Passage 1
When Scrooge awoke, it was very dark. A clock struck (敲响) twelve!
Scrooge suddenly remembered that another Ghost would come at one o’clock. He decided to lie awake until that time. He waited and waited. At last, the clock struck one.
At that moment, a light flashed in the room, and the curtains (床帘) around his bed flew open. Scrooge sat up and found himself face to face with a Ghost.
The Ghost was very strange. It was the height of a child but looked like an old man. It held a large cap under its arm.
“Are you the Ghost that Marley told me about?” asked Scrooge.
“I am!”
“Who are you?” Scrooge continued.
“I am the Ghost of Christmas Past.”
“Why have you come?” asked Scrooge.
“For your welfare (幸福)!” said the Ghost. “Now stand up and walk with me!” When Scrooge saw the Ghost moving towards the window, he was scared. “I’m a mortal (凡人),” said Scrooge. “I’ll fall.” The Ghost laid its hand on Scrooge’s heart and said. “You won’t fall!” As the words were spoken, they passed through the wall and stood on a country road. There was no mist or darkness. It was a clear and cold winter day, with snow on the ground.
“Good Heavens!” said Scrooge. “I grew up here. I was a boy here!”
They walked along the road. Scrooge recognized (认出) every tree and every gate. Some boys were riding on ponies (小马). All these boys were happy and shouting to each other.
Scrooge knew all the boys. He asked himself, “Why am I so happy to see them? Why am I happy when they say Merry Christmas to each other?” Then they came to a school. A boy was reading a book in one classroom. Scrooge sat down on a bench and wept (抽泣) when he saw himself. He said, “There was a boy singing a Christmas carol at my door last night. I wish I could have given him some money.” The Ghost smiled thoughtfully and said, “Let’s see another Christmas!”

Passage 2
Life was very different at Scott’s home. Scott lived with his father, a judge (法官), his mother, and his sister. There were other animals as well, such as cats and chickens. White Fang had to learn that the other people in the house were friends and that he must not attack the chickens or cats.
One day, he killed fifty of the birds. Scott was angry with White Fang. He did not beat him badly, but he pushed his head at the dead birds and hit White Fang at the same time. This way, White Fang knew he had done wrong.
“The animal is a wolf,” Scott’s father said. “You’ll never teach him not to kill chickens.”
“He won’t attack another chicken,” Scott said. “Will you make a bet with me?”
The judge agreed, and the two men had a bet.
“I’ll lock White Fang in the chicken house,” Scott said. “He can stay there all night. In the morning, not one chicken will be dead.”
And this was what happened. White Fang behaved as if there were no chickens in the chicken house. He had learned his lesson.
By this time, everyone in Scott’s family liked White Fang. They felt safe with him because he knew them, even though he was not a “house dog.”
After Scott came back home from the Yukon, a dangerous man appeared. His name was Jim Hall, and he had killed many men. He wanted to kill the judge who had sent him to prison. This was Scott’s father.
One night, Jim Hall got into the house and planned to shoot (射击) the judge while he slept. However, White Fang saw the strange man. He knew that this man was not a friend and leapt at him. A fight went on for a long time. Jim Hall shot White Fang several times, but White Fang would not let him go.
The noise woke everyone up. The police came and took Jim Hall back to prison. White Fang’s wounds were very bad, and he was dying. Scott sent for a doctor who looked at White Fang and said, “He has only one chance in a thousand of living.”
The doctor did everything he could for White Fang, but he lost a lot of blood. He had a broken leg, and there were bullet holes in his chest. But as the days passed, White Fang slowly got better. He lived, but he could not fight again. He lived the rest of his life quietly with Scott and his family, a much gentler and much loved wolf-dog.

