However, his mother replied, “Come on, he’s just a kid.” I turned around so as to see the other people’s faces. They also seemed unhappy, but no one did anything. Will they think me a fool (傻子) if I do something? I looked at the signs on the wall. They read “Please be quiet”, “No smelly food” and “Please look after your children”. Humans continued walking across the world for the next 94,000 years, until about 6,000 years ago when a number of important changes took place. Like in the Central Asian country of Kazakhstan, people started to ride horses. Although this meant that people could travel further and faster, transporting (运输) large amounts of goods was still a difficult job, often relying on simple sledges or human strength. That all changed, however, a few hundred years later with the invention of the wheel. Who first invented the wheel? We will never know for sure, but the inventors probably first used wheels to make pottery. Later, they realized that they could also use them to transport people and things. They soon connected (连接) wheels to horse-pulled vehicles, creating carts and chariots. Farmers were suddenly able to transport their goods to markets far away. This invention greatly increased national and international trade, connecting distant communities for the first time. The wheel changed the way villages, towns and even countries did business with each other, but it wasn’t perfect. The roads were old walking paths. These old paths quickly became very difficult to use in wet weather, turning muddy and impassable. As a result, the first roads made of stone appeared after the arrival of the wheel. The Romans then invented new road-building techniques, building strong, straight highways across their country. The new roads were very good, and we still use some of them today. The wheel not only changed the way humans move, but it also allowed us to build all types of amazing machines. Windmills, clocks and other machines all use wheels, and the Industrial Revolution depended heavily on the wheel. Even in our digitalized world, we still use wheels in devices such as 3D printers, robotics, and space exploration vehicles. Without doubt, the wheel is one of the most important and enduring inventions of all time. 27. What was probably the earliest use of the wheel? A. It was used for national trade. B. It was used to transport goods. C. It was used for building roads. D. It was used to make pottery. 28. What does the word “impassable” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean? A. Impossible to build. B. Improbable to work on. C. Impossible to cross. D. Improbable to arrive at. 29. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage? A. To describe how wheels changed machine design. B. To introduce the influence and importance of the wheel. C. To compare transport tools before and after the wheel. D. To explain how the wheel was invented by ancient people. 【答案】27. D 28. C 29. B 【解析】 【导语】本文主要讲述了轮子的发明历程、早期用途,以及轮子对人类交通、贸易、道路建设和机器发展的深远影响与重要意义。 【27题详解】 细节理解题。根据“We will never know for sure, but the inventors probably first used wheels to make pottery.”可知,轮子最早的用途可能是制作陶器。故选D。 【28题详解】 词句猜测题。根据“These old paths quickly became very difficult to use in wet weather, turning muddy and impassable.” B。 D Your memory plays an important role in your daily life. It helps you remember who you are where you live, what you have learnt at school, and what you plan to do in the future. In fact, whenever you recognize a friend’s face, recall a lesson, or even find your way home, you are using your memory. So, how can you improve your memory? First, it is helpful to live a mentally (脑力上) active life. Make a point of trying new activities. For example, you will exercise your brain if you learn to play a new instrument, start learning a foreign language, or even try a new sport. You can also improve your memory with brain games, such as crosswords, word games and maths puzzles. Techniques like memory linking (联想记忆法) also work your brain and improve your memory. In memory linking, you make mental connections to help you remember them. For example, you can make up a story to link items in a list so that you will remember them. You will be exercising your brain as well as improving your memory! Second, a healthy body supports a healthy memory. If you live a healthy life, your memory will work better. Healthy eating habits are especially important. Research shows that eating green vegetables, nuts, berries, and oily fish can improve your ability to remember things. Try to have balanced meals every day. What’s more, regular physical exercise, like running or playing ball games, helps your brain stay active. Also, do not forget to get enough sleep every night. While you sleep, your brain organizes what you have learnt during the day. Last but not least, it is important to get plenty of rest and manage stress. Unless you take time to relax, your brain will find it hard to remember things. If you feel too stressed or worried, your memory may become less sharp. Try listening to music, reading a book, or talking with friends when you need to relax. Remember, everyone forgets things sometimes, and it’s normal for memory to change a little as people grow older. However, you can maintain and even improve your memory if you exercise your brain, live a healthy life and make time to relax! By following these steps, you can build a better memory— and make your daily life easier and happier. 30. According to the passage, which is a good way to improve your memory? A. Staying up late to learn new things. B. Trying the same daily activities to relax. C. Doing brain games like crosswords regularly. D. Spending most of your time listening to music. 31. According to the passage, what is the main purpose of Paragraph 3? A. To list ways to exercise the brain. B. To introduce how to learn a language. C. To explain how memory linking works. D. To show why learning new skills is helpful. 