to support Wells’ family. 6. How was The Time Machine different from other books of the time? A. It was the first fiction book in the world. B. It first described time travel in a machine. C. Readers felt it easier to read and understand. D. It introduced the idea of four-dimensional space. 7. What is the purpose of the passage? A. To describe the plot of The Time Machine. B. To convince readers that Wells was a good writer. C. To illustrate the great and famous works of Wells. D. To introduce Wells’ life experiences and his works. C For centuries, people thought that fish did not feel pain or emotions. Now research has shown that fish not only have feelings but can also sense one another’s moods. When a human understands and shares the feelings of another person, this is called empathy. Scientists have found that a chemical in the brain called oxytocin is involved in our ability toconnect with others in this way. A basic form of empathy, known as emotional contagion, happens when an individual sees someone else displaying an emotion (such as happiness or fear) and reacts by displaying the same type of behavior. An international team of researchers tested zebrafish with a series of experiments. First, they placed the fish in two separate tanks and gave one group a substance that caused them to act fearful — either freezing or swimming irregularly. Even though the fish in the nearby tank had not touched the substance, they also began to freeze in fear. “They respond to other individuals being frightened... just like us.” Ibukun Akinrinade, a co-author of the study, told the Associated Press. The scientists tried the experiment with fish that had been modified (调整; 修改)so their brains would not produce oxytocin. These fish were much less likely to act anxious when they saw other fish showing fear. If researchers gave them an injection of oxytocin, their ability to empathize returned. Finally, researchers played videos of fearful fish on one side of the tank and relaxed fish on the other side. Normal fish moved closer to the side that showed the fearful fish, which might have been an attempt to comfort them. The modified fish did not move toward either side. Looking at the normal fish’s brains, researchers saw activity in a region similar to the one humans and other mammals use when empathizing with others. This could mean that the ability to have empathy developed more than 350 million years ago, when fish and mammals shared a common ancestor. Next, researchers want to study whether fish also transfer positive emotions to one another. 8. The phrase “emotional contagion” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to ________. A. the ability to control one’s own emotions when others are emotional B. the tendency to hide one’s true feelings to avoid affecting others C. the process of sharing and reflecting others’ emotions unconsciously D. the capacity to understand the root cause of others’ emotions 9. What is Ibukun Akinrinade’s view on fish empathy? A. The emotional response of fish is comparable to that of humans. B. Fish empathy is limited to negative emotions like fear. C. Zebrafish are the only fish species capable of empathy. D. Fish empathy is stronger than that of humans and mammals. 10. What did the researchers find about the modified zebrafish? A. They could still sense fear in other fish without oxytocin. B. They showed increased anxiety when injected with oxytocin. C. They moved closer to fearful fish to comfort them intentionally. D. They failed to respond to videos of either fearful or relaxed fish. 11. What can be the best title of the text? A. From Fear to Comfort: The Social Lives of Fish B. The Ancient Roots of Empathy: Evidence from Fish C. More Than Feelings: How Fish Share Emotions D. A New Discovery: The Emotional World of Zebrafish D Imagine an artificial intelligence model that can watch and understand moving images like you and me. Now, scientists have made this a reality by creating MovieNet: an innovative AI that processes videos much like how our brains interpret real-life scenes. This brain-inspired AI model can perceive dynamic scenes by simulating how neurons (神经元) make real-time sense of the world. While conventional AI excels at still image recognition, MovieNet is designed to understand complex, dynamic scenes, allowing it to recognize tiny changes over time. To create MovieNet, Hollis Cline, senior author of the study, examined how animals’ brains process real-world scenes. Specifically, he studied how tadpoles’(蝌蚪的) neurons respond to moving stimuli. Tadpoles’ neurons process these visual inputs like solving puzzle pieces: each piece alone may not make sense, but together they form a complete image in motion. Different neurons process various “puzzle pieces” of a real-life moving image, which the brain then combines to form a continuous scene. Using this understanding, the researchers trained MovieNet to process video clips by identifying small visual