Natural disasters, such as earthquakes, rainstorms and strong winds, usually make a big difference to human life. They not only cause property (财产) loss but also take away people’s lives.
Strong winds can be very terrible. On March 31st, 2024, strong winds hit Nanchang, Jiangxi province. The strong winds broke the windows into pieces and blew off three people sleeping at home, causing their deaths. What’s worse, more than 1,600 trees were blown down overnight. This deadly disaster was mainly caused by funnelling (狭管效应).
When the earthquake happens, the ground and buildings will shake terribly. In serious situations, buildings may even fall down and will bury people in the ground. Recently, in Taiwan, the most powerful earthquake in a quarter century rocked the island on April 3rd. At least nine people were killed and hundreds of people were hurt.
Another example is rainstorms. They can flood many places. Dubai lies on the coast of the Persian Gulf and in the northeast of the U. A.E. with a long and beautiful coastline. It doesn’t rain a lot. But on April 16th, a big rainstorm hit Dubai. It rained so much in just 12 hours that it was like a year’s worth of rain. The heavy rain flooded roads, shopping malls, and even airports, causing a lot of damage (破坏).
To better deal with natural disasters, we need to make our disaster prevention, mitigation, and relief coordination system (防灾救灾机制) better. Also, people should learn ways to protect themselves when facing natural disasters. But most importantly, we should realize that we are not the master of nature, we need to care about it and respect (尊重) it.

In the entire animal world, birds are the only living creatures with feathers. They are warm-blooded, like mammals. There are about 9,000 different kinds of birds living in all parts of the world. They include exotic, colorful birds such as parrots, garden birds such as robins and thrushes, water birds such as ducks, sea birds such as puffins and penguins, and many more. The tiny bee hummingbird is one of the world’s smallest birds. It measures about 2 inches (5cm) from beak to tail and is so light that 17 bee hummingbirds weigh only 1 oz (28g). A bee hummingbird is so small that it could fit in the palm of your hand. The ostrich, which is more than 8 feet (2.5m) tall, is the world’s largest bird, but it cannot fly at all. The ostrich head looks huge in comparison to a tiny bee hummingbird.
① . These birds have large, powerful chest muscles to allow them to flap their wings. Their bones are light, which assists them during flight. Feathers are light, too. They protect the bird’s body and keep it warm. Wing feathers fit together to form a smooth, airtight surface for gliding. Tail feathers provide balance and help the bird steer in midair.
② . A few birds, however, cannot fly. Flightless or nearly flightless birds include ostriches, penguins, and the rare kakapo, a kind of parrot from New Zealand.
Birds do not have teeth, which would be too heavy; instead, they have a strong, light bill, or beak. Most birds, particularly eagles and other birds of prey, have good eyesight and hearing. Their sense of smell, however, is poor.
③ . A bird’s feathers are called its plumage. Some birds, such as the wren and the sparrow, have brown plumage for camouflage. Other birds have plumage with dazzling colors and patterns. It is usually the males that have bright plumage, to help them attract a mate during the breeding season. The distinctive coloring also helps the members of a flock stay together.
Most of the bones in a bird’s skeleton are hollow, with tiny, honeycombed holes, to save body weight. Wings are controlled by powerful muscles attached to the keel, which is a ridge along the edge of the breast-bone.
④ . Most of a bird’s body is taken up by the muscles, heart, lungs, and digestive system. Birds have two stomachs. The first stomach, the crop, stores food; the second, the gizzard, grinds the food to a pulp.
36.Which of the following statements about birds is true?
A.17 bee hummingbirds are not as heavy as 1 oz (28g).
B.Birds are the only living creatures with feathers and fur.
C.Most birds have a poor sense of smell but excellent eyesight and hearing.
D.Birds have heavy bones that make them unable to glide or soar in the air.
37.We’d better put the sentence “Most birds are born masters of flying.” in ______.
A.① B.② C.③ D.④
38.Why do some birds have bright feathers?
A.To protect the bird’s body and keep it warm.
B.To help stay away from the members of a flock.
C.To provide balance and help the bird steer in midair.
D.To catch the mate’s attention during the breeding season.
39.What does the underlined word “hollow” in Paragraph 6 probably mean?
A.Soft. B.Strong. C.Empty inside. D.Smooth-edged.
40.The passage can usually be read in the part of ______ in a magazine.
A.Culture B.Health C.Business D.Nature

六、短文填空
首字母填空。
A group of Przewalski’s horses are being introduced (引进) to the Iberian Highlands in Spain (西班牙). People hope that the animals will help p 56 wildfires.
The Iberian Highlands is a mountainous area w 57 lots of juniper, oak and pine trees growing there. Wildfires are often a problem in the area, caused by rising t 58 that the dry out plants and trees cause. Then the dry plants and trees catch fire very e 59 . The horses’ job is to eat the dry leaves and undergrowth and keep the g 60 clear, which will slowdown the spread of wildfires.
The przewalski’s are from a nature reserve in France. There are seven females and three males now, and the plan is to introduce m 61 of them over time.
Przewalski’s, known as “the last truly wild horse”, are an ancient and endangered breed. Cave paintings in Spain s 62 that horses look like Przewalski’s. Like what we see in the paintings, they have shorter l 63 than most horses and tufty manes. In the 1960s the horses died out in the w 64 but they have since been reintroduced to parts of China, France, Kazakhstan and Mongolia.
Around the world, many other c 65 are using the similar ways to deal with wildfires. In Chile (智利) and South America, goats (山羊) have been grazing the forests of Bosques de Chacay since 2017, and in the Greater Coa Valley, Portugal (葡萄牙), traditional breeds of cattle and horses have been reintroduced.
七、任务型阅读
阅读下列短文,根据所读内容,在文章后的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词,回答两个问题。
Our world is facing many dangerous situations. We must do something to protect the environment.
The greenhouse effect
When we burn fuels such as petrol and coal, a gas called CO₂ is produced. Too much of this gas pollutes (污染) the atmosphere (大气), and causes it to keep in too much heat. As a result of the greenhouse effect, the earth’s temperature is going up so quickly that the sea level is caused to become higher and higher, and in the future, you may have difficulty seeing any city in the world.
Cutting down forests
Every year, we destroy (破坏) nature by cutting down huge areas of forests. This makes the greenhouse effect worse because trees take in CO₂ and give out O₂. Cutting down trees also destroys the homes of the animals that live in our forests, and causes the surface of the soil to be more easily destroyed by rain. This can lead to floods and even more damage to the environment.
Bad habits
Many of our habits cause pollution. People often use things once and then throw them away, or leave them on the ground as litter. This creates tons of rubbish and pollutes our land and seas all the time.
In order to protect the environment, we need to take proper action. Chinese government has made laws and rules about dealing with the waste. We need to give up bad habits and try to develop good habits. We should buy and use environmentally-friendly products. To reduce air pollution, we can walk or take public transport.
If we just learn to live in new and different ways, we can make a difference.