Passage 3
Captain Nemo took me to the dining room. We sat at a table in the middle of the room and ate a delicious lunch. He told me that all the food came from the sea. “I love the sea,” he said. “It gives me everything that I need. Even my clothes come from the sea. It is a place of perfect peace. There are no governments, no taxes, and no wars. Here, I am truly free! I will never return to the land.” He took me to see the library which had thousands of books in many languages. Then he showed me the art gallery. It had many paintings by famous artists. The next room was a museum with all kinds of treasures from the sea. I had never seen such a good museum.
Captain Nemo was very proud of his collection and very proud of the Nautilus (鹦鹉螺号). He told me that he had discovered a way to make electricity (电) using salt and mercury (水银). This electricity gave the Nautilus all the power it needed to move through the water. Huge pumps filled and emptied tanks of air and water to make the Nautilus sink or rise.
After we got to the engine room, Captain Nemo showed me the engine and explained how it worked. The Nautilus was seventy meters long and eight meters wide. It had a cylindrical (圆柱形的) shape with points on each end and weighed 1,500 tons. “It’s a wonderful ship!” I exclaimed (惊叫). “I love it as if it were my child,” he replied.
“How did you build it in secret?” I asked. “All the parts were made in different countries. I used different names each time I placed an order. I took all the parts to a desert island, and my workmen put them together. Then, we burned our workshops.” “It must have cost a fortune!(大笔的钱)” I exclaimed.

Mr Frank: Good morning, sir. Please sit down and have a drink.
Lestrade: Good morning, Mr Frank. Thank you. So tell me about your case.
Mr Frank: Well, I live alone. My father passed away last week, and he left me a famous painting. I locked it in the safe in the living-room yesterday. When I got up this morning, however, the safe was open and the painting wasn’t there!
Lestrade: I see a necklace near the open safe. Does anyone know about the painting?
Mr Frank: I showed it to only two people—Zoe and Jimmy. They both work in my house. Oh, the necklace belongs to Zoe. I saw her wear it last week.
Lestrade: I see. Outside the open window, there’s a lot of mud on the wet ground. Inside the room, the floor was completely clean. Can I see Zoe and Jimmy, please?
Mr Frank: Sure. Come with me, sir.

Garden behind Mr Frank’s house. The garden, full of roses.

Zoe: [Rushing to Lestrade.] Oh no, sir! It’s not me! I didn’t steal the painting. Believe me!

Zoe: I went to sleep after I did all the cleaning and washing in the house.
Lestrade: Is this your necklace, Madam? [Showing the necklace.] I found it near the open safe.
Zoe: Why, yes! It’s mine! I lost it three days ago. It was cheap, so I didn’t tell anyone. Sir, believe me!
[Starting to cry.]
Lestrade: Madam, I never jump to conclusions. I need proof. What about you, Jimmy?
Jimmy: I was on guard the whole night. It was raining and I didn’t see anything unusual.

