第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、 B、 C、 D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

Family vacations in Hawaii
Whether your interests are history, native cultures, hiking, water sports, or simply relaxing in the sun, Hawaii has abundant choices to keep you and your family entertained.
Waikiki Beach
This famous two-mile stretch of sand is home to scores of family-friendly beach hotels and all kinds of action-packed excitement. Waikiki Beach is the perfect place to go if you’re looking for warm ocean water and golden beaches. Kids will enjoy walking along the beach, stopping for shaved ice or ice cream and taking a dip in a safe area of the ocean.
Oahu’s North Shore
Some of the tallest ocean waves in the world are found at Oahu, Hawaii’s North Shore coastline during the winter months. These crashing walls of water are born for surfing and offer one of the best free shows on the islands. The North Shore is home to world-class surf contests, attracting the world’s top surfers.
Polynesian Cultural Center
Nothing appeals to the whole family like the Hawaiian past coming alive. Besides, the colorful costumes, lively songs, and traditional dances in the Pacific region are presented here. You’ll see the customs of Fiji, New Zealand, Marquesas, Samoa, Tahiti, Tonga, and Hawaii all represented in the Polynesian Cultural Center’s re-created island villages, which are decorated with palm trees and tropical gardens.
Waimea Canyon(峡谷) State Park
More than 3,000 feet deep, this landmark on Hawaii’s island of Kauai is the largest canyon in the Pacific. Unlike the Grand Canyon, plentiful rain keeps Waimea Canyon and its surrounding area thick with vegetation(植被), and visitors are frequently treated to the sight of vivid rainbows. It offers a great canyon view and a covered picnic area.

The Fire Festival is celebrated in northern Ghana. It’s a holiday we had never heard of before we came to live in a village here as Peace Corps community volunteers. It’s unbelievably great.
At the Fire Festival, people beat drums with a quick and regular rhythm that locals dance to in a circle of bodies, men and women, the old and the young, holding torches of burning grass above their heads, which stands for the light and getting off the negative energy.
At this moment, this festival is being held at the beginning of the lunar year. The locals are all so involved in the celebration that they don’t pay as much attention to us as they normally will. When they find us getting involved as they are, they dance more vigorously and scream with joy.
Danielle, a friend of mine in the Peace Corps, says, “That we join in the celebration is significant because foreigners here are typically seen as the representatives of other organizations, not as people who are willing to join in the Fire Festival rituals(仪式). But in fact, we are dancing and celebrating as one.”
Our two-year Peace Corps service will finish in mid-November. We can think of no better way to say goodbye than by celebrating the Fire Festival with the villagers we’ve come to know. The festival lets us see a different side of them—and lets them see a different side of us. The neighbors who sell rice are now the women who urge us to run faster and dance harder at the Fire Festival. And rather than view us as low-key volunteers, they see us as the ones who have crazy dance steps with wild screams.
( )4. Why did the author go to northern Ghana?
A. To find a job. B. To go traveling.
C. To study further. D. To do voluntary work.
( )5. How do the locals feel when they see the volunteers joining in the celebration?
A. Annoyed. B. Indifferent. C. Confused. D. Excited.
( )6. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The disadvantages of celebrating the Fire Festival.
B. The secrets of dancing well at the Fire Festival.
C. The reasons for the author’s participation in the festival.
D. The experience of helping the neighbors sell rice.
( )7. What can we learn from the text?
A. Practice makes perfect.
B. Where there is a will, there is a way.
C. When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
D. The grass is always greener on the other side.
C
Working or learning in a foreign country can be a difficult experience. The hardest part of working abroad isn’t finding a place to stay in or learning the language. It’s learning to overcome the culture shock.
These things are part of everyday life, and include many signs, gestures, facial expressions, and customs. When we enter a new culture, these cues(提示) are usually not obvious or so different that they’re no longer understandable to us.
“When a person enters a foreign culture,” wrote Oberg, “all or most of these familiar cues are eliminated. He or she is like a fish out of water. No matter how broad-minded he or she may be, lots of props have been knocked out from the environment.”
This is what happened to Lara, a young IT consultant from America who moved to their company in southern Europe last year. Three weeks after she arrived in Europe, Lara sent a desperate email, begging to return home. “The people are so unfriendly,” Lara wrote. “They eat at strange hours and I’m starting to get allergic(过敏的) to the local food. I can’t get anything done because their way of doing business is so disorganised and inefficient and I have a terrible skin itch because of the water. I want to go home!”
What Lara and other IT consultants met on their first assignment abroad was a culture shock. While you can’t prevent the culture shock from happening, you can take some measures to cut down on its effects.
( )8. What is the most difficult part for a foreign student?
A. Entering a famous school.
B. Finding the right place to live in.
C. Adapting to the local culture.
D. Learning a foreign language.
( )9. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “eliminated” in Paragraph 3?
A. Solved. B. Measured. C. Observed. D. Removed.
( )10. What happened to Lara when she arrived in Europe?
A. Her life got into a mess.
B. She worked more efficiently than at home.
C. She couldn’t get on well with her colleagues.
D. She was out of condition because of the weather.
( )11. Why does the author describe Lara’s experience?
A. To tell us how she managed to work well.
B. To explain to us what culture shock is.
C. To show us how to adapt to the culture shock.
D. To show us why we’ll meet with the culture shock.
D
“A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is still putting on its shoes,” said Mark Twain. In today’s Internet world of “fake(假的) news”, lies spread even faster and the truth is having trouble finding its shoes.
To make matters worse, most young people get news from social media sites where facts are mixed with rumors(谣言), half-truths and complete lies. This has led to young people becoming confused. In the latest PISA, which tested 15-year-olds worldwide on academic subjects, fewer than one in ten of the examinees were reported to be able to recognize facts from opinions. A Stanford University study showed that students at all levels of education could not tell real news from fake news. In one instance, 80 percent thought that a paid advertisement was a real news story.
Fake news is spread by people who have a prejudice(偏见). They want to influence public opinions either for or against something or someone. It is important, then, for young people to recognize when they are being used and to be doubtful about online information.
Traditional media, such as newspapers and television, are still the more believable sources of information. Reporters are professionally trained to look for facts, and editors have the job of making sure those facts are correct. However, if you are getting most of your information online, you have to be your own editor. In that case, the first thing to do is look at the writer of a post. Is this person known to be objective? Does the site where you read the post have a prejudice? Next, look for other sources from mainstream media to make sure the information is true. In other words, by putting on your truth boots you won’t be fooled into chasing lies.
( )12. Why is the quote mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A. To test readers.
B. To introduce the topic.
C. To give an explanation.
D. To offer background information.
( )13. What does the writer say about young people with news around?
A. They make fake news and spread it.
B. They are easily fooled by fake news.
C. They get worried about their education.
D. They can recognize facts from opinions.
( )14. According to the writer, what can help us avoid being fooled by fake news?
A. Only looking for news through media.
B. Focusing on the news instead of the writer.
C. Comparing the news from different sources.
D. Becoming a professional and trained reporter.
( )15. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. What should a reporter do?
B. Who makes and spreads fake news?
C. How can we become a newspaper editor?
D. How can we stay objective in reading news?
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Responsibility is an admirable character that makes life better for everyone around you. 16 It’s also about making proper choices and doing what is right. Showing responsibility isn’t always easy, but practicing and making an effort will help you improve over time.
Think of the consequences before speaking or acting.
Bad decisions often lead to a lot of new problems. Many times, you can avoid these problems by thinking about what you’re about to do before you go through with it. Irresponsible people often make decisions without realizing how they are affecting others. 17
18
Take time out to look back on what you have said or done, especially after a difficult decision. By reflecting, you give yourself a chance to make better decisions. Consider what goes right, what goes wrong, and what you can do differently next time. Use what you learn to become wiser and more responsible.
Tell the truth to be honest with others.
If you’re honest, people will believe you are a responsible person. Try to be as honest as possible. Lying leads to deeper holes in the long run, so admit when you have done something wrong. 19 But it’s something you can handle when you’re a responsible person.
Apologize for any mistake you make.
No one is perfect, and no matter how responsible you try to be, you might mess up sometimes. 20 If you hurt someone, tell them you are sorry and that you will do better next time.
A. This can be very tough to do at times.
B. Instead of hiding your mistakes, admit them.
C. Find solutions to problems instead of blaming others.
D. It isn’t only about doing your homework or feeding the dog.
E. Pause and reflect on your actions to see what you can do better.
F. Avoid big lies that hurt one’s feelings if you want people to trust you.
G. Most decisions affect other people, so be responsible for your choices.

