I jumped up high in the air and landed in the sandpit. “3.55 meters!” the referee (裁判) announced. The result was my best by then, but I was not 36 with it.
I have been competing in the long jump since primary school, so for me, I was likely to succeed. But this time, 37 seemed far from me. After trying several times, I lost heart and wanted to give up.
As I reached the last round of the jump, my worry and fear built up inside. It seemed that all my 38 had been meaningless. I stood at the starting line, my mind totally blank and my hands 39 . After hearing my classmates’ cheers around me, I started running. I tried using my arms and shoulders to run faster, but my body started to show signs of 40 .
As the highlight of this term, this long-awaited sports event became my Waterloo. 41 failure was the last thing I wanted. When my best friends came to comfort me, I couldn’t even say a word.

We meet different kinds of failures everywhere. Failure makes us better understand 43 disadvantages. And it can make us get stronger and stronger. That’s because it not only allows us to learn lessons from it, but also helps us make progress. What’s more, failure offers us a chance to 44 our bad feelings with friends, which can help to develop our friendship. This is what I’ve learned in the long jump. If I meet any difficulty in my life later on, I will 45 think of this experience. With my head held high, I think I will face the problems ahead more bravely.

The “59 smiles” taken by an elderly woman in Wuhan, Hubei Province, in about six months tell a big story. The smiles are from the 59 people who offered her seats on buses. “Everybody can be a good citizen, because in many cases a friendly smile is all that is needed to build a better world,” says Tu Lihua in an article on the Internet. She has taken photographs of the people who offered their seats to her on buses. The 59 photographs are good memories for her. Some of the smiles are shy, some friendly, while others are like sunshine.
The old lady is not good at taking photos with her smartphone, and some of them are blurry. However, the series of photographs became famous immediately on the Internet.
The photographs of smiles that the old lady has taken show people’s care and love for others, which is becoming valuable in today’s society. Her act also expressed her thanks to those who have helped her.
Offering one’s seat to elderly people on buses has become a hot topic of discussion. There have been many cases of quarrels (争吵) between the young and the old. That would not happen if we had thought more about others and also been more thankful when others offered help.

Wetlands are land areas covered by water most of the time. The water here can be fresh water, salty water or a mix of both. They form naturally, or humans can make them when water gathers and cannot flow away. Wetlands can be found on almost every continent (大洲).
Wetlands are really important. They are home to about 100,000 kinds of animals. Around 40% of the world’s plants and animals rely on wetlands to survive. Wetlands also help fight climate change. They take in lots of carbon, which helps cut down CO2 in the air. When heavy rains come, wetlands store water to reduce floods. In dry seasons, they slowly let stored water go to help fight droughts (干旱). Over 1 billion people live on wetlands and make a living by fishing, growing rice or working in tourism. In fact, food grown in wetlands feeds more than half of the world’s population.
However, wetlands are disappearing at a fast speed. Since 1970, more than 33% of wetlands have been lost. Waste from daily life and factory production harms these areas. Dams (水坝) stop rivers and this shrinks wetlands. Invasive species (入侵物种) also cause trouble. Some of these plants grow very fast. They push out local plants and take away oxygen from the water, which is bad for fish.
Protecting wetlands needs action from all over the world. In 1971, some countries signed the Convention on Wetlands; up to now, 172 countries have joined it. For example, in 2020, China’s wetland protection rate was 52.7%. It plans to raise this rate by 2.4% every five years. The UK also has a plan: it will create and repair 1,000 km² of wetlands by 2050.
Protecting wetlands is not just the government’s job. Everyone can do something to help. Simple things like planting local trees near rivers or joining clean-up activities can make a big difference. If we value wetlands and work together, we can protect these important ecosystems for our planet’s future.

55.主旨大意题。文章倒数第二段提到“Protecting wetlands needs action from all over the world.”以及列举了中国和英国保护湿地的计划,最后一段提到“Protecting wetlands is not just the government’s job. Everyone can do something to help.”以及具体的保护措施,所以这两段主要讲述了如何保护湿地。故选D。
