Have you ever lost yourself in doing something so that you lost track of time? Everything around you—from the ringing of phones to the people passing by—seemed to be away.
Most of us have had this experience at one time or another. This is a mental state called “flow”. When it happens, we completely focus on (关注) the task before us so that nothing else seems to matter. We feel energetic, even excited, about what we are doing.
The idea of flow was introduced and first studied by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. His flow model shows the emotional states which we’re likely to experience when trying to complete a task, depend on the difficulty of the challenge (挑战) and our skill levels. For example, if the task is low challenging and doesn’t require a lot of skills, we’re likely to feel bored towards it. But facing a challenging task without the required skills could easily result in worry. To perform at our best, we need a task with a high difficulty level, and we believe we have well-developed skills to do it. This moves us to a position where we can experience “flow”.
▲ During flow, people can improve performance and get better results, faster. For instance, artists who Csikszentmihalyi interviewed, said that they were highly productive, and that their work was done perfectly “without putting in much effort” in the flow state. Flow can also make people more curious (好奇的) and creative because they have to look for new challenges and information to keep the state. With flow, people have greater levels of happiness and satisfaction in their activities.
Flow often happens during creative activities and sports activities. But flow states aren’t just something experienced, by artists, writers, or sports persons. Flow can happen anytime a person is deeply lost in a task, including during learning activities. Many people want to achieve flow more often in their daily lives. While doing a task, having clear plans, adding something challengeable and giving and receiving feedback (反馈) in time can help achieve flow. It’s more difficult to achieve flow if the focus is disturbed, so it’s necessary that smartphones, TV and other distractions get turned off.
61. When people are in flow, they _________.
A. need to discuss on the phone B. focus on the time often
C. give full attention to their tasks D. notice others passing by
62. According to Csikszentmialyi’s model, which part shows the flow state?
A. B. C. D.
63. Which of the following can be the best topic sentence of Paragraph 4?

64. What does the underlined word “distractions” in the last paragraph mean in Chinese?
A. 让人兴奋的东西 B. 让人分心的东西 C. 让人精神的东西 D. 让人疑惑的东西
65. Who can most probably achieve flow according to the passage?
A. A writer who gets much advice after publishing (出版) a book.
B. An artist who is drawing an apple for his 10-year-old daughter.
C. A chess player who knows what to do before competitions.
D. A student who prefers doing homework while watching TV.

How do you feel when your teacher asks you to work on a group project with other students? Do you like to work together with others or work ___66___?
The Programme for International Student Assessment, or PISA, carried out a survey of students’ ability to work together in groups. They found that students who do well in tests by themselves are also likely to be better ___67___ working with other people.
Students in Japan South Korea, Finland and Canada, where test scores are ___68___, also did well in working together to solve problems. This finding was true for many countries.
But this was not true for every country. Chinese students, who also did well in tests, ___69___ just average collaborative (合作的) skills.
“One reason might be that Chinese parents and teachers focus too much on grades,” said Zhao Zhongxin, former vice president of the Chinese Family Education Association. “Students have a lot of exam pressure and they view school as a place for ___70___.”
“However, collaborative skills are very important for ___71___ students for today’s society,” he added. “___72___, more Chinese educators are realizing the importance of this and are thinking of ways to help students improve this skill.”
Another interesting finding from the PISA survey was that girls tend (趋向于) to be better than boys at working together. They said girls show ___73___ active attitudes (态度) towards relationships, which means they are much ___74___ to communicate with.
PISA also found that the classroom environment tends to enable students to collaborate. In classes where there are a lot of ____75____ that require communication such as class debates, students tend to have better attitudes towards collaborating.

Dear Mrs Wu,
I love video games and I develop my own games. It’s my favourite hobby. My parents were very encouraging at first. The day I started secondary school, they changed their minds. They now suggest that I give up video games altogether because studies should be my priority (优先考虑的事项). What’s more, they don’t even allow me to go out with my friends at night. Every time they do that, I act like I don’t care. But in fact, I am quite angry and upset because they simply have no respect for me and my needs. What can I do?
Sincerely yours,
Jason
Dear Jason,
You must be feeling very stressed these days. I’m glad you wrote to me for help. However, you should keep calm and talk to your parents about the benefits of your hobby. I can see why your parents are against video-gaming—it was seen as a useless pastime (娱乐活动) back in the time when your parents were young. The best idea may be to tell them that it is good training for new tech jobs like being a video game developer or drone photographer. Also, it is a good way to have a rest after a long school day. Try pointing out real-life examples to them to support your idea. Meanwhile, you should also make sure your hobby doesn’t get in the way of your school performance.
As for your parents’ not allowing you to go out with your friends, it may be a good idea to open up to them about your private life. For example, you can get along well with them. This may help them change their minds. Meanwhile, show them you are a responsible person who understands their worries, and will not let them down. If you can do this, I don’t believe they will be so hard on you. Remember, you mustn’t lose your cool, as that would be immature (不成熟的).
Cheers!
Mrs Wu

Have you ever lost yourself in doing something so that you lost track of time? Everything around you—from the ringing of phones to the people passing by—seemed to be away
His flow model shows the emotional states, which we’re likely to experience when trying to complete a task, depend on the difficulty of the challenge (挑战) and our skill levels.

主旨大意题。根据“During flow, people can improve performance and get better results, faster.”可知第四段主要讲的是“心流”带来的益处,因此最能概括这一段内容的句子是选项C“心流状态带来的好处”。故选C。
【64题详解】
词句猜测题。根据“It’s more difficult to achieve flow if the focus is disturbed, so it’s necessary that smartphones, TV and other distractions get turned off.”可知如果注意力被分散,就很难达到心流状态,因此有必要关闭智能手机、电视和其他干扰源;可推测出“distractions”意为“让人分心的东西”。故选B。
【65题详解】
推理判断题。根据“Flow often happens during creative activities and sports activities…Flow can happen anytime a person is deeply lost in a task, including during learning activities…While doing a task, having clear plans, adding something challengeable and giving and receiving feedback (反馈) in time can help achieve flow.”

Cheers!
Mrs Wu

例文:
I believe life in the future will be better. Technology will make our life much easier. For example, smart homes will help us control everything quickly. Robots will also be very helpful. They can do dangerous or boring work for us, like cleaning streets or working in factories, so people will have more free time. However, I worry about the environment.
