This is one of China’s most famous landmarks. People built it over 2,000 years ago to protect their country from enemies. It is very, very long—about 21,196 kilometers, making it the longest wall in the world. It was made of stone, brick, and earth. Today, many parts of the wall are open to visitors from all over the world.

B
One dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all. Three times Della counted it. One dollar and eighty-seven cents. And the next day would be Christmas. She could not afford a present, so she sat down and cried.
Jim and Della had two possessions (财物) which they were both proud of. One was Jim’s gold watch that was from his father and his grandfather. The other was Della’s beautiful hair. It fell about her, and reached below her knee.
Della put on her old brown jacket and her old brown hat. Then she went out of the door and down the stairs to the street.
She stopped at a store. The sign in front of the store read “Hair Goods”.
“Will you buy my hair?” asked Della.
“Twenty dollars,” the woman said.
Then Della searched through the stores looking for a present for Jim.
She found it at last. It was a watch chain (表链). The bill was twenty-one dollars.
At seven o’clock, the coffee was made and dinner was ready.
Jim was never late. Della heard his steps on the stairs.
The door opened and Jim walked in. He stopped inside the door. His eyes were fixed on Della, and there was an expression in them that she could not understand.
“Jim,” she cried, “don’t look at me that way. I sold my hair to buy you a Christmas present.”
Jim drew a box from his pocket and put it on the table.
Della opened it. There lay the set of combs that she had always wanted. Now they were hers, but her hair was gone.
She smiled and held out Jim’s present. “I hunted all over town to find it. Give me your watch. I want to see how it looks on it.”
Instead of giving her the watch, Jim sat down, put his hands behind his head and smiled. “I’m sorry, Della,” he said, “but I’m happy we did the same thing. ________”
26.Which of the following is the most valuable to Della?
A.The money. B.The combs. C.Jim’s watch. D.Jim’s love.
27.What did the expression in Jim’s eyes mean when he saw Della?
A.He was cheerful but angry. B.He was excited but afraid.
C.He was surprised but sad. D.He was curious but worried.
28.What did Jim most probably say at the end of the story?
A.You must be excited that I bought you the combs.
B.You know how much I’ve always wanted a watch chain.
C.I sold my watch to get the money to buy you the combs.
D.I can’t wait to see how good it looks on my gold watch.
根据“Jim and Della had two possessions which they were both proud of. One was Jim’s gold watch that was from his father and his grandfather. The other was Della’s beautiful hair...‘Jim,’ she cried, ‘don’t look at me that way. I sold my hair to buy you a Christmas present.’”
根据“He stopped inside the door. His eyes were fixed on Della, and there was an expression in them that she could not understand...Della opened it. There lay the set of combs that she had always wanted.”
根据“She found it at last. It was a watch chain. The bill was twenty-one dollars...Della opened it. There lay the set of combs that she had always wanted...but I’m happy we did the same thing.”
C
Growing up, we have heard a lot of stereotypes (刻板印象) of how sex (性别) influences interests and jobs. For example, boys do math better than girls, while girls are better at learning languages. We usually think this is because of differences in how boys’ and girls’ brains work. But is it true?
According to past research, some parts of our brains can be different in size. Scientists used to think these differences might influence how well men and women think and do things. They discovered this by scanning (扫描) people’s brains. However, in most of the research, researchers only scanned several hundred people. As said in a 2022 study, for such research to be believable, you would need more samples (样本) of scanning the brains of a few thousand people at least.
In 2021, the UK Biobank, a big database (数据库) used for research, scanned the brains of 40,000 people in the UK, providing new insights. It showed differences between men and women in the size of certain brain parts. About 33% of these parts were found to be larger in men, while another 33% of these parts were larger in women.
However, these differences were very small, often just a size difference in percentage (百分比). The differences are not big enough to form a conclusion (结论) from them, Camille Williams from the University of Texas at Austin, US, told New Scientist.
Also, our brains might change in structure (结构) and size according to our life experiences. For example, even if a part of a man’s brain, responsible for doing math, is larger than that of a woman, it is possibly because he takes jobs which use math skills. So, any brain differences between men and women could be a result, not a reason, of different roles in life and society, said New Scientist.
29.How does the writer organize the passage?
A.By listing different opinions about the same topic.
B.By giving examples first and then making a conclusion.
C.By comparing past research with new one all the time.
D.By showing a problem, discussing research and then giving the result.
30.What does the writer think of the past research?
A.Scanning people’s brains is not helpful.
B.It helps people better understand themselves.
C.Its result was believable.
D.Their sample sizes were too small.
31.What does the underlined word “insights” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Understandings. B.Problems. C.Questions. D.Plans.
32.Which of the following sentences is true?
A.Life experiences can lead to changes in the structure and size of our brains.
B.The differences in brain size are the main reason of different interests and jobs.
C.Scientists are sure that brain differences decide how people think and do things.
D.The UK Biobank found huge differences in brain size between men and women.
【答案】29.D 30.D 31.A 32.A
根据“Growing up, we’ve heard a lot of stereotypes (刻板印象) of how sex (性别) influences interests and jobs...But is it true?” 可知第二段讨论过去小样本研究的局限性(past studies);根据“In 2021, the UK Biobank, a big database used for research, scanned the brains of 40,000 people in the UK”以及“Also, our brains might change in structure (结构) and size according to our life experiences.”
根据“However, in most of the research, researchers only scanned several hundred people... you would need more samples of scanning the brains of a few thousand people at least.”
根据“It showed differences between men and women in the size of certain brain parts...providing new insights.” 故选A。
根据“Also, our brains might change in structure and size according to our life experiences.” 故选A。
D
China’s Tiangong Space Station welcomed a new thing — a special hot-air oven! Recently, astronauts from the Shenzhou-21 and Shenzhou-20 missions used this device successfully for the first time in space. This is an important step to improve Chinese astronauts’ dining experience in orbit. Now, they can enjoy tasty baked (烤的) food even hundreds of kilometers away from Earth.
Before this new invention, most space food was cooked beforehand and ready to eat. There were not many choices for taste and texture. The new oven has greatly made the space menu more varied Astronauts have already tried baking popular dishes like “Orleans-style” chicken wings and black pepper beef steak. A video from the space station showed them putting the chicken wings into the oven carefully. After 28 minutes of exact heating, the delicious and soft chicken wings were done. The astronauts liked them very much.
However, baking in space brings special challenges. Liu Weibo, an expert in space life support technology, explained that the main difficulties are dealing with smoke and oil fumes (油烟). These could make the space station’s air dirty. The specially designed oven uses new technologies to clean smoke and collect oil. This makes sure the air in the cabin (船舱) stays clean. Besides, the oven is made to be strong and long-lasting. It can work well at least 500 times to meet the needs of long space missions.
The new oven is part of China’s ongoing work to make astronauts’ living conditions better in space. Now, the space station has more than 190 kinds of food. The menu is updated every 10 days to give different and healthy food choices. Apart from the oven, the “space garden” on the station is also growing well. Astronauts have successfully grown fresh vegetables like lettuce and cherry tomatoes. These add more fresh food to their meals.
“When astronauts stay in a small space for months, eating self-baked food not only makes their taste buds happy but also brings great mental (精神的) comfort,” Liu Weibo said. It turns out that a nice and delicious meal is always the best comfort — even in the huge space far from Earth.
33.What is the main difficulty of baking in space?
A.Not having enough baking materials on board.
B.Having no fixed heating time for baking food.
C.Dealing with smoke and oil fumes properly.
D.Having little space to place the baking oven.
34.What does China’s effort to improve space food show?
A.Chinese government pays little attention to astronauts’ needs.
B.China is developing modern space life support technologies.
C.Enough food is the most important thing in our space station.
D.Astronauts only care about the taste of their everyday meals.
35.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Astronauts will grow fresh vegetables in space garden.
B.Difficult challenges of space baking and our solutions.
C.A special hot-air oven on Tiangong and its importance.
D.The variety of food provided on China’s space station.
36.Which of the following shows the proper use of the special hot-air oven’s design idea?
A.Baking cookies in a home kitchen with good ventilation.
B.Using a smoke-free small oven in a closed camping tent.
C.Heating cold rice for many students in a school cafeteria.
D.Cooking vegetable meat soup for a big family at a picnic.

