What do moviemakers do when they want to know what a black hole looks like? Quick, get me a scientist! Mika McKinnon is a geologist (地质学家) and physicist in Canada. She also works as a scientist adviser to Hollywood. We asked her some questions about her job.
How did you get interested in science?
I watched too much about Star Trek as a kid. I am a huge fan of science fiction. When I asked my mum why the sky was blue, she would make me research it and actually learn the answers. So I learnt that science is something you can study anywhere, anytime.
How did you start working in the movies?
A movie company came to my university looking for a “string theorist” (a kind of atom scientist). I thought they were saying “string theorist” because that was the smartest scientist they could think of. I said, “You don’t need a ‘string theorist’, you need me!” So I went to work.
What do you do at work?
I first worked on the TV show Stargate, in the prop department, which is in charge of anything an actor touches. They would lend me out to people decorating sets and doing special effects, the writers’ room, and anybody who wanted to ask a scientist questions.
Then I worked with a movie company to create story ideas. Most science fiction is about “what if” questions. What if the speed of light were different? What if we had a colony (聚居地) on Mars? What if we could travel to another solar system in the blink of an eye? I realized how useful it was for storytellers to be able to ask all those what-ifs and actually get answers.
Why does it matter to get the science right in a made-up story?
That was one of my first questions too. One of the writers told me that by getting things right when you can, you get everyone to believe in your world and your story. It allows storytellers to have more outrageous plots. I also think real science is often more interesting than fiction. There are so many things in this world that are stranger and more unusual than we imagine. So telling the truth can actually be a way of stretching belief.
24.What made Mika McKinnon interested in science?
A. Working at a university.
B. WatchingStar Trek as a child.
C. Learning about the blue sky in the film.
D. Discussing science problems with friends.
25.Why did Mika McKinnon work with a movie company?
A. To act in some films.
B. To create story ideas.
C. To help decorate rooms.
D. To manage the things actors need.
26.Why is it important to get the science right in a made-up story?
A. Because it gets everyone to believe in the story.
B. Because it makes fans of science fiction moved.
C. Because it helps storytellers to win several awards.
D. Because it lets students become interested in science.
27.Which of the following can best describe Mika McKinnon?
A. Shy and friendly. B. Patient and modest.
C. Caring and humorous. D. Curious and creative.

①Art has different kinds of forms. Have you ever seen a painting made of sugar? Sugar painting is a painting made of sugar. It’s the sugar for us to taste, and the painting for us to admire. The development of the sugar painting art is a long process (过程), and every change in the form of sugar painting reflects the changes in the social life, and it is also a reflection of historical and cultural customs.
②Since the Warring States Period, the ancient people loved sweets and developed methods of producing sugar. In the Tang Dynasty, there was huge development in the technology of sugar making. And sugar, theprecious product once only served to the emperors and princes, also went into people’s homes. With the cultural and economic (经济的) development of the Song and Yuan Dynasties, people became less interested in only tasting sweetness. In the Ming Dynasty, some people added pictures with good luck into the bowl of sugar, and sugar painting appeared.
③Sugar painting is different from normal painting. It needs boiling syrup (熬糖浆) and painting. It seems simple, but it is extremely challenging to make. Sugar painters use syrup as the material, a spoon as the “paintbrush”, and a smooth table as the “paper”. To make syrup, they have to make sugar hot before painting. Since syrup may become hard if it cools, the painters have to produce the work in a very short time. They move the spoon full of syrup up and down, left and right. Soon a sugar painting is done.
④However, it’s a pity that this folk art is dying recently. The sugar painting that used to be rich in shapes has become poorer and poorer because of fewer needs. What’s worse, few people seem to be willing to pass on the art except those aging sugar painters.
⑤ For most people, painting is a kind of art and difficult to understand. However, sugar painting has pulled the art down into people’s daily lives. Through it, we may see the spiritual support of the ancient people across centuries. Now, sugar painting has been listed as an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in China.
28.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A. The method of making sugar paintings.
B. The history of making sugar paintings.

31.Which of the following shows the structure of this passage?

Modern travellers enjoy safe, comfortable transportation from high-speed trains to planes. We also have lots of information to stay updated on our journey. But in history, travel was different. Let’s explore ancient China. What was travelling like back then?
Travel in control
Before the Song dynasty, the country strictly controlled the movement of common people. Commerce (商业) began to appear in the Song dynasty, and the growing wealth led to the rise of an early tourism industry.
However, this golden period ended. Zhu Yuanzhang, the ruler of the Ming dynasty, renewed (重新开始) strict travel control. Movement was still common if it was managed by the country. The government would send soldiers and craftsmen wherever they were needed, and everything was planned before.
After the Ming dynasty, the country allowed more freedom for people to travel on their own.
Danger on the road
Ancient travel was very dangerous. People worried about the many dangers they could face on their journeys.
For example, distances (距离) didn’t often stay the same over time—“Ten li” in one place might be different from “ten li” in another. This could be a big problem. Failing to understand the distance could leave travellers alone in faraway areas with no hotels around. This was very dangerous for single travellers.
Travel guides also warned readers about dangerous roads and areas to avoid. Theft and robbery were also common on the road. In short, it was very dangerous out there.
Ancient Travelogues(旅行日志)
We’re not short of travel records from ancient people. School textbooks often include famous articles like “Eight Records of Excursions in Yongzhou (《永州八记》),”“An Account of the Old Drunkardˈs Pavilion (《醉翁亭记》),” and “Night Tour of Chengtian Temple (《记承天寺夜游》).” All of them come from travels.
Writers paid more attention to sights and feelings instead of detailed travel travelogues. However, these records show their personal interests, giving us a clear look into ancient daily life.
Much like how we take holiday photos today, ancient people added drawings to their travelogues. In the Ming dynasty, Wang Shizhen, an officer, travelled from Taicang to Beijing. He brought a painter who made drawings for each stop. They created 30 to40 paintings that are still kept today. These drawings give us valuable knowledge.
32.When did the early tourism industry start?
A. Before the Song Dynasty. B. In the Song Dynasty.
C. In the Ming Dynasty. D. After the Ming Dynasty.
33.What result did Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang’s rules lead to?
A. Making travel plans was more popular.
B. Tourism industry was further developed.
C. People were allowed to travel by themselves.
D. Movement was strictly managed by the country.
34.What did travel guides advise ancient travellers to do?
A. To fight with thieves and robbers.
B. To carry maps with clear pictures.
C. To avoid travelling with strangers.
D. To stay away from dangerous roads.
35.How did ancient travellers record their journeys?
A. By hiring writers to record travels.
B. By telling others sights and feelings.
C. By writing travelogues and drawing.
D. By collecting drawings for each stop.
36.What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Travel in ancient China
