But James wishes he could spend more time with his mom and less with the unemotional robot. He looks forward to school, which is a robot-free place. But that changes after his school uses a robot, Schoolbot 9000, to help students do better in exams. Schoolbot is expected to help the teachers but soon replaces them. Sometimes, Schoolbot is helpful—it turns a dry history lesson into an interesting song the class loves. However, for the most part, Schoolbot oversteps its bounds (越界) , closing projects (项目) and leaving unkind words for students. It even breaks a violin because it doesn’t think the student can play it well. Ask the Writer ◆How did you get the idea for this book? I came up with the idea while I was writing stories about smart robots. I realized that today’s kids would grow up with AI. I wanted to write a story that helps discuss important questions, such as “Is technology becoming too big a part of our lives?” ◆How long did it take you to write? I started working on the book in 2021. I wrote most of the text, then I created the pictures. ◆What books did you enjoy when you were growing up? Instead of going to class, kids can have snowball fights and enjoy the snow. But snow days are now a thing of the past in one South Carolina school district (区). The district asks students to have online classes on snow days. Students use a computer to do schoolwork at home. E-learning is used so that there is less need for makeup days in summer. But not everyone thinks this is sensible. Here, two students share their ideas. YES!                         by Tom Johnson, 10 I think kids should go to school online on a snow day. When there is a heavy snow, school is closed and kids have nothing to do but watch television and play computer games. How boring! If students could go to school online on snow days, they would have something useful to do. With e-learning, kids would still get time to play in the snow, but they would also have something to do when they couldn’t get out of the house. E-learning on snow days would be a welcome change! NO!                         by Gabriela Quesada, 10 Kids need to go to school, but they should not have to go to school online on a snow day. During snowstorms, many people lose power (电). Sometimes, you can’t use the internet. If kids don’t have power, how are they going to use the computer? When I was small and lived in Spain, I experienced something similar. My dad wanted me to do online schoolwork on a snow day. But the power was out and there was no internet, so I couldn’t. Even if there is internet, the online schoolwork might be difficult for students. They might need help from teachers. On a snow day, kids and teachers should use the time to rest and enjoy the snow. 19.What is Tom against (反对) doing on snow days? A.Going to school. B.Playing in the snow. C.Watching TV in the house. D.Having online classes. 20.What does Tom think of e-learning on snow days? A.Impossible. B.Difficult. C.Helpful. D.Boring. 21.What happened to Gabriela when she was in Spain? A.Her homework was too difficult. B.There was no power at school. C.She had to go to school even on snow days. D.She couldn’t study online. 22.What is Gabriela worried about? Body language, like facial expressions, is the mirror of a person’s feelings. It helps us communicate without saying much at all. ②Sometimes we can share the common sense from culture to culture. Turning red-faced shows one’s anger, shock or excitement. The wide eyes with a half-opened mouth mean surprise. Also, some other body movements can express the same meanings in different cultures. For example, being back in one’s seat and yawning at a talk show people are not interested, and looking at the watch from time to time in a conversation means people have something to do in a hurry. ③However, not all body language can show the same meanings in different cultures. What holds true for Indians may not be the same in Africa. First of all, in some cultures, people respect and encourage the direct eye contact. In English, there is a saying, “Don’t trust anyone who won’t look you in the eye.” In many countries, direct eye contact between two people is considered important. According to most Western cultures, if a person looks directly at you, it is a sign that the person is honest and sincere and even can be trusted. While many cultures believe that direct eye contact from a child to an adult is an act of respect. ④The OK sign, which is commonly used in many cultures, also has different meanings across the cultures. It means agreement in North American culture. But to French, it means “zero” or “valueless”, not “fine” or “OK”. Touching is another example. At times, saying hello could turn into a disaster if one does not consider the use of touch in another culture. A general and accepted way of saying “Hello” in Western culture is a simple handshake. A great deal of importance has been placed on how one should shake hands. ⑤So, the next time you decide to travel to another country, besides looking up places to visit, a quick search or a book can guide you on how to use proper body language to better communicate with the local people, and avoid being impolite to them during your stay! 23.What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 1 refer to? A.A silent film. B.The mirror. C.Body language. D.A person’s feeling. 24.According to the passage, which one has the similar meaning from culture to culture? A.Turning red-faced. B.Direct eye contact. C.The OK sign. D.A simple handshake. 25.Which of the following best shows the structure (结构) of the passage? A. B. C. D. 26.Which of the following is the best title for the passage? A.Students cannot get help B.Teachers cannot test students C.Parents pay too much money D.There is too much homework C ①Have you ever watched a silent film and tried to guess what the characters were saying? A.Body language is more important B.Body language helps you go travelling C.Body language changes among cultures D.Body language influences communication D An American asks on his own Twitter. “Why do you like living in China?” Let’s read the answers from people around the world. My cousin and I had all the Calvin and Hobbes comic strip collections (连环漫画) between us. We would share them with each other! ◆ ▲ ? Watch different kinds of cartoons and read different kinds of comic strips to see what resonates (产生共鸣) the most with you. That will help you find what to write about. 16.What does James wish to do? A.To use a robot at school. B.To have a robot in his home. C.To spend less time with a robot. D.To write a story that helps discuss important questions. 17.Which is TRUE about Schoolbot 9000? A.It is not always polite. B.It never oversteps its bounds. C.It always stops students from using unkind words. D.It always encourages students when they can’t do anything well. 18.Which is probably the missing sentence in the blank “ ▲ ”? A.What advice do you have for us B.Why do you like the comic strips C.How did you learn to draw the pictures D.When should we start to learn writing B For many kids, a snow day is the reason for celebration.
