WHAT IS WIND CHILL?
When you check the predicted temperature, you may sometimes be greeted with two values:
the air temperature and the 'feels like'temperature. The main temperature value represents how
hot or cold the air is,but the second temperature takes the strength of the wind into account.
Called wind chill, this value indicates how the air temperature will feel on your skin when you
step outside. When there is more wind, heat escapes from you more quickly, lowering the wind
chill temperature.
Displaying this value on forecasts means that people can make a more informed decision on
what to wear and even whether to go outside. When wind chill reduces the temperature far into
negative values, skin temperature will decrease rapidly, followed by your internal body
temperature. This increases the chances of developing hypothermia(体温过低)and frostbite,
Wind chill not only impacts humans, but other animals and plants as well.In plants, wind
chill stresses don't come from heat loss.Rather, wind chill increases the moisture (loss
from leaves and dries out the plant.Whether it's in the form of drying or freezing, wind chill
calculations show the great influence of the wind on the temperature of your environment.
Check this chart to see how the wind alters the temperature your body feels.

There's something timelessly immersive about audio storytelling-and Naomi Shah knows
it.At 24,she established Meet Cute,an entertainment company specializing in short-form audio
romantic comedies. It has produced some 250 titles and reached 8.6 million downloads across
streaming services.
From day one,Meet Cute's mission was "to build stories at the speed of culture,"Shah
says."If something is trending on socials,we're able to incorporate it into a story."Moving
quickly and meeting audiences "where they're at,"Shah says, enables Meet Cute to be "part of
the conversation.”
Growing up in Portland,Ore.,Shah loved creative writing but was identified as a "STEM
kid."She majored in mechanical engineering.Wanting something more creative and founder-
facing, she joined the investment team at Union Square Ventures. Her employer wanted better
odds, but the team couldn't find an entrepreneur (with a convincing proposal. So Shah
wrote one herself, drawing up the blueprints for such a company.Later,Union Square
contributed the first of $9.3 million in backing.
While Shah is a rom-com fan,she envisions Meet Cute's appeal lying not in specific genre
(conventions,but in general feel-good,nonprescriptive escapism."Rom-coms stand for
hope,human connection and love,"says Shah.But why this approach-brief,audible,and
upbeat?According to Shah,Meet Cute"[brings]entertainment into day-to-day tasks and pockets of
time"when you can't dedicate hours to a screen.Plus,without concrete visuals,listeners'
imaginations run wild."Every single person is in the director's seat, she says.
Earlier this year, the company was acquired by Fox Entertainment, where Shah now serves
as senior vice president of strategy and operations.Meet Cute can now tap the wealth of Fox-
owned stories and convert them to audio, and it has multiple global platforms on which to
distribute its stories.
"It's not over,"Shah says."That is something that I'm very proud of:I've built something
that's going to keep going."
24.What kind of content does Meet Cute seek to produce?
A.Long and weighty.
B.Classic and formal.
C.Accurate and select.
D.Timely and relatable.
25.Which of the following best describes Shah's career path?
A.A preset track.
B.A tough climb.
C.A cross-field leap.
D.A comfort-zone choice.
26.What does Shah highlight as a desirable feature of Meet Cute?
A.It fits into small time windows.
B.It sticks to rom-com conventions.
C.It supports independent directors.
D.It provides step-by-step instructions.
27.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Rise of Audio Storytelling
B.Mixing Business with Pleasure
C.A STEM Kid's Literary Journey
D.Why We Love Romantic Comedies

"Where's your squeaky ball?Bring me your panda bear!"It's not unusual for dogs to learn
the names of their favorite toys. But some dogs can categorize toys by how they're used during
play, researchers now report. They can even decide what category a new toy should be in,based
on how it's used. And that's without any verbal or physical clues.
The team, led by Claudia Fugazza of Eotvos Lorand University, recruited 11 dogs and their
owners to take part in the new study. Each dog was studied at home.First, owners played games
with their dogs:either“pull”(tug-of-war)or“throw(fetch).”During each game,the
owner repeatedly said the category out loud.Toys were assigned to a category at random. In other
words,a toy's physical traits (did not dictate how it would be used.Game playing
continued until the dogs related each toy to either“pull”or“throw.”
Then, owners and dogs played the same pull or throw game with toys the dogs had not seen
before. This time, the owners did not name the activities out loud.
Next,owners asked their dogs to“bring me a pull'”or“bring me a throw'”from a toy
pile. This tested if the dogs applied the labels based on their play with that toy. These dogs
picked a new toy right most of the time.
Previous animal studies that categorized things by their use relied on lab settings and formal
training."This is the first study exploring this cognitive skill in animals in their natural
environment while making sure the dogs got only social cues(提示),”Fugazza says.
Fugazza says the new study doesn't show that all dogs have this functional-labeling skill.
“But,”she adds,“I wouldn''t exclude that.”Next, researchers may want to explore what other
mental categories these dogs can learn, and what brain activities underlie these abilities.
28.What does the underlined word "dictate"in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Hide.
B.Change.
C.Determine.
D.Contradict.
29.The new-toy games were mainly designed to test dogs'
A.emotional sensitivity
B.transferable abilities
C.problem-solving speed
D.resistance to distractions
30.What distinguishes the new study from earlier ones?
A.It involved new toys.
B.It excluded social cues.
C.It required stricter drills
D.It avoided unnatural settings.
31.What may researchers explore next?
A.How else can dogs sort toys?
B.Which kind of dogs can label toys?
C.Why can some dogs learn toy names?
D.What other cues affect dogs'brain activities?

