Cooking Outside the Box?
Are rice cookers only for cooking rice? Are microwaves just for heating milk? My sister Amy and I believed these common kitchen tools could do far more—with a little creativity.
Since Mom left for a three-month training program in another city, Dad has had to rush home from work every day to cook dinner for us. We could clearly see how ____13____ he was, especially on days when he got stuck in heavy traffic, returning home exhausted (精疲力尽的). One Thursday evening, he called us with worry: “Oh, no, it’s already six!” he ____14____. “The traffic is a nightmare, and we won’t eat until 8: 30!”
After hanging up the phone, Amy and I exchanged a determined look. We decided to take action. Forty minutes later, Dad arrived home, looking ready to give up and take us out for fast food. But when he opened the door, he was ____15____: The table had been set with three bowls of rice, a bowl of tomato and egg drop soup, and a plate of shredded chicken (鸡丝).
“Did you two really cook all this?” he asked in ____16____.
“We used our heads—no stove required!” I replied with a smile.
“Really?” he repeated, still surprised.
As we ate we ____17____ our little experiment: we cooked rice first, then added some tomatoes, beaten eggs and a little salt to the rice cooker to simmer soup. For the chicken, we shredded chicken legs, seasoned (调味) them lightly, and heated them in the microwave for some minutes. The whole meal took just 30 minutes, with no mess at all. “This is just as delicious as my traditional ____18____,” Dad said honestly. “Maybe even better!”
Later, I realized we’d solved a small daily problem with ____19____. To parents, our way might seem unconventional, but if a good result—a warm meal, a less stressed dad—really counts, does the “right” way matter?
Maybe parents should let kids be creative and think outside the box. Our “unexpected” method ____20____ wonders. Now Dad no longer has to rush home after work, and we can enjoy dinner together without worries. That’s the wonderful power of creativity!
13. A. bored B. stressed C. hungry D. sleepy
14. A. noticed B. expected C. proved D. complained
15. A. excited B. proud C. shocked D. afraid
16. A. disbelief B. dishonesty C. discomfort D. disrespect
17. A. offered B. promised C. whispered D. explained
18. A. tasting B. cooking C. eating D. feeding
19. A. imagination B. effort C. patience D. creativity
20. A. worked B. discovered C. recorded D. searched

