Tom Brady, a Californian, was an excellent quarterback(四分卫)at Junipero Serra High School. But when he arrived at the University of Michigan, he didn’t see much playing time during his first three years on campus. He considered going back to a college in California, but he decided to stick it out. He didn’t become a starter until the second half of his senior year. After becoming a National Football League(NFL)player, he was not allowed to play as a starter. However, he kept improving his skills and preparing each week like he was the starter.
In 200l, his second season, he only got in on the act because the starter was injured. Fans though Tom would be just a fill-in. But Tom led his team New England Patriots to a victory in his first start, then they won four of five, and then finished the year with six victories. Each week he seemed to get a little better, and people began to recognize him as a dark horse. New England Patriots got into the Super Bowl, fighting against the defending(卫冕的)champions St.Louis Rams. Tom led a final-minute game-winning drive. He was no longer a nobody.
Today, Brady is considered perhaps the greatest quarterback ever. He’d become a superstar. Yet he had never lost that fire, that drive, and that sense that the world didn’t believe in him. At 37, he said that he would play until fifty if his body allowed him to do so. And he even told his teammates that he wanted to play forever if possible.
His teammates had dreamed of being him. Hogan was thirteen in February of 2002 when Brady and New England Patriots beat St.Louis Rams. Lengel was eleven at the time, watching with his grandfather in Kentucky. White was ten in Florida. Mitchell was nine in Georgia. These teammates were Tom’s big fans who since childhood had viewed from TV how he did the impossible. “He gave us the encouragement,” Hogan said.
He kept telling his teammates to keep going when the game wasn’t over. He isn’t the biggest, the fastest, and the strongest football player in the world. But he may be the most strong-minded.
4. When did Brady start to become known?

B. When he entered a team of a college in California.

5. What can we say about Brady after he achieved fame?

D. He has changed his style of playing football.
6. Why were Brady’s teammates mentioned in Paragraph 4?
A. To show his friendliness to others.
B. To show he has a very strong will.
C To show he has the best teammates.
D. To show his big influence on others.
7. What can we learn from Brady’s experiences?
A. Never judge a book by its cover.

C. To eat the fruit, you must climb the tree.
D. In time of danger, one’s mind works fast.

Natural selection is the process by which one type of animal within a species thrives because of certain qualities that make it more likely to live than others in its group. The history of the peppered moth (灰蛾) is an example of the natural selection process.
In nineteenth-century England, certain types of peppered moths were able to better blend (融合) into their surroundings. During that time period, great changes were happening in Great Britain. The Industrial Revolution was part of this change, and with it came air pollution. Natural selection often takes hundreds or even thousands of years to occur. For the peppered moth, this process occurred comparatively (相对地) quickly.
At the beginning of the Industrial Age, most peppered moths in England were light-colored and covered with black markings, although a few moths had dark-colored wings. Because the light-colored moths blended into the light-colored bark on the trees, they could not be easily seen by birds that would eat them. As the air grew more polluted, however, tree trunks became covered with soot (煤烟) and became darker. The light-colored moths became easy for birds to see against the dark tree trunks. Since the dark-colored moths now had the advantage, their numbers grew. Within 50 years, the peppered moth went from being mostly light-colored to being mostly dark-colored.
In the twentieth century, the air cleared up, and the peppered moth population changed again. As tree trunks lightened due to less soot in the air, light-colored moths once again had an advantage. Their numbers increased as soot levels declined (下降). Depending on their environment, the coloration of the moths helped them to be “naturally selected” to survive.
8. Which of the following can replace the word “thrives” in the first paragraph?
A. reduces B. endangers C. increases D. changes
9. What do we know about the peppered moth’s natural selection process?
A. The length of time was unusual.
B. It was a good example of environmental protection.
C. This type of color change was typical for moths.
D. The soot levels in England did not affect it.
10. What can we learn from the third paragraph?
A. The color of moths was unimportant.
B. Both kinds of moths preferred the dark-colored trees.
C. There were more light-colored moths than dark-colored moths.
D. The number of moths had something to do with the level of air pollution.
11. Which would most likely happen if soot darkened England’s trees again?
A. Birds would eat fewer moths.
B. Moths would not be able to stay alive.
C. The population of dark-colored moths would increase.
D. Light-colored moths would disturb people’s life.
D
Teens are now less likely to do part time jobs, drink alcohol or go out without their parents than their counterpart 10 or 20 years ago. This generation of teens is delaying the responsibilities and pleasures of adulthood. Some people think that today's teens are more virtuous(品行端正的)and responsible.Others have suggested that today's teens aren't working because they are simply lazy.
To figure out what's really going on,we should look at these trends with"life history theory" taken into consideration.A"fast life method"was the more common parenting approach in the mid-20th century, when fewer labor-saving devices were available and the average woman had four children. The parents needed to focus on day to day survival. As a result, kids needed to care for themselves sooner.A"slow life method"on the other hand is more common in times and places where families have fewer children and spend more time on each child's growth and development. When the average family has two children, preparing for college can begin as early as primary schools. The two methods are adaptations to a particular cultural background,so each isn't naturally"good"or"bad".
Delaying exposure to alcohol, then, could make young adults less prepared to deal with drinking in college. One study found teens who rapidly increased there binge-drinking(酗酒)were more at risk of alcohol dependence than those who learned to drink over a longer period of time. The same might be true of teens who don't work, drive or go out much in high school. College administrators describe students who can't do anything without calling their parents. Employers worry that more young employees lack the ability to work independently.
However,the"slow-life method"is also likely beneficial as teens are spending more time developing socially and emotionally before they drive, drink alcohol and work for pay.The key is to make sure that teens eventually get the opportunity to develop the skills they will need as adults: independence, along with social and decision making skills. For parents, this might mean pushing their teenagers out of the house more.
12. According to the text, teens in the past were more____.
A. reliable B. outgoing
C intelligent D. independent
13. What plays a vital role in the trend of teens growing up more slowly?
A. Social standard
B. Cultural changes
C. Educational development.
D. Methods of education
14. What does the author advise parents to do?
A. Spend less time in accompanying their children.
B. .Force their children to leave home at an early age.
C. Encourage their children to take part in social activities.
D. Help their children to get to adulthood as soon as possible.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. How teens develop skills they need in future
B. Teens take no responsibility for what they do
C. Why today's teens aren't in any hurry to grow up
D. Nowadays teens can't make decisions by themselves

