When Stephanie, my best friend, told me that she wanted to run a marathon (马拉松) and needed my help, I tried to talk her out of it. “You hate running. Marathon training is terrible and takes over your life. It’s running all the time,” I argued.
I couldn’t change her mind. So I told her that she should at least do it right: choose a right race and I’d run with her. Finally, we chose the Honolulu Marathon. It took place in Hawaii, a beautiful place. It’s one of the 10 largest marathons in the world, with nearly 22,000 finishers each year. But more importantly, a full 35 percent of them are first-timers. And Honolulu’s course has no cut-off, staying open until the last runner finishes. The race seemed perfect for green runners like Stephanie.
Although I have run plenty of my own races, I was surprised by the amount of pressure I felt in this one. Being in charge of your own race is one thing. Being the boss of someone else is another. It was my job to encourage her and make decisions for her while she came across difficulties and wanted to give up during the race. I felt a huge responsibility that her dream of running across the finish line was in my hands.
The Honolulu Marathon day proved to be hot and sunny. The temperature hit 82 degrees Fahrenheit. The sun was strong; shade (树荫) was little and far between. After running for more than four hours, Stephanie was showing signs of heat exhaustion (中暑). I told her to walk until I was sure it was safe for her to keep running again.
Soon, the finish line was in sight and as we crossed the line, we hugged, and tears flowed. I knew why Stephanie was crying. It’s amazing when you complete something you never thought possible.
4. What was the author’s attitude towards Stephanie’s running a marathon at first?
A. Negative. B. Excited.
C. Annoyed. D. Supportive.
5. Why did the author and Stephanie choose to run the Honolulu Marathon?
A. They were familiar with the place.
B. The race was suitable for beginners.
C. They wanted to enjoy the beautiful views there.
D. The race was popular among marathon runners.
6. What possibly made the author feel stressed?
A. Her decision to turn down her friend.
B. The strong competition from other runners.
C. The bad performance of Stephanie in training.
D. Her duty to support Stephanie in finishing her race.
7. What does the author mainly talk about in Paragraph 4?
A. The author’s skill in completing a marathon.
B. The success of Stephanie’s first marathon race.
C. The difficulty in running a marathon for Stephanie.
D. The importance of taking a rest during a tough marathon.
C
Strange things were happening in the countryside of northeast Hebei. For three days the water in the village wells rose and fell, rose and fell. Farmers noticed that the well walls had deep cracks in them. A smelly gas came out of the cracks. In the farmyards, the chickens and even the pigs were too nervous to eat. Mice ran out of the fields looking for places to hide. Fish jumped out of their bowls and ponds. At about 3:00 am on July 28, 1976, some people saw bright lights in the sky. The sound of planes could be heard outside the city of Tangshan even when no planes were in the sky. In the city, the water pipes in some buildings cracked and burst. But the one million people of the city, who thought little of these events, were asleep as usual that night.
At 3:42 am, everything began to shake. It seemed as if the world were coming to an end! Eleven kilometers directly below the city, one of the most deadly earthquakes of the 20th century had begun. It was felt in Beijing, which is more than 150 kilometers away. One-third of the nation felt it. A huge crack, eight kilometers long and thirty meters wide, cut across houses, roads, and waterways. Steam burst from holes in the ground. Hard hills of rock became rivers of dirt. In less than one minute, a large city lay in ruins. Two-thirds of the people who lived there were dead or injured. Thousands of children were left without parents. The number of people who were killed or badly injured reached more than 400,000.
Everywhere survivors looked, there was nothing but ruins. Nearly everything in the city was destroyed. About 75 percent of the city’s factories and buildings, 90 percent of its homes, and all of its hospitals were gone. Bricks covered the ground like red autumn leaves. No wind, however, could blow them away. Most bridges had fallen or were not safe to cross. The railway tracks were now useless pieces of metal. Tens of thousands of cows, hundreds of thousands of pigs, and millions of chickens were dead. Sand now filled the wells instead of water. People were in shock — and then, later that afternoon, another big quake shook Tangshan again. Even more buildings fell down. Water, food, and electricity were hard to get. People began to wonder how long the disaster would last.
All hope was not lost. Soon after the quakes, the army sent 150,000 soldiers to Tangshan to dig out those who were trapped and to bury the dead. More than 10,000 doctors and nurses came to provide medical care. Workers built shelters for survivors whose homes had been destroyed. Fresh water was taken to the city by train, truck, and plane. Slowly, the city began to breathe again.
8. Which of the following is correct about the Tangshan earthquake?
A. The smelly gas from well cracks appeared after the bright lights in the sky.
B The deadly earthquake started at 3:42 am when most people were asleep.
C. The sound of planes was heard because there were planes flying over Tangshan.
D. Water pipes in all buildings in Tangshan cracked before the earthquake.
9 What does the underlined phrase “lay in ruins” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Was in a state of complete destruction.
B. Was covered with rocks and dirt.
C. Was crowded with survivors.
D. Was left empty and quiet.
10. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A. The second quake caused more damage than the first one.
B. Survivors in Tangshan faced severe living difficulties after the quakes.
C. Most of the farm animals in Tangshan survived the earthquake.
D. The city’s hospitals were still working to help the injured.
11. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Strange things happened before the Tangshan earthquake.
B. The Tangshan earthquake caused great damage.
C. The Tangshan earthquake and the rescue work after it.
D. How Tangshan people rebuilt their city.
D
As a child I read books with great interest until I went to sleep. When my GCSEs came around, I revised for hours without pause. But in recent years, I’ve found that I prefer scrolling (滑动) on my phone to read for pleasure.
So, about a year ago, I made a promise: every time I came across a word I didn’t know — in a novel, an article or a conversation — I would look it up and write it down. I wouldn’t use any pen or notebook, just to keep a running list on my phone. Each week, I’d spend a few minutes reading the list back to try to keep the words in mind.
The list now expands almost 20 pages. Each time I look up and record a word, I feel a slight change, as though some neglected (忽视的) part of my brain is working again. There is also an important element to it — it functions as something of a diary, a record of what I’ve been reading and thinking about, and who I’ve been listening to.
It’s not an easy habit to keep up. If I’m reading on the underground, I have to stop mid-paragraph, pull out my phone and type the new word I come across into my digital doc. And then there’s the revising which I often forget to do, dutifully scrolling through my growing words list, as if I were preparing for a vocabulary test.
Still, it’s made my mind much sharper. I find myself reaching less often for the same tiring handful of adjectives, and more often for something clear and exact. Few things are more satisfying than finding the exact word you were searching for. This small habit renewed my love of reading. In an era when our devices attract our attention, it is important to use my brain as a tool for slow thinking. And it has given me back something I feared I’d lost — the pleasure of exercising a mind that, after years of scrolling on my phone, is finally waking up again.
12. What can we learn about the author from paragraph 1?
A. She argues against scrolling on her phone.
B. She was into reading at a very young age.
C. She has a strong desire to read an e-book.
D. She struggles to find the pleasure of reading.
13. Why did the author take new words down on her phone?
A. To test her memory. B. To go on a research.
C. To practise spelling. D. To learn new words.
14. What is the difficulty in keeping up the habit according to the author?
A. The functions of the phone are unsafe.
B. Going over the words is often forgotten.
C. A vocabulary exam is difficult to pass.
D. Working on the tube is not convenient.
15. Which of the following word can best describe the impact of this habit?
A. Predictable. B. Short-lived.
C. Far-reaching. D. Unclear.

