Can you imagine spending nearly two-thirds of a year living and working in the desert (沙漠)? That’s what Zhong Lin does.
Zhong grew up in Minqin, Gansu. When he was a child, sandstorms turned the sky dark in spring. He remembers that the elders (长辈) tried their best to protect the ecosystem. Seeing the elders’ perseverance (坚持不懈), Zhong started planting trees in 2020.
His first try wasn’t easy. Most of the young trees died because he didn’t know how to plant them. But he didn’t give up. Zhong saved money and went back to the desert in early 2022. This time, he studied carefully, learned from experienced planters, and even lived in the desert to take care of the plants. Finally, over 90 percent of his new trees survived (存活)!
Zhong also made videos to show people what he was doing, hoping to get more care and help. In 2024, he organized an event called “Come to Minqin and Plant a Tree.” Over the months, more than 41, 000 people across China joined him. It was 8 a.m. Nine-year-old Deng Zihao put on his school uniform and set off to begin his school day as usual. Deng is studying at Yongxing School on Yongxing Island in Hainan Province. It’s the only school on the island with over 50 students in it. And it is the southernmost school in China.
More than 10 years ago, it was hard for local kids to go to school. To get an education, they had to take an 11-hour boat ride to Hainan Island. But things changed in 2015 when Yongxing School was built. Now, the school offers classes to young kids, from kindergarten (幼儿园) to the third grade. The students here learn the same subjects as those in other parts of China, such as Maths, Chinese, and Science.
However, the life at Yongxing School is special in some ways. The island school offers the students access to rich learning resources (资源). Through a “blue education” programme, ocean scientists visit the school to teach the students about sea animals and plants. Moreover, teachers take the students to a local ocean museum and beaches to help them learn more about the ocean environment (环境). There is also a “green education” programme. Every Wednesday, the students and teachers plant trees and pick up rubbish to protect the island’s environment.
Yongxing School might be small and far, but students can learn more and dream big there. Wherever people live, education is important. The school is helping the island children set sail (启航) for a bright future.

Running is good exercise, but some people often say, “Running is bad for the knees.” They think running will cause arthritis (关节炎), making them walk with difficulty when they get old. But is that true?
Well, the truth is that running isn’t bad for the knees as long as people do it in the right way. In fact, running can keep the knees strong and healthy. A study in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise found out that runners had fewer knee problems than walkers. Why? Running helps build up muscles and cartilage (肌肉和软骨) around the knee joint (关节). Compared with running, walking is easier on the knees. It doesn’t exercise the muscles around the knees or build up the joint the same way running does.
Another study followed marathon (马拉松) runners before and after their races. The result was pretty surprising: the runners’ knee cartilage was stronger after the race, and they had a lower chance of developing arthritis than those who didn’t run at all.
Actually, running itself isn’t bad for our knees, but if we don’t do it right, it can cause problems. Here are the main things to watch out for. First, run with bad form. Taking too big steps or letting knees bend inward (向内弯曲) are both bad for the knees. Second, overuse the knees. Running too much, too fast, or without rest can cause knee problems. Third, run on hard ground. It is bad for the knees, especially if we’ re doing long runs or running very fast.
But don’t worry. To keep our knees healthy while running, we just need to train smart. Small changes in our running habits can make a big difference.
32. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By using a saying.
B. By introducing a sport.
C. By showing an opinion.
D. By sharing an experience.
33. Which question does paragraph 2 answer?
A. How can people run in the right way?
B. When did the researchers do the study?
C. What knee problems do runners often have?
D. Why is running better for the knees than walking?
34. What did the second study show?
A. People who never ran had healthier knees.
B. Running could make the knee cartilage stronger.
C. Training was very important for marathon runners.
D. Runners had a higher chance of developing arthritis.
35. What is the main idea of paragraph 4?
A. What causes knee problems. B. What to do during long runs.
C. How to warm up before running. D. Is running bad for our knees.
36. What will the writer probably talk about next?
A. The benefits of running. B. The best time for running.
C. Common running mistakes we make. D. Tips for smart training in running.

Do you know sign language? It is a way of communicating by using hands, faces, and bodies. It helps deaf (聋的) or hard-of-hearing people share their thoughts and feelings easily. There are over 300 different sign languages around the world. Just like spoken languages, each country has its own special way of signing.
Sign language has a long history. Historical records show that deaf people used simple hand signs in ancient times. Known as the “Father of the Deaf”, the Frenchman Charles-Michel de l’Épée played a key role in developing sign language. He opened the world’s first free public school for deaf children. He collected these children’s home signs and made the first sign language dictionary. His ideas later influenced the development of deaf education and sign languages in many countries.
Sign language is more than just a way to communicate. It serves as a bridge to connect people. Every year on 23rd September, we celebrate the International Day of Sign Languages to show the importance of sign language. Today, we can see sign language on TV, in schools, and even in hospitals. Even if we’re not deaf, learning sign language can help us make new friends and communicate with deaf people.
In short, sign language is a powerful communication tool. Why not try learning it? It can open up a new world for us and help us connect with more people.
