Famous Chinese artist Chang Shana has spent her whole life protecting and spreading the art of Dunhuang.
An exhibition at the National Art Museum of China, called “Blossoms of Dunhuang”, celebrates Chang Shana’s 60-year artistic journey. She fell in love with Dunhuang thanks to her father, Chang Shuhong, who was the pioneer of introducing Dunhuang art.
In 1943, her father, an artist who had won several medals in France, made up his mind to contribute to Dunhuang after reading about the cave art there. The family traveled for a whole month, and in autumn, they finally reached the Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang.
The next year, Chang Shuhong founded Dunhuang Art Institute (研究院), now known as Dunhuang Academy. He gave up a bright future in his art career to focus on the protection and study of Dunhuang’s cultural treasures. But this was not an easy task because the living conditions were extremely difficult. Yet, Chang Shana and her father stayed to continue their mission.
Under the guidance of her father, institute researchers and visiting artists, Chang Shana began creating detailed copies of the murals (壁画). “My father taught me how to sketch the paintings,” she recalls. “I learned a lot about murals and how their styles changed over time. That experience shaped my entire career.”
Later, Chang Shana went to the United States for further study. After returning to China, she turned her focus to decorative and industrial design and taught at Tsinghua University. Over the years, she has completed many important design projects inspired by Dunhuang murals, including the ceiling of the Great Hall of the People. For Chang Shana, Dunhuang is no longer just a place—it has become a vital part of her life and identity.

The French artist Georges Seurat created many paintings in his short lifetime. A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte is one of people’s favorites. People are attracted by his painting for three reasons.
Seurat created this painting in a new style called pointillism (点彩画法), which uses small dots (点) of paint. By putting two colors next to each other, people could see a third color.
This painting is full of details about French life in the 1880s. There are several women wearing nice clothes and carrying parasols (阳伞). One woman is even walking a monkey. Others are enjoying themselves in dancing and singing. Many of the men are dressed up with jackets and hats. And people can see dogs running around and children playing. There are boats on the water. It looks like a perfect summer day.
This painting makes me feel very calm. Even though a park like this could be a noisy place, Seurat makes it feel peaceful. He paints people sitting quietly in the shade (阴凉处). There is a girl smelling flowers. She looks so beautiful. Throughout the painting, people are relaxing on the cool, green grass and enjoying a beautiful day.
Seurat spent two years finishing this beautiful painting. People are thankful that he completed it. It is a very peculiar painting because of Seurat’s use of pointillism, his attention to details and the peaceful feeling he created. In a word, there are so many people who like this painting.

As one of the most celebrated landscape paintings in Chinese art history, A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains holds great cultural value for centuries. Created during the Northern Song Dynasty, this masterpiece was the work of Wang Ximeng, a talented young artist.
The painting is a long scroll (卷轴). It is over 11 meters long and 51.5 centimeters tall. Scrolls are a traditional Chinese art form. What makes this painting special is the colors Wang used. He took natural materials from rocks and mixed them with animal glue (胶水). These colors are so good that they still look bright after almost 900 years, even though the painting is easy to break.
In the painting, you can see the beauty from southern China. There are many mountains with sharp tops. Long rivers connect small villages, wooden bridges and fishing boats. You can also find people—some are farming, some are on boats, some are walking. They show how people lived happily with nature back then. This mix of natural beauty and daily life expresses the ancient Chinese idea of “unity (统一) between man and nature”. This means humans and nature are one and should help each other.
Today, this painting is kept in the Palace Museum in Beijing. Museum workers keep it in a box in good temperature and humidity—too hot, too cold, or too wet would damage the old silk and colors. I think, because it is easy to break, the museum only shows it sometimes, but it still influences many modern artworks.

D.Because he was invited to teach at Dunhuang Academy.
3.What helped shape Chang Shana’s artistic career?
A.Studying in the foreign universities. B.Copying murals under the expert guidance.

1.How old may Wang Ximeng be, when he created A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains?
A.8 B.18 C.48 D.58
2.Why is the masterpiece so special?

3.What does the underlined word in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The museum. B.The idea. C.The painting. D.The unity.
4.Why is the painting only shown sometimes?
A.It is too big to be shown often. B.It is very easy to be broken.
C.It is too special to be enjoyed. D.It is very popular with the public.
5.Which is the best title of the passage?
