As freshman, you might find that difficult to find your way in the college, so we will take you on a quick tour. The college used to have four departments, english, french, german and russian, but now there is a chinese department as well. And we are going to set up a spanish department soon. At the moment, we are outside the english department. In the english department, there are over two hundred students, thirty students in each class. We have fifty teachers, including twenty professors in this department. The teachers are all from different places, mainly from the U. S. A. And australia, with a few from england and canada. All of your classes will be here in this building. In the french department, there are over one hundred and fifty students and forty teachers, mainly from france and canada. In the russian department, we have more than one hundred and twenty students and twenty eight teachers from russia. Now let's walk over to the main library, which is the largest building in the college. But I must remind you that this tour doesn't include a visit to the reading room. There are many students on weekdays. They need quiet. I am afraid we don't do visits on any weekday during working hours. If you do want to see these rooms, the only day there are tours is on sundays, because the library is closed for maintenance on saturday. New year, new you... at least that’s the plan, right? We all start January with big intentions, but actually sticking to those shiny New Year’s resolutions is a different story. Luckily, there’s an app for that—actually, there are loads!
AlITrails
AllTrails is a great exercise app as it encourages you to get out into nature instead of hitting up an overpriced gym. With detailed trail maps that guide you through numerous outdoor activities, you’ll be working up a sweat in no time while taking advantage of natural beauty!
Rocket Money
Cutting back on spending is the most popular New Year’s resolution globally, every year. This user-friendly app simplifies everything that comes along with budgeting and expense tracking, while also helping you manage subscriptions and bills. With features like automated bill negotiation and credit score monitoring, you can think of Rocket Money as your personal financial assistant.
Imprint
Want to cut doom-scrolling but not ready to drop your phone? Imprint is here to help. The app takes big ideas from the world’s greatest thinkers and breaks them down into simple, visual snippets that you can actually remember. Whether you want to master essential topics, or just have a few fun facts to throw into your conversations, Imprint makes learning quick, and easy!
Duolingo
This language app really is one of the best for sticking to your goals. From the way it gamifies your progress to the user-friendly interface, Duolingo makes leaning a new language both easy and enjoyable! There’s just one major setback for Hong Kongers: the app only offers Cantonese lessons for Mandarin speakers, so if you’re hoping to pick up some of the local language, you’ll have to look elsewhere.

In April 2022, Uday Bhatia, a student from Delhi, India, visited Bichpuri as a volunteer for a 2-day programme. During his stay, he found that the biggest problem the local children faced was repeated power cuts, which made it difficult for them to study. That left a deep impact on Uday.
Uday came back to Delhi and took immediate action to approach the problem. He soon understood that residents of villages like Bichpuri couldn’t afford electrical devices. He wanted to find and develop a solution to rural India’s power shortage. After 24 attempts, the 18-year-old built the solution — Uday Electric — a bulb that can offer a power backup (备用) of almost 10 hours in case of a power cut.
Explaining how the bulb works, Uday states that the technology used is very simple. “When the bulb is connected to a power source, energy gets stored in the battery. When the power supply is cut off, the bulb uses the energy stored in the battery to give out light,” he explains.
At first, he established a bulb with a four-hour backup. But he wanted to provide a backup of 8-10 hours. Thanks to his love of computer science, he developed a way to change the bulb’s brightness, increasing the backup time without increasing the size of the battery. The bulb now comes with settings 1o change the brightness.
Uday sold each bulb at only 250 rupees (3 dollars) and has so far sold over 7,000 units in many remote villages. But what Uday did went beyond business; he donated 950 units to houses in the poorest areas through a non-governmental organisation, bringing joy to those living without electricity. “When I saw the joy on people’s faces when their houses were lit up, I felt on top of the world. No feeling could come close to it,” says Uday.
Uday won the Diana Award 2023, which honours “remarkable young people selflessly creating positive social change”. He wishes to bring bulb to as many houses as he can in the coming years.
24.What inspired Uday to invent Uday Electric?
A.An experiment he did at school. B.A volunteering experience.
C.His interest in computer science. D.The power cuts he faced every day.
25.What do we know about Uday Electric?
A.It is small and solar-powered. B.It just can’t adjust the brightness.
C.It can work without batteries. D.It is affordable and effective.
26.Which of the following words can best describe Uday?
A.Honest and confident. B.Humorous and generous.
C.Determined and warm-hearted. D.Outgoing and independent.
27.What is the best title for the text?
A.Teen’s bright idea lights rural India
B.A solution to end India’s power shortage
C.A young Indian changemaker giving back
D.The inspiring journey of a teenage Indian’s success

