With World Book Day approaching, I’d like to recommend my favorite book, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Set in the 1930s American South, the story follows Atticus Finch, a lawyer defending a black man falsely accused of a crime. Through the eyes of his young daughter Scout, the novel explores themes of justice, compassion, and moral growth.
I recommend this book because it challenges readers to confront prejudice and embrace empathy. Atticus’s unwavering integrity and Scout’s innocent yet insightful observations make the story both thought-provoking and heartwarming. It’s a timeless classic that encourages us to question societal norms and stand up for what is right.
47.I left the classroom, racing down the hall and out of the front gate of our school. I was so nervous to see her. I told myself to calm down and thought about what my mother had told me this morning. I said to myself, “I am her best friend. Encouraging her to face her mother’s illness bravely is what I should do.” I wrote down the words which I wanted to say, hoping my letter would comfort her and give her courage. After finishing the letter, a familiar figure came into my sight. That was Alice. I ran to her immediately.
As I drew nearer to her, my throat tightened, making it impossible to speak. I wanted to reach out to her, to offer a hug or at least a reassuring smile, but my body seemed frozen in place. Alice looked at me and tears dropped from her eyes. I hugged her and summoned up the courage to say, “I am sorry to know your mother’s illness. Remember whenever you need help, and I will be your side. Be brave and don’t let your mother down. Then I handed my letter to her. Alice took over it and held my hand tightly.

At my first lesson in Chinese calligraphy, my teacher told me plainly: “Now I will teach you how to write your name. And to make it beautiful.” I felt my breath catch. I was curious.
Growing up in Singapore, I had an unusual relationship with my Chinese name. My parents are ethnically Chinese, so they asked fortune tellers to decide my name, aiming for maximum luck. As a result, I ended up with a nonsense and embarrassing name: Chen Yiwen, meaning, roughly, “old”, “barley (薏米)” and “warm”.
When I arrived in America for college at 18, I put on an American accent and abandoned my Chinese name. When I moved to Hong Kong in 2021, after 14 years in the States, I decided to learn calligraphy. Why not get back in touch with my heritage? I thought.
In calligraphy, the idea is to copy the old masters’ techniques, thereby refining your own. Every week, though, my teacher would give uncomfortably on-the-nose assessments of my person. “You need to be braver,” he once observed. “Have confidence. Try to produce a bold stroke (笔画).” For years, I had prided myself on presenting an image of confidence, but my writing betrayed me.
I was trying to make sense of this practice. You must visualize the word as it is to be written and leave a trace of yourself in it. As a bodily practice, calligraphy could go beyond its own cultural restrictions. Could it help me go beyond mine? My teacher once said to me, “When you look at the word, you see the body. Though a word on the page is two-dimensional, it contains multitudes, conveying the force you’ve applied, the energy of your grip, the arch of your spine.” I had been learning calligraphy to get in touch with my cultural roots, but what I was really seeking was a return to myself. Now I have sensed that the pleasure out of calligraphy allows me to know myself more fully.
During a recent lesson, my teacher pointed at the word I had just finished, telling me: “This word is much better. I can see the choices you made, your calculations, your flow. Trust yourself. This word is yours.” He might as well have said, “This word is you.”

