Lightning (闪电) is shocking, and it happens all over the world! Scientists think that there are more than three million lightning strikes (袭击) every day in the world—that’s thirty strikes every second.
Lightning can also be very dangerous. Every year, lightning kills people because it can start big fires or because it makes temperatures reach up to 28,000 degrees centigrade (摄氏度). American Roy Sullivan, who worked in a park, holds the record for surviving the most lightning strikes. Between 1942 and 1983, he was hit seven times!
So, why does lightning strike? Lightning strikes happen when ice and water in clouds rub (摩擦) together, and cause atmospheric (大气层的) changes. When this happens, it creates a static charge (静电荷). Lightning can strike inside the cloud, between two clouds and between a cloud and the earth. It’s the last type of strike that is the most dangerous for humans. About 1,000 people get struck by lightning every year in the United States, and about 100 of them die as a result.
Lightning is certainly not something to play with. When lightning strikes, it’s best to stay inside a large building. To stay safe, do not stand under trees, on hills or near water. Trees attract lightning. Also, do not lie down on the ground; otherwise the electricity may go through you and cause a heart attack.
36.Lightning strikes ________.
A.happen three billion times each day B.will start when there are big fires
C.can reach very high temperatures D.kill all those who work in a park
37.What does the underlined word “surviving” in Paragraph 2 mean in Chinese?
A.目睹 B.幸存 C.制造 D.遇难
38.We can infer from Paragraph 3 that ________.
A.lightning strikes are caused whenever ice and water meet
B.lightning between two clouds is the most dangerous for humans
C.lightning strikes can’t create a static charge
D.about one tenth of the people struck by lightning die every year in America
39.Where’s the best place to be when lightning strikes?
A.On the top of a hill. B.In a swimming pool. C.Under a tree. D.Inside a large building.
40.What does this passage mainly talk about?
A.The introduction of lightning. B.Protecting ourselves from lightning.
C.Lightning is dangerous. D.The reasons for lightning.

Dark matter (暗物质) is found everywhere in the universe. However, no matter how hard you look for it, you’ll never see it. It doesn’t reflect or produce light, so human eyes and most scientific instruments can’t find it. This makes it very hard to study.
Why is it very important? Studies show that common matter makes up only a small part of the universe we know. It includes you, your dog, the earth, the sun, stars, and planets. But dark matter in the universe is five times as much as common matter.
Scientists discover dark matter the same way they find other things we can’t see—by watching how they influence things we can see. Think of the wind: we can’t see it, but we know it’s there by watching trees. Dark matter has gravity (引力). It’s like common matter, which can attract (吸引) everything around it.
Recently, some scientists have created maps of dark matter. To make these maps, they watch light coming from the universe. One group has watched the sky for nine years. By studying how the light changed directions when it traveled through space, scientists could map where dark matter was and what shape it had.
One of the new maps shows an area of dark matter. To our eyes, this area is more than 600 times the size of the full moon in the sky. But that’s just the beginning: The scientists plan to do further studies to better understand more groups of dark matter and hope to study the whole sky in 10 years or so.
根据短文内容,判断下列句子正 (T)、误 (F)。
46.Human eyes can’t see dark matter because it doesn’t reflect or produce light.
47.Studies show that common matter in the universe is five times as much as dark matter.
48.Scientists discover dark matter by watching how it influences things we can see.
49.A group of scientists has watched the sky for nineteen years to make dark matter maps.
50.Some scientists plan to study more dark matter groups and hope to study the whole sky.

It was early morning. Peter Corbett helped Mark Wellman out of his wheelchair (轮椅) and onto the ground. They stood before El Capitan, a huge rock almost 1.2 kilometers high. Mark dreamed to climb El Capitan when he was a child. At the age of 21, he fell while climbing a mountain and lost his legs. But he never lost his love for life.
Mark knew he couldn’t finish the climb alone, but his friend Peter would be there to give a helping hand. They thought it would take seven days to reach the top. Now Peter Corbett climbed about 30 meters up and hit a piton (岩钉) into the rock. Fastening (拴紧) one end of a 50 meter rope to the piton, he let the other end of the rope fall down. Mark caught the rope and fastened it to his belt. He next reached above his head and fastened a T bar (丁字铁) to the rope. Mark took a deep breath, pushed the T bar up almost as far as his arms could reach, and began the first pull up. High above, Peter let out a cheer. You’re on your way.
For the first four days the two men progressed upward (向上) without accident. But on the fifth day, a very strong wind began to blow, making it hard for Mark to hold on to his rope. But Mark kept on pushing up the T bar and pulling himself up.
It took them one day more than they had expected. But as the two heads appeared, the group of people waiting on the top went wild with joy.
Mark Wellman showed that if you set your heart and mind on something, no wall is too high, no dream is impossible.

Everybody Can Be a Winner
A winner’s attitude: it may be difficult but it is possible. Let me share my story.
In the path of life, we often encounter various difficulties. Some people choose to give up, while others choose to face and overcome difficulties. I remember when I was in the third grade of elementary school, my teacher asked me to participate in the rope skipping competition. Because I was not good at rope skipping, I wanted to give up this opportunity. But both my teacher and mother encouraged me to participate in this competition. Then I practiced skipping rope every morning and evening. I jumped faster and faster. On the day of the competition, I won the first prize. From then on, when I encounter difficulties, I always tell myself that I must face them bravely and strive to overcome them in order to achieve success.
Do you want to be a winner? Just remember: it may be difficult but it is possible. If you face it and overcome it, you will be a winner.

David: OK, there are enough onions in this packet. Now let’s go find the tuna.
