Today we have another topic:“Four common British expressions.” Now, before we get started, make sure you connect with me on all my social media which is right here. You can subscribe to my YouTube. You can also like me on Facebook. And for my Chinese followers, I have my Weibo account as well. Four Common British Expressions: “A piece of cake.” And this is very similar to “Easy-peasy, lemon squeezy,” which we've discussed in a former video. And basically, it means very easy. So I might come out of an easy exam saving, “That exam was a piece of cake. ” “Break a leg!” It actually looks really rather cruel, but I promise you it's positive. And “Break a leg!” means “Good luck!” So before a race, before a job interview, before a test, instead of saying “Good luck!” I might say “Break a leg!” “It cost an arm and a leg.” And this basically means something was really expensive. If I say, “My bag cost an arm and a leg,” I mean it cost a lot of money. “To call it a day.” And this means “to end a task”. So, for example, “I'm feeling a bit tired. I think I'll call it a day. ”That means “I think I'll stop here. Let's finish.” Thank you so much for watching this program of “Four Common British Expressions.” I hope you like it, and I hope you've learned something. 1. How can Chinese listeners connect with Lucy? A. With Wechat B. Through Weibo C. On Facebook D. By YouTube. 2. When John went to an English Speech Competition, you should say “_________” to him. A. Break a leg! B. It cost an arm and a leg. C. To call it a day D. A piece of cake. 3. What does he/she mean when the teacher says “Let's call it a day.” ? A. He/She will stop that day B. He/She feels tired C. Class is over. D. It is daytime. B From soldier to wildlife photographer, the 67-year-old Shandong Province native, Ge Yuxiu, has lived in Qinghai Province for 51 years. For almost half that time, he has been on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, where he has devoted his life to photographing and protecting wild animals. Ge’s love for photography grew after his photo of soldiers reading news written on a blackboard was published in Qinghai Daily in 1979. He probably would never have turned to photographing wild animals without a visit to Bird Island in Qinghai Lake in 1995. “I became addicted to the bird kingdom,” Ge said, adding that he has so far visited the island more than 200 times to take photos. In late 1997, Ge was on his way to the island to take photos of swans when he saw seven yellowish-brown animals running across the grass-lands, in a line. On hearing one of his companions shouting “Przewalski’s gazelle”, he took out his camera and took photos of them. He was later told by wildlife reservation experts that he had shot the world ‘s first image of Przewalski’s gazelle (普氏原羚), a relatively small, slender antelope unique to China. “I was so excited to hear that,” he said. His excitement, however, soon gave way to anxiety after he learned about the animal’s endangered situation. Only found around Qinghai Lake, there were just 300 of them surviving in the wild at the time. The incident became a turning point in Ge ‘s photography career, as he decided to devote his efforts to saving the gazelle and other endangered animals. From then on, he often spent time in the wild observing the gazelle and regularly visited wildlife reservation experts in Qinghai and places much farther away. Through his photos, Ge publicly called on the government, research institutions and the public to protect Przewalski’s gazelle. His continued efforts led to at least eight of his proposals reaching Qinghai provincial authorities, and a reserve and a separate station especially for the reservation of the antelope were established in December 2007 and September 2009. Thanks to joint efforts, the population of Przewalski’s gazelle has now increased to about 2,700. 4. When did Ge take up wildlife protection? A. In 1979. B. In 1995. C. In 1997. D. In 2007. 5. Why did he feel excited after photographing the Przewalski’s gazelles? A. He learnt the photo was valuable. B. He found they were endangered. C. He knew that they were rare. D. He realized they were unique. 6. Which of the following words can best describe Ge? A. Creative and energetic. B. Devoted and determined. C. Calm and generous. D. Honest and positive. 