The weather is getting cold. We have a warm home to keep us comfortable. But what about stray (流浪的) animals? They are poor and alone. All they can do is to walk along the streets and hope to find food here and there.
There are around 500 million stray dogs in the world and a similar number of stray cats. Why are there so many stray animals? Abandonment (遗弃) may be the main reason. The owners who only care about their own needs easily give up their pets, especially when the animal is ill or born with some problems. They should answer for that.
Today, the whole world is calling for better care of stray animals. And many countries have taken good ways. In the UK and the US, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (防止虐待动物协会) has a 24-hour hotline. Anyone can call if he or she finds someone is hurting an animal. In Germany, there are many laws for animal protection. The government encourages people to adopt (领养) pets from animal shelters (收容所) and give them new homes.
You can also do something to help. Once you find a stray animal, don’t try to catch it by yourself. It’s dangerous. You can ask adults (成年人) around you for help. If it is safe enough to catch a stray animal, you’d better send it to an animal shelter. Most people there volunteer to take care of stray animals.
There is one thing you need to keep in mind. When you decide to have a pet, treat it carefully and gently. Never give it up, or it will become a poor stray animal.
1. The writer writes Paragraph 1 to ____ .
A. show the weather is getting cold
B. make readers take pity on stray animals
C. tell readers that they are happier than stray animals
D. ask readers to give some food to the stray animals
2. The underlined phrase “answer for” in Paragraph 2 means “ ____ ” in Chinese.
A. 回答 B. 照顾 C. 思考 D. 负责
3. What is TRUE according to the passage?
A. England has a 24-hour hotline on weekends to prevent people from hurting animals.
B. German government helps animals find new homes.
C. Phone calls about adopting animals are accepted in the US at any time.
D. When you find a stray animal, catch it and send it to the animal centre at once.
4. The writer’s main purpose (目的) of writing the passage is to ____ .
A. work on the problem of stray animals
B. call on more people to care about stray animals
C. criticize (批评) people who give up their pets
D. show many countries are taking action to protect stray animals

Imagine looking through 3.7 million outfits (全套服装) online to find the right one. Sounds really hard, doesn’t it? Well, with the help of AI stylists (造型师), it’s not so hard anymore.
An AI stylist can help people choose outfits. It searches for pictures of clothes online and collects thousands of outfits created by human stylists. It can also understand words and pick out important information about each piece of clothing. It keeps all the pictures and words in a data set (数据集). Then, the AI stylist gives people fashion (时尚) ideas according to what they like. A team of people look after the data set and make sure it always has the newest information. They help the AI stylist get better at choosing clothes by improving its rules. The AI stylist can also suggest something new to try, even if it’s a little different from what the user usually wears. People often like to try something new!
An AI stylist can run into problems when people from different cultures use it. What is popular in Asia may be different from what is cool in Europe. The AI stylist should know what is popular in each place and change its advice to match people’s likes in different places. So, people make rules for Al stylists to follow. Different countries can change these rules to match different styles.
An AI stylist also has to keep up with “fashion rules”. Sometimes, certain clothes don’t go well together. It is difficult for the AI stylist to understand. So another AI model that can understand the cut, style and color of outfits adds that information to the data set.
People have compared (比较) outfits by AI stylists and human stylists, and AI stylists have done pretty well. Maybe one day we won’t put together an outfit without using our AI stylists first.
1. Why do people create AI stylists?
A. To sell clothes for online stores. B. To guess what will be in fashion.
C. To help people pick and match outfits. D. To give fashion ideas to clothing makers.
2. What do the team of people do for AI stylists?
A. Control the data set of outfits. B. Test AI stylists’ fashion advice.
C. Connect AI stylists with the Internet. D. Find pictures and words about clothing.
3. Which of the following might be a challenge for an AI stylist?
A. Comparing users from different cultures.
B. Suggesting something new for users to try.
C. Picking out important information about clothing.
D. Choosing different styles for users from different countries.
4. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?
A. ①②③//④⑤ B. ①//②③//④//⑤ C. ①//②//③//④⑤ D. ①//②//③④//⑤

One day, three of my friends came to our house.
They told me they were going to Africa. They asked me if I wanted to go with them. I said, “Yes, of course I’d love to.”
We started to prepare all the necessary things for the journey. Soon we were ready to go. I said goodbye to my wife and we started our journey. Our plan was to be back in two months.
We left Brazil (巴西) on the first of September, 1659. Our ship was very big but we were only seventeen men. The ship was full of things for business. We had cups, glass, mirrors, knives and other things.
At the beginning of our journey, the weather was very good, but very hot. In one week, a hurricane (飓风) came and it was threatening our ship for the next twelve days. After the hurricane passed, we saw we went quite far away from our original (原来的) journey and were instead close to the northern part of Brazil near the Orinoco River. The ship was badly damaged, so we could no longer go to Africa.
The captain wanted us to go back and repair the ship, but I strongly disagreed with him. We went over the maps and decided the best thing to do was to go to Barbados and repair the ship there.
When we started this short trip, a second hurricane came. The next morning one of the sailors cried out, “Land?” and at that moment the ship stopped in shallow (浅的) water. We expected the ship to break apart (解体) at any moment because of the strong wind, so we all got into the small boat the ship carried. This was very dangerous because the seventeen of us were too crowded (拥挤的) in the boat, and it had no sail.
The waves (浪) were very big. The wind was too strong. The wind pushed us to big rocks. We knew the crash was close.
Suddenly, a huge wave came and overturned the boat. I was covered with water and couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t see the others or the boat. But I saw a little beach between the rocks.
Another wave carried me to the beach. I tried to get up. I also tried to go far away from the sea. I was able to move ten metres up. I was safe. But my arms and legs were very weak. I fell down and I was lying on the beach.

The world will be very different in 2045. So what’s going to happen then? It’s pretty possible that robots and AI will change the world a lot. Also, self-driving and flying cars will come into our daily life.
However, scientists have even bigger ideas. In the video called Forward to the Future, scientists predicted what the world would be like in 2045.
Dr. Justin Sanchez believes we’ll be able to control things simply by using our mind. “Think about a world where you just use your mind to control your environment,” Justin said. Scientists are working hard to have some progress (进展).
“The future has more than just that. Many other exciting things could change the buildings and other things around us,” says Stefanie Tompkins. “We’ll be able to build things that are very strong but not heavy,” she predicted.
Pam Melroy believes we’re going to find that we have a very different relationship with the machines around us. “I think we’ll be able to control a machine just by only saying some simple words,” she said. For example, right now to land a plane, in Pam’s words, a pilot may just need to say the words “prepare for landing”. Then the computer knows the steps it needs to take. Or maybe, a pilot won’t even be necessary.

Protect Yancheng Wetland, enjoy its beauty
Yancheng Wetland is a great treasure in Jiangsu with unique beauty in each season.
Among the four seasons, I like spring best because it is the time when birds return, bringing life and hope to the wetland. The sky is filled with all kinds of birds, and the wetland becomes a lively home for them.
Wetlands are quite important to Yancheng. They are home to red-crowned cranes and the elk, providing a safe and suitable living environment for these rare animals. Besides, wetlands can store water, which helps prevent floods and maintain the balance of the local water cycle.
To keep Yancheng Wetland healthy, we can take several actions. First, we should reduce pollution by not throwing rubbish into the wetland and using environmentally friendly products. Second, we can take part in volunteer activities to plant trees and protect the plants and animals in the wetland. Finally, we should raise public awareness of wetland protection so that more people can join in the effort.