When I arrived at the Sign Language Center for my first American Sign Language (ASL) class, a man took one look at me and held up some fingers. One? Two? I put up one finger, and he directed me to the Level 1 class. Class time was strictly “voices off” to encourage immersive (沉浸式的) learning and to show respect to the deaf teachers. Without the power of speech, all my classmates and I could do was smile and nod at one another as we took in the new vocabulary.
As a writer, I pride myself on a certain talent for language. I was taught that there’s a perfect mix of words that can most exactly communicate any thought. With ASL, I expected to feel similarly, and thought fluency would come after I collected enough signs. The first thing we learn in ASL class is the alphabet. As my classmates and I used ASL to ask and answer questions, we came across words without matching signs and could only spell them with difficulty. That was the main experience of our first weeks learning ASL. It was embarrassing (尴尬的): Seeing a dozen politely smiling faces watching me as I slowly spelled, misspelled and restarted spelling words—often many times—was its own kind of suffering.
Over time, I picked up on new ways, like waving a hand or stomping on the ground to get someone’s attention. My fingers stopped as they reached for new shapes, and I struggled to differentiate very similar looking signs. Eventually I realized that when you’re communicating in sign language, diction (措词) is not as important as the way you express what you’re communicating. I once asked a teacher how to sign the word “desperate (渴望的)”. “ASL doesn’t have a direct translation of every English word,” he told me. “If you want to sign ‘desperate’, you might just sign the word ‘want’, but with the proper facial and body posturing to show your desperation. It doesn’t make sense to sign ‘frustrated’ if your face doesn’t look frustrated at all, ” he added—it’s like speaking in a calm voice and showing no facial expressions while you’re angry.
I’ve been attending ASL classes for almost two years. At the beginning, my reason was common: a childhood curiosity with “secret languages”. While ASL may not completely share a vocabulary with English, that doesn’t mean it lacks precision (精确). Its precision, I’ve learned, lies in the common language of the body.
24. How did the writer and her classmates communicate in the first ASL class?
A. They spelled the words. B. They smiled and nodded.
C. They held up their fingers. D. They looked at each other.
25. Why did the writer feel embarrassed at the beginning of learning ASL?
A. She wasn’t sure about the answers. B. She had to smile at her classmates.
C. She misspelled and respelled many times. D. She didn’t know how to get others’ attention.
26. What has the writer learned from this experience?
A. The body gives life to language. B. Secret language is difficult to learn.
C. ASL has the same vocabulary as English. D. Spelling is more important than expression.
C
A trip to Mars would take about eight months on a modern spaceship. That might seem like a great opportunity to catch up on your sleep. But a recent experiment finds that people may develop sleep problems on a long space journey, or at least on the pretend trip in these tests.
“If we at some point really want to go to Mars and we want to send humans, then we need to know how they will cope (处理) , not just physically but also mentally,” Mathias Basner told Science News. He is a sleep researcher at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine in Philadelphia. His team published its new findings in early January.
Their experiment was like a long-running game of make-believe: Six men spent 520 days—a little more than 74 weeks—on a pretend trip to Mars. In fact, they spent the entire time confined (封闭的) inside a small, windowless capsule in Moscow, Russia. The goal of this experiment was to learn how people would cope with living in close quarters, and facing the psychological pressure during travel to and from the Red Planet.
During their trip, the travelers pretended to land on Mars, set up equipment, and carry out science tests. Throughout the pretend trip, other scientists were collecting data on their sleep, activity levels, mood, and cognitive function.
Each participant wore a device on his wrist. Once every minute, that device recorded the man’s motions. From these data, Basner’s team found that the volunteers were less active and slept more as the mission continued. During the last 18. 5 weeks of the trial, most participants were sleeping more each day than they had during the first 18. 5 weeks.
Four of the men also developed sleep problems. One man’s natural sleep cycle shifted from a roughly 24-hour day to almost 25 hours long. By coincidence, that time is closer to the length of a day on Mars. This meant that he was sometimes awake when his members were asleep, and vice versa. Another one of the six pretend travelers slept less over time. Tests showed that he became less alert (警觉的) .
Messing with sleep can have serious consequences, says Jeffrey Sutton. He’s a doctor and scientist who worked on the study and also directs the Center for Space Medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
“When you are doing high-risk behavior in space, a performance deficit can be life threatening,” he told Science News, noting that even small mistakes could have extremely terrible results in the severe environment of space.
The decrease in activity found by Basner’s team could also prove problematic in space, says Sutton. He suggests that astronauts may need to follow stricter exercise to stay healthy and maintain their sleep patterns during long space journeys.
27. Why was the experiment carried out?
A. To test the safety in space travel.
B. To record the length of a day on Mars.
C. To explore long space journeys’ effects on humans.
D To measure how much sleep astronauts need during the trip.
28. What the main problem did some travelers face during long space journey?
A. They lost their sense of time due to sleep disorders.
B. They had to be disconnected from the outside world.
C. They suffered from physical pain throughout the journey.
D. They experienced sleep cycle changes or poorer sleep quality.
29. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Reduced activity and sleep disorders may cause safety problems.
B. Confined environments in space have a positive effect on human sleep.
C. A 25-hour sleep cycle is more suitable for astronauts traveling to Mars.
D. Most volunteers were more active during the last weeks of the experiment.
D
A popular saying goes, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” However, that’s not really true. Words carry a weight far beyond physical effect—they have the power to build us up into confidence, or tear us down into self-doubting shadows. Whether these words come from a stranger’s casual comment , a loved one’s thoughtless remark , or our own self- talk , their effects are just as lasting.
We all talk to ourselves sometimes, though many of us hide this habit out of embarrassment. In reality, this internal dialogue is a natural and even healthy part of human cognition—experts increasingly recognize that vocal self- talk improves focus, memory, and problem-solving. Be aware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. We scold ourselves for small mistakes, or dismiss (忽视) our achievements. This negative self-talk gradually destroys self-respect slowly but surely. So in order to stay positive, we must consciously practice positive self-affirmation. Celebrate the small wins—finishing a work task, acing a quiz, or even just getting out of bed on a hard day—with a sincere “Good job’”
Equally important is the effect of the words we speak to others. Too often, we let words slip out without considering their weight: a critical comment that destroys, or a thoughtless remark that dismisses someone’s feelings. Yet language is a tool of connection or division. A warm “Thank you for your help” can brighten a stranger’s day and strengthen a relationship. Conversely, harsh (刻薄的) words leave scars that may never fully heal. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably answer in a similar manner. Our words are catching— kindness brings out kindness, while negativity fuels conflict.
The lasting power of words is why we often regret things we’ve said in anger or hurry, and why unkind words spoken to us in childhood can still keep coming to our mind as adults. Before speaking, we should pause and ask three simple questions: Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary? If the answer to any of these is “no”, the words are better left unsaid.
Words have enormous power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-respect and motivate others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours.
30. What is Paragraph 1 mainly talking about?
A. Words have a lasting effect on us. B. Positive words can give us confidence.
C. A popular saying about words is not true. D. Words’ effects are more lasting than physical ones.
31. What is the word “self-affirmation” in Paragraph 2 closest in meaning to?
A. The act of exploring one’s own talent. B. The act of improving one’s own habits.
C. The act of recognizing one’s own worth. D. The act of learning one’s own weaknesses.
32. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To compare self- talk and words to others.
B. To explain why negative words are common.
C. To encourage readers to use words in a positive way.
D. To describe how self-talk affects people’s confidence.
33. Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?
A. The Power of Words B. The Reach of Words
C. The Spread of Words D. The Warmth of Words
第二部分
本部分共5题,共20分。根据题目要求,完成相应任务。
四、阅读表达 (34至36每题2分,37题4分,共10分)
阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
Some people think creativity is making something completely new, so they do not think of themselves as creative ones. However, some other people think creativity can just be expressing themselves through everyday acts and they are born creative because it is not an all-or-nothing quality or skill.
Whether or not we realize it, we all have the ability to express creativity. Sometimes the way to creative productivity is being willing to do something different.
Are you someone who loves to read comics? Perhaps it is time you create one of your own. Don’t worry if you cannot draw very well or feel that you cannot write humorous reports for characters. Nobody says this is an exam! You only have to please yourself, to gain the satisfaction that you try something new, all on your own. If you feel easy, you can of course share it with your loved ones, or post it on social media.
Are you someone who likes to express yourself in writing? Try writing a blog. This is a new form of a diary. In your blog, you can write about your thoughts, opinions and experiences. You can also write stories or plays, if you feel up to it! The blog provides you with a platform to create something new every day, in written forms.
Are you someone who likes to be alone? Now, think about the things that make you happy. Find a small place in your room, or any place in your home, where you can spend time with yourself. It can be a small corner next to your bed or a wall. It can be a poster of your favorite rock star or photos of your friends. You can also pick a guitar if you like to play instruments, or a few storybooks if you love reading. Some of you may like flowers, candles or pretty things. Decorate your area with your favorite things in any way you like. That is creativity! And if you do feel bored with this, you can change, add or remove something.
By realizing the chances in our daily lives to inspire our creativity, no matter how small, we may become more comfortable with taking bigger creative leaps in other aspects of our lives.

