Bring the beauty of native birds into your home
with unique artwork by Pam McGrath
Australia and its offshore islands and territories have 898 recorded bird species as of 2014. Of the recorded birds, 165 are considered accidental visitors, of the remainder over 45% are classified as Australian endemics: found nowhere else on earth. It has been suggested that up to 10% of Australian bird species may go extinct by the year 2100 as a result of climate change.
Artist Pam McGrath expresses her lifetime concern for wildlife conservation through these paintings of Australian birds. While celebrating their beauty and diversity, the birds are presented in abstract design with straight lines, rather than the delicate natural form, to suggest the challenges of their adaption to environmental change.

If there’s one sound which represents everything there is to fall in love with on safari (观兽旅行), it’s the roar of a lion at nightfall. I heard it one evening in the Qwabi Private Game Reserve, where the Waterberg mountains spread outward like an unfolding story.
We’d just watched a remarkable standoff: lionesses baring teeth and muscle to a dominant male who’d wandered too close. The roars came first, then a sudden, striking charge. Paws (爪子) flew and their breath hung in the air over the grasslands, before the male eventually turned and dropped to the ground in defeat. It was pure theatre, to which we had front-row seats.
The Waterberg is a place of quiet success. A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2001, this 654,000-hectare region in Limpopo Province is one of South Africa’s best-kept safari secrets. It’s a region where conservation feels like a lived value. Thanks to collaboration between private reserves, landowners and anti-illegal hunting units, the region has recorded some of the lowest rhino (犀牛) illegal hunting statistics in the country.
Head guide Damien Fourie was extensive in his knowledge and boyishly excited about every sight and sound. After careful tracking, we came across a group of lions resting beneath a thorn tree, their bodies exposed only by the swinging of a tail. And when we spotted a two-week-old white rhino walking unsteadily beside its mother later on the drive, he was as thrilled as we were.
Still, even if you see nothing but sky and silence, the Waterberg delivers. On our final morning, after a night of rain, I skipped the game drive in favor of a coffee on the deck. I watched the steam rise as the morning sun warmed the valley. The end of my time in the bush came with no distant lion roars, no whispering packs, no newborn rhino. Not every safari needs a drumroll ending. Sometimes, a slow, misty morning and a quiet deck tick all the boxes.
4. What did the author witness about the lions?
A. Their playful race. B. Their staged show.
C. Their fierce conflict. D. Their hunting attempt.
5. What do the underlined words “a lived value” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. A theoretical principle. B. A widely spread belief.
C. A practically applied norm. D. A traditionally held concept.
6. Which of the following best describes Damien?
A. Calm and distant. B. Informed and passionate.
C. Energetic and creative. D. Disciplined and ambitious.
7. What does the author think of the safari?
A. It displayed racial harmony. B. It had an exciting ending.
C. It revealed why she loved nature. D. It satisfied what she could hope for.

Cities are not just visual landscapes — they are acoustic (声音的) environments. Yet for decades, urban planning has treated sound primarily as a disturbance to be blocked. Today, this mindset is shifting.
Long-term exposure to high noise increases stress, sleep disorders, and heart disease. Yet urban sounds are not necessarily negative. Researchers like Barry Truax and Murray Schafer pioneered the concept of the soundscape: listening to the total acoustic environment instead of measuring single sources of noise. Recent studies show that diverse sound environments — for example, combining birdsong, water features, or urban plants — can reduce stress levels compared to mono low-frequency noise.
How to shape a city that makes good sounds? Urban layout (布局) matters. Wide roads can bring down noise but may increase traffic speed, generating more sound. Good urban sound design may help avoid this. In Miami Beach, SoundScape Park combines landscape architecture with a special sound system to improve performance effect, showing how public space can use sound positively.
However, despite growing awareness, few city plans include sound as a core design factor. Cities like Paris and Zurich are beginning to change this by using noise maps in their city plans and requiring acoustic impact assessments for major construction. Integrating sound-sensitive criteria into planning policy ensures that sound comfort is considered with air quality, light, and mobility.
New technologies are also helping us shape a better soundscape. Acoustic sensors and AI-powered noise mapping tools can track real-time sound conditions and mobile apps enable citizens to report pleasant or disturbing soundscapes, encouraging shared sound management.
Urban sound design must go beyond noise control. City planners, architects, and local communities should co-create spaces that sound as good as they look. Good urban soundscapes remind us that cities are not silent — they are meant to be heard.
8. What was the problem with past city planning?
A. Undervaluing the role of sound. B. Focusing on diverse environments.
C. Ignoring the management of noise. D. Designing poor urban soundscapes.
9. What can we learn about urban soundscapes from paragraph 2?
A. All urban sounds are harmful to people’s physical health.
B. Multiple acoustic environments benefit people’s mental health.
C. The concept of soundscape focuses on measuring single noise sources.
D. Long-term exposure to any noise will cause heart disease and sleep problems.
10. Which of the following contributes to a better soundscape?
A. Having urban roads expanded.
B. Inspiring joint sound-shaping efforts.
C. Maximizing control of individual noise.
D. Improving urban air quality and mobility.
11. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. Urban sound design comes first.
B. Noise control is no longer necessary.
C. Cities’ soundscape improves its appearance.
D. Soundscape design should be taken seriously.

