When Amir says he is 15, people laugh. But his boss, Ibrahim, a boyish fellow with a gentle smile, understands. He, too, was once a slight kid who looked young for his age, working in this same auto yard in Nigeria’s second biggest city, Kano. Amir’s father, an electrician, had worried that his oldest son would end up unemployed — either wandering the streets or even stealing. So he begged Ibrahim to take him on as an apprentice (学徒) after school. The skinny boy reminds the mechanic of himself. Ibrahim only started school at 10 and had to drop out of school at 18, without graduating, because his parents were too poor to pay. He tried tailoring (做裁缝) for two years, but it drove him crazy. In a city full of beggars and thousands of unemployed university graduates, joining a mechanic’s yard felt like his last chance. Ibrahim moved to Kano and he became an apprentice there. But the boss wasn’t convinced he could handle the work. “I was skinny and I looked younger than my age,” Ibrahim recalled. “He said, ‘You can’t be a mechanic.’ I was really determined to prove him wrong.” The boss was not easily pleased. Anyone who was late or wasted time was beaten. The job was so tough that Ibrahim gave up and ran back home. But his mother urged him to try again, saying “The path to success isn’t smooth. You’ll face many difficulties. Whether you succeed depends on your determination and actions.” He returned, learning to be a mechanic in seven years, before opening his own workshop. Later, he moved his business to the yard where he had begun working 12 years earlier. Now, as a boss himself, though he sometimes is strict with his workers, he patiently teaches them how to fix cars. He buys them breakfast and lunch, and even when there’s no work, he pays them their daily wages. “I think I’m just lucky because I’m preparing for my future. Not every kid has an opportunity like this.” Amir said. When Amir looks at his boss, his eyes shine with admiration. All he wants is to be just like him. 19. From the passage, we know that Amir _________. A. is training for work B. often wanders the streets C. has dropped out of school D. is an unemployed graduate 20. Why does Amir remind Ibrahim of himself? A. They both tried tailoring for two years. B. They both have parents who cared for them. C. They both acted as part-time apprentices after school. D. They both started to work in an auto yard at a young age. 21. What led Ibrahim to return to his job? A. A good wage. B. Amir’s admiration. C. His boss’s support. D. His mother’s words. 22. According to the passage, which words would best describe Ibrahim? A. Creative and reliable. B. Strict and ambitious. C. Determined and kind. D. Outgoing and patient. 19. A 20. D 21. D 22. So he begged Ibrahim to take him on as an apprentice (学徒) after school. 故选A项。 根据第二段“He, too, was once a slight kid who looked young for his age, working in this same auto yard in Nigeria’s second biggest city, Kano. 以及第四段“The skinny boy reminds the mechanic of himself. 根据第七段“But his mother urged him to try again, saying ‘The path to success isn’t smooth. You’ll face many difficulties. Whether you succeed depends on your determination and actions.’ He returned, learning to be a mechanic in seven years, before opening his own workshop. 根据第六段“I was really determined to prove him wrong. 以及第八段“Now, as a boss himself, though he sometimes is strict with his workers, he patiently teaches them how to fix cars. C When I look back on my 1990s childhood, it’s hard not to feel nostalgic (怀旧的). We rode our bikes, built dens and swam in streams. Though the Internet existed, my parents would boot me off to use the landline. Media was tangible — tapes and CDs — and often consumed as a family. I still recall the excitement of visiting the video shop to select a film. I’ve noticed a huge upswing of interest in “90s parenting” and, this year, the trend seems to have exploded. Former 90s kids are in the thick of it, trying to work out how to parent their own children. There’s a feeling that huge advances in technology have resulted in similar losses. But what are the losses? And was parenting really better back then? “Yes,” says Justin Flom, a father of two and content creator, who built a replica Blockbuster video store for his daughters in his house. “The whole family would pile into the car, head to the video store and walk the rows while deciding what to watch,” he says of his own childhood. “It felt exciting, full of possibility. Scrolling online just isn’t the same.” Justin’s Blockbuster room is a way of making screen time intentional, and that seems to be at the heart of this idea of 90s parenting. “In the 90s, the critique was that TV would rot (腐蚀) your brain, but it was stationary,” he says. “It lived in your living room. Now, media follows us everywhere. It’s in our pockets, on demand, nonstop. With increasing fears about the effects of screen time, and parent-led campaigns such as Smartphone Free Childhood gaining popularity, it’s no surprise so many of us are looking back to the time just before they exploded. Some parents and schools are even giving their children landlines. Scrolling through 90s parenting-themed