“Lion Hair! Lion Hair! Hahahaha!”
It wasn’t the first time that she’d been called Lion Hair. Rani’s cheeks burned and tears stung her eyes. She hurriedly jumped off the school bus and landed in a ditch(沟) of muddy water.
As she got back into her house, Rani’s cousins, Amit and Sumit, came over, mocked(嘲笑) her hair as a bird’s nest and talked about how many bird eggs there were in it. Ignoring it, her mother was cooking dinner in the kitchen.
Before she could think, Rani had fled out of the house and made her way down a narrow path into a clearing. “I hate my hair!” she screamed as tears of rage and shame streamed down her cheeks.
Before long, she fell asleep because of tiredness.
Rani woke up to Mama’s anxious calls, but she hugged herself and promised herself not to go home in that Mama let Amit and Sumit make fun of her.
Alone, she felt very hungry and frightened as dusk fell. Suddenly, someone or something was making its way into the clearing. Rani froze. Frightened a lot, she even opened her mouth to scream.
It was Papa. Relief and joy flooded through Rani. She threw her arms around Papa and clung to him.
With an obvious relief, Papa told her that everyone had been looking all over the place for her and urged her to go home. Rani shook her head and cried, telling Papa everything about her damned hair and that she had decided to quit the inter-school speech competition on Monday. Scanning Rani’s face, Papa replied that he promised to give those boys and cousins a heavy lesson. Meanwhile, he added that fleeing was not a good way to solve problems and that Rani was never the one to shy away from a challenge.
With these comforting words and in Papa’s warm arms, she entered home. It was time for dinner, and Mama was waiting for them. Rani’s favorite dish! Yummy! The delicious food cooked by Mama satisfied and pleased her a lot. After dinner, Rani rested herself next to Papa and began to sleep.
