It's April 1,1911,and 32-year-old Albert Einstein sits on a train with his family. They are travelling
from Zurich to Prague, where Einstein has landed a job as a full professor of theoretical physics. He has
a few things on his mind, including money troubles, but the most critical is his unfinished theory of
relativity. When they leave the city 15 months later,Einstein will have cracked the code.
What happens over this long, unusual year in Prague is the question driving Ken Krimstein's new
novel Einstein in Kafkalandpart biography ()part historical fiction.Krimstein playfully
explores the possibilities, building, with footnotes,on a thorough collection of letters, diaries, and other
research. The result is an enjoyable, inspiring read made up of comics.
Krimstein also pairs Einstein's story with that of Franz Kafka, who was 28,virtually unpublished.
What ties the two together,in addition to a meeting at a club,is a preoccupation with getting at the
truth-the true truth".During Einstein's time in Prague,a time in which he works out his theory of
relativity,Kafka will have his own breakthrough. In one long feverish night he will pen the short story
The Judgment, which will launch an unequaled writing career forever transforming art and literature.
Like Einstein's completed, theory,Kafka's work, too, will offer the world a new way of thinking.
Despite having two characters'names in his title,Krimstein centers mainly on Einstein, and takes
us step by step through the meditations (that lead to his discovery.Nevertheless, along the way
he provides readers with a glimpse (into the life of Kafka. But what Kafka's presence most
crucially enables are imagined conversations between him and Einstein, where the two think hard about
what it means to see the world differently from everyone else.
At its heart,Einstein in Kafkaland is the story of ordinary genius. It unwraps the ways in which
genius so often arises out of ordinary circumstances.Perhaps even more absorbingly, the book tracks
how unimaginable discoveries develop following exchanges with others.

D.Gained insight into theoretical physics.
25.Which words can best describe Einstein's stay in Prague?
A.Eventful but unequaled.
B.Well-planned and enjoyable.
C.Rewarding and impactful.
D.Short-term but transformative.
26.How does Krimstein deal with Einstein in Kafkaland?
A.He makes it focus unevenly.
B.He writes it in a biographical style.
C.He gives it an appealing title
D.He includes many conversations in it.
27.Where is the text most probably taken from?
A.An introduction to a book.
B.An essay on Einstein's life
C.A fantasy about a travel.
D.A review of Prague's literature.

"The apple doesn't fall far from the tree."When it comes to device addiction, this may very well
be the case.If you believe that how you.engage with your.smartphone has no impact on your children,
think again
One study looked at 200 families and noted that the children of parents with phone addictions were
much more likely to have behavior issues. In short, this obsession led to "technoference"or interruption
of everyday interactions between.parents and kids.In some cases, this interruption happened in
face-to-face conversations, and in other cases, the devices disrupted playtime or meals. When this
type of technoference"occurred, parents rated their children as displaying more behavior problems,
including whining,.losing temper,.sulking(生闷气),and becoming frustrated.
In addition, according to children development experts, there are bilateral()signaling
systems that occur between adults and children, aiding the construction of the basic architecture of the
brain. For example, infants.and:toddlers are highly engaged with the vocal cues of their parents that
tend to happen with simplified grammar,a high-pitched tone, and exaggerated enthusiasm. This mode
of relational conversation is incredibly important to a child's development.
With the arrival of smartphones, many parents are distracted and stuck in what experts are
calling"continuous partial attention"mode. This leads to significant and recurring disruptions to the
parent-child conversation flow, which can impair not only 'a child's language learning ability but also
their school achievements overall.
While your habit may seem harmless, your kids may actually be imitating your behavior and
forming dependence of their own.One study reported that some teenagers may spend up to 12 hours-
half of an entire day-online and mindlessly swiping through social media apps without engaging
in any one piece of content beyond a few seconds.
As a parent, the best thing you can do is lead by example.Try to limit time spent with technology,
especially when it diverts()your attention from other priorities.Shut down smartphones at dinner.
Set aside phone-free time each day to engage with your children without the distraction that technology
brings. While you may not be able to completely cut ties with new modes of communication, you can
be sure that your children, get the one-on-one time they need to develop into healthy, happy adults.
28.Which is TRUE according to the studies in the passage?.
A.All parents rate their children's behavior at parent-child time interruptions.
B.Children's poor school achievements are due to their addiction to social media.
C.The more engagement of parents, the better development of speech in children.
D.Children imitate parents'behavior but form their own harmless habits.
29.What's the purpose of paragraph 3?
A.To further scientifically explain a child's behavioral problem
B.To give an argument for the problem of a child's language learning ability.
C.To support the argument for a child's addiction to devices.
D.To present background information for the topic of the passage
30.In what tone does the writer speak to parents in the last paragraph?
A.Disrespectful.
B.Apologetic.C.Negative.
D.Friendly.
31.Why does the writer start the passage with the quote"The apple doesn't fall far from the tree."?
A.To stress children will follow parents'example.
B.To provide evidence of device addiction.
C.To show the close bond between parents and children.
D.To highlight the final solution to device addiction.