As I went home, my heart was filled with excitement. I had earned a perfect score of 100 on my math test! Mom had promised that a big cream cake would be my reward for such a performance. Bursting through the door, I couldn’t wait to share my great news.
“Mom, Mom!” I waved the test paper. “I did it! I got a perfect score!”Mom’s face beamed (发光) with pride as she took the test paper. To my surprise, her expression darkened, but she quickly regained her smile. With a gentle smile, she said, “Oh, that’s wonderful, honey! I’m so proud of you.” “Can we get the cake now?” I asked eagerly. “Of course,” Mom said. “I’ll just go to the store and pick one up.”
As Mom left, I couldn’t contain my excitement. I switched on the TV, watching my favorite cartoons. Time seemed to fly by as I eagerly awaited Mom’s return. When she finally arrived, we divided the cake, enjoying every bite. The sweet cream melted (融化) in our mouths. It was so delicious.
The following day in class, as we exchanged answers with classmates, I noticed something was wrong between my paper and the answer key. Puzzled, I went to Miss Johnson after class. “Excuse me, Miss Johnson,” I said. “I think there might be a mistake. My answer to question number 15 doesn’t match the answer key.”
Miss Johnson took my test paper and examined it carefully. Her eyes widened in surprise. “Oh, my goodness, you’re right!” she said. Miss Johnson compared my answer with the correct answer key and discovered that I had made an error on question number 15. My actual score was 95. A wave of embarrassment washed over me. “I’m so sorry, Miss Johnson,” I lowered my head. “I didn’t realize that I had made a mistake.” Miss Johnson smiled gently. “Don’t worry about it, honey. Mistakes happen.”
Though Miss Johnson decided that she wouldn’t change my grade, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I should tell Mom the truth.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;

A 5. B 6. D 7.