One morning last month,I decided to try artificial intelligence on a pressing problem:my
inbox.I had hundreds of messages, and though most were junk,a handful were of actual
interest. So I turned to Cora,an app that uses A.I.to protect users from messages that don't
genuinely require a response.During setup,it read my latest e-mails to learn who I am.
Typically, engaging with e-mail involves sorting messages into different layers of
complexity. The shallowest layer includes e-mails you can confidently delete. The next contains
messages that can be satisfied with a simple reply:"Got it!"or "Thanks."The deepest layer
consists of messages that are quick to read but require significant thought.
Consider this e-mail:"Hi Cal!I'm John Doe's brother...I'm working on a new tech
startup...I'd love to grab coffee with you.Any particular days work best?"Before I can respond,
I need to assess the social and practical implications of the request. Is John Doe sufficiently
important to me that I need to do his brother a favor? If I agree, when and where should I
suggest? The task arguably bundles filtering ()decoding,planning and analysis.
The morning after I activated Cora,I logged in with nervousness.Instead of thirty or forty
messages,I found only five requiring my attention.Boring as the moment might seem,I'm not
sure that A.I.has ever made me more excited than I was then.
Cora's decisions seemed pretty good-all but two were indeed deletable (I could read the
wrongly filtered messages directly from the briefing webpage). The app even drafted possible
replies for layer-two messages. What it didn't try to tackle were the layer-three ones
In The Tacit Dimension,Michael Polanyi argued that our decisions depend heavily on
unstated context."...we can know more than we can tell,"he wrote.A.I.is ignorant of this
"tacit knowledge",so it can't reliably figure out whether to say "yes"to that coffee invitation.
Still,A.I.e-mail tools can have a profound impact. Now I'm impatient for what comes
next.
32.What is the author's main purpose in trying Cora?
A.To screen inbox e-mails.
B.To study e-mail patterns.
C.To erase old inbox history.
D.To block unknown senders.
33.What can the“coffee”e-mail be viewed as?
A.A quick-reply note.
B.A delete-level item.
C.A low-priority letter.
D.A layer-three message.
34.How did the author feel after seeing only five e-mails?
A.Bored.
B.Doubtful.
C.Excited.
D.Nervous.
35.What may A.Ie-mail tools struggle with?
A.Judging context.
B.Spotting junk mail.
C.Writing short replies.
D.Classifying messages.

Move House Without the Waste
If you've got a house move coming up, then you'll know that it can be a stressful experience.
With everything going on, reducing the environmental impact of moving may not be high on your
list of priorities. 36. Thankfully, there are a few clever ways to green your move and save
some money.
Firstly, it's always best to declutter(清理) before you even start thinking about packing.
Getting rid of stuff you don't need means you need fewer boxes and fewer packaging materials.
37, saving money and reducing pollution.
Once you've de cluttered, you can move on to the packing stage. Many removal companies
supply their own brand-new boxes at an additional cost.To save resources (and a bit of cash) ,
it's best to foster (培养) a good relationship with local shops. 38.However, you can ask
the staff when the delivery day is and then pop in that day to collect some cardboard boxes before
they are sent to recycling.
39 using suitcases instead of boxes. Ask your friends and family if you can borrow
some. Laundry bags are also an excellent option. You can generally fit a lot in them and they are
much easier to carry than boxes.
And finally, you cant move your goods with cardboard boxes alone. Delicate items need
some form of protection during the move. 40. If you find yourself short on recycled
materials, you can also use clean towels and clothes to wrap breakables in.This is also a clever
space-saving technique!
A.They have a good supply of boxes
B.Yet moving can be quite a wasteful process
C.It may also mean you need a smaller removal truck
D.Moreover, get creative with items you are clearing out
E.Most of them won't store cardboard boxes as it's a fire risk
F.You can keep old newspapers or air-filled packaging beforehand
G.Alternatively, you can get crafty with the items you have around you