【答案】24. B 25. C 26. A

D. To measure how much sleep astronauts need during the trip.

B To explain why negative words are common.
C. To encourage readers to use words in a positive way.
D To describe how self-talk affects people’s confidence.
33. Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?
A. The Power of Words B. The Reach of Words
C. The Spread of Words D. The Warmth of Words
【答案】30. A 31. C 32. C 33. A

【导语】本文是一篇议论文,主要论述了语言的力量,包括语言对自身和他人的影响,强调了积极语言的重要性,并提醒人们在使用语言时要谨慎思考。
【30题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Words carry a weight far beyond physical effect—they have the power to build us up into confidence, or tear us down into self-doubting shadows. Whether these words come from a stranger’s casual comment, a loved one’s thoughtless remark, or our own self-talk, their effects are just as lasting.”可知,第一段主要论述了语言对我们有持久的影响。故选A。
【31题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段“This negative self-talk gradually destroys self-respect slowly but surely. So in order to stay positive, we must consciously practice positive self-affirmation. Celebrate the small wins—finishing a work task, acing a quiz, or even just getting out of bed on a hard day—with a sincere ‘Good job’”可知,消极的自我对话会逐渐破坏自尊,为了保持积极,我们必须有意识地练习积极的自我肯定,庆祝小胜利,用真诚的“干得好”来肯定自己,所以“self-affirmation”与“认可自己的价值”意思相近。故选C。
【32题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Words have enormous power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-respect and motivate others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours.”可知,作者写这篇文章的主要目的是鼓励读者以积极的方式使用语言。故选C。
【33题详解】
最佳标题题。根据最后一段“Words have enormous power: both positive and negative.”以及通读全文可知,本文主要论述了语言的力量,包括语言对自身和他人的影响,强调了积极语言的重要性,并提醒人们在使用语言时要谨慎思考,所以最佳标题为“语言的力量”。故选A。