32. What can we learn from the passage? A. A lot of stress helps people’s memory clearer. B. Sleep helps the brain organize what we learn. C. Some foods can stop memory changes with age. D. Relaxing is more important than food for memory. 33. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. Ways to Build a Better Memory B. Ways to Stop Memory from Failing C. Does Brain Activity Help Memory? D. Can a Healthy Life Improve Your Memory? 【答案】30. C 31. A 32. B 33. Make a point of trying new activities.”及后文列举的学习新技能、做脑力游戏、联想记忆法等内容可知,第三段主要列举了锻炼大脑的方法。故选A。 【32题详解】 细节理解题。根据“Also, do not forget to get enough sleep every night. While you sleep, your brain organizes what you have learnt during the day.” 故选A。 第二部分 本部分共5题,共20分。根据题目要求,完成相应任务。 四、阅读表达(第34-36题,每题2分,第37题4分,共10分) 阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题 Life without smartphones Do you have a smartphone? How well do you think you’d cope if someone took it from you for three weeks? That was the challenge that 26 pupils at a school in Colchester, England, recently faced. It was part of an experiment; its purpose was to find out how living without a phone would affect them The 26 pupils were all Year 8 at the Stanway School in Essex. They agreed to lock their phones in a glass box for three weeks. Researchers from the University of York closely monitored (跟踪调查) them to see if their behaviour changed over this time. The experiment was filmed for a documentary TV show and the adult presenters joined the pupils by also giving up their phones. Although similar experiments have been carried out before, Professor Lisa from the University of York said this one involved people spending a much longer time without their smartphones. At the end of the experiment, the researchers found that the pupils had experienced several benefits (好处). On average, they went to bed 50 minutes earlier when they couldn’t use their phones and fell asleep 20 minutes faster. This meant they got more rest, which is important for mood, concentration and physical health. The pupils reported feeling less worried, less sad, and closer to other people. They spent more time with their families, and teachers said the pupils were more alert (头脑清醒的) in class. The research showed only a small increase in working memory and there was no increase in continued focus. However, the researchers suggested that three weeks might not be long enough to see any clear changes in these areas. Overall, the study showed that a smartphone ban for pupils under the age of 14 could have a positive effect on sleep and mood. 34. What was the purpose of the experiment? __________________________________________________ 35. Where were the pupils’ phones locked? __________________________________________________ 36. How much earlier did the pupils go to bed without their phones? __________________________________________________ 37. Would you support a ‘no-phone’ experiment in your school? Why or why not? Here are the results of my survey. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 I asked forty students in my class about what they often do while traveling for our English research study. Here are the results of my survey. According to the chart, trying local food is the most popular activity, with 16 students choosing it. Visiting museums is also popular, selected by 8 students. Going shopping and other activities are chosen by 11 and 5 students respectively. From the data, I find that food experience attracts the most interest, while activities like visiting museums, which are more about culture, receive less attention. I sat down and took out my book. Suddenly, a girl opposite me started playing loud music on her phone. What a shock! I almost jumped up in surprise. A minute later, the man next to me took out several packets of food. It was like he was on a picnic. People have to eat, of course, but the food was so smelly! It was like sitting next to a mountain of blue cheese. I covered my ears in order to block the noise coming from Rock Girl. I covered my nose so as to reduce (减少) the smell coming from Mr Smelly Food. Then a boy behind me started to kick my seat. My anger grew. My face turned as red as a tomato! I asked him to stop. Everyone knows the rules, I thought. They aren’t just on the wall but also in our minds and hearts. And rules are there for us to follow! Suddenly, I felt brave. I took a deep breath, stood up and cleared my throat… 24. Where did the story happen? A. On a bus. B. On a train. C. In a cafe. D. In a library. 25. The other people’s unhappy faces. C. His worry about being seen as a fool. D. The signs reminding people of the rules. C The wonder of the wheel When the first humans decided to leave their homes over 100,000 years ago in search of new places to live and better sources of food, they did it on foot. C It was used for building roads. D Your memory plays an important role in your daily life. It helps you remember who you are, where you live, what you have learnt at school, and what you plan to do in the future. D. At the end of the experiment the researchers found that the pupils had experienced several benefits (好处). However the researchers suggested that three weeks might not be long enough to see any clear changes in these areas. Overall, the study showed that a smartphone ban for pupils under the age of 14 could have a positive effect on sleep and mood. 34. What was the purpose of the experiment? __________________________________________________ 35. Where were the pupils’ phones locked? __________________________________________________ 36. How much earlier did the pupils go to bed without their phones? __________________________________________________ 37. Would you support a ‘no-phone’ experiment in your school? Why or why not?