7. What can be the best title for the text? A. A Wildlife Photographer B. A Retired Soldier C. A Learned Researcher D. A Wildlife Guardian C Unhappily married for many years, Peter waited until his children were grown up before he divorced their mother. He hoped this would make the experience less unhappy for them. Yet in the six years since, he has not seen either of his two sons. “For me it has been completely destructive,” he says. “I get teary when I think about them.” Though people tend not to talk about it much, family estrangement seems to be widespread in America. The relationship most commonly cut off is that between parent and adult child, and in most cases it is the child who holds the knife. Because family estrangement has been a subject of research only for the past decade, there are no data to show whether it is becoming more common. But many sociologists and psychologists think it is. In one way this seems surprising. Divorce increases the risk of family divisions. Yet in recent years, America’s divorce rate has fallen. So Dr. Coleman thinks other factors are making parent-child estrangements likelier than ever. A rise in individualism that emphasizes personal happiness is the biggest factor. Realization of personal value has increasingly come to take the place of filial duty, says Dr. Coleman. In some ways it is a positive development: people find it easier to separate from parents who have been pushy. But it can also carry heavy costs. Another factor is that those who decide to break off contact with their parents find support online. Posts on internet forums for people who Want to break ties with their parents show strangers advising an immediate break in contact. This may make it easier to put aside their feelings of guilt. Raising awareness about the issue in this Way is likely to be important not only because some broken relationships may be fixable. Parent-child estrangement has negative effects beyond the heartbreak it causes. Research suggests that the habit of cutting off relatives is likely to spread in families. But most immediately, it is likely to increase loneliness in old age. 8. What is the function of the first paragraph? A. To explain a reason. B. To introduce the topic. C. To make a suggestion. D. To give an example. 9. What does the underlined word “it” in the third paragraph refer to? A. The research data B. The risk of divisions C. Family estrangement. D. Parent-child relationship. 10. How do adult children separate from their parents without feeling guilty? A. By finding support online. B. By seeking personal happiness. C. By performing filial duty. D. By posting on Internet forums. 11. What is the direct negative effect of parent-child estrangement? A. Causing heartbreak. B. Breaking parent-child relationships. C. Leading to awful loneliness in old age. D. Spreading the habit of cutting off relatives. D When I was a child, I often saw my Grandma throwing bread that was no longer fresh to birds. Not surprisingly, this attracted few birds. Later on, we discovered bird food at the local store. Feeding garden birds in the UK has come a long way since then. Today, the birds can enjoy many kinds of food: from plant seeds to sunflower hearts and from cakes to meat balls. All this comes at a huge cost of about £200m a year. Sometimes, I wonder if we might be feeding our garden birds better than our kids. But maybe it’s worth it. Our generosity is having an important effect on the behavior and even evolution of these birds. Take the goldfinch for example. In the 1960s, this was a rare bird. Today, goldfinches can be seen in many gardens. Other new visitors include the spotted woodpecker, which has left its usual woodland for food on bird tables. Evolution is meant to progress slowly: over thousands of years. Yet during the past few decades, the beaks of many kinds of birds have become longer because birds with longer beaks can get more food, and then are more likely to live on. Actually, the British habit of feeding garden birds goes back much further. During the sixth century, St Serf of Fife fed a robin in his garden; during the winter of 1890, workers in London were seen giving their lunches to songbirds. The real change took place in the 1980s, when a few farsighted businessmen realized that encouraging the British to be more generous to garden birds can help them make money. Therefore, various kinds of bird food and modern bird feeders were produced. As a result, the number of species using garden feeding stations increased very quickly, from about 10 to over 100. Then, in 2005, Springwatch came, which turned our love of garden birds into an entertainment show. Is bird feeding completely good for birds? Not everyone thinks so. Studies by the Zoological Society of London have shown that by bringing together many birds, bird feeders may help the spread of disease. In Australia, some bird experts believe—probably wrongly—that bird feeding creates a “dependence culture”. But we shouldn’t forget one major benefit of feeding garden