Passage 8
Late on a rainy Saturday evening, the City Museum reported a theft: a valuable 19th-century oil painting named Twilight by the Lake had disappeared from its exhibition hall. The painting was put in a glass case with a high-tech lock, and only three staff members and one special visitor could get into the hall that day.
Detective Clara Voss got to the scene at once. She noticed that the glass case was fine—no scratches or cracks—and there were no signs that someone had tried to break the lock open. The security camera in the hall had been turned off at 7: 15 p. m., just 45 minutes before people found the painting was lost. The museum’s security system noted that the last person to enter the hall before the camera stopped working was Dr. Elena Marek, the curator who was good at 19th-century art.
The three suspects were asked to answer questions:
1. Dr. Elena Marek: She said she had checked the painting at 6: 30 p. m. to get ready for the next day’s exhibition. “I left the hall at 6: 45 p.m. to go to a meeting with the museum director” she told the detective. She showed her notebook with detailed notes about the painting’s condition, but there were light blue ink marks on her hands.
2. Jake Torres: The museum’s electrician He said he was repairing the lights near the exhibition hall around 7 p. m. “I didn’t go into the hall—I only fixed the ceiling lights outside,” he explained. His toolbox had wires, a screwdriver and a small can of oil, but no one could prove where he was at that time.
3. Ms. Lila Chen: A visiting art expert who had asked for special permission to study the painting. She said she spent 30 minutes watching the painting from 5: 30 p.m. “I left the museum at 6 p.m because the rain became heavier,” she said. She showed a photo of the painting she took but the photo showed the painting’s frame was a little tilted—different from how it looked in the morning’s security video.
Detective Voss checked everything carefully. She found that the high-tech lock needed a special access code and a fingerprint scan to open. Only Dr. Marek and the museum director had both, but the director was at a meeting in another city that day. She also found that the blue ink on Dr. Marek’s hands was the same as the ink used on the labels at the back of museum paintings. When she checked the storage room, she saw a roll of new labels with its first sheet missing—and the sheet was later found hidden in Jake’s toolbox.
“Let’s put all the clues together ” Detective Voss said “Dr. Marek, you didn’t go to the meeting at 6:45 p.m.—you stayed in the hall and copied the access code with the blue ink labels. Then you asked Jake to turn off the security camera by saying there was something wrong with the lights. Jake, you used the oil in your toolbox to make the lock easy to open quietly, and you stole the painting while Dr. Marek drew the front desk staff’s attention away. Ms. Chen’s photo proved the painting had already been moved before she left, which was just the time you planned the crime.
Dr. Marek and Jake admitted their crime. They had planned to sell the painting secretly to make money, thinking the heavy rain and the turned-off camera would help them hide what they did. But the blue ink marks and the missing label sheet made their crime known to everyone.
29.Why did Detective Voss not believe Dr. Marek’s words about her meeting?
A.There were no meeting notes in her notebook.
B.The museum director said there was no such meeting.
C.Her hands had blue ink marks matching the museum’s labels.
D.She could not explain why the frame was tilted in Ms. Chen’s photo.
30.How did Ms. Chen’s photo help Detective Voss solve the case?
A.It recorded the exact time when the two thieves stole the painting.
B.It clearly showed the appearance of the two thieves in the exhibition hall.
C.It told the detective that Ms. Chen had worked with the two thieves secretly.
D.It showed the painting’s frame was tilted, proving the painting had been moved early.
31.Which is the correct order of the events of the theft?
a. Jake Torres turned off the security camera of the exhibition hall.
b. Jake used oil to open the lock quietly and took the painting away.
c. Dr. Marek and Jake Torres planned to sell the stolen painting secretly for money.
d. Dr. Marek copied the access code of the painting’s glass case with blue ink labels.
e. The valuable painting Twilight by the Lake was found missing from the City Museum.
A.c-d-b-a-e B.c-d-a-b-e C.e-c-d-a-b D.e-c-b-a-d
32.What might be the reason that the two thieves chose Saturday evening to steal the painting?
A.They could ask Ms. Chen to help them move the painting without being found.
B.The museum was crowded with visitors and it was easy to hide themselves in the crowd.
C.The director was in another city and could take charge of the museum’s security work on time.
D.The heavy rain and the turned-off security camera could help them cover their tracks and avoid being caught.
Passage 9
Horace was walking through the music store with his mother. She wanted him to join the school band and play an instrument. As they passed the flute and trumpet (长笛和小号) section, Horace frowned. He didn’t like their high, bright sounds. He also worried that joining the band might make other kids think he was a “band geek” and not cool.
Then he saw the electric guitars. That’s more like it, he thought. A guitar looked cool and strong, not soft like a violin. Excited, he picked one up, put the strap over his shoulder, and tried to play a chord. But when he strummed the strings, all that came out was a messy, twanging (刺耳的) noise. He had no idea what he was doing. His excitement disappeared, replaced by embarrassment. “I’m awful at this,” he muttered, putting the guitar down.
His mother, trying not to show her disappointment, gently led him to the last section of the store. There, an old man was sitting on a stool, playing a large, wooden instrument—a cello (大提琴). The man moved a long bow across the strings, and a deep, rich, beautiful sound filled the air. Horace stopped. The melody was sad but beautiful, and it felt completely different from the sharp sounds of the flutes or the noisy guitar.
The old man saw Horace watching and smiled. He showed Horace how to hold the cello and how to pull the bow gently across one string. With a little help, Horace managed to produce a single clear, vibrating (振动的) note. It wasn’t a messy noise, it was a real musical sound. A feeling of surprise and happiness washed over him, “Mom,” he said, looking up with shining eyes, “This is it. I want to learn this. (Picture ________★________)”
His mother agreed happily. For the next hour, while she talked to the store clerk about prices and lessons, Horace didn’t listen. He just watched the old man play and tried to make a few more notes himself. He had found his instrument not by looking for what seemed cool, but by listening for what truly spoke to him.
33.What does Horace mean when he thinks, “That’s more like it,” about the electric guitar?

