Learning Chinese is a challenging but good experience, as it gives you the opportunity to communicate with more than a billion people.
Foreigners think Chinese is a mysterious and difficult language because it is very different from the Roman alphabet (罗马字母). In fact, Chinese is not much more difficult than learning any other language. One reason is that Chinese does not have the kind of complex tenses (时态) like European languages.
Although it is certainly not easy for foreigners, in my experience you can learn Chinese quickly. You will certainly find differences between the language in textbooks and people’s everyday speech. One example of this is the differences between language on the street, written Chinese, and Internet culture. It produces new phrases and vocabulary. In real life nowadays, people often use short, less conversational phrases to communicate with each other.
China has many provinces (省) and their dialects are different. After you learn and understand the Beijing dialect, you may find it is hard to understand Shanghai dialect.

Passage 9
One day in 2011, the weather was fine. The French engineer, Jerome Michaud-Lariviere, was sitting in a park. Then he noticed the leaves on the trees moving. Suddenly, an idea came to his mind,“That’s energy. Why not make use of it?”
With this idea, Jerome quickly went back home. He decided to make a tree to produce electricity. At first, ▲ , because they thought it might take a lot of time to finish the design. However, the man didn’t give up easily. He organized a team and its members were all engineers. They did some research and tried many methods. After three years of hard work, they finally developed a nearly eight-meter-tall Wind Tree. It looks like a tree. Its plastic leaves can turn and produce electricity even when there is a little wind. Each year, one Wind Tree can produce nearly18,000 kWh, which is enough to support a family of four. This could cut the yearly carbon emissions(碳排放) of the family by over 12 tons. Even better, the trees make little noise when they are working. This isn’t detrimental to humans or animals, and it’s good for the environment.
Jerome also made three different colors of leaves besides the common green, blue and orange in order to meet different people’s needs. So far, 130 Wind Trees have been “planted” around the world.
The Wind Tree is a meaningful invention that makes clean energy and helps protect the environment. Jerome said, “We hope Wind Trees can be connected with other methods such as geothermal power(地热发电) and energy-saving buildings. In the future, we will develop a perfect Wind Tree system.”

Passage 10
The Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling is considered to be one of the most popular stories all over the world. There are plenty of life lessons that can be learned from the series. Here are four of my favorites:
Friends will always try their best to help you.
Whenever Harry finds himself in trouble, Ron and Hermione face it with him together. Harry, Ron and Hermione help each other with their own talents. With the support of friends, anything is possible.
It is great to be smart, but sometimes it isn’t the most important thing.
There are more important things than smartness—friendship and courage. As Hermione points out, sometimes knowing the right answer is not enough. Although Harry may fail without the help of Hermione, his courage makes him able to fight for what he believes in.
You control your future through the choices that you make.
Sometimes it may seem everything is out of your hands. However, with the right mindset (心态), you can control your life. For teenagers, everything seems to be controlled by pressure from parents, teachers and friends. However, your thoughts and actions can make everything change.
Love is the most powerful weapon (武器) you can have.
Love saves Harry many times throughout the stories. Harry understands that he is more powerful than Voldemort, not because he is better wizard (男巫) but because Voldemort never knows love. Harry’s love for his friends allows him to put them before himself. It is just love that makes Harry Potter go through hard times.

Passage 14
These days, teenagers are heavily influenced by the media (媒体). Many of them use the Internet for thousands of hours. That’s more time than they spend with teachers at school, and even more than the hours they spend watching TV and reading newspapers.
However, some studies show a serious problem: today’s teenagers lack media literacy (素养).That’s to say, they have difficulty telling the right from the wrong about the information. One study was done on middle school students. It showed that more than 80% of them couldn’t tell the difference between real news and ads that looked like news.
Professor Kevin John tried to help his students learn media literacy. He gave an example that shows why media literacy is important. In the example, two news stations report a snowstorm. One pays attention to the terrible road conditions. The other pays attention to kids playing in the snow. “News stations tell you the important details (细节) on what they feel. These details depend on the opinions of the news reporter,” said john. “A person who has media literacy will know that each story is just about one part of the event at that time. There is more going on.”
Some people think school is the best place to teach media literacy. Others believe everyone—from parents to reporters—should help teenagers learn it.
As for the best time to start learning media literacy, many people suggest the age of twelve. But some ideas can be taught even earlier. “It’s never too early to start learning media literacy,” John said.

Passage 16
We can do many interesting chemical tests in our class. Today, we will use CO₂ to blow up a balloon! Mixing baking soda (小苏打) with vinegar (醋) together can give off the CO₂.
What you’ll need
(1) A balloon
(2) About 40 ml of water
(3) A soft drink bottle
(4) Vinegar or lemon juice
(5) A teaspoon of baking soda
Instructions
●Before you begin, make sure that you pull the balloon long to make it as easy as possible to blow up.
●Put the 40 ml of water into the soft drink bottle.
●Add the baking soda and mix it with water.
●Put the vinegar in and quickly put the balloon over the mouth of the bottle.
What’s happening?
If all goes well, then the balloon should become bigger and bigger! Adding the vinegar to the baking soda creates a chemical effect. The baking soda is a base (碱), while the vinegar is an acid (酸). When the two are mixed, they’ll create CO₂. The gas rises up and runs away through the soft drink bottle. However, it doesn’t get away from the balloon, pushing it outwards and blowing it up.

The National Report on Vision (视力) says the population of Chinese with short-sightedness (近视) has reached 600 million, and about 70% of the teenagers (aged from 13 to 19) are short-sighted.
China Daily reported more serious vision problems in China. In the report, 80% senior high school students are short-sighted, followed by 71% in junior high school, 36% in primary school and 14% of 6-year-olds. One day in 2011, the weather was fine. The French engineer, Jerome Michaud-Lariviere, was sitting in a park. Then he noticed the leaves on the trees moving. Suddenly, an idea came to his mind,“That’s energy. Why not make use of it?”

Passage 10
The Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling is considered to be one of the most popular stories all over the world. There are plenty of life lessons that can be learned from the series. Here are four of my favorites:

It is great to be smart, but sometimes it isn’t the most important thing.
