I remember the day during our first week of class when we were informed about our semester (学期) project of volunteering at a non-profit organization. When the teacher introduced us to the different organizations that needed our help, my last choice was Operation Iraqi Children (OIC). My first impression of the organization was that it was not going to make enough of a difference with the plans I had in mind.
Then, an OIC