B. The deadly earthquake started at 3:42 am when most people were asleep.
C. The sound of planes was heard because there were planes flying over Tangshan.
D. Water pipes in all buildings in Tangshan cracked before the earthquake.
9. What does the underlined phrase “lay in ruins” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
B 9. A 10. B 11. C

根据第一段中“But the one million people of the city, who thought little of these events, were asleep as usual that night. (但这座城市的100万居民却像往常一样,在那个夜晚安然入睡,对这些事情毫不在意。)”和第二段中“At 3:42 am, everything began to shake. It seemed as if the world were coming to an end! Eleven kilometers directly below the city, one of the most deadly earthquakes of the 20th century had begun. (凌晨3点42分,一切都开始摇晃起来。仿佛整个世界都要毁灭了!在城市正下方11公里处,这场20世纪最致命的地震之一开始了。)”可知,“致命的地震发生在凌晨3点42分,当时大多数人正在睡觉”与文意相符。故选B项。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线部分的上文“A huge crack, eight kilometers long and thirty meters wide, cut across houses, roads, and waterways. Steam burst from holes in the ground. Hard hills of rock became rivers of dirt. (一条长达8公里、宽达30米的巨大裂缝横穿了房屋、道路和水道。地面上的裂缝处冒出蒸汽。坚硬的岩石山丘变成了泥泞的河流。)”和下文“Two-thirds of the people who lived there were dead or injured. Thousands of children were left without parents. The number of people who were killed or badly injured reached more than 400,000. (那里居住的三分之二的人要么丧生,要么受伤。数以千计的儿童失去了父母。死亡和重伤的人数超过了40万。)”可知,地震非常剧烈,巨大裂缝摧毁了地表上的事物,人员伤亡惨重。由此可知,城市成为一片废墟,画线部分意思应该是“处于完全毁灭的状态”。故选A项。
根据第三段中“Everywhere survivors looked, there was nothing but ruins. Nearly everything in the city was destroyed. (幸存者放眼望去,到处都是废墟。城里几乎所有的东西都被毁了。)”和“Even more buildings fell down. Water, food, and electricity were hard to get.

D. Unclear.
B 13. D 14. B 15. C

根据第二段中的“every time I came across a word I didn’t know — in a novel, an article or a conversation — I would look it up and write it down. I wouldn’t use any pen or notebook, just to keep a running list on my phone. Each week, I’d spend a few minutes reading the list back to try to keep the words in mind. (每当我在小说、文章或是对话里遇到不认识的单词时,我都会去查阅词义并把它记下来。我不会用笔和笔记本,只在手机上建一份动态更新的单词清单。每周我都会花几分钟时间翻看这份清单,努力把这些单词记牢。)”可知,作者在手机上记录生词是为了学习新单词。故选D项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“It’s not an easy habit to keep up. If I’m reading on the underground, I have to stop mid-paragraph, pull out my phone and type the new word I come across into my digital doc. And then there’s the revising which I often forget to do, dutifully scrolling through my growing words list, as if I were preparing for a vocabulary test. (坚持这个习惯并非易事。要是在地铁上阅读,我读到段落中途就得停下来,掏出手机,把遇到的生词输入到电子文档里。此外还有复习环节 —— 我总容易忘记去做,却又得规规矩矩地翻看着越积越长的单词表,活脱脱像在备战词汇测试似的。)”可知,作者认为坚持这个习惯的困难在于经常忘记复习单词。故选B项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Still, it’s made my mind much sharper.

Later that evening, as I got home, Mom was preparing dinner. She told me the dinner would be ready soon and I could take out the leftover cake from the fridge if I was hungry. My heart sank. How could I tell her that I hadn’t got a perfect score after all? Having gathered all my courage, I uttered the truth. “Mom, I have to tell you something,” I said. “I didn’t actually get a perfect score on my math test. I made a mistake on one of the questions, and my real score is 95.”
To my surprise, Mom burst out laughing, saying, “Oh, honey, I already knew that.” “You did?” I couldn’t believe my ears. “Yes,” Mom said. “I noticed the mistake on your test paper last night. But I didn’t want to spoil your excitement. You worked so hard for that cake, and you deserved to enjoy it.” I felt relieved that Mom wasn’t angry. I had learned a valuable lesson that day: honesty is always the best policy. And even though I didn’t get a perfect score, I still got a delicious cake and a warm hug from my mom.
