Every Sunday, the air in Grandpa’s old house was always filled with the sweet smell of apple pie. But last Sunday was different—the smell was gone. Mom met me at the door with a smile and said, “Mary, your grandpa wants to teach you to make apple pie today.”
I followed Mom to the kitchen. On the table, there were apples, milk, sugar and other ingredients (配料). I saw Grandpa standing beside the table. He was always such a strict man, so I was a little nervous.
“Today, you’ll learn,” he said, and then he showed me how to make the crust. “Use milk, not water. It’s the secret to a nice crust,” he told me. I tried to follow, but soon I found it so difficult—my first try was too dry, and the next had far too much milk. But Grandpa just taught me patiently all over again as I kept trying.
As we worked, Grandpa shared stories about his life on a farm. His mother taught him to make apple pies when he was my age. There was an apple tree in their yard. Every autumn, the whole family picked red apples and made apple pies together. “Those were some of my happiest memories,” he said.
With Grandpa’s help, I finished making the apple pie. As soon as I took the pie out, it smelled so amazing.
I served the pie to my family. “It tastes (尝) just like Grandpa’s! I love it!” Dad said excitedly. But I realized that this apple pie is unusual—it carries on our family tradition, and it’s also our way of connecting.

A forest is like a busy “home”—all animals and plants help one another. But what about a tree itself—is it busy too? The answer might surprise you: Yes! A tree is busy in ways you cannot see.
Earlier this month, a group of scientists (科学家) did a study to find the small “workers” hiding in trees. They found just how full of life a tree can be!
Let’s take a look at how they did the study. They selected (选择) over 150 trees from 16 different kinds. Then, they cut thin pieces from these trees. Next, they broke the pieces into small ones to get DNA. This helped them see how many of those small “workers” there were.
Now, their big findings (发现)! First, a tree is home to a large number of small “workers”. They live in two parts: the outer (外部的) part and the inner (内部的) part. Second, the “workers” in the outer part need air to do their jobs, but those in the inner part do not need air. Third, different trees have their own unusual “workers”. For example, sugar maples have more “workers” that like to eat sugar.
Jonathan Gewirtzman, a nature scientist from Yale University, said, “One tree is like a whole busy ‘home’ by itself!” He thinks these “workers” help trees stay healthy and grow strong.
But there’s something we don’t know—how all these “workers” get into trees. Some may come from seeds, and others in ways we haven’t found out. Frederique Reverchon, a scientist who didn’t take part in the study, said, “This work is a great start. It lets us learn more about the unknown busy life of a tree!”
27. Why did the scientists do the study on trees earlier this month?
A. To see busy lives of forests. B. To build a busy “home” for plants.
C. To get DNA from tree pieces. D. To find the small “workers” in trees.
28. What can we learn from the big findings in Paragraph 4?
A. Those small “workers” live in one part.
B. Different trees have different “workers”.
C. Sugar maples are home to sugar-making animals.
D. Inner “workers” need more air than outer “workers”.
29. What could be the best title for the passage?
A. A great start for seeds B. The busy life of a tree
C. An interesting study on forests D. Ways of “workers” getting into trees
【答案】27. D 28. B 29. B

D
We often see our pets eat grass, but scientists say it is usually not because they feel ill. There are many different ideas about why our pets do this.
A traditional idea thinks pets eat grass when their stomachs (胃) hurt, but research shows this idea is wrong. The team of Research 1 in 2008 asked 1,571 dog keepers and found 68% of their dogs ate grass every day or every week, but only 8%of the keepers said the dogs looked ill first. Research 2 in 2021 studied cats and found only 6% and 9% of the cats in two different groups looked ill before eating grass. Research 1 and 2 tell us that illness is not the big reason (原因) why pets eat grass.
Another idea is that grass is like a natural “broom” (扫帚) to sweep hairballs out of a cat’s stomach. Though long-haired cats have more hairballs, studies show they do not eat more grass than short-haired cats. So, cats don’t eat grass just because they eat a lot of hair.
Also, wild (野生的) animals such as wolves eat grass too, because they want to remove worms from their bodies. But most home pets do not have worms, so this reason isn’t true for them.
Today, scientists have a more popular idea: grass- eating is just a hobby for pets—like children playing with a ball. Pets don’t feed on grass, but they may like its taste or enjoy exploring. If the grass is clean and your pet looks healthy, you don’t need to worry.
But some plants are not safe for pets. So if your pet vomits (呕吐) a lot after eating grass, you should take it to the animal doctor.
30. What do Research 1 and 2 tell us?
A. Pet dogs and cats fall ill after eating grass.
B. Dog keepers never watch their pets eat grass.
C. Most pets eat grass when their stomachs hurt.
D. Being ill is not the big reason for pets to eat grass.
31. What does the word “remove” in Paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A. 除去 B. 吃掉 C. 传递 D. 混合
32. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Pets like playing balls with children.
B. Home pets without worms never eat grass.
C. Pet dogs and cats may eat grass just for fun.
D. Long-haired cats eat more grass for more hairballs.
33. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To give the advice on safe plants for pets.
B. To talk about the problems of eating grass.
C To introduce different ideas about why pets eat grass.
D. To explore different ways to stop pets from eating grass.
【答案】30. D 31. A 32. C 33. C

Knitting: Not Just for Grandma Anymore!
Have you ever watched your grandma knit? It might seem like an out-of-date (过时的) hobby, but guess what? Knitting is becoming popular again with young people because they’re looking for ways to stay away from busy life. In fact, knitting is more than just a hobby. Studies show that slow activities (活动) like knitting help the brain (脑) in many ways.
A useful brain activity
Knitting makes different parts of the brain work. It helps us remember things better, keep our mind on what we’re doing, and move our hands nicely. It’s like when we play a video game: our mind, eyes, and hands all work together, and we also have to plan and think as we knit. So knitting can make us much more clever!
A happy feeling that grows slowly
In 2024, a study showed that knitting can make the “happy part” of the brain much busier. As a result, we feel happier and less lonely. Unlike the quick happiness from looking through phones or eating sweets, knitting brings a happy feeling that grows slowly, but it is deeper and lasts much longer.
A new challenge for the brain
The key to getting the most from knitting is to learn something new. If you’ve never knitted before, starting now is good for your brain. But if you’ve been good at it, try a new challenge—like a cool pattern (图案). When we try new things, our brain builds new connections. This keeps our brain healthy.
Now, you can sit with friends, and learn knitting together. You can share useful advice on how to make better knitted works, and make gifts for each other. Let’s start knitting now.
34. Why is knitting becoming popular again with young people?

As we worked Grandpa shared stories about his life on a farm.
24. How did the writer feel when she saw Grandpa standing beside the table?
A. Nervous. B. Excited. C. Angry. D. Peaceful.
25. What did Grandpa do when the writer found it difficult to make the crust?
A. He tried to put more water. B. He asked his mother for help.
C. He left the kitchen with the writer. D. He taught the writer patiently again.
26. What did the writer realize from making apple pie?
A. Making apple pie needs much practice.
B. The writer’s pie tastes the same as Grandpa’s.
C. This apple pie stands for family tradition and connection.
D. The whole family members are good at making apple pie.
C
Though long-haired cats have more hairballs studies show they do not eat more grass than short-haired cats.