We have more ways to access music than at any time in history and a whole world.of unfamiliar
styles to explore. The thrill of discovering new songs and new sounds can enrich people of all ages.
Except, most of the time,it doesn't.Our willingness to explore new, unfamiliar music declines with age.
Academics have coined the term"open-caredness"to describe this phenomenon.Until around the age of
11,children are generally happy to engage with unfamiliar music.Early adolescence sees a reduction in
open-earedness,but is accompanied by an intense increase in interest in music more generally.
Open-earedness increases slightly during young adulthood, and then declines as we age.
A major study involving more than 250,000 participants confirmed these changing behaviors. It
also showed that the significance we give to music after adolescence declines, and the amount of music
we listen to reduces from a high point of 20%of our waking time during adolescence,to 13%in
adulthood.
Researchers have different theories to account for these trends. One explanation for age-based
reduction in music consumption simply assumes that responsibility-burdened adults may have less free
time at their disposal(自由支配)to explore their musical interests than younger people.
Some interpret the observed decline in music engagement in terms of psychosocial maturation.
Adolescents use music as an identity mark er and engage with it to navigate social circles.Adults
have developed personalities and established social groups. As such, drivers to engage with new
music are lessened.
Some researchers argue that we shouldn't use a person's age to predict if their musical taste will
stay the same, without first thinking about how we enjoy and use music at different stages of our lives.
Teenagers tend to be very aware of what they are listening to.Adults who use music as motivation or
accompaniment for activities such as exercise or household chores may be less conscious of the extent
to which they actually do listen to new music.
32.What does the term"open-caredness"refer to in the passage?
A.The ability to play music.
B.The willingness to explore new music.
C.The interest in music during adolescence.
D.The significance of music in daily life.
33.According to the study, how does the amount of music listened to change as we age?
A.It remains consistent throughout life.
B.It increases from childhood to adulthood.
C.It peaks during adolescence and then decreases
D.It gradually declines from childhood to adulthood.
34.What factor is suggested as one cause for a reduced interest in new music as people age?
A.An increase in hearing sharpness.
B.Less spare time due to responsibilities.
C.An intense decrease in interest in music.
D.Changes in personality and social groups.
35.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.Music Consumption:A Lifelong Journey
‘,
B.Factors Influencing Music Engagement in Adults
C.Adolescents and Music:Identity and Exploration
D.Decline of Open-Earedness:Age Affects Music Exploration

I,a new joumalist for the Campus News, was curious who would be his dance partner and decided
to cover his story. When I accompanied him on the way home one day,we were approached by Kelsey
Stuart,a'popular.student.
"Derek,I'd like to ask you to the Dance,"she smiled.
Derek was shocked. He couldn't believe that one of the prettiest girls in school was asking him.
Derek's face went red."Why me?"he asked,"And shouldn't boys be the ones to do the asking?"
"I doubt you would, after all the rough experiences you've had.And we actually have more in
common than you think:We both really want to-go to the Dance. And we are not like those who are
only concerned about personal appearance."
"But what do you see in me?How can I be the sort of guy you want to go with?"
"I know you are'a gentleman and you'll treat me like a lady and I'll feel safe with you."she said,
leaving with a smile.
The entire school went crazy when they learned that Kelsey was Derek's dance partner.
At first there were words that were not so nice about them.Their classmate,Billy, made fun of
them by giving them stupid names.Betty,Kelsey's best friend, stopped hanging out with her because
she couldn't understand her choice at all.