videos, I’m struck by one video: a group of adults and kids engaging in a back garden water fight (organised via landline), having put all their smartphones in a bowl out of reach. It’s not just about screens. It’s about connection, family time and, actually, time more generally. “Parenting in the 90s was basically just ‘slow’ parenting,” says Jes, a former primary school teacher and a big believer in the importance of play. That means not driving kids from activity to activity so days are jam-packed. Boredom is important, says Melanie Murphy, a mother of two from Dublin. “Long periods of unremarkable time were a gift I didn’t know I’d miss, and I want that for my kids. I don’t want to schedule every hour of their lives.” I’ll admit that when I first encountered the concept of 90s parenting, I thought it was a bit overly emotional. But if that is the case then why, writing this, do I feel so ... sad? I can’t quite seem to shake this feeling of loss, and of wanting to return to a simpler time. Maybe I just need more fun in my life. Time for a water fight, I think. Who’s in? 23. Why did Justin build the Blockbuster room? A. To provide enjoyable family time. B. To compare old and recent movies. C. To share one of his childhood hobbies. D. To prove TV doesn’t damage one’s mind. 24. The author mentioned the “water fight” in Paragraph 5 as an example of _________. A. how popular the 90s parenting-themed videos are B. how commonly landlines are used in daily life C. how people value real-world family activities D. how people reduce the impact of screen time 25. Which of the following is in line with the idea of “slow parenting”? A. Encouraging children to use educational apps. B. Allowing children to take time to just daydream. C. Adding amusing tasks to children’s daily routine. D. Giving children clear schedules to learn various skills. 26. What is the author’s attitude toward 90s parenting? A. Regretful. B. Unconcerned. C. Appreciative. D. Doubtful. A 24. C 25. B 26. 根据第三段中““The whole family would pile into the car, head to the video store and walk the rows while deciding what to watch,” he says of his own childhood. “It felt exciting, full of possibility. Scrolling online just isn’t the same.”(他回忆自己的童年时说:“全家人会挤进车里,去音像店,一排排逛着挑选要看的影片。那种感觉很兴奋,充满了期待。而在网上滑动屏幕挑选完全不是这种感觉”)”以及第四段中“Justin’s Blockbuster room is a way of making screen time intentional, and that seems to be at the heart of this idea of 90s parenting.(贾斯汀打造的百视达房间是一种让屏幕时间变得有意义的方式,这似乎是90年代育儿理念的核心)”可知,贾斯汀建这个房间是为了复刻童年家庭共同挑选影片的欢乐时光,提供愉悦的家庭陪伴时间。故选A。 根据第五段中“Scrolling through 90s parenting-themed videos, I’m struck by one video: a group of adults and kids engaging in a back garden water fight (organised via landline), having put all their smartphones in a bowl out of reach.(在浏览 90 年代育儿主题的视频时,有一个视频打动了我:一群大人和孩子把智能手机都放在够不着的碗里,通过固定电话约着在后院打水仗)”可知,这个例子体现了人们放下电子产品,开展真实的家庭互动活动,重视现实生活中的家庭乐趣。 根据第六段中““Parenting in the 90s was basically just ‘slow’ parenting,” says Jes, a former primary school teacher and a big believer in the importance of play. That means not driving kids from activity to activity so days are jam-packed. Boredom is important, says Melanie Murphy, a mother of two from Dublin. “Long periods of unremarkable time were a gift I didn’t know I’d miss, and I want that for my kids. I don’t want to schedule every hour of their lives.”(“90年代的育儿方式基本上都是‘慢节奏育儿’,”杰斯说,他曾是一名小学教师,非常相信玩耍的重要性。 根据最后一段中“I can’t quite seem to shake this feeling of loss, and of wanting to return to a simpler time. Maybe I just need more fun in my life. Time for a water fight, I think. Who’s in?(我似乎无法摆脱这种失落感,渴望回到更简单的时光。也许我的生活需要更多乐趣。我想,是时候来一场打水仗了,谁要加入)”可知,作者认同 90 年代育儿方式带来的简单快乐,对这种育儿方式持赞赏态度。A. C。 D Think of your favorite piece of art — a painting, a song, or a novel — and try to remember why it made such a strong impression on you. Now imagine artificial intelligence created it. The question might seem silly, yet this is the future toward which we are racing. Over the past few years, AI developers have improved the technology’s ability to create art across nearly every field. With AI so rapidly learning to produce art forms previously considered only the domain (领域) of human creativity, it’s important to understand how people view this transformation. Earlier this year we conducted a survey on AI art. The results were striking. Most people held that human art has an emotional depth which machines either can’t or shouldn’t reproduce. Yet they were open to AI-generated art so long as there was an artist involved. We first asked people to name their favorite work of art. Then we asked how they would feel upon learning that their favorite work of art was generated by AI. Responses ranged from shock and anger to enthusiasm: more than 62% said they would like it less, 32% said their feelings wouldn’t change, and nearly 5% said they would like it more. The reactions, however, went deeper. When asked if there is a difference between the emotional value of human and AI art, 81% said yes, reminding us that we seek the human experience in art. We want to know if an artist drew from personal experience or imagination. We stop while reading a book to learn about its author, and we follow the lives of