A. After he took the place of an NFL player as a starter.
B. When he entered a team of a college in California.
C. After he played for the University of Michigan.
D. When he became an NFL player.
5. What can we say about Brady after he achieved fame?
A. He cares less about winning or losing.
B. He has kept his strong liking for football.
C. He spends more time improving his team.
D. He has changed his style of playing football.
6. Why were Brady’s teammates mentioned in Paragraph 4?
A. To show his friendliness to others.
B. To show he has a very strong will.
C. To show he has the best teammates.
D. To show his big influence on others.
7. What can we learn from Brady’s experiences?
A. Never judge a book by its cover.

根据第二段“In 200l, his second season, he only got in on the act because the starter was injured. He was no longer a nobody.”(在2001年,他的第二个赛季,他只是因为首发球员受伤才参加比赛。
根据第三段第二三句话“He’d become a superstar. Yet he had never lost that fire, that drive, and that sense that the world didn’t believe in him.”(他已经变成超级明星。
根据第四段中的“These teammates were Tom’s big fans who since childhood had viewed from TV how he did the impossible. “He gave us the encouragement,” Hogan said.”(这些队员是汤姆的超级粉丝,他们从小时候就从电视上看到汤姆是如何将不可能的事做到的。)
根据最后一段“He kept telling his teammates to keep going when the game wasn’t over. He isn’t the biggest, the fastest, and the strongest football player in the world. But he may be the most strong-minded.”(他一直告诉队友,只要比赛没有结束就要继续前进。 可知,从布雷迪的经历我们可以学到的是,要永不放弃,与B选项“The secret of success is to stick it out.”(成功的秘诀是永不放弃。)

C 9. A 10. D 11. C
根据文章第一段画线单词后“Natural selection is the process by which one type of animal within a species thrives because of certain qualities that make it more likely to live than others in its group. (自然选择是指一个物种中的一种动物因为具有某些品质而比其他动物更有可能存活下来而thrives的过程。)”可知使得动物容易存活,所以指的是动物数量的增加,蓬勃发展,故C选项increases(增长,增强)与划线词意义一致。故选C。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第二段“Natural selection often takes hundreds or even thousands of years to occur. For the peppered moth, this process occurred comparatively (相对地) quickly. (自然选择通常需要数百年甚至数千年才能发生。对于灰蛾来说,这个过程发生得相对较快。)”可知,灰蛾在自然选择的过程中所花的时间长度是不同寻常的。故选A。
根据文章第三段“At the beginning of the Industrial Age, most peppered moths in England were light-colored and covered with black markings, although a few moths had dark-colored wings. (在工业时代初期,英国的大多数斑蛾都是浅色的,身上有黑色的斑纹,尽管有一些蛾子的翅膀是深色的。)”以及“As the air grew more polluted, however, tree trunks became covered with soot (煤烟) and became darker. The light-colored moths became easy for birds to see against the dark tree trunks. Since the dark-colored moths now had the advantage, their numbers grew. Within 50 years, the peppered moth went from being mostly light-colored to being mostly dark-colored.
根据文章第三段“As the air grew more polluted, however, tree trunks became covered with soot (煤烟) and became darker. The light-colored moths became easy for birds to see against the dark tree trunks.
To figure out what's really going onwe should look at these trends with"life history theory" taken into consideration.A"fast life method"was the more common parenting approach in the mid-20th century, when fewer labor-saving devices were available and the average woman had four children.
A. reliable B. outgoing
C. intelligent D. independent
13. What plays a vital role in the trend of teens growing up more slowly?
A. Social standard
B. Cultural changes
C. Educational development.
D Methods of education
D 13. B 14. C 15. C

根据第一段中的“This generation of teens is delaying the responsibilities and pleasures of adulthood.”可知,这一代青少年推迟了成年的责任和快乐,再根据第二段中的“As a result, kids needed to care for themselves sooner.”
根据第二段中的“To figure out what's really going on,we should look at these trends with"life history theory" taken into consideration.”
根据最后一段中的“The key is to make sure that teens eventually get the opportunity to develop the skills they will need as adults: independence, along with social and decision making skills. For parents, this might mean pushing their teenagers out of the house more.”
Teens are now less likely to do part time jobs, drink alcohol or go out without their parents than their counterpart 10 or 20 years ago. This generation of teens is delaying the responsibilities and pleasures of adulthood.(与十年或二十年前的同龄人相比,现在的青少年不太可能在没有父母陪伴的情况下做兼职、喝酒或外出。
