The Fire Festival is celebrated in northern Ghana. It’s a holiday we had never heard of before we came to live in a village here as Peace Corps community volunteers. It’s unbelievably great.
On the Fire Festival, drums beat a quick and regular rhythm (韵律) that locals’ dance to in a circle of bodies, men and women, the old and young, holding torches (火把) of burning grass above their heads, which stands for the light and getting off negative energies.
At this moment, this festival is being held at the beginning of the lunar year. The locals are all so lost in the celebration that they don’t pay as much attention to us as they normally will. When they find us taking part just as actively as them, they dance more dynamically and cheer with joy.
Danielle, a friend of mine in the Peace Corps, says, “That we join in the celebration is meaningful because foreigners here are typically seen as the representatives of other organizations, not as people who are willing to join in the Fire Festival rituals (仪式). But in fact, we are dancing and celebrating as one.”
Our two-year Peace Corps service will finish up in mid-December. We can think of no better way to say goodbye than by celebrating the Fire Festival with the villagers we’ve come to know. The festival lets us see a different side of them — and lets them see a different side of us. The neighbors who sell rice are now the women who encourage us to run faster and dance harder at the Fire Festival. And rather than view us as low-key volunteers, they see us as the ones who have crazy dance steps with wild shouts.
4. Why did the author go to northern Ghana?
A. To find a job. B. To go traveling.
C. To study further. D. To do voluntary work.
5. How do the locals feel when seeing the author and Danielle join in the celebration?
A Excited. B. Concerned. C. Stressed. D. Disappointed.
6. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The locals’ ways of celebrating the festival.
B. The secrets of dancing well in the Fire Festival.
C. The reasons for the author’s joining in the festival.
D. The experience of helping the neighbors sell rice.
7. What can we learn from the text?
A. Practice makes perfect.
B. A small act of kindness means a lot.
C. When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
D. Where there is a will, there is a way.
C
It’s often said that people who are born blind or lose their sight, especially when young, can touch, taste, smell, and hear better than those who can see. Donna Posont, who is blind, helps others use their enhanced hearing (增强的听力) to detect (探测) thousands of bird songs.
Posont is a graduate of the University of Michigan-Dearborn. She leads a monthly program she founded at the college. It’s called Birding by Ear and Beyond. It’s held on Saturday each month. During the program, Posont leads visually-impaired (视力受损的) people through 120 acres (英亩) of campus forest. They listen for the sounds of many birds. These include crows, geese, chickadees, woodpeckers, robins, and red-winged blackbirds.
Participants learn to tell the sometimes subtle differences between bird species (物种). They also learn how each bird fits into their habitat (栖息地). “The world is designed for sighted people (视力正常的人), but nature is a special place where it’s okay to be blind,” Posont told The Washington Post. “You can use your other senses to learn why birds and nature are important and how it all works (as one). To me, that’s the beauty of it.”
Through her program, Posont not only helps visually impaired individuals connect with nature but also inspires them to challenge their perceptions (认知) and embrace the world through a different point. The ability to identify birds by ear becomes a gateway (门户) to understanding the relationships within ecosystems (生态系统) and the value of nature.
8. What does Posont’s program focus on?
A. Helping blind people identify birds by sound.
B. Leading blind people to protect campus forest.
C. Training blind people to be nature guides.
D. Providing blind people a safe outdoor space.
9. Why does Posont think nature is a special place for blind people?
A. Nature helps people learn about birds’ habitat.
B. Nature benefits blind people’s physical health.
C. Blind people can study the behavior of wildlife.
D. Blind people can experience nature with other senses.
10. What can you infer from the last paragraph?
A. The challenge of Posont’s program. B. The process of Posont’s program.
C. The importance of Posont’s program. D. The development of Posont’s program.
11. Which would be the best title for the text?
A. Natural Sound: A Journey to the Unknown B. Birding by Ear: A Program for the Blind
C. Beauty of Nature: A Journey of Discovery D. Donna Posont: A Volunteer for Bird Protection
D
Teenage life is quite dramatic but that doesn’t mean you cannot enjoy your life in these years. Even with your daily troubles, your life is not very hard if you know how to deal with them.
I know exactly how you feel. Teenage life can be hard. You are not a kid anymore, because you are smart enough to consider your surroundings. However, you are still not an adult and there are still lots of experiences that you need to have and lessons that you need to learn from these experiences. Above all, the hormonal (激素的) imbalance in your body can really mess you up. I have been there. I was in it for six years exploring what life is about!
As a teenager, I had a major problem completing my routine tasks on time. And at that time, all that I needed to do were to finish my homework, study for the upcoming tests and clean my room. Now, I have much more things to do: cooking, cleaning and working while keeping a balance between all my relationships related to work, family and friends. That really is a lot of work. So, I will just give you one golden tip, “Never leave what you can do today till tomorrow.”
Life becomes much easier now because I finish all my work on time and I have enough time to let my hair down. Half the problems of a teenager appear because we hate doing things. We’d rather go and have fun than sit down and take on our responsibilities. That is why you have so much trouble in your life. Your parents won’t let you go out with friends because you haven’t cleaned your room or your teacher is always criticizing you because you haven’t finished your homework.