You’ve probably encountered images in your social media feeds that look like a cross between photographs and computer-generated graphics. Some are imaginative and some are believable at a quick look — remember the little girl carrying a little dog in a boat during a flood? These are examples of AI slop (垃圾), low-to mid-quality content — video, images, audio, text or a mix — created with AI tools, often with little regard for accuracy. It’s fast, easy and inexpensive to make this content. AI slop producers typically place it on social media to employ the economics of attention on the Internet, displacing higher-quality material that could be more helpful.
AI slop has been increasing over the past few years. As the term “slop” indicates, that’s generally not good for people using the Internet. The Guardian published an analysis in July 2025 examining how AI slop is taking over YouTube’s fastest-growing channels. The journalists found that nine out of the top 100 fastest-growing channels feature AI-generated content. In many cases, people post AI slop that’s just good enough to attract and keep users’ attention, allowing them to profit from platforms that monetize (变现) streaming and view-based content.
The ease of generating content with AI enables people to post low-quality articles to publications. Clarkesworld, an online science fiction magazine that accepts user posts and pays contributors, stopped taking new posts in 2024 because of the flood of AI-generated writing it was getting.
AI slop also harms artists by causing job and financial losses and crowding out content made by real creators. The placement of this lower-quality AI-generated content is often not distinguished by the algorithms (算法) that drive social media consumption, and it displaces entire classes of creators who previously made their livelihood from online content.
Wherever it’s enabled, you can flag content that’s harmful or problematic. On some platforms, you can add community notes to the content to provide context. For harmful content, you can try to report it. Along with forcing us to be on guard for “inauthentic” social media accounts, AI is now leading to piles of rubbish degrading our media environment.
12. Why do producers create AI slop according to Paragraph 1?
A. To replace professional materials.
B. To improve artistic expression globally.
C. To use Internet attention economies for profit.
D. To educate Internet users about new technologies.
13. What can we infer from Clarkesworld’s action in 2024?
A. Science fiction became less popular.
B. Poor AI content flooded their system.
C Their subscriber base doubled unexpectedly.
D. They began paying higher fees for human writers.
14 What should individuals do regarding the rise of AI slop?
A. Stop using AI-generated content.
B. Avoid engaging with social media platforms.
C. Rely on algorithms to screen out low-quality content.
D. Take action by marking harmful AI-generated content.
15 Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. AI Slop: A New Form of Art
B. The Positive Effects of AI on Media
C. The Role of Social Media in Promoting AI Slop
D. AI Slop: The Growing Threat to Online Content

