Blow, seven o’clock.
The sharp voice comes from Peter Beamish, the scientist who owns the boat. Fourteen heads turn, and we spot a whale’s spray below the dark grey cliffs.
Beamish shifts the engines into gear, and the boat speeds toward the spray. A large circular patch of water widens nearby. “That’s where she dived. She’ll surface in two minutes,” Beamish says again. He studies animal communication, focusing on whales along the Newfoundland coast, where he runs a scientific inn. Tourists like us fund his research through these trips.
Minutes pass, and I hear the whale’s blow close by-like a sudden burst of steam from a giant engine. In the open sea, the whale rises, its black, glistening sides forming a smooth curve like an upturned ship.
“She’s going to dive. Wait for the tail,” Beamish says.
The whale drifts left, its back arching slowly. Then the unforgettable sight: its tail unfolds in slow motion, massive flukes (尾鳍) pouring water and light. It pauses, then slips down, disappearing into the sea with foaming waves and bubbles.
“That was Barbara,” Beamish says, naming each whale. “A 40-foot female, 7-15 years old. She came from the Caribbean last month with the herd.”
Seeing a whale surface beside our small boat is an experience no TV documentary can match. It’s not just the whale’s size, power, or grace — it’s the sense of a slower, more steady rhythm of life, unlike our hurried human pace.
4. What role did Peter Beamish play on the trip?
A. A coach. B. A sightseer. C. A funder. D. A guide.
5. How does the author think of the whale’s blow and dive?
A. Striking. B. Dangerous. C. Terrifying. D. Instructive.
6. What can we learn about the writer from the last paragraph?
A. He senses the overwhelming power of time.
B. He is scared by the whale’s size and power.
C. He feels a more natural and slower pace of life.
D. He finds whales on TV documentaries more thrilling.
7. What is the text mainly about?
A. The mystery of the whale. B. The magic of whale watching.
C. Sailing around with a scientist. D. Going on a scientific trip.
C
The Painting Fool is one of a growing number of computer programs which are claimed to have creative talents. But human beings are often thought to be the only species to perform creative acts regularly. If this process is broken down into computer code, where does that leave human creativity?
Indeed, we are all familiar with computerized art. Aaron, one of the oldest machine artists, can pick up a paintbrush and paint on its own. Impressive perhaps, but it is still little more than a tool to realize the programmer’s own creative ideas.
Simon Colton, the designer of the Painting Fool, is keen to make sure his creation doesn’t attract the same criticism. Unlike earlier machine artists such as Aaron, the Painting Fool only needs a little direction and can come up with its own ideas by running its own web searches to search for necessary materials. It is now beginning to display a kind of imagination too. One of its original works is a series of fuzzy (模模糊糊的) landscapes of trees and the sky. While some might say they have a mechanical (呆板的,机械的) look, Colton argues that such reactions arise from people’s double standards towards software-produced and human-produced art. After all, he says, the Painting Fool painted the landscapes without referring to a photo. “If a child painted a new scene from its head, you’d say it has a certain level of imagination,” he points out. “The same should be true of a machine.”
Where does this prejudice come from? Colton thinks that when people experience art, they wonder what the artist might have been thinking or what the artist is trying to tell them. It seems obvious, therefore, that with computers producing art, this thinking is cut short — there’s nothing to explore. But as technology becomes increasingly complex, finding those greater depths in computer art could become possible. This is why Colton asks the Painting Fool to tap into online social networks for its inspiration: hopefully, this way it will choose themes that will already be meaningful to us.
8. In which way is the Painting Fool different from Aaron?
A. It paints with a paintbrush. B. It searches for inspiration online.
C. It realizes the designer’s ideas. D. It is full of imagination.
9. Which belief does “this prejudice” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Computerized artworks are mindless. B. Software-produced art is faultless.
C. Artificial artists are good for nothing. D. The Painting Fool has a mechanical look.
10. What’s the author’s attitude to the future of the Painting Fool?
A. Doubtful. B. Unclear. C. Intolerant. D. Positive.
11. What is the best title of the text?
A. Aaron: Ready to be Upgraded. B. Art: By Human or By Software.
C. The Painting Fool: An Artificial Artist. D. Colton: Mixing Art and Technology.
D
Vacations are being redefined to improve your wellness experiences. The new buzzword is “sleep tourism” and the focus is on ensuring that you rest well at night and actually return from your vacation feeling refreshed.
When away, vacationers traditionally like to make use of every second of the day. They rush from site to site, eat meals at all hours of the day, and treat themselves at night. And when finally returning to their hotel rooms at night, they find it hard to sleep. Besides, downtown hotels may be centrally located, with noisy traffic and flashing city lights pervading (弥漫). Also, many people simply do not sleep well when away from their own beds. All these factors lead to pain, allergies and hormonal issues, making sleep challenging.
“Sleep tourism” addresses these issues and more. Special sleep suites have been thoughtfully designed to offer quiet and darkness. Hotels are investing in artificial intelligence mattresses (床垫) that adjust temperature and have cushions to relieve pressure points. The mattresses can also track sleep statistics and offer vacationers feedback on their sleep patterns.
Sleep suites are a huge advance in tourism and are now found in wellness hotels around the world. Each offers different ways of inducing sleep, according to Condé Nast Traveler. Many provide a menu of relaxing teas and a tailored bed. No matter which sleep suite you choose, the goal is to sleep well so you can improve your health and well-being. Sinking into a comfortable bed should be the best part of a trip!
The hope is that more hotels adapt to this wellness trend and return to the original purpose of a hotel room, which is sleep! Now you can tour around by day and have sweet dreams by night.
12. According to the text, what is the new trend in vacationing?
A. Partying all night. B. Eating at special hours.
C. Sleeping well on holiday. D. Rushing from site to site.
13. How do sleep suites improve the sleep experience for guests?
A. By serving a wide variety of food.
B. By introducing mattresses with AI technology.
C. By offering in-room entertainment systems.
D. By ensuring complete darkness in the rooms.
14. The underlined word “inducing” in Paragraph 4 probably means “________”.
A. promoting. B. preventing. C. causing. D. affecting.
15. What can we infer about the future of hotels from the passage?
A. All hotels will have artificial intelligence mattresses.
B. Traditional hotels will disappear because of “sleep tourism”.
C. More hotels will focus on providing better sleep experiences.
D. Downtown hotels will move to quieter areas to avoid traffic noise.

