61-year-old farmer Cliff Young showed up at the most difficult race in Australia — 875 kilometers — in overalls and gumboots (工装服和橡胶靴). He went on to win in a new record time without any training, prevailing over the best athletes.
As the race began, the runners left Cliff far behind. Many people must have thought: Cliff would soon drop out. But when other racers took a break to get some sleep before the next tiring day, Cliff kept on, making up distance to the leaders. He thought about herding (放牧) sheep to new grassland, a task that took three straight days and nights. He kept himself awake by imagining he was herding his sheep.
Cliff finished the race in five days, 11 hours, a full two days faster than the former record. He became famous overnight. Not only did he himself run so far with so little experience and sleep, but he also divided the prize money equally among the race’s top runners. He said he didn’t know there was prize money and felt bad accepting it. “Those other runners worked as hard as I did,” he explained. He never ran for fame or money. He simply wanted to see how well he could do.
Today, a memorial in the shape of a gumboot stands in the Beech Forest where Cliff grew up. In later long-distance races, professional runners took up Cliff’s energy-saving way of running. But what Cliff Young will be remembered for most is his big heart.

In the green mountains of southern Oman, men in traditional clothes are singing old poems in a special language. They are trying to keep this spoken tradition alive -- only 2% of the population uses this ancient language now.
Khalid, a 41-year-old poet, sits under a tent and reads the poems. Other men repeat his words attentively.“Jibbali poetry helps us save our language and teach it to young people,”Kathiri tells AFP(法新社) .
Most people in Oman speak Arabic. But in Dhofar, a mountainous area, people speak Jibbali. Researcher Almashani says it is an “endangered language”,with fewer than 120,000 speakers in a country of over 5 million. It is a real language with its own rules. It is older than Arabic and comes from South Arabian languages.
“Jibbali is very old,”Almashani says. Dhofar’s isolation(隔离状态)once protected it -- mountains to the west, the Rub’ al Khali desert to the north, and the Indian Ocean to the south. But isolation is not enough. Another Dhofar language, Bathari, is almost dead, with only 3 or 4 speakers left . Some fear Jibbali may face the same condition.
Saeed Shamas, a social media professional who supports Dhofari heritage, said it was important for him to raise his children in a Jibbali-speaking environment to help keep the language alive. “If everyone around you speaks Jibbali, from your father, to your grandparents, then this is the language you will speak," he said .
After the poetry reading, nearby children told AFP they like Jibbali more than Arabic. But Almashani warns Jibbali is not taught in schools or well-recorded, so it is still in danger. Almasham and his team are making a dictionary with 125,000 words, translated into Arabic and English. They also plan a digital version with sound to help people say it.
28.What activity is described in the first two paragraphs?
A. Teaching Arabic to local children.
B. Singing ancient poems in Jibbali.
C. Learning spoken Jibbali attentively.
D. Discussing how to save the Jibbali language.
29. What once helped the survival of Jibbali in Dhofa?
A .The popularity of Jibbali poetry.
B. The influence of other languages.
C.The wide use of Jibbali in schools.
D. The geographical location of Dhofar.
30. What can we learn from Saeed Shamas’ words?
A. Schools should teach the Jibbali language.
B. Arabians should speak Jibbali in their daily life.
C. Education plays an important role in keeping Jibbali alive.
D. Language environment is important for keeping Jibbali alive.
31.What can we infer about the future of the Jibbali language from the text?
A. It has a bright future as it is being actively protected.
B. Its survival is uncertain despite the joint efforts to protect it.
C. It will gradually replace Arabic as the main language in Dhofar.
D. It will soon disappear because of its limited number of speakers.
D
"Practice makes perfect" is a well-known saying that has long been popular around the world. But do these words truly hold water when it comes to becoming an expert in a certain field?
It is commonly believed that if a person puts in at least 10,000 hours of practice, they will will reach “perfection” or reach the level of an expert. This idea was brought to widespread attention by Malcolm Gladwell in his 2008 best-selling book Outliers: The Story of Success, with examples like the Beatles and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates — both of whom had logged over 10,000 hours of practice before achieving great success.
However, this so-called "10,000-hour rule" has been challenged by some research. Anders Ericsson, whose study first inspired Gladwell’s theory, later explained that it is not the quantity of practice but its quality that matters most. What truly drives skill improvement is purposeful practice — a highly structured activity that requires focused attention, specific tasks beyond one’s current ability, and immediate, constructive feedback. For example, a pianist who mindlessly repeats a familiar piece for hours will not see much progress, while one who concentrates on perfecting a difficult passage and adjusts techniques based on a teacher’s advice will develop much faster. Moreover, experts in many fields have also pointed out that supportive environments, such as access to quality coaching and enough learning materials, are very necessary factors that cannot be ignored in the process of becoming an expert.
All in all, practice does make a difference in improving one’s skills, but purposeful practice and other factors play a more crucial role in one’s journey toward being perfect. Therefore, it is time we abandon the belief that "Practice Makes Perfect" and embrace a more comprehensive understanding of what truly leads to mastery.
32. What’s the function of the question in the first paragraph?
A. To support his point. B. To draw a comparison.
C. To introduce the topic. D.To arouse readers’ curiosity.
33. What made the "10,000-hour rule" widely known?
A. Studies about successful examples.
B. Anders Ericsson’s research findings.
C. The successful stories of famous musicians.
D. Malcolm Gladwell’s 2008 best-selling book.
34.What does the example of the pianist want to show in Paragraph 3?
A. Purposeful practice contributes more to skill improvement.
B. Teachers’ advice has no effect on a pianist’s skill development.
C. Repeating a piece for hours is the best way to improve piano skills.
D. Supportive environments are more important than practice for pianists.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A. Practice Makes Perfect: How Experts Are Made.
B. Beyond Practice: What It Takes to Be an Expert.
C.10,000 Hours of Practice: A Golden Rule to Follow.
D. Purposeful Practice: The Secret to Perfect Performance.