I love thinking about teams. I love thinking about how to create an environment that will make a group of people want to be on the team. I love considering the best ways to build a great team.
Here is one of my favorite team concepts: the sign of a great team is not the absence of conflict. Rather, the sign of a great team is the ability to resolve conflict. ____16____ But our ability to consistently resolve that conflict impacts the kind of team we have more than any other variable. If we learn how to resolve the conflict, the team will be together for very long.
Now, the “how” is the hardest part of conflict resolution. ____17____ But in my experience, the key aspect of consistent conflict resolution comes down to listening and respect. When we listen to each other and respect the opposing perspective (视角), we can have reasonable dialogue. ____18____
That we listen to and respect other perspectives does not mean we always have to agree. ____19____ That's fine. But simple listening skills and demonstrations of respect are at the heart of consistent and reasonable conflict resolution.
Great teams are not on the same page all the time. ____20____ So when you are trying to build a great team or when you think you have one and want to keep it great, spend some time thinking about how you will handle those difficult moments when the team is not on the same page.
A We can still agree to disagree.
B. But great teams know how to get there.
C. The best relationships take time and effort.
D. It is always complex and often requires multiple steps.
E. Then we are likely to be on our way to eventual resolution.
F. People on a team often work together towards a common goal.
G. That is because even the best teams unavoidable have conflict.

In the final stage of the cycling race, with only 300 meters left, I was riding just behind my teammate Samuel.
We had trained together since freshman year at Seaside High. Every morning, we rode along the coast, breathing in salty air and pushing each other to go faster. We took turns leading the way, pushing each other to keep the pace, especially on long uphill roads. When one of us felt tired, the other would stay close and keep going. Over the years, Samuel and I had always treated every ride seriously.
Suddenly, Samuel’s tire blew out with a loud sound. Without stopping or looking back for help, he lifted his bike onto his shoulder and began to run toward the finish line, determined to complete the race properly. His steps were heavy, but he kept moving forward. From behind, I could clearly see how hard he was trying.
As I rode, many memories came back to me: a rainy day when we pushed our bikes through deep mud and refused to give up; a quiet night sitting on the river bank when we shared one orange and talked about racing abroad one day; and the chocolate bar he had secretly put into my pocket this morning, with “For luck” written on it.
I knew that with just a little more effort, I could pass Samuel and move ahead — to the podium spot (领奖台) we’d both been chasing. The thought was simple and clear, and my body was ready to act. But at the same time, my heart hesitated. Years of training, shared struggles, and long friendship suddenly weighed on my mind. Right then and there, almost like waking up from a dream, I reminded myself why I was here. With that in mind, I steadied my breathing as the finish line drew closer.

Dear Peter,
I’m really glad that you’re curious about the debate we held recently, the topic of which is “Is space exploration worthwhile?”
Some of my classmates held the opinion that it’s not worthwhile. They said the large amount of money spent on it could be better used to deal with urgent global issues, such as hunger and environmental pollution. However, the others thought it was valuable, for it can drive the development of new technologies and help humans learn more about the unknown universe.
As for me, I believe space exploration is a worthy attempt. It may bring unexpected benefits to our life in the long run.
Yours,
Li Hua
范文(2)
Dear Peter,
I’m thrilled that you’re interested in the heated debate we had, themed “Is space exploration worthwhile?”
Opponents argued the astronomical funds for space programs should be directed to tackle urgent Earth issues: relieving poverty, reversing environmental damage, and narrowing the wealth gap. While advocates held that it fuels frontier tech innovations — like advanced navigation and life-support systems. They believe that it will benefit daily life and satisfy humanity’s instinct to explore the unknown.
I side with the advocates. Space exploration is not a waste, but a far-sighted investment that pushes human to evolve and thrive.
Yours,
Li Hua

So I did what I felt right. I took a deep breath, fixed my eyes on the road ahead, and pedaled with every bit of strength I had. As I approached him, I could almost feel his heavy breathing beside me. I passed Samuel smoothly, keeping my pace steady until I crossed the finish line. As soon as the race was over, I didn’t stop to celebrate. Instead, I turned back and ran alongside Samuel at a gentle pace, calling out words of encouragement again and again until he finally crossed the line.
Standing on the podium, I saw Samuel smiling at me in the crowd. There was no bitterness in his eyes, only pride. He nodded slightly, as if to say he understood my choice. I touched the chocolate bar still in my pocket and smiled back. When the medal was placed around my neck, my heart was filled with mixed feelings — joy for the result, but even more gratitude toward Samuel. I pulled him closer onto the podium and told the host that this moment belonged to both of us, for his persistence had pushed me to go further. The applause rose around us. I understood something clearly: the bond we had built through years of riding together mattered far more than any medal.