We know that some animals live longer than others, but we do not yet fully understand why. Researchers have previously identified brain size and metabolic (新陈代谢) rates as factors that can vary lifespan, but now evolutionary researchers from the UK’s University of Bath have found another factor, and it’s one that could be key to understanding why cats tend to live longer than dogs.
“Our study reveals the surprising role played by the immune system-not just in fighting disease, but also in supporting longevity across a wide range of mammals,” says Benjamin from the University of Bath’s Centre for Evolution.
The research does not dismiss the other reasons, rather suggesting longevity is a combination of factors. The researchers investigated the maximum lifespan of 46 different mammalian species, comparing the animals’ genes. The team studied dolphins, which can live for up to 39 years, and other whales that live for up to 100 years, but they also looked into smaller animals such as mice, which typically live for only one to two years.
The results showed that certain small animals live longer than expected, such as naked mole rats, which can live 20 years despite a small size and brain.
The species that live the longest had more genes associated with their immune system, according to the researchers; the team believes that a strong immune system acts to eliminate damaged cells, while also fighting infections and preventing disease. Cats are gifted with a strong natural immunity through a diverse set of immune-related genes, whereas the selective breeding of dogs has left some breeds with inherited immune deficiencies (缺陷).
The researchers now intend to look deeper into significant differences in the lifespans of different mammals by investigating specific genes that relate to cancer and other life-shortening diseases.
28.How does the author present the issue in the first paragraph?
A.By quoting an expert. B.By defining a concept.
C.By comparing findings. D.By providing statistics.
29.What did the University of Bath researchers focus on?
A.Daily eating habits. B.Living environments.
C.Genetic characteristics. D.Reproductive patterns.
30.Why does the author mention naked mole rats?
A.To compare their lifespan with that of mice.
B.To explain why small animals live shorter lives.
C.To show naked mole rats have the longest lifespan.
D.To prove size and brain size don’t determine lifespan.
31.What is the researchers’ next plan?
A.To study the immune system of cats and dogs.
B.To explore genes associated with severe diseases.
C.To confirm the role of metabolic rates in lifespan.
D.To investigate the effect of breeding on immunity.

Animal products could produce electricity, one British power company warns — and to give consumers a choice, it’s offering what it calls the world’s first vegan electricity.
Ecotricity, a renewable energy provider in the U.K. , announced its electricity and gas would be certified vegan after it claimed half of British homes are powered by electricity made from animal byproducts. Company founder Dale Vince accused companies that consider themselves “ ethical” or “green” of keeping consumers in the dark about their “secret ingredient.” “We need clear labeling of energy sourcing so that people can make informed choices,” he said in a statement.
The company offers “vegan energy” in wind and solar power, and it’s developing “sea power” produced by wave oscillation and marine currents. None of Ecotricity’s electrical sources contains animal byproducts that the company knew of before it made the announcement, but it registered with the Vegan Society to certify its green status.
Though not widely open, it’s fairly common for power companies to get electricity from animals through anaerobic digestion (厌氧消化). Animal waste is generally considered a clean, renewable energy source. Turning manure (肥料) into fuel eliminates a sizeable chunk of carbon pollution and lessens power companies’ reliance on “dirtier” fossil fuels like coal and oil. Plus, animals provide a limitless supply of waste, while Earth’s natural gas stores are finite, so crackers wouldn’t need to drill into rock to extract it.
Cows are pictured at a Wagyu cattle breeding center in June in Petit-Mars, France. A U.K. energy company announced the first “vegan electricity” after warning consumers about animal byproducts in energy production,
After anaerobic digestion, farmers can use the liquid remains of the manure as fertilizer and make chips for animal bedding from the solid leftovers, chemical engineer DavidSimakov told Popular Science.
“We are talking about producing the amount of renewable natural gas enough to heat thousands of homes from just a single large landfill site,” he said. “We need to stop pumping carbon from underground into the atmosphere and start caring about introducing more and more renewable energy to make our lives more sustainable.”
Renewable energy only accounts for 11 percent of energy consumption in the U. S. , according to the Energy Information Administration. Fossil fuels and nuclear energy generate more than 80 percent of the country’s electricity, and that’s unlikely to change: like other clean energy sources, anacrobic digestion is still more expensive than traditional sources of energy.
32.According to Dale Vince, ____________.
A.vegan electricity and gas shouldn’t use animal byproducts
B.it’s not certain whether Ecotricity has used animal byproducts
C.it’s necessary for consumers to know how electricity is produced
D.people don’t need to make choices of whether to use vegan electricity
33.In Paragraph 2, “secret ingredient” refers to ____________.
A.animal waste B.vegan energy C.an energy provider D.energy labeling
34.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.It’s forbidden to get exploited natural gas since it is limited.
B.Clean energy may not replace fossil fuels to be used by families.
C.Power companies can rely on animal waste to produce clean energy.
D.The waste of cows is first used to produce clean energy in the world.
35.What does the author think of clean energy?
A.It has been a mainstream.
B.It has a promising future.
C.Consumers tend to use more clean energy now.
D.Its producing cost has decreased its popularity.