singers and actors. Art, after all, is a way humans communicate. But if great art is forged from human hope, desire, disappointment and sorrow, what does creativity mean in a world with increasingly powerful AI? Are people who use AI artists? We asked this. Thirteen percent said yes, another 13% were unsure, and 31% said no, whereas 42% selected “yes, but only if they are providing significant guidance to the AI; otherwise, no.” These responses cast light on why so many people complain about AI-generated “slop”. What participants are often pointing out is the impersonal, almost meaningless nature of AI. But many of the respondents appeared more open to the idea of people using AI as a tool to help bring their artistic vision into the world. As AI conquers more artistic domains, what people find acceptable may shift. But we do know that people still value art as a means of communication and connection. Taking the pulse of what society thinks about AI art can help connect AI developers not only with artists but with the millions of people who find meaning and connection in art. 27. From the results of the survey on AI art, we can learn that _________. A. humanity will always outperform AI in terms of creativity B human involvement is the key factor shaping opinions on AI art C. acceptance of AI art has gradually changed during its development D. IV. When you think of farming, central Sydney isn’t the first place that comes to mind. But Sydney Urban Green, the city’s first commercial indoor vertical (垂直的) farm, is changing opinions of where and how farms can operate. Located in a basement car park, it specializes in growing microgreens and baby shoots— making efficient use of space while placing food production close to large populations. The unusual business Urban Green was started in early 2020 by former chef Noah Verin. He has an environmental science degree, and has no farming experience at all. The business idea started with Noah and a friend experimenting with a few seeds (种子) and they couldn’t believe the flavor they were able to produce. “I still call them my babies,” he laughs. “I’m sure other farmers would agree that there’s an emotional connection to the produce you’re growing.” His goal is for the company to be carbon neutral (碳中和) by 2030, and his approach includes energy use, growing medium, packaging, and deliveries. Since its start, the company has already increased its energy efficiency by 50% when it replaced 36- watt lights with 18- watt lights. For the plant medium, the company uses a renewable byproduct of the coconut. Currently, Urban Green is in the process of using degradable materials instead of plastic pots. Verin’s customers appreciate his business because his farm is environmentally- friendly and the food is local and fresher. Verin stresses vertical farms won’t replace traditional agriculture but perfect it— such as supplying baby plants or helping sell farm produce to restaurants. Now he is planning to combine his chef and farming careers with a farm that has an attached production kitchen. The plan builds on past experiments, turning extra produce into syrups and sauces. For him, growing things isn’t just business— it’s emotional. 53. Where is Sydney Urban Green located? ____________________________________________________________________________________________ 54. Why do Verin’s customers appreciate his business? ____________________________________________________________________________________________ 55. What is Verin planning now? ____________________________________________________________________________________________ 56. 19. Scrolling online just isn’t the same.” Justin’s Blockbuster room is a way of making screen time intentional and that seems to be at the heart of this idea of 90s parenting. D. Doubtful. D Think of your favorite piece of art — a painting, a song, or a novel — and try to remember why it made such a strong impression on you. But if great art is forged from human hope desire, disappointment and sorrow, what does creativity mean in a world with increasingly powerful AI? A. humanity will always outperform AI in terms of creativity B. human involvement is the key factor shaping opinions on AI art C. acceptance of AI art has gradually changed during its development D. AI connection has a universally negative impact on art appreciation 28. Which of the following best reflects the main point in Paragraph 5? A. Art at its heart is human experience communicated. B. An artist’s job is to translate personal experience into art. C. Learning artists’ stories is the key to appreciating their art. D. AI bridges communication between experience and imagination. 29. The word “forged” underlined in Paragraph 6 most probably means _________. A. released B. separated C. created D. borrowed 30. What can we infer from this passage? A. AI-generated art is not accessible to everyone. B. People are using AI to redefine creativity in art. C AI can serve as a path for human communication. D. People want AI to help artists but not be the artist. 第Ⅱ卷(共65分) I. 选词填空(共7小题;每小题2分,共14分) 用方框中单词的适当形式完成下列句子,每个单词只能用一次。 invite rejection appear enthusiasm astonish rare legally 31.
