Unit 3 Diverse Cultures 素能综合测评
第一部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、 B、 C、 D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
English market towns to visit in the UK
English market towns come in many shapes and sizes. Each has a personality shaped by the goods and services produced and traded for centuries. But each town has more to do than shop.
Hereford, Herefordshire
Hereford has remained a lively market town since 1189. Skirting the town square, you’ll find lovely shops, eateries, and the Black and White House Museum. The Hereford Cathedral is the most impressive building in town. It’s also home to an ancient library. One of the four original copies of the Magna Carta is displayed there.
Ludlow, Shropshire
Ludlow is known as the Foodie Center of England. Butcher shops, greengrocers, bakeries, and cheese shops line the town square. Bordering the square, the Ludlow Castle is a “must explore” medieval stronghold. The three-day Ludlow Food Festival is held each September.
Shrewsbury, Shropshire
Getting to Shrewsbury Town Center from London is challenging but worth the anxiety. The River Severn has a significant turn through town, almost making an island of Shrewsbury Town Center. The shape creates a perfect market where goods could be shipped and received using the river as a highway. Flowers are everywhere—hanging baskets, window boxes, and planters—just what you imagine in an attractive English market town.
Mevagissey, Cornwall
Even if you haven’t been to the small fishing village Mevagissey, you’ve probably seen it in a movie or British TV show. The working harbor(港口) took shape in 1774. Fishermen go out to sea daily and sell their fish in harbor-side markets. Don’t leave the harbor without a traditional Cornish pie. It’s delicious.
( )1. Where can you find an original copy of the Magna Carta?
A. In the Ludlow Castle.
B. In the Foodie Center of England.
C. In the Hereford Cathedral.
D. In the Black and White House Museum.
( )2. What is a feature of Shrewsbury Town Center?
A. It’s situated near a big island.
B. It’s almost surrounded by water.
C. It’s known for its flower festival.
D. It’s easily accessible from London.
( )3. What does the author advise visitors to do in Mevagissey?
A. Try the Cornish pie.
B. Watch a British TV show.
C. Go fishing in the sea.
D. Take pictures of the harbor.
B
Music filled the silence of the practice room. Our teacher made the dance look so easy when she was demonstrating it herself. Her movements flowed naturally with the rhythm of the music. She looked at herself in the mirror, her eyes filled with confidence. Her dancing appealed to me.
Finishing the demonstration, she told us, “It’s your time to shine!” Over the course of four months, we practiced week after week as we prepared for our final performance: a real performance with an actual audience. That thought of standing onstage in front of a cheering crowd gave me instant stage fright.
In the beginning, we felt motivated and energetic even after hours of dancing. We’d even grab drinks together after rehearsal(排练) and evaluate our own mistakes from the sessions. However, after a couple of weeks, our movements weren’t the same as usual. Some of my classmates no longer cared about the performance; others no longer felt motivated to improve their dancing abilities. So why did we continue practicing if we didn’t even plan to finish it?
Matching the teacher’s dancing was an impossible goal. But I still used the course as a chance to start improving, even if it meant that I started at the very bottom. I didn’t pressure myself to perfect the choreography(编舞). I let that pressure move through my body instead, until I no longer saw myself in the mirror memorizing steps but actually dancing to the music.
On the day of the performance, recalling the way my teacher danced that first day, I entered the stage. I couldn’t see the audience through the bright spotlights. It was all dark around us, which made me less nervous. I only focused on my body, my mind, and the music. My mind was empty; I lost myself in the dance. I succeeded. And I knew at that moment, I engaged others, too.
( )4. What do we know about the author’s teacher?
A. She proved dance learning was easy.
B. She enjoyed dancing with others.
C. She showed a positive self-identity.
D. She was strict with students.
( )5. What occurred to some classmates after weeks of rehearsal?
A. They stopped practicing completely.
B. They lost enthusiasm for practicing.
C. They focused on other things instead.
D. They avoided social interaction.
( )6. How did the author practice dancing?
A. By observing every small step.
B. By arranging the movements.
C. By prolonging practice hours.
D. By co-existing with pressure.
( )7. What is the suitable title for the text?
A. Dancing my way to success
B. A rewarding dance rehearsal
C. Forgetting fright in dance
D. The power of dance practice
C
It’s a late summer afternoon at Lon-Men’s Noodle House. With the lunchtime rush over, the waiting staff are sitting down to eat while the chefs(主厨) are preparing the stew. The restaurant’s owner, Hsien-Kuo Ting, is joking with staff. This place is always busy, with both locals and tourists, and even famous people have visited it.
It is one of the most popular Chinese restaurants on Kantstrasse, a lively street in Berlin. “Kantstrasse is an attractive place where everyone wants to go,” says researcher Kimiko Suda. “It’s not what some people of mainstream German society call a culturally independent area where its people try to keep their culture different from that surrounding them. However, Kantstrasse is a really popular area within mainstream German society.”
While there are records of the Chinese coming to Germany in the 1820s, it was in the late 19th century that Chinese students started to arrive. Many of them studied at TU Berlin. With the Chinese Embassy(大使馆), a major railway station and the university all close to Kantstrasse, writer Frank Hoffmann says it became a small Chinatown specifically for Chinese students. “It was very convenient for them to live in and around Kantstrasse to go to their lessons,” historian Erich Gütinger says.
However, today’s Chinese restaurateurs do not have a similar promising future. K. Wong manages Aroma, another well-known Chinese restaurant. Despite being one of the second generation of restaurateurs within the family, Wong doesn’t see a third coming out. Her children work in offices and it’s not easy to find excellent new chefs in Berlin. “The rents are also rising,” she says.
Ting was preparing to retire at the end of 2023, with the eldest of his three sons managing the restaurant. So Ting would see a third generation of restaurateurs in the family. He is also finding it difficult to hire new professionals who are skilled at Chinese cooking. “But I want to see dining culture from China expand(发展) from here across Berlin,” he says.
( )8. Which of the following can best describe Lon-Men’s Noodle House?
A. It is badly short of hands.
B. It gets many new opportunities.
C. It is a very successful business.
D. It has fewer and fewer customers.
( )9. What does Kimiko Suda say about Kantstrasse?
A. It is mostly visited by Chinese people.
B. It has been changed greatly by German culture.
C. It has become part of mainstream German culture.
D. It tries to keep its culture different from other cultures.
( )10. What does Paragraph 3 mainly discuss?
A. Why Kantstrasse attracted many Chinese students.
B. Why Chinese people came to Germany in the 1820s.
C. How Kantstrasse was influenced by Chinese restaurants.
D. How Chinese people began to open restaurants in Berlin.
( )11. Which of the following concerns both Wong and Ting?
A. The running costs are rising rapidly.
B. It is difficult to hire excellent cooks.
C. Their children don’t like Chinese cooking.
D. People show less interest in Chinese dishes.
D
In the lively borough(行政区) of Queens, New York City, there is a street called Roosevelt Avenue that runs through some of the most culturally diverse neighborhoods on Earth. Spanish, Bengali, Punjabi, Mixtec, Seke, and Kuranko are among the hundreds of languages spoken here. Nepalese dumplings, Korean noodles, Mexican tortas, Colombian empanadas, Thai curries, and spicy South Indian vindaloos are just some of the many food choices. Passing from one block to the next can feel like crossing different countries.
Walk around the 74th Street subway station, and you will find the neighborhood is heavily South Asian—mostly people of Bangladeshi, Indian, and Nepalese origin. Seemingly everywhere in Roosevelt’s path, there is a sense of the “old country”—of memories that haven’t faded over long stretches of distance and time. You feel it in some stores along Diversity Plaza, where people line up to send money and packages to relatives back home, relatives they haven’t seen in years and might not ever see again.
And you certainly feel it when you step into the United Sherpa Association, a community center now serving more than 12,000 Himalayan Sherpas, the largest population living outside Nepal. “Our seniors set up this organization,” says Temba Sherpa, the group’s vice president, “to prevent the younger generations here from forgetting who they are. They didn’t want us to lose the sense of belonging.”
The United Sherpa Association is a central meeting point of the community—where people gather for meals and share opportunities. There are also classes to teach the Sherpa language and traditions to new generations born in the US.
For hundreds of years, Sherpas have made their livelihoods in the Himalayas, raising yaks and crops in the high mountains. And in recent years they’ve also become known for their work as climbing guides on Mount Qomolangma. Since the 1990s, Sherpas have left Nepal in large numbers. Many have come to the area around Roosevelt Avenue.
( )12. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. People living in Queens have to learn different languages.
B. You can experience many different cultures on the street.
C. Roosevelt Avenue is a popular place for foreign visitors.
D. Crossing the street is highly comfortable and exciting.
( )13. What do people living along Roosevelt Avenue have in common?
A. They like to buy things from foreign countries.
B. They prefer to spend time with relatives living here.
C. They feel a strong emotional connection with their motherland.
D. They lead an easy life in their less competitive communities.
( )14. Why was the United Sherpa Association founded?
