Here are some climbing spots for climbers. Acadia National Park, Maine This popular New England park is one of the few places where you can climb seaside rocks. The granite (花岗岩) is good for climbing. In some areas, you need to start when the sea is at its lowest level. The area has guides, instructors and climbing schools, making it particularly welcoming for beginners. City of Rocks National Reserve, Idaho This national reserve near the Utah border is worth a trip for the scenery alone. Named by gold miners heading to California in 1849, its granite looks like skyscrapers, towering 600 feet above the ground. It's a fascinating area from the geologic and geographic angles. Many visitors come for August's Idaho Mountain Festival, a celebration of climbing with top athletes in attendance. Earth Treks Englewood, Colorado While you can find climbing gyms across the country, this one just in the south of Denver is worth a special trip. With more than 53,000 square feet, the massive facility has a special rock climbing area, a group of guides and even extras like childcare and yoga. 1.What is special about Acadia National Park? B Sofia Zalazar was born with a cleft (唇裂), so expressing herself vocally was difficult while she was growing up. The other children laughed at her for the way she spoke, and she struggled to feel like she fit in. Sofia was fitted with a bulb (咽球) that fit inside her mouth to help her form accurate sounds. While Sofia began to make great progress in speaking clearly, she still felt embarrassed around her classmates. During school lunches, she didn't want any of them to see her remove her bulb in order that she could eat. She would slip into the bathroom before the meal to remove it, and then remain silent throughout lunch while her classmates chatted and laughed all around her. The process made her feel lonely even when she was surrounded by others. When she was 15, Sofia learned that Smile Train, the world's largest cleft charity, would sponsor local professionals at nearby Notti Hospital to perform the operation she had waited so long for. She was overjoyed at the prospect of removing her bulb for good and living a confident life. Now, Sofia no longer requires a bulb! The operation and ensuing treatments Smile Train sponsored also resulted in permanent speech improvements that made an immediate positive impact on the teenager's daily life. After Sofia shared a few verses of her favourite song in a Smile Train video, something truly remarkable happened. Sebastian Yatra, the Colombian singer and songwriter who wrote the hit, saw the video and recorded a special message just for her! Sofia was so excited by Sebastian's message and by the incredible effect her own voice made! Smile Train has helped more than 1.5 million children like Sofia, and it continues to let smiles heal families all over the world. 4.What does the underlined part “expressing herself vocally” mean in Paragraph 1? A.Screaming hard. B.Speaking weakly. C.Talking actively. D.Pronouncing properly. 5.Which one was a challenge for Sofia with a bulb? A.Chatting freely. B.Looking natural. C.Eating things. A.It has a lasting and huge effect on their lives. B.It offers a one-time solution to their physical challenges. C.It provides a momentary improvement for their confidence. D.It is limited and does not address their emotional needs. C It keeps what's inside a mystery until you open it. There are usually toys in mystery boxes; but now, food has been added to the list. Recently, the trend of “leftover mystery boxes” has become popular in many Chinese cities such as Beijing, Nanjing and Chengdu. Stores pack boxes full of unsold food or food nearing its expiration date at low prices. “We make the leftover mystery boxes available to buy at the end of the day,” Wu Tian, a staff member at a convenience chain store in Beijing, told China Daily. The food, such as milk, bread and sandwiches, is sold at about half the original price and is usually sold out quickly. Many bakeries have also joined the “mystery box club”. “Due to their low cost, leftover mystery boxes are promising as a new business model and attract consumers,” Hong Yong, a Commerce Ministry expert, told China Daily. “They also follow zero-waste and environmental protection concepts.” However, some people have raised food security concerns. If consumers buy a food mystery box for their breakfast the next morning, even if the food looks fine at the moment, it may have gone bad overnight. Moreover, food made in the store, such as bread, isn't labeled with the production date in many cases, according to China Consumer News. If a consumer unpacks a mystery box and discovers that the food tastes bad or has already passed the last date, then it will be difficult for them to protect their rights, such as getting money back. Only by considering both food safety and consumer rights can mystery blind boxes achieve a win-win situation for both buyers and sellers, commented China Youth Daily. 8.What leads to the rise of the trend of “leftover mystery boxes”? A.It offers customers lower prices for those unsold food. B.Stores make the leftover mystery boxes available at night. C.People feel like such food as milk and bread more attractive. D.It goes against the concept of zero-waste and environmental protection. 