Music, like magic, is something that touches everyone’s heart, no matter where we come from or what language we speak. It’s more than just a fun way to pass the time. 37 Music is really amazing.
When we’re feeling down or stressed out from school, music can be of great help to us. Just putting on our headphones and listening to our favorite music can make us feel better in no time. 38 It takes away worries and offers a peaceful escape from our daily life.
But music does more than just make us feel good. It can also help us learn better. Have you ever noticed that listening to music while studying can make it easier to remember what you’re reading or learning? 39 As a result, we can get new information and knowledge more easily.
There’s one more special thing that music can do. It gives us a voice. 【答案】
41.to create 42.was found 43.from 44.includes 45.an 46.their 47.kinds 48.but 49.more interested 50.really
create“创造”,use sth. to do sth.“用某物做某事”,固定搭配。故填to create。
根据“In 1982”可知,该句时态为一般过去时;主语“an ancient root carving of a mythical (神话的) animal”和动词find之间是被动关系,所以用一般过去时的被动语态,其结构为was/were+动词的过去分词;主语是单数,be动词用was,find的过去分词是found。故填was found。
come from“来自”,固定搭配。故填from。
故填an。
故填their。
由“not only an art form...also”可知,not only...but also...“不仅……而且……”,固定搭配。故填but。
interested“感兴趣的”,根据“than before”可知,此处用比较级形式,interested的比较级是more interested。故填more interested。
Huang Xuhua, the chief designer of China’s first-generation nuclear submarines (核潜艇), passed away on 6th February 2025.
Born in March 1926 in Guangdong province, Huang was the third child of his parents. He entered Shanghai Jiao Tong University to study shipbuilding. After graduating, Huang started his lifelong career in China’s shipbuilding industry. In 1958, Huang was chosen to join the research team tasked with designing China’s first nuclear submarine.
In the beginning, there were poor basic conditions for Chinese scientists to develop such a hard task at that time. Besides, other countries didn’t share their technology with us.
Huang and other scientists searched newspapers and magazines for information. They finally came up with five plans after piecing together all the information they found and carefully studying two US submarine models.
In the following years, Huang and several other top engineers led the research and development for the nation’s first-generation nuclear submarines. After years of efforts, China finally built its first nuclear submarine— the first Type 091— in 1970, becoming the fifth nation to have such hardware. Huang’s name remained classified (机密的) until 1987 because of the sensitive nature of his work.

Because of his outstanding contributions, Huang was given the Medal of the Republic, China’s highest honor, in 2019.