Passage 10
As young people, many of us dream of becoming “somebody” when we grow up. However, without enough courage or support, we often feel far away from this imagined goal. At times, strange thoughts come into our minds: Should we just give up and “lie flat” instead?
Not the little piggy and his three friends from the animated (动画的) movie Nobody (无名之辈).
This past summer, their story made people laugh and encouraged tens of millions of moviegoers across China. The four little, nameless monsters (妖怪) dress up as characters from the famous film Journey to the West. They leave Langlang Mountain and set out on their own pilgrimage (朝圣之旅). Along the way, many other monsters laugh at their dreams. But the little pig and his friends don’t give up. They keep fighting “bad guys”, trying to live their own life.
Some say that Nobody is not just a movie, rather, it’s more like a mirror. In real life, many common people also choose to hold on to their dreams, even though they face great difficulties. One of them is Pang Zhongwang, now a star student graduating from Tsinghua University. Twenty-six years ago, however, he was born a poor “nobody” in a countryside of Hebei. His late (已故的) mother had a disability and couldn’t work. His father had a serious mental(精神) illness. Even though there were all these challenges, Pang, under his mother’s influence, grew up strong and happy. He started to take on family duties when he was very young. And deep in his heart, this “nobody” also dreamed of becoming “somebody”. He always achieved excellent grades in school through hard work. In 2017, he caught national attention by scoring an impressive 684 out of 750 in the gaokao.
Pang was luckier than the four monsters in Nobody. He was much closer to his dream of becoming “somebody”. The piggy and his friends, however, fail in their pilgrimage. But their courage is now remembered by many. In a way, they have grown to become “somebodies”, too.
Now, what do you want to do with your big dreams? Clearly, if you “lie flat”, you’ll remain a “nobody”. We wish you good luck as you try to break out of your own “Langlang Mountain”!
37.What do the four little monsters do when other monsters laugh at their dreams?
A.They give up and lie flat. B.They try to live their own life.
C.They feel sad about it. D.They are discouraged by the laughs.
38.How does the writer explain Nobody is more like a mirror in real life?
A.By giving an example of Pang B.By drawing a picture of a mirror
C.By listing numbers D.By introducing a film
39.Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?
A.The four monsters in Nobody will surely achieve their dream of becoming famous.
B.Pang Zhongwang’s mother’s illness had no influence on his growth.
C.“Lie flat” will prevent one from realizing their big dreams.
D.All common people who hold on to their dreams can become “somebody” easily.
40.What challenges made Pang Zhongwang just a poor “nobody”?
① He was born in a poor countryside. ② He worked hard to take on his family duties.
③ His mother had a disability and couldn’t work. ④ He achieved high grades in school.
⑤ His father had a serious mental illness
A.①②③ B.①③⑤ C.②③④ D.②④⑤
41.What does the underlined phrase “Langlang Mountain” refer to (指代)?
A.The mountain in the film Nobody. B.The four little monsters.
C.The success that we achieved finally. D.The difficulties that stop us being “somebody”.

“Millions of dollars,” he replied. “However, I have billions!”