Think of your most prized possession. Now, imagine you decide you must sell this item. How much is it worth to you? How much would you charge for it? And would anyone else want to buy it at that price?
Let’s consider the real-world example of a yard sale. Before your neighbors come to look at your things, you must first decide on the prices for them. For you, each item has a story, and some items may even evoke strong emotions.
Let’s say you’re selling a pair of special edition sports shoes that you took care of and really enjoyed wearing on special occasions. With these sweet memories in mind, you put a price tag of $130 on the shoes. However, a customer offers $50 for them. You think, “How could they not see how special and valuable these are?”
In financial transactions like this, sellers often believe their own items are worth more than what buyers are willing to pay. This occurs because buyers do not have the seller’s experiences with and emotional attachment to the items. Buyers want a good deal, and they’re not willing to pay what the seller is asking for.
This negotiation process can even feel a little painful for the seller—over losing something and the buyer not valuing it as much. Economists suggest this dynamic occurs through the endowment effect (禀赋效应)—people’s tendency to value things they own more highly than they would if they did not own them. The endowment effect can take hold anytime we feel a sense of ownership over a product, and it can happen quickly.
As the saying goes, “Emotions get the best of us.” There is nothing wrong with being proud of owning things and treasuring your experiences with them. But when you consider selling a prized possession, think about whether you’re fully ready to part with it. The past is the past, though. Removing your emotional attachment to material possessions can help you make more accurate assessments of how much your items are truly worth.
8.What does the underlined word “evoke” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Advocate. B.Cause. C.Identify. D.Control.
9.What makes you put a price tag of $130 on your shoes according to paragraph3?
A.Your fondness for the shoes. B.Your ignorance of the market.
C.The high quality of the shoes. D.The special function of the shoes.
10.Which can best illustrate the result of endowment effect?
A.One likes collecting old things.
B.One tends to buy expensive goods.
C.One offers a lower price when shopping.
D.One charges a higher-than-usual price for something.
11.What’s the purpose of the last paragraph?
A.To make a suggestion. B.To introduce a theory.
C.To analyze a phenomenon. D.To provide some evidence.
D
Robots have worked alongside people for decades, and traditionally, they’ve been incredibly specialized - a bot on a General Motors’ assembly line, for example, might move pieces of metal from one place to another over and over again. This has meant business owners would need to purchase multiple (usually expensive) robots if they wanted to automate multiple tasks. However, tech startup Sanctuary AI has introduced a general-purpose robot designed to perform many workplace tasks currently handled by people - working with humans or without them.
Canada-based Sanctuary AI is one of several companies attempting to overcome the challenge and bring a general-purpose robot to market, and on May 16, it revealed its sixth-generation robot, an AI-powered humanoid named “Phoenix.” Phoenix is 5’ 7”, weighs 155 pounds, and is capable of lifting up to 55 pounds. Its human-like hands have 20 degrees of freedom and haptic (触觉的) sensors that allow it to perform tasks that require dexterity and precision, such as labeling packages or picking fruit.
According to Sanctuary, Phoenix also has human-like intelligence thanks to a proprietary AI control system called Carbon. It acts as the bot’s “brain” and can be trained to complete new tasks in computer simulations. Alternatively, Phoenix can “learn from demonstration.” With this approach, a human uses a VR headset to see what the bot sees and a special rig to guide it through completing a new task. This setup can also be used for remote control, which could enable people to work from home, prevent injuries due to physical labor, and increase the number of jobs available to people with disabilities.
Sanctuary demonstrated the potential of robot remote work with a pilot test at a Mark’s retail store near its headquarters in January. Over the course of one week, a human guided the startup’s fifth-general-purpose robot through 110 tasks - about 40% of the jobs a typical employee needs to be able to do at the store. The ultimate goal is still a robot that could step into the workplace and complete tasks without the need for constant human supervision, and it’s not clear how much Phoenix can do autonomously or how long it takes to train the bot on something new.
We should know more soon, though, as Sanctuary is starting to deploy its general-purpose robot at other locations near its headquarters. Customers don’t have to buy a bot to enjoy its benefits, either - they can hire one by the hour.
12.What has been the traditional limitation of robots in the workplace prior to the development of general-purpose robots?
A.They were only capable of performing simple tasks.
B.They required constant human supervision to function.
C.They were designed to perform highly specialized tasks.
D.They could not physically interact with the environment.
13.What does the underlined word “dexterity” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Strength. B.Skillfulness. C.Energy. D.Wisdom.
14.What can we learn about the AI control system called Carbon?
A.It enables Phoenix to perform a broad set of work tasks.
B.It allows Phoenix to learn from human demonstration.
C.It serves as a remote control for Phoenix.
D.It is a VR headset used for training purposes.
15.What was the significance of the pilot test conducted at a Mark’s retail store?
A.It showcased Phoenix’s capability to replace all human employees in a store.
B.It demonstrated Phoenix’s ability to perform remote work tasks effectively.
C.It proved that Phoenix could handle tasks requiring physical strength.
D.It indicated that Phoenix could autonomously learn from observing other workers.

If you have a great sense of humor, and you’re interested in writing, you may be wondering how to combine your talents. 16 Here are some ways to let your tales bring loud laughter to others.
Identify your style of humor. When you sit down to write a funny story, you need to be aware of your personal style of humor. If you’re trying to write in a style that doesn’t fit your strengths as a comedian or a storyteller, then your story may not be as strong as it could be. 17 Some of the most popular include observational humor, anecdotal (轶事的) humor, dark humor, and dry humor.
18 You need to have some idea about the story before you write it. It’s not enough to have jokes or a funny scenario. The story needs to be strong so that it can support the humorous elements.
Create a conflict and a tension. 19 Once you create your story’s conflict, tell your readers what’s at risk for your characters if they don’t resolve it. You should create a conflict and a tension that move your plot forward. If so, your readers will find the events of your story more interesting.
Choose a point of view. Choosing a story’s point of view requires you to decide who would tell the story best, and how that information should be delivered. The main options are the first person, the second person, and the third person. There is no objectively right or wrong choice. 20
A.Decide what your story is about.
B.There are many different types of humor.
C.Write as many jokes as possible in the story.
D.The conflict and the tension usually make no difference.
E.Writing a funny story is not as difficult as you may think.
F.Ideally, your story’s conflict should explore human nature.
G.That’s because it all depends on what works best for your story.

One morning in April, when I found something was wrong with Alice’s mother, it rained. It seemed as if the Texas sky were sobbing (啜泣). I didn’t know what kind of cancer Mrs. Hastings had until later, but I knew her condition was serious — very serious.
I love Mr. and Mrs. Hastings almost as much as I love my own parents, and Alice is my best friend. But I didn’t want to go to school that day. And I sure didn’t want to see Alice.
What could I possibly say to her? What do people say to their friends at such a time? I tried every trick I knew to avoid going to school. But my mother insisted.
“You have a history test this morning, Linda,” she said, looking at me as if she’d crawled into my mind and knew I was just making excuses. Then she smiled and said, “Be sure to stay close to Alice, especially today, because that poor girl is going to need your strength.”
Strength? What was Mother talking about? I had no strength. I didn’t even know what to say to my best friend. I hid out in the reading room between classes in the hope of avoiding meeting with Alice, but she was never out of my thoughts. I kept trying to come up with something appropriate to say to her because I really wanted to get it right.
Alice and I had the last class in Mrs. Green’s class. I’d avoided seeing her all day, I was going to have to face her in the last period, and I still didn’t have a plan. However, I worried needlessly because Alice never showed up for class. When the English class was over, Mrs. Green said, “Linda, Alice Hastings is your best friend, and she is coming here in a few minutes to get her lesson assignments.”
It seemed as if something was torturing (折磨) my heart and I trembled inwardly. I still didn’t know what to say to Alice, and time was running out.
