Day1 Interactive AI toys bring new possibilities but also concerns
爆火的AI玩具是智商税吗? 词数 403 阅读时间 6分钟
Imagine a cute cat doll that chats with you while showing lively facial expressions, a smart globe that introduces local cultures based on where you tap, or a small robot ready to play Go or Chinese chess.
These creative toys all use artificial intelligence (AI)technologies, and such interactive and responsive "smart companions" are quickly becoming popular with consumers around the world.
According to data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, China's AI toy market is expected to be worth 29 billion yuan this year. Western brands like Mattel and OpenAI are also expected to launch AI products for kids.
Experts and business leaders say AI toys, created to provide emotional support and companionship, are well placed to drive the next wave of consumer trends by using advanced technologies to build emotional links with consumers.
"Young consumers are increasingly paying for emotional value, and AI companionship is emerging as a key early use case," Sun Zhaozhi, founder and CEO of Shanghai-based AI-driven toy start-up Robopoet, told China Daily.
Beyond emotional support, AI toys may also affect the way kids grow up. They promise every child a kind of upbringing that was once only available to rich families, with private tutors, personalized syllabuses and custom-made entertainment, reported The Economist.
However, there are risks. AI may influence vulnerable people and children to harm themselves. For example, Singapore-based FoloToy's "Kumma" bear, powered by OpenAI's GPT-4o, told researchers where to find potentially dangerous objects.
Similar concerns have been raised about AI toys, which could potentially store personal data, according to Azhelle Wade, founder of The Toy Coach, a consulting firm. "AI toys feel like a wolf in sheep's clothing to me, because when using them it's hard to tell how much privacy you don't have," she told CNN.
AI may also reinforce echo chambers, where people see only content they agree with. A favorites-only diet means a person never needs to learn to accept something unfamiliar. AI companions that never criticize or share their own feelings may leave people unprepared for dealing with real human beings.
Because of this, some basic protective measures are urgently needed. These could include stricter age restrictions on chatbots and tighter rules for AI companies. At the same time, parents should think carefully before trusting their children to a machine that only tells them what they already agree with.

Day2 A chemistry professor explains how soap keeps your hands clean
肥皂的清洁“魔法” 词数 350 阅读时间 6分钟
Although billions of people use soap every day, most of us don't know how it works. As a professor of chemistry, I can explain the science of soap - and why you should listen to your mom when she tells you to wash up.
Water, scientifically written as H O, is required for all life on our planet. Chemists call molecules that are attracted to water hydrophilic, which means water-loving. These molecules can dissolve in water. So if you were to wash your hands under a running faucet without using soap, you'd probably get rid of lots of the hydrophilic bits that are stuck to your skin.
On the opposite side are hydrophobic, or water-fearing, molecules, which do not dissolve in water. One example is oil. Oil and water just don't mix, so water alone is not enough to wash off oil completely.
The soap molecule, however, is both. Shaped like a tadpole, it has a round, hydrophilic head and a long, hydrophobic tail. This not only makes soap slippery, but also gives it the cleaning superpower.
Think about all the things that make your hands dirty during the day, like food smears, mud, sweat and oils. This is a mix of water-loving and water-fearing materials. Dust and dead skin cells "like" water, while natural oils don't, for example.
When soap molecules come together on your hands, they form a micelle structure, with water-loving heads on the surface and water-fearing tails inside the micelle. This structure traps the dirt, and running water washes it all away.
To get the full effect, wash your hands for at least 20 seconds. Rubbing your hands together helps force the soap molecules into whatever dirt is there to break it up and trap it.
Besides dirt, your body is also covered by microorganisms, such as bacteria. Some of them can cause illness and make you smell if you haven't taken a shower in a while. These microorganisms are protected by a membrane. Soap and water can break this membrane, causing the microorganism to burst open. The water then washes the remains of the microorganism away, along with the smell.
Paul E. Richardson, professor at Coastal Carolina University, US
How did people find soap
According to Richardson, the legend goes that thousands of years ago, fat from someone's meal fell into the ashes of a fire. Our ancestors then discovered that the mixing of fat and ashes formed a material that cleaned things.
However it really happened, the discovery of soap dates back around 5,000 years, to the ancient city of Babylon in today's Iraq. As time passed, people around the world began to use soap. During the 1600s, it was a common item in the Americas, often made at home. In 1791, Nicholas Leblanc, a French chemist, patented the first soapmaking process. Today, the world spends about $50 billion (around 355 billion yuan) every year on bath, kitchen and laundry soap.

Day3 Delivery riders face constant pressure at work
滤镜之外:我们该如何真正看见骑手? 词数 320 阅读时间 5分钟
A heated debate followed a recent Meituan delivery advertisement that showed a female rider named A Lan balancing her passion for photography with her demanding job in Yunnan. The ad was widely criticized for romanticizing the harsh realities of delivery riders' lives and was taken offline within a day.
In the video, A Lan wears a perfect uniform, saves enough money for a 15,000-yuan camera in just three months, and even holds a photo exhibition. The ad struck many viewers as unrealistic, as it sharply contrasted with the reality faced by China's 10 million delivery riders, who race against tight deadlines, work long hours with little rest, and constantly balance speed and safety. Growing public awareness of riders' working conditions, fueled by social media, has made people more sensitive to content that ignores these realities.
There is, however, a silver lining. To protect riders' rights, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security has issued a series of guidelines that clarify minimum hourly wages, set limits on daily working hours, and require platforms to make rules - such as order allocation and salary payments - more transparent. New national standards for the food delivery industry also require platforms to remind workers to take short breaks after four hours of work.
Platforms are taking action as well. In February, JD.com announced it would provide full-time food delivery riders with comprehensive social insurance and housing funds. Meituan has also launched a nationwide pension subsidy program, covering 50 percent of insurance costs for riders. Platforms have also begun pilot programs to end cash fines for late deliveries. These measures have brought real benefits to workers.
The discussion around the ad reminds us of the challenges gig workers continue to face. If the government, platforms and society work together to address these problems, the overly perfect picture of riders' lives - now questioned by the public - may one day become reality.

Day 4 A home in two places 词数 369 建议阅读时间 6分钟
When I flew back to school from Colorado to start my sophomore year, my sister cried beside me on the plane. As we looked over the Pacific, she said, "I just realized how far away you are." Being 1,000 miles from home can feel overwhelming, even when my family is just a phone call away.
I always dreamed of going out of state for college, but I underestimated the loneliness, especially at a school where only 4.64 percent of the students are from out of state. I'm incredibly lucky to be here. I did the "right" things, worked hard and got myself to a great school in a beautiful place, so why do I just want to go home?
It was not until the middle of my sophomore year that I realized being unhappy is a possibility and a reality. It doesn't mean you can't handle challenges. It just means that you're experiencing life.
Living independently has transformed me in many ways. I've become more resourceful and outgoing. I've made family out of friends to combat the family I miss back at home. The "old me", who once cried from nerves before my first cross-country practice, would be proud to see how I've pushed myself to join new clubs and try new things entirely on my own.
I've also learned how to get through the tough times by calling my loved ones, spending time with friends and enjoying the culture shock of California. I'm not walking on sunshine all the time while I'm here, but frequent belly laughs with my friends make me pause and realize that I'm going to be fine.
Most importantly, I've learned that it's completely normal to feel down sometimes. And the moments of intense homesickness just prove that I am experiencing growth.
College is tough for everyone, no matter where you come from. Nevertheless, this experience has taught me how to stand on my own and how to make a home out of two places.