When 16-year-old Li Wei received an invitation to his British classmate Emma’s birthday party, he was so excited that he almost jumped up. Having moved from Shanghai just three months ago, he felt the party was his first real chance to make friends. His mother had spent the entire morning in their tiny apartment kitchen carefully preparing a gift: homemade mooncakes wrapped in red paper decorated with dragon patterns. “In China, red brings good luck and the dragon represents strength,” she said proudly. “These mooncakes carry our family’s blessings.”
At the party, colorful balloons danced along the ceiling (天花板), and the living room was filled with the latest pop songs. Li Wei noticed everyone’s gifts piled (堆放) on a table, and he placed his gift on the top, whose traditional appearance stood out among the gifts. He looked around and found that most of the faces were unfamiliar. So he sat down and listened to the music, waiting excitedly for that big moment — opening the gifts. Soon it came. In the cheers of her friends, Emma walked over to the table. Her eyes were immediately drawn to Li Wei’s uniquely wrapped gift. However, when she opened it, silence fell as she stared at the unfamiliar pastries (糕点). “What…are these?” she asked hesitantly. A boy leaned over and laughed loudly, “Looks like play-dough (橡皮泥)!” Heat rushed to Li Wei’s face as he stammered (结结巴巴地说), “They’re traditional Chinese mooncakes ...” However, his voice was swallowed (淹没) by the laughter that followed.
Someone even whispered, “This might be leftovers from his home. He must think it’s a picnic outing.” Li Wei’s heart sank. He didn’t expect that his well-intended gift — a gesture of love, now turned into something strange and unwelcome in this foreign setting. The joyful atmosphere disappeared quickly, replaced by an uncomfortable silence as guests looked at the mooncakes as if they were strange objects from another world. Just as Li Wei wished he could disappear, he suddenly remembered what his mother had said with pride before he came here.
注意:
1.词数应为150左右;

Blow seven o’clock.
The sharp voice comes from Peter Beamish the scientist who owns the boat.
D 5. A 6. C 7. B

根据第二段“The sharp voice comes from Peter Beamish, the scientist who owns the boat. Fourteen heads turn, and we spot a whale’s spray below the dark grey cliffs.(那尖锐的声音来自彼得·贝米什,他是这艘船的船主,还是一位科学家。众人纷纷转过头来,只见在深灰色的悬崖之下,有一股鲸鱼喷出的水柱)”及第三段“Beamish shifts the engines into gear, and the boat speeds toward the spray. A large circular patch of water widens nearby. “That’s where she dived. She’ll surface in two minutes,” Beamish says again.(贝米什将引擎调至合适挡位,小船便朝着浪花方向疾驰而去。不远处,一大片圆形的水区域逐渐扩大开来。“那就是她潜入的地方。她两分钟后就会浮出水面。”贝米什再次说道。)”可推知,彼得·贝米什在这次旅行中讲解现象,扮演了导游角色。故选D。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第三段“The whale drifts left, its back arching slowly. Then the unforgettable sight: its tail unfolds in slow motion, massive flukes (尾鳍) pouring water and light.(那头鲸鱼向左漂移,背部缓缓隆起。接着出现了令人难忘的一幕:它的尾巴缓缓展开,巨大的鱼鳍搅动着水花,反射出光芒)”及第四段“Minutes pass, and I hear the whale’s blow close by-like a sudden burst of steam from a giant engine. In the open sea, the whale rises, its black, glistening sides forming a smooth curve like an upturned ship.(时间一分一秒地过去,我听到鲸鱼喷出的水柱就在附近响起——就像巨大的引擎突然喷出的蒸汽声。在广阔的海洋中,那头鲸鱼缓缓升起,它黑色、闪闪发光的身躯呈现出一条平滑的曲线,宛如一艘倒扣的船只)”可知,作者认为鲸鱼的喷水和俯冲十分振奋人心。故选A。