Passage 6
Molly is having a sleepover (留宿聚会) with her best friends, Sabbir and Jason.
Molly’s Mum: Okay, time to get to sleep everyone. I’ll turn out the lights, goodnight.
Molly’s mum turns off the lights and closes the bedroom door. The children climb into their sleeping bags.
Molly: (yawning) Night everyone.
Jason: Oh, come on, we’re not just going to sleep, are we? Don’t be so boring!
Molly: Okay, okay... fine. What were you planning? Jason flicks on a torch (手电筒) and holds it beneath his face.
Jason: (In a silly voice) Something spooooooky.
Molly: Good luck trying to scare me! What “spoooooooky” thing are you going to do?
Jason: I’m going to tell you a ghost story.
Sabbir: Only if you promise it won’t be too scary! I do want to sleep at some point tonight.
Jason: I can’t make any promises (He clears his throat dramatically). Once upon a time, there lived a boy named Jack.
Molly: (whispering to Sabbir) Boring! This sounds like a fairy story, not a ghost story.
Jason: Shhh. Now Jack was not an ordinary boy. He was a GHOST! Jack haunted a house where a little girl named Molly lived with her mum.
Sabbir: You’re describing this house!
Jason: Every night, Jack would walk through the house. He deliberately knocked things over and made loud noises, because he was a very naughty ghost (whispering). If you listen carefully, you might even hear him. There is a loud crashing sound. The children scream.
Sabbir: (clutching his teddy bear) What was that?
Molly: How did you do that, Jason?
Jason: I don’t know. I didn’t do anything, I promise! I was just making up a silly story to scare you. I don’t know what that crashing sound was.
Sabbir: Jack must be real. What are we going to do? Suddenly, the bedroom door opens, Molly’s mum comes in and turns on the lights.
Molly’s mum: Is everything okay? Sorry for all the noise. I dropped a plate when I was doing the washing up. I hope it didn’t scare you.

Passage 7
Scene 1
Living room in Mr Frank’s house.
Mr Frank is sitting on the sofa, looking sad. Lestrade enters.
Scene 2
Garden behind Mr Frank’s house. The garden, full of roses.
Mr Frank is sitting under a large tree. Lestrade is walking around slowly. The sound of quick footsteps is heard.
Zoe: [Rushing to Lestrade.] Oh no, sir! It’s not me! I didn’t steal the painting. Believe me!
Lestrade: Calm down, Madam. Tell me what you did last night.
Lestrade: OK. You two can leave now. [Turning to Mr Frank.] I know who the thief is.
Mr Frank: [With eyes and mouth wide open] You do? Who is it?
Lestrade: You, sir!
Mr Frank: Me? You mean I stole my own painting? Are you joking?
Lestrade: I’m serious, Mr Frank. The mud outside and the clean floor inside told me that probably no thief broke into your house. Before I came here, I had checked with the insurance company. They told me you had bought insurance for the painting. They would pay you 200,000 dollars if the painting was stolen.
Mr Frank: What about the necklace, then?
Lestrade: You stole it as well. You tried to make sure that Zoe would go to prison instead of you. Mr Frank, I like being a detective. My dream is to find the real criminal and protect the person who hasn’t done anything wrong.
25.What made Lestrade first doubt Mr Frank?

【答案】29.C 30.D 31.B 32.D
【解析】29.细节理解题。根据“She found that the high-tech lock needed a special access code and a fingerprint scan to open. Only Dr. Marek and the museum director had both, but the director was at a meeting in another city that day. She also found that the blue ink on Dr. Marek’s hands was the same as the ink used on the labels at the back of museum paintings.”
根据“She showed a photo of the painting she took but the photo showed the painting s frame was a little tilted—different from how it looked in the morning’s security video.”以及“Ms. Chen’s photo proved the painting had already been moved before she left, which was just the time you planned the crime”可知,陈女士的照片显示画框有点倾斜,与早上安全视频里的样子不同,这证明在她离开前画已经被移动过了,这帮助侦探沃斯确定了画被盗的时间更早。故选D。
31.细节理解题。根据“Dr. Marek and Jake admitted their crime. They had planned to sell the painting secretly to make money”、“Dr Marek, you didn’t go to the meeting at 6:45 p.m.—you stayed in the hall and copied the access code with the blue ink labels.”、“Then you asked Jake to turn off the security camera by saying there was something wrong with the lights.”、“Jake, you used the oil in your toolbox to make the lock easy to open quietly, and you stole the painting”以及“The valuable 19th-century oil painting named Twilight by the Lake had disappeared from its exhibition hall.”
根据“They had planned to sell the painting secretly to make money, thinking the heavy rain and the turned-off security camera would help them hide what they did.”
A.It is what the school band needs. B.It is the instrument his mother likes most.

根据“He had found his instrument not by looking for what seemed cool, but by listening for what truly spoke to him.”可知,故事告诉我们要选择真正触动内心的事物,故选D。