A. They couldn’t balance relationships with family and friends.
B. They failed to finish daily routine tasks on time.

A. They are too young to understand their responsibilities.
B. They have to deal with hormonal imbalance in the body.
C. They prefer having fun to taking on their duties.
D. They lack the experience to solve daily problems.
14. What can we infer from the author’s experience mentioned in the text?
A. The author’s teenage life was much harder than that of other teens.
B. The author now lives an easier life mainly because of better time management.
C. The author still struggles with balancing work and personal life.
D. The author thinks teenage life is the most difficult period in one’s life.
15. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To share the author’s teenage experiences and give advice to teens.
B. To explain why teenage life is full of difficulties and challenges.
C. To compare the author’s teenage life with their present life.

I’ve never been a self-confident boy. In class, even when I knew the answer perfectly, I would lower my head, afraid to catch the teacher’s eye. Group discussions were a living nightmare (噩梦), as I was convinced that my ideas were never good enough. This lack of confidence had deeply affected my life in various aspects.
One day, my English teacher, Mr. Smith, announced a school-wide English speech contest. Everyone was encouraged to take part. I was filled with fear at the thought of standing on stage in front of so many people. But Mr. Smith, with his sharp eye, seemed to have noticed my hesitation. He came to me after class and said sincerely, “Tom, I think you have great potential. This could be a chance for you to shine.” His words gently planted a small seed of hope in my heart.
I decided to give it a try. I spent days writing my speech, carefully choosing every single word. Then came the practice. When I stood in front of the mirror, my hands would shake. But I didn’t give up. I practiced day and night, each time a little more bravely.
Finally, the day of the contest arrived. As I stepped onto the stage, my heart was pounding so hard that I could hear it in my ears. The audience seemed like a vast ocean of eyes, all staring at me. For a moment, I froze, my mind going blank. But then, I remembered Mr. Smith's words and all the hard work I had put in. I took a deep breath and began to speak.
At first, my voice was soft, but as I gradually got into the rhythm (节奏) of my speech, it grew stronger and more confident. I poured my heart and soul into every sentence, sharing my story sincerely. When I finished, there was a moment of silence, and then thunderous applause (雷鸣般的掌声) filled the hall. I had done it!

1.续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】Dear Richard,
I’m thrilled to hear that you’ve taken on the role of Promoter of Chinese Culture at your school. I wholeheartedly support your efforts.
To enhance your peers’ understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture on campus, I suggest organizing a series of engaging activities. Firstly, a Chinese Culture Week could be a fantastic start, featuring workshops on calligraphy, paper-cutting, and traditional Chinese cooking. Additionally, hosting a Chinese film festival or a lecture series on Chinese history and philosophy would provide deeper insights into the cultural heritage.
Your initiative will undoubtedly inspire curiosity and foster a greater appreciation for Chinese culture among your classmates. I’m confident that with your creativity and hard work, your efforts will bear fruit. Warm regards,
Li Hua

The host finally announced, “The first-prize winner is Tom!” I stood rooted to the spot, disbelief and joy washing over me. The words echoed in my ears as if in a dream. My classmates’ cheers blended with the judges’ nods of approval, and I felt a rush of warmth prickling my eyes. Glancing at Mr. Smith, I saw him beaming, his eyes bright with pride. This wasn’t just a win — it was proof that my endless hours of practice and newfound courage had paid off. The fear that once haunted me melted away, replaced by a sense of accomplishment I’d never known.
I walked up to the stage on shaky legs to receive my award. As I grasped the trophy, its weight grounded me in reality. “Thank you,” I managed, my voice steady despite the trembling. Turning to face the audience, I spoke from the heart: “Once, I was too afraid to speak up. But Mr. Smith’s belief and my own determination changed that.” The applause swelled again, and I realized confidence isn’t born overnight — it’s forged through challenges. From that day on, I vowed to embrace every opportunity, knowing that beneath my self-doubt lay a strength waiting to shine.