The school’s sports meeting was coming, but in our class, everyone, including me,
wouldn’t like to try when facing the long-distance running event. We found helplessness in the teacher’s eyes. Though she tried to raise our sense of honor and the courage to challenge ourselves, all of us chose to be silent.
Just as the teacher was about to give up the event, a familiar voice came: “Tim and I sign up for the long race!” I seemed to hear my heartbeat racing. Me? Long run? How is this possible? I had never been in a running race. I looked up sharply and fixed my eyes on my best friend Todd, who was smiling to me.“I...I have never been...” I murmured. Before I could finish, he came over, patted me gently on the shoulder, and said: “Don’t be afraid. I’ll help you.” Then the classroom suddenly burst into cheers. At that moment, the fear in my heart was quickly replaced by a strong sense of responsibility.
In the days that followed, Todd became my “coach”. He carefully made a training plan and spent all our spare time on the playground. We practised a lot, sweated together and ran faster and faster. Every time I wanted to give up, Todd would encourage me with a smile, “If you are tired, just look at me!” His warm smile and encouraging words always made me regain confidence.
Several weeks later, the big day came.

I stood on the starting line with Todd together.Heart pounding with excitement and nervousness, my palms sweated and my legs trembled. As the gun fired, we dashed forward like arrows. I followed Todd closely behind. Gradually I felt more and more tired and couldn’t keep up. Just at that time, Todd glanced back with an encouraging smile and shouted,“Come on!” Hearing his voice, I seemed to regain my strength and tried to speed my pace. With sweat and effort, we crossed the finish line at last and we both won.
After the race, Todd and I went on to the winner’s stage. We grinned at each other breathlessly, our faces glowing with great joy. When we were awarded, our classmates cheered enthusiastically from below and our teacher gave us a big thumb-up. Seeing the thrilling scene, I felt a sense of pride welled up in my heart. I gave Tedd a tight hug and said gratefully,“Thank you so much!” I knew this wasn't just a matter of winning or losing; it was about finding the courage to challenge myself through my friend’s encouragement, which also brought honor to our class.