9.What does the underlined word “expiration” in Paragraph 2 mean? A.Buying. B.Ending. C.Producing. D.Selling. 10.Why are some people worried about customers buying a food mystery box? A.Because customers' rights are hard to protect. B.Because the food has gone bad when it's bought. C.Because the production dates are not clear enough. D.Because customers cannot get a refund in many cases. 11.What is the author's attitude towards the leftover mystery boxes? A.Supportive. B.Disapproving. C.Objective. D.Doubtful. D “The weather station in Furnace Creek, Death Valley, California, reported a temperature of 54.4℃ on 16 August,” said Clare Nullis, World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) spokesperson. “If verified (证实), it would be the highest temperature on Earth since 1931, and the third-hottest temperature ever recorded on the planet.” Speaking in Geneva, Ms Nullis told reporters that WMO had tasked a group of international experts to check the reading by examining the observation (观测), the equipment used, and how it compared to data collected at nearby stations. According to WMO's data, the hottest temperature ever recorded was in Furnace Creek, Death Valley, California, reaching 56. 7℃ on 10 July 1913. The next highest temperature was set in July 1931 in Kebili, Tunisia, reaching 55℃. Other high temperature records include 54℃ in Mitribah, Kuwait on 21 July 2016. The findings show that the equipment at Furnace Creek meteorological station was in proper working condition at the time of Sunday's observation, Ms Nullis noted. “Although the full verification process will likely take many months,” Ms Nullis said, “all the markers so far show that this is a fair and acceptable observation.” The very hot conditions have come along with a heatwave on the US west coast. The US National Weather Service (NWS) has issued (发布) numerous heat warnings explaining that the high temperatures will continue this week. The NWS in Las Vegas, which covers the Death Valley area, said online, “We are faced with a long-lasting heat event. Another run at 54.4℃-plus temperatures in Death Valley remains possible.” The development follows repeated warnings from WMO about high temperatures which are having a bad influence, causing wildfires in places such as forests and grasslands. 12.What is the highest temperature recorded on Earth since 1913? A.55.0℃. B.56.7℃. C.54.4℃. D.54.0℃. 13.What does Ms Nullis think of the observation in Furnace Creek? A.It's changeable. B.It's incorrect. C.It's believable. D.It's unfair. 14.What can we infer about the Death Valley area from the last two paragraphs? A.It will probably see hotter weather. B.It was badly hit by deadly wildfires. C.It will face temperature drops this week. D.It was well-known for its good grasslands. 15.Which is the most suitable title for the text? Across the street from the shop was a gas station where the Greyhound bus stopped, which was closed for New Year, but I saw a family standing outside the locked door, gathering closely together under the narrow overhang in an attempt to keep dry. Once we got home, there was barely time to enjoy our presents. We had to go off to our grandparents' house for our annual family dinner. As we drove down the highway through town, I noticed that the family was still there, standing outside the closed gas station. My father was driving very slowly down the highway. The closer we got to the turnoff (岔道) for my grandparents' house, the slower the car went. Suddenly, my father made a U-turn in the middle of the road and said that he couldn't stand it. “What?” asked my mother. “It's those people back there at the station, standing in the rain. They've got children. It's New Year. I can't stand it.” When my father pulled into the service station, I saw that there were five of them: the parents and three children—two girls and a small boy, who were getting wet standing there. My father rolled down his window. “Happy New Year,” he said. “Thanks. You, too,” the man replied. He was very tall and had to bend slightly to look into the car. “Are you waiting for the bus?” my father asked. The man said that they were. Knowing the bus wouldn't come along for several hours, my father invited them to our home to shelter from the rain. 注意:续写词数应为150左右。 The man thought about it for a moment, but then refused.__________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ When we got out of the car at our house, the three children ran through the front door happily. _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ 外研版英语必修第二册综合检测练习卷 (考查范围:Unit 1—Unit 6 时间:100分钟 分值:120分) Ⅰ. 阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分) A 1. My father explained that the rain would last long and our house was near the station. After my parents' strong persuasion, he finally agreed and thanked us all the time. They climbed into the car. They had no luggage, only the clothes they were wearing. Once they settled in, my father looked back over his shoulder handing them some tissues to wipe the rainwater from their faces. When we got out of the car at our house, the three children ran through the front door happily. My mother noticed all their clothes were wet, so she found some of ours for them to change. Jill and I decided to share our New Year presents with the children. One of the girls chose Jill's doll and immediately hugged it to her breast.
