B I was sitting next to Missy in my 9th-grade world history class when Mrs. Bartlett announced (宣布) a new project: In groups, we were to create a newspaper about the culture we were studying. On a piece of paper, we wrote the names of three friends we wanted in our group. After collecting all the requests, Mrs. Bartlett told us that she would consider our choices and let us know the results the next day. After the bell rang the next day, Missy and I waited nervously as Mrs. Bartlett started to call out names. When she reached group three, Missy’s name was called. I would be in the same group, I thought, as I knew we had chosen each other. Then the other three names were called. Mine was not included. There must be a mistake! Then I heard it. The last group: Mauro, Juliette, Rachel, Karina! I could feel tears well in my eyes. How could I face being in that group—the boy, Mauro, who hardly spoke English and had no friends; Juliette, who was from West Asia, was always covered by long skirts; and the other girl who wore strange clothes. Oh, how I wanted to be with my friends! I fought back tears as I walked up to Mrs. Bartlett. Knowing what I was there for, she looked at me and gently placed a hand on my shoulder. “I know what you want, Karina,” she said, “but your group needs you. I need you to help them get a passing grade on this project. Will you help them?” I was amazed. She had seen something in me even I hadn’t seen. “Yes,” I replied. I couldn’t believe it came out of my mouth, but it did. I joined the group and guided our project. Through our hard work, we not only got an A but also developed new friendships. More importantly, I discovered my own hidden leadership and value. It was a lesson that was more than a simple newspaper. 29.What did Mrs. Bartlett ask her students to do in the new project? A.To give a report about their friends. B.To write a story about world history. C.To make a poster about different countries. B.It's important to wear nice clothes to school. C.We can discover our abilities by helping others. D.Teachers sometimes make mistakes in grouping students. C Artwork is lovely to look at, and it has the power to make people feel and think differently. But do you know that when people see a real work of art, rather than just looking at a photo of it, they are likely to experience stronger emotions (情绪)? Scientists recently carried out a study at the Mauritshuis museum in The Hague, a city in the Netherlands. The museum is home to Girl with a Pearl Earring, a very famous painting by Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer. It was painted in 1665. ① The researchers used eye-tracking equipment and a brain scanner to watch how people reacted to several paintings. First, the volunteers were asked to look at the real paintings on display, and then at photos of the artworks in the museum shop. ② It was shown that their emotional reactions (反应) were 10 times stronger when they looked at the real paintings. The most active part of the brain while looking at the artworks was the area that controls people’s personal identity (身份) and consciousness (意识). ③ How did that happen? According to the study, people may experience something called a “sustained attentional loop” when they watch a certain painting. The volunteers’ attention was first drawn to the girl’s left eye, then her mouth, then to her pearl earring. This certain order of eye movements repeated in a continuous loop. Each time they completed the cycle, their focus became stronger and their connection with Girl with a Pearl Earring was deeper, which meant that people stared at the painting for longer. Martin de Munnik, one of the researchers in this study, said, “That means you have to pay attention whether you want to or not.” It was as if the painting itself had a power to hold the viewers’ attention and guide their eye movement in a very involuntary (无意识的) way. ④ The director of the Mauritshuis, Martine Gosselink, said that the study shows how important it is to go and see art in real life, whether it’s paintings, photography or dancing. She added, “it really helps develop your brain.” The researchers are now eager to broaden their study, planning to visit other museums and do similar experiments on works like the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci. 33.What is the purpose of the study? A.To explain different ways to study a painting. B.To check people’s interest in museum paintings. C.To find differences between a painting and its photo. D.To watch people’s reactions to real art and its photos. 34.We can put the following sentence “The team also found that the group reacted even more strongly to Girl with a Pearl Earring.” in ________. A.① B.② C.③ D.④ 35.How does the writer introduce the “sustained attentional loop”? A.By giving an example. B.By telling a story. C.By listing numbers. D.By offering advice. 36.What is the best title of the passage? A.The Power of Real Works of Art B.Lessons from Real Works of Art C.The Way to Enjoy Real Works of Art D.A Visit to Real Works of Art D Smile! It makes everyone in the room feel better because they are smiling with you. Growing evidence shows that an instinct (本能) for facial mimicry (模仿) allows us to understand and even experience other people’s feelings. If we can’t mirror another person’s face, it limits our ability to read and properly react to their expressions. A review of this emotional mirroring appears on February 11 in Trends in Cognitive Sciences. In their paper, Paula Niedenthal and Adrienne Wood, social psychologists at the University of Wisconsin, describe how people in social situations copy others’ facial expressions to create emotional responses in themselves. For example, if you’re with a friend who looks sad, you might “try on” that sad face yourself without realizing you’re doing so. In “trying on” your friend’s expression, it helps you to recognize what they’re feeling by connecting with times in the past when you made that expression. Humans get this emotional meaning from facial expressions in a matter of only a few hundred