Tom: My mom writes children’s books. I loved it when she read to me, but I wished she’d play more instead of sitting at the computer writing. Then one day at school, we had to talk about a book, and I chose one of hers. My classmates were really amazed. Suddenly, my mom’s job seemed really cool! Anna: My dad works at a radio station but I didn’t know what he did until he took me to work one day. I saw the studio with all its equipment (设备), got to wear headphones and speak into a microphone. It was a lot of fun. I thought this kind of job was very interesting. Bill: As a child, I had no idea what my mom did. I just knew she left early and came back late. “Financial analyst (金融分析师)” meant nothing to me. In nursery school, when we drew “My Mom at Work”, other kids drew nurses, teachers, or moms cooking at home. I thought those jobs were much more interesting. I just drew a fat woman in a suit with big earrings and a laptop. Diane: Being a biologist’s daughter was fun. I liked bird-watching with my mom. I knew a biologist was someone who knew about animals, and I thought it meant not working too hard. My dad is a doctor—always at the hospital, all day and sometimes all night—while my mom often just sat at her desk writing something. So by age five, I’d decided it was better to be a biologist than a doctor. 1. Why did Tom think his mom’s job became “really cool”? A. Because she took him to her workplace. B. Because she started reading more stories to him. C. Because she finally played with him instead of writing. D. Because his classmates were amazed when he talked about her book. 2. Whose parent has a job that requires her/him to work at night sometimes? A. Anna’s father. B. Diane’s father. C. Tom’s mother. D. Bill’s mother. 3. Where is this passage most likely taken from? A. A science textbook. B. A novel about family life. C. A job advertisement. D. A collection of online sharing. B All around the world, buildings are going green! People are making green buildings. What does it mean to go green or to make a green building? A green building is designed in a way that is friendly to the environment. The building uses energy, water, and other materials in ways that are good for the environment. When planning green buildings, architectural designers must think about how to use energy, water, and materials in an environment-friendly way. There are many ways to save energy. They can design buildings to use natural light. Buildings can also be made with wind or solar (太阳能的) power to get energy from the sun or the wind. To save water, green buildings can have areas on the roofs (屋顶) to collect rainwater. Bathrooms can have toilets that use less water. As for the materials used to build the building, it is important to use materials that are good for the air or water. Recycled (回收的) materials can also be used for buildings. Buildings around the world use all three of these ways to go green. An office building called CH2 in Melbourne, Australia, uses wind and solar power. A cultural center in London, England, is made from recycled train cars and is powered by solar and wind power. The Academy of Sciences building in California in the U. S. has recycled materials, solar energy, and a huge “living roof” of plants. A temple in Thailand is made from 1.5 million recycled glass bottles! This is a good use of recycled materials, and it also lets natural light into the temple. More and more green buildings are being built and they are making the world a better place! 4. What is a green building like? A. It is always painted green. B. It is designed in a cheap way. C. It is usually built in green natural areas. D. It is made in an environment-friendly way. 5. How can a green building save energy? ①By using natural light. ②By using solar or wind power. ③By planting trees around. ④By collecting rainwater on roofs. A. ①② B. ①③ C. ②④ D. ③④ 6. What is special about the temple in Thailand mentioned in the passage? A. It has a “living roof” of plants. B. It is powered only by solar energy. C. It is built using recycled glass bottles. D. It uses train cars as building materials. 