A. To develop the spirit of community.
B. To help Nepal become a stronger country.
C. To let Americans know more about Sherpas.
D. To protect New York Sherpas’ cultural identity.
( )15. What is the author’s purpose in writing the last paragraph?
A. To add some background information.
B. To summarize the previous paragraphs.
C. To introduce a new topic for discussion.
D. To provide some advice for readers.

Some people describe American society as a salad bowl while others see it as a melting pot. In a bowl of freshly tossed salad, all the ingredients are mixed together. 16 . All the ingredients of a salad contribute to the finished product. They may be covered with the same dressing, but the green vegetables, tomatoes and eggs can all be seen as what they were.
17 . Individual ethnic groups blend together, yet keep their cultural uniqueness. People may work together during the day in the same companies, but at night they may return to their ethnic communities where their own individual culture directs their way of life.
The other concept, which is also used to describe American society, is the melting pot. 18 and give up a bit of what they were to become a new thing. The longer the soup is cooked, the better the taste will be and the more likely it will be for the mixture to dissolve. In this sense, America can surely be seen as a melting pot where people from all over the world come to live and work together forming one nation.
There are dozens of shared symbols. 19 . In such a culture, symbols like the national flag and the anthem(国歌) serve to break down the walls which separate ethnic groups.
Whether a salad bowl or a melting pot, America can best be described as a mixture of both. 20 .
A. Both are incorrect depending upon one’s point of view
B. From this point of view, America is very much like a salad bowl
C. All of the ingredients are mixed together losing their identity
D. That is to say, America is a nation where there is unity in diversity
E. Thus, one needs to abandon one’s culture to be considered “American”
F. They never lose their shape, form, or identity
G. They serve to develop the various ethnic groups to create a new American society

The Duncan family lived a simple and peaceful life in the Springs Town. Mr Duncan worked in a bank and Mrs Duncan was a nurse in their local hospital. Their two children Bob and Teddy studied in the Springs Primary School. It was a loving family. Every family member was always there for each other in times of need.
But one day, life decided to throw them a curve ball. Mr Duncan was laid off from his job. Disheartened as Mr Duncan was, he kept looking for another job but he got no response. Soon the family found themselves barely able to make ends meet. Mrs Duncan picked up extra shifts at the hospital where she worked, and even the children took on odd jobs to help their family financially.
Despite the challenges they faced, the family remained close. They cooked meals together, went out for walks in the neighborhood, and spent quality time together, always finding ways to lift each other’s spirits. Bob and Teddy always told the funny things happening in school to their parents and tried their best to amuse their daddy.
Months later, Mr Duncan received a call and he was given a chance to interview for a position in a major company. Mr Duncan got the job after the interview but the catch was that he was appointed to another state, far away from their current home.
Mr Duncan thought about it for a long time, knowing it was a fantastic opportunity to better provide for his family with the new job, but at the same time, he didn’t want to uproot his family and leave the house filled with memories and their neighbors who had become their friends. Realizing what they were faced with, Mr Duncan and Mrs Duncan made up their minds even if the move was tough. They asked Bob and Teddy to gather around the kitchen table, discussing the decision at hand.

第三部分 写作(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(满分15分)
Dear Jerry,
As for your last e-mail asking about the Traditional Chinese Culture Exhibition successfully held in the city last week, I’m writing to tell you some relevant details.
The exhibition presented collections of artworks, ranging from calligraphy works, paper-cuts to ink wash paintings and sculptures. What impressed me most were those colorful Chinese knots created by folk artists. Their delicate patterns convey good wishes from the past. While visiting, I not only immersed myself in the visual feast, but also gained deeper insights into Chinese culture.
All in all, this visit did offer me a golden opportunity to be completely involved in China’s profound history and splendid culture.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
Paragraph 1:
“I grew up here, and my best friends
The children were hesitant to move. “I grew up here, and my best friends are here. Mom, I don’t want to leave!” Teddy cried with tears rolling down his cheeks. Seeing that, Mr Duncan felt a sense of guilt, worry flooding in his heart and surging through him. However, he knew it was the right decision for his family’s future. Mrs Duncan knelt down, hugged her children and explained the reasons to them patiently. Eventually, they agreed to make the move.
Paragraph 2:
Upon reaching their new home, the family struggled to adjust and they felt alone at times. They missed their old house and friends so much that every night the family would gather to talk about what they missed and encourage each other. Despite the difficulties, the family remained a unit, always relying on each other for support. They visited new places, explored new surroundings and found comfort in sharing their experiences with one another. Before long, the family realized they had made new friends and that the new chapter in their lives had opened up amazing opportunities for them to start afresh and get closer.