birds—it connects millions of people to the natural world. This is especially important for people who seldom reach the wider countryside. As I write this, there comes some noise outside my window: several birds were singing and flying around in my garden. It’s a sight I could only imagine years ago, when feeding garden birds just meant throwing hard bread to them. 12. What does the author mean by saying the underlined part in Paragraph 1? A. Feeding garden birds is a huge waste of money. B. We spend quite a lot of money on the food of garden birds. C. We should care more for our kids rather than garden birds. D. Feeding garden birds can bring more joy than feeding kids. 13. Which is the reason behind the fact that many birds’ beaks become longer? A. These birds have given up traditional woodland. B. Food for these birds becomes richer and better. C. Longer beaks mean more chances of survival. D. These birds grow faster than ever before. 14. What do some bird experts in Australia think of bird feeding? A. It is completely good for birds. B. It may help the spread of disease. C. It connects more and more people to the natural world. D. It may reduce birds’ ability to find food by themselves. 15. How does the author feel when he hears bird noise outside his window? A. Annoyed. B. Pleased. C. Surprised. D. Bored. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Food For Feeling Good Did you know that healthy food is not only good or your body, it can help you feel happier, too? But looking back, I can see that a lot of little things had been slowly building up. The first one happened when I was taking care of my little brother and sister. “Oh, it’s already your bedtime!” I said as I looked at the clock, “Let’s put everything away.” “Not yet,” Indi said, dumping (倒出) out a bin full of blocks. What’s worse, Tex dumped two more bins. Right then, my mom stuck her head into the room. “Hi,” she said, “Why aren’t you two in bed?” “We’re making a village!” said Indi. “It’s beautiful” said my mom, “But it’s very late, so let’s go to brush your teeth! Oh, Jack, would you please put everything away?” “No fair,” I thought as I squashed (压制) down my feelings. The next day, Tex asked if he could play at his friend’s house, and my dad said, “Sure! Go and have fun!” Then I said, “I’m going to skateboard with my friend,” and my dad said, “Don’t you have that big homework to finish?” I squashed down my feelings again and went to do my homework unhappily. But that was not the end. As we got back home from a tiring trip, Tex and Indi raced inside for a snack. “I’m hungry too,” I said, heading after them. “Wait, honey,” my mom stopped me, “Give me a hand with these bags.” And my feelings couldn’t be squashed down any longer and turned into a volcanic explosion. “It’s not fair!” I shouted, “Tex and Indi get to do whatever they want whenever they want, but you and Dad never give me a break.” “I know I’m older,” I continued, “I know I’m responsible for more stuff than they are, but sometimes I wish things could be more fair!” Saying all that stuff out aloud made me feel much better but left my family completely at a loss. After an awkward silence my mom sighed, “Maybe we need a family meeting.” __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 2025-2026学年度上期期末学业质量监测 高一英语试卷 满分150分,考试时间120分钟 注意事项: 1. How much is the shirt? I truly regret what happened and feel terrible about it. The misunderstanding occurred because I misunderstood your comment about group discussions. I thought you were criticizing our team’s effort, which made me upset. However, after calming down, I realized that you were just sharing constructive feedback. To make up for this, I’d like to invite you to have lunch with me this Friday. We can talk more and hopefully clear up any remaining misunderstandings. Please let me know if you’re available. Yours, Li Hua 第二节 (满分20分) 【47题答案】 【答案】After an awkward silence, my mom sighed, “Maybe we need a family meeting.” That night, we gathered around the dining table, where my parents and I sat together. I began, “Mom, Dad, I feel like I don’t get enough attention. When I wanted to do well in school or help out with the housework, I felt like I was always being pushed aside.” My parents listened quietly, their expressions softening. Then, my mom spoke, “We appreciate everything you do, Jack. We love you just the way you are, but sometimes we need to hear what you have to say too.” I looked at them, feeling a sense of relief and understanding. That night, I fell asleep feeling a little lighter, knowing that my family was working together to make things more fair for me. 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