signals, allowing it to distinguish between small changes in scenes. In testing, MovieNet achieved 82.3% accuracy, outperforming trained human observers by 18% and doing much better than existing AI models. Beyond its higher accuracy, MovieNet is more environment-friendly. Conventional AI requires vast amounts of data and energy, but MovieNet compresses(压缩) data like a zipped file, reducing environmental impact. “We’ve also made AI far less demanding,” says Cline. MovieNet could also transform medicine. It might help detect early signs of diseases by tracking small movement changes that are difficult for human eyes to detect. Looking ahead, the team plans to improve MovieNet’s ability to adapt to different environments and enhance its potential applications. “By designing models that think like living organisms(有机体), we can achieve efficiency levels that aren’t possible with traditional AI,” says Cline, “Biology is a gold mine.” 12. What does the underlined word “simulating” mean in Paragraph 2? A. Copying B. Inspiring C. Demonstrating D. Recognizing 13. MovieNet is trained ________. A. to increase visual inputs B. to feed on information pieces C. to combine dynamic images D. to look into tadpoles’ neurons 14. According to paragraph 5, what is an advantage of MovieNet? A. Its powerful data storage. B. Its control of medical diseases. C. Its low energy consumption. D. Its improvement on drug effects. 15. What can be concluded from Cline’s words in the last paragraph? A. Biology brings us financial profits. B. Drawing inspiration from biology is promising. C. Living organisms can outperform AI. D. AI can assist in biological development. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) How to become a morning person Everyone knows that early to bed and early to rise is good for your health. Our lunchtime when I was in the third grade will stay with me always. I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had painstakingly practiced my lines(台词)with me. But no matter how easily I delivered them at home, as soon as I stepped on stage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained patiently that she needed a narrator (叙述者,旁白员) and had written a narrator’s part to the play, and asked me to play the role of the narrator. Her words, kindly delivered, still hurt me especially when I saw my part go to another girl. I didn’t tell mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed my upset, and instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard. It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine( 藤 )was turning green. Under the huge trees, we could see yellow dandelions( 蒲 公 英 ) appearing unexpectedly through the grass in bunches (簇,串), as if a painter had touched our landscape with small amounts of gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one of the bushes. “I think I’m going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling a blossom up by all its roots. “From now on, we’ll only have roses in this garden.” I immediately argued, “But I like dandelions. All flowers are beautiful — even dandelions.” 注意: 1. 续写词数应为 150 左右: 2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已经为你写好。 Paragraph 1: “Do you mean that every flower has its own beauty?”asked my mother thoughtfully. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Having learned what had happened, Mom patted me on the back gently and said,“But you will be a beautiful narrator.” ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 高二年级英语学科期末模拟定时检测 考试时间为120分钟,满分150分 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。每段对话后有一个小题,从题中所给的A、B、C三个选项中选出最佳选项。听完每段对话后,你都有10秒钟的时间来回答有关小题和阅读下一小题。每段对话读两遍。 1. People with self-control can set clear goals, develop good habits and be responsible for their own life. Self-control is not natural, but can be built up through efforts. There are two things we can do to strengthen our self-control. One is to cultivate a sense of social responsibility, preventing us from doing something against social morality. The other is to know what we really want to get, which can help us resist some distraction and temptation. In brief, it is necessary that we make constant efforts to obtain this ability. 第二节(满分25分) 【47题答案】 【答案】One possible version: “Do you mean that every flower has its own beauty?” asked my mother thoughtfully. I nodded without hesitation, as if a second waste could threaten the life of dandelions. “And that is true of people too," she added with her soft voice. “Not everyone can be a rose, and it is also an honor to be a dandelion.” Relieved that my mother had guessed my pain, I took off the mask that I had worn for the whole lunch time and poured out my upset heartily. Having learned what had happened, Mom patted me on the back gently and said, “But you will be a beautiful narrator.” She reminded me of how fluently I could deliver my part at home. It was at that time that I understood that maybe I was more suitable for a role backstage like a narrator.