milliseconds. “You reflect on your emotional feelings and then you form some sort of recognition judgment, and the most important thing that results in is that you take the right action—you go near the person or you avoid the person,” Niedenthal says. “Your own emotional reaction to the face changes how you see the face in such a way that provides you with more information about what it means.” A person’s ability to recognize and “share” others’ emotions can be prevented when they can’t mimic faces. This is a common complaint for people with motor diseases like facial paralysis (瘫痪) caused by nerve damage from plastic surgery (手术). Niedenthal notes that the same would not be true for people who suffer from paralysis from birth, because if you’ve never had the ability to mimic facial expressions, you will have developed other ways of recognizing emotions. People with social disorders like autism (自闭症), can also experience similar challenges. “There are some symptoms in autism where lack of facial mimicry may in part be due to limitation of eye contact (接触),” Niedenthal says. Niedenthal next wants to explore what part in the brain is functioning to help with facial expression recognition. A better understanding of that part, she says, will give us a better idea of how to treat related disorders. 37.According to the passage, facial mimicry helps ________. A.react to others’ expressions properly B.change others’ emotions quickly C.develop friendship with others easily D.experience one’s own feelings clearly 38.What can we learn from Paragraph 4 and Paragraph 5? A.People with motor diseases may also suffer from autism. B.People born with facial paralysis may still recognize emotions. C.People with social disorders can’t have eye contact with others. D.People receiving plastic surgery have difficulty in copying faces. 39.According to Niedenthal, the next step of the study will focus on ________. A.how we can treat brain disorders B.what can be done to regain facial mimicry C.how our brain helps us with emotional mirroring D.what part of our brain helps recognize facial expressions 40.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage? A.To discuss how people react positively to others’ smiles. B.To draw people’s attention to those with social disorders. C.To introduce people’s ability to recognize facial expressions. D.To explain how emotional mirroring helps people feel for others. Imagine flying through space, diving deep under the sea, and traveling around the world. Its secondary creations from Wang Bo have got over 100 47 (million) views, from mainland social media to Taiwan’s online platforms. It seems like a “meme (表情包) work”, but it holds the shared ideas of people on both sides. The song comes from a public speech given a few years ago. Mainland netizens cut its sharp words, then added an attention-getting voice 48 (make) the song. Its popularity comes from 49 (touch) lyrics (歌词): “We should have been calm and easy. But now we are in peace, stumbling along... Why are you crying? No ambition!” When the lyrics match the speaker slapping the table 50 (angry), the contrast makes the song memorable. The song’s success is not by chance. It shows shared 51 (culture) roots (根源) of both sides. Its spread follows a clear way “Taiwan materials →mainland creations→popular on both sides”. The speech clips (片段) 52 (create) again by mainland netizens. Later, the song went back to Taiwan and started a creation trend. This voluntary folk interaction shows that both sides share 53 same culture. People on both sides connect with the lyrics for their real-life description. The difference 54 “calm” and “struggling” tells middle-aged people’s helplessness facing life pressure. Mainland listeners sigh (叹息), “It feels like talking about my calm.” 55 some tried to make it political (政治的), netizens still joined in creations happily. Taiwan’s China Times said this folk cultural exchange is natural-over-interpreting it is “no ambition”. A.The Power of Real Works of Art B.Lessons from Real Works of Art C.The Way to Enjoy Real Works of Art D.A Visit to Real Works of Art 【答案】33.D 34.B 35.A 36.A 【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要讲述了科学家在荷兰海牙的莫里茨皇家美术馆进行的一项研究,该研究发现人们看到真实的艺术作品时比看其照片时的情绪反应更强烈,并解释了原因,强调了欣赏真实艺术作品的重要性。 33. 根据第三段“The researchers used eye-tracking equipment and a brain scanner to watch how people reacted to several paintings. First, the volunteers were asked to look at the real paintings on display, and then at photos of the artworks in the museum shop.” 根据第二段“The museum is home to Girl with a Pearl Earring, a very famous painting by Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer.”可知,莫里茨皇家美术馆有《戴珍珠耳环的少女》这幅画,再结合第四段“It was shown that their emotional reactions (反应) were 10 times stronger when they looked at the real paintings.”可知,人们看真画时的情绪反应比看照片时强烈10倍,所以“The team also found that the group reacted even more strongly to Girl with a Pearl Earring.” 根据第五段“How did that happen? According to the study, people may experience something called a ‘sustained attentional loop’ when they watch a certain painting. The volunteers’ attention was first drawn to the girl’s left eye, then her mouth, then to her pearl earring.” 故选A。 36. 根据第一段“But do you know that when people see a real work of art, rather than just looking at a photo of it, they are likely to experience stronger emotions (情绪)?” A。 D Smile! 根据“If we can’t mirror another person’s face, it limits our ability to read and properly react to their expressions.” 故选A。 38. 根据“Niedenthal notes that the same would not be true for people who suffer from paralysis from birth, because if you’ve never had the ability to mimic facial expressions, you will have developed other ways of recognizing emotions.” 根据“Niedenthal next wants to explore what part in the brain is functioning to help with facial expression recognition.” 根据“Growing evidence shows that an instinct (本能) for facial mimicry (模仿) allows us to understand and even experience other people’s feelings.” Imagine flying through space, diving deep under the sea, and traveling around the world.