B 9. A 10. D 11. C
根据第三段“Unlike earlier machine artists such as Aaron, the Painting Fool only needs a little direction and can come up with its own ideas by running its own web searches to search for necessary materials.(与早期的机器艺术家(如亚伦)不同,这款名为“Painting Fool”的机器只需稍作指导,就能自行开展网络搜索来寻找所需材料,从而产生自己的创作想法)”可知,The Painting Fool会在网上寻找创作灵感。
根据第三段“While some might say they have a mechanical (呆板的,机械的) look, Colton argues that such reactions arise from people’s double standards towards software-produced and human-produced art.(虽然有人可能会说它们看起来有点机械,但科尔顿认为,这种反应源于人们对软件生成的艺术作品和人类创作的艺术作品所持的双重标准)”以及第四段“Colton thinks that when people experience art, they wonder what the artist might have been thinking or what the artist is trying to tell them. It seems obvious, therefore, that with computers producing art, this thinking is cut short-there’s nothing to explore. 故选A。
根据最后一段“But as technology becomes increasingly complex, finding those greater depths in computer art could become possible. This is why Colton asks the Painting Fool to tap into online social networks for its inspiration: hopefully, this way it will choose themes that will already be meaningful to us.(但随着技术变得愈发复杂,或许能够在计算机艺术中发掘出更深层次的内涵成为可能。这就是为什么科尔顿要求“绘画愚人”利用网络社交平台获取灵感:希望这样它就能选择出对我们而言已经具有意义的主题)”可知,作者对这部作品的未来持积极态度。故选D。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“The Painting Fool is one of a growing number of computer programs which are claimed to have creative talents. But human beings are often thought to be the only species to perform creative acts regularly. If this process is broken down into computer code, where does that leave human creativity?( The Painting Fool是众多宣称拥有创造力的计算机程序之一。但人们通常认为,人类是唯一会定期进行创造性活动的物种。如果将这一过程转化为计算机代码,那么人类的创造力又将何去何从呢?)”结合本文介绍人工智能绘画程序The Painting Fool,对比其与早期同类程序的差异,探讨人们对它的偏见,并展望其发展前景。可知,C选项“The Painting Fool:一位人工艺术家”最符合文章标题。故选C。

C By offering in-room entertainment systems.
C 13. B 14. A 15. C

根据第四段中划线词下文“Many provide a menu of relaxing teas and a tailored bed. No matter which sleep suite you choose, the goal is to sleep well so you can improve your health and well-being. Sinking into a comfortable bed should be the best part of a trip!(许多套房还提供一系列舒缓的茶饮以及定制的床铺。无论您选择哪种睡眠套房,其目的都是让您能睡个好觉,从而改善您的健康和生活质量。)”可知,套房所提供的舒缓的茶饮以及定制的床铺都是促进睡眠的方法,“Each offers different ways of inducing sleep(每间套房都提供了不同的inducing睡眠方式。)”中的inducing表示“促进”,与promoting同义。故选A。
文章最后一段“The hope is that more hotels adapt to this wellness trend and return to the original purpose of a hotel room, which is sleep!(希望更多的酒店适应这种健康趋势,回归酒店房间的最初目的,那就是睡觉!)”

He quickly calmed down. He took a deep breath and decided to introduce the mooncakes. “Mooncakes are very important in Chinese culture,” he began, his voice steady. “They are round, symbolizing reunion. We eat them during the Mid-Autumn Festival to celebrate family togetherness. Each bite is full of sweet fillings, just like the warmth of a family gathering.” As he spoke, the room fell silent. People listened intently, their curiosity piqued. Some started to nod in understanding, and the awkward atmosphere gradually faded away. Emma took a small bite of the mooncake and her eyes widened in surprise. “It’s delicious!” she exclaimed. Others followed suit, and soon, the laughter turned into praises.
Three months later, Li Wei and his mooncakes appeared at school’s International Food Fair. His booth was decorated with red lanterns and Chinese knots. People queued up to taste his mooncakes. Li Wei introduced the mooncakes with confidence, sharing the cultural significance behind them. Many students and teachers were deeply attracted. They not only enjoyed the sweet taste of the mooncakes but also learned about Chinese traditions. His mooncakes became the star of the fair. Li Wei was overjoyed. He realized that cultural differences could be bridged through sharing and understanding, and his little mooncakes had become a wonderful bridge to connect different cultures.