As a result of trade, travel and migration, different cuisines have spread across the world. Many recipes, chefs and restaurants try to claim that their example of a particular cooking tradition is the most authentic (地道的). 36
People care about authenticity because food traditions are closely linked to identity. 37 There home cooking is often the last way to show their identity, British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver was accused of trying to take advantage of positive feelings about Jamaica. His meal product had a Jamaican name, but was unlike genuine Jamaican cooking.
However, food consultant Sara Kay argues that there are problems with the idea of authenticity. 38 It’s common for majority cultures to have wild fantasies about minority cultures and their food. These expectations can be restricting — restaurant owners have complained that people expect Asian food to be cheaper than that from European cultures.
39 while large cities are full of restaurants representing different countries — China, India, Italy, Mexico and more — these labels can oversimplify the reality of food from these countries. For instance, regional specialties in Mexico are assumed quite different from what people eat in America. But in essence, they can both be authentic examples of Mexican food.
A more controversial view of authenticity was stated by American Chef Andrew Zimmern, who claimed that he could present Chinese dishes in a more authentic way than existing restaurants. Writer and food podcaster Ruth Tam points out that while these restaurants change their recipes to suit local tastes. so does Zimmern. 40 So, while food and identity are closely linked, it makes sense to give a second thought about the whole idea of authenticity.
A.But is this a good thing?
B.It’s a symbol of cultural diversity,
C.That means adaptation is unavoidable.
D.They can generate severe consequences.
E.And unreasonable expectations are the core.
F.It’s particularly true for migrant communities.
G.Expectations can also give a false idea of authenticity.

第二节(满分25分)
The ancient oak tree in the school courtyard served as the traditional “memories bank”. On the final day of senior year, students gathered to bury time capsules - letters to their future selves. Mia stood among them, clutching her sealed envelope with a heavy heart. Unlike others filled with hopes and dreams, hers contained a painful confession (忏悔) she had carried for three long years.
Her mind flashed back to the science lab, where her curiosity had led to disaster. Reaching for the school’s antique microscope, she accidentally knocked it from the table. It broke into two parts. She quickly picked them up and put them together. At this moment, the door opened revealing Ben, a quiet classmate, with Mr. Davies behind him. Ben came to fetch the microscope for an experiment. Hardly had he touched the microscope when it split into two parts.
To Mia’s astonishment, Ben quietly claimed responsibility. “I was moving it and it slipped,” he murmured, accepting the teacher’s disappointment that should have been hers. Mia watched in guilty silence as he bore the blame she deserved.
Now, watching Ben place his own letter in the hole and offer her a sad smile, Mia held the envelope tightly in her hand. The breeze rustled the oak leaves like whispering voices. She looked from the freshly dug earth to Ben’s figure, wondering if burying her truth was truly how she wanted to end her high school story.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150词左右;2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Just as the dirt was about to cover the capsules, Mia suddenly stepped forward. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

67.Just as the dirt was about to cover the capsules,Mia suddenly stepped forward. She raised
her hand to stop the others, her eyes fixed on Ben.With a shaky voice, she told the story of the
science lab incident-how she'd knocked over the antique microscope, how Ben had silently
taken the blame, and the guilt that had haunted her ever since. As she spoke, her gaze never left
Ben's,and tears glistened in her eyes. The courtyard grew quiet, with only the rustle of oak leaves
accompany ing her words.
After telling the truth,Mia felt a light tap on her shoulder. She turned to see Ben,his previous
sadness replaced by a calm expression."I've waited three years to hear you say that,"he said
softly.Mia felt the weight in her chest lift instantly,a wave of relief washing over her.She smiled
back at Ben,then bent down to place her envelope into the hole-no longer carrying regret, but
the peace of finally telling the truth.