7. What is the writer’s main purpose of this passage? A. To encourage readers to build their own green homes. B. To compare different green buildings around the world. C. To explain what green buildings are and give examples. D. To tell people how to support and care about green buildings. C My dad was very crazy about Gaelic football. He would go to every game within a hundred miles. Though with no interest, I went too, with our long-eared dog Rebel, for I did love visiting all these strange towns. “Keep him on a leash (牵引绳).” my father warned. “If he runs off, you will never see him again!” Well, that was exactly what happened. I remember we arrived late at the town of Portumna, forty miles away. My father gave me some money and told me to meet him at the gate after the game. But as I was getting out of our car, Rebel jumped out, running and barking (吠叫) after the crowd. Free from its leash, Rebel ran quickly. The faster I ran, the faster he ran, and soon he was running along the banks of a river chasing hens. I watched him disappearing into the tall grass and spent the next few hours running around in the mud and calling his name. I ran so far that I got lost myself. Finally, a farmer found me and took me to the police station. When my father saw me, he was very angry. “ ▲ ” But I was too heartbroken to care. All I could think was Rebel. Keep your dog on a leash, especially when they are in a strange place. I was never worried that Rebel would attack (攻击) anyone, but the people he was barking at didn’t know that, did they? I’m sure he scared a few people. Dogs may be our best friends, but sometimes they might not understand strangers and then may attack them. This is especially important if you have a dog in the city. Luckily, my story had the best ending ever. One week later, Rebel showed up on our doorstep, hungry and covered in mud. 8. What was the writer’s own interest in going with his father? A. Watching the Gaelic football games. B. Going around some strange towns. C. Loving to run and play with his dog. D. Getting some money from his father. 9. What happened right after the writer got out of the car at Portumna? A. The writer soon got lost in the town. B. Rebel directly ran to play with hens. C. Rebel jumped out and ran to the crowd. D. The writer’s father gave him some money. 10. Which is the right sentence for the blank “ ▲ ”? A. What did I tell you? B. How did you find Rebel? C. When did you see the farmer? D. Where did I watch the game? 11. What does the writer really mean by saying “Keep your dog on a leash” in Paragraph 4? A. Dogs are ready to attack strangers. B. Even friendly dogs may cause danger. C. Stay together when out with your dog. D. Dogs might feel scared in strange places. D Fashions (时尚) come and go, so you should wear what makes you happy. In fact, the idea of feeling good by what we wear has a name- dopamine (多巴胺) dressing. It comes from the book Dress Your Best Life written by Dawnn Karen, which talks about looking for joy through dressing. Dopamine is the feel- good chemical (化学物质) that our bodies make. For example, when we eat delicious food or listen to our favorite music, our brain releases more of it. This chemical then travels to different parts of the brain to make us feel happy. Similarly, dopamine can be released by doing other things. “What about wearing something crazy or bright?” says Karen. In 2020, Karen started looking for ways to improve dopamine levels. She then created “dopamine dressing” which quickly became popular. The dopamine dressing style is the most energetic. Fashion stars often share their dopamine dressing with others. They challenge their creativity to add more colors to their wardrobes (衣柜). Of course, it’s impossible for us to choose exactly which color we should wear to improve our feelings. And dopamine dressing doesn’t suggest that we should all wear bright colors to feel happier. For some people, wearing black might bring more happiness than wearing bright colors. Different people have different feelings about colors. It’s all about how you feel about a color. “Add more of your favorite colors to your wardrobe. Think about the colors that make you think of a happier time, a place or a person.” says Shakaila Forbes- Bell, a fashion expert. All in all, if you’re looking to get feelings of happiness through your clothing, you don’t need to turn to a certain color. Which colors have you always loved? Just go for them. 12. What can we know about Dawnn Karen? A. She wrote the book Dress Your Best Life. B. She designed many enjoyable clothes. C. She shared her dopamine dressing online. D. She discovered the chemical dopamine. 13. Which dictionary meaning best explains the underlined word releases in Para. 2? release v. (releases, released, releasing) ① to stop holding sth. ② to let sth. come out of a place ③ to take away stress or worry ④ to make information open to the public A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④ 14. What can make us happy according to the last two paragraphs? A. Wearing bright colors. B. Wearing certain clothes. C. Wearing our favorite colors. D. Wearing fashionable clothes. 15. What can be the best title of the passage? A. The Power of Dopamine Dressing B. Why Should We All Wear More Colors? C. Dopamine Dressing Changes Our Life D.
