B I spent three years teaching English at a middle school in Sichuan, China. While teaching there, I had chances to travel all across China. My travel to the Gobi Desert was one of my favorites. My trip took me from the rainbow mountains of Zhangye Danxia. I ended at Dunhuang, one of the central parts of the Silk Road in the Gobi Desert. I did the journey all by myself. A trip alone meant that I had to depend on my Putonghua speaking skills. When I first arrived in China, my Putonghua was bad, but I tried to speak to local families and children on the trains to practice it. Mount Qomolangma was my last trip before leaving China. I traveled to the great Potala Palace in Lhasa, before making my way to the famous mountain with a tour group. It was amazing to put myself into local culture. I used my language skills to order food in the markets and translate into English when our guide couldn’t find a proper word to express something. Physically, I felt sick because of the high height and the thin air. As a result, I couldn’t sleep well at night. I remembered clearly waking up in the night to get my oxygen tank (氧气瓶) many times. However, I made it. After three days’ traveling, we finally saw sunset and sunrise at the top of Base Camp of Mount Qomolangma. The whole experience made me fall in love with traveling, and I felt like experiencing even more of the world. 25. How was the writer’s Putonghua when he first arrived in China? A. Good. B. Poor. C. Excellent. D. Unknown. 26. What was the writer’s last trip before leaving China? A. Mount Qomolangma. B. Zhangye Danxia. C. Dunhuang. D. Potala Palace. 27. Why couldn’t the writer sleep well at night? A. He felt uncomfortable on the high mountain. B. He had slept too much during the daytime. C. Animals and people were too noisy outside. D. He wanted to see sunset and sunrise very much. 28. Which words can best describe the writer’s trips in China? A. Boring and expensive. B. Scary and lonely. C. Difficult but wonderful. D. Relaxing but dangerous. C Sleep helps your body and brain. Yet many people don’t realize the importance of getting enough sleep. Sleep can make you stronger. When you sleep, your body gets busy fixing itself. It is like a construction site (建筑工地)! The “workers” inside your body repair your muscles and tissues (肌肉和组织). They also help make your immune system (免疫系统) stronger. Getting enough sleep helps you wake up feeling healthy and full of energy. Sleep can help you grow taller. For kids and teenagers, sleep plays an important role in their growth. A study shows that not getting enough sleep can lead to children being shorter. When you sleep, your body releases a growth hormone (激素). The more growth hormones it makes, the taller you will grow. So if you want to grow taller, you know what to do. Sleep can also help you remember information. When you sleep, your brain doesn’t stop working. Instead, it does different activities, especially during a time called REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. During this time, your brain goes over what you learned in the day. This helps you remember things better. If you read a book or practice a speech before bed, your brain can remember the information more easily. That’s a smart way to study! The science of sleep shows its importance to your body and mind. As you lie down each night, think about the amazing progress happening in your body. 29. How does the writer explain how the body fixes itself during sleep? A. By telling a story. B. By showing some examples. C. By sharing personal opinions. D. By comparing one thing to another. 30. What does the underlined word “releases” in Paragraph 3 probably mean in Chinese? A. 压缩 B. 控制 C. 分解 D. 释放 31. Which of the following can help you remember new English words better? A. Going over them only once in the day. B. Learning them as soon as you wake up. C. Eating something before learning them. D. Reading and writing them down before bed. 32. Why did the writer write the passage? A. To introduce an important holiday. B. To explain the importance of sleep. C. To show ways of keeping healthy. D. To give advice on how to sleep well. D Fast fashion makes clothes cheaper than ever, but it also hurts the environment. Many clothes are thrown away after being worn for only a short time. Each year, about 92 million tons of unwanted clothes end up in landfills (垃圾填埋场). That is like a rubbish truck full of clothes being thrown away every second. To fight this problem, Thomas Harter and his team have a creative idea. They want to turn unwanted clothes into stronger packaging (包装) materials. Here’s how it works. First, the clothes are cut into tiny pieces and mixed with water. Then the mixture is put through a special machine that separates the cotton fibers (纤维). Next, these fibers are mixed with recycled paper pulp (纸浆). This mixture then runs through traditional paper-making machines. The result is stronger paper than that made from recycled paper fibers alone. Why? Because clothes fibers are much longer than normal paper fibers. They lock together better, which makes the paper stronger. The new paper has a light brown color, but this does not matter. The paper can still be used for packaging materials. Best of all, it can be recycled even better than normal paper, which is good for the environment: This idea is still new. Harter and his team hope to make the process faster and cheaper in the future. If successful, it could greatly cut down on clothes waste. And the stronger paper would also last longer, which means less paper would be wasted. 33. What problem is mainly mentioned in paragraph 1? A. Rubbish trucks are not enough. B. Clothes waste is serious. C. Fast fashion makes clothes cheaper. D. People refuse to wear old clothes. 34. Why is the paper made from unwanted clothes stronger? A. Clothes are cut into tiny pieces. B. It is mixed with more water. C. Clothes fibers are longer than normal ones. D. It runs through special machines only. 35. What is the team’s future plan? A. To make the clothes-to-paper process faster and cheaper. B. To use less water in the clothes-to-paper process. C. To use as many new materials as possible. D. To make paper in different colors. 36. What is the best title for the passage? A. A New Life for Old Clothes B. The Science of Clothes Fibers C. How Machines Work in Paper-making D. A. Good. B. Poor. C. 29. How We Cut Down on Waste in daily Life 【答案】33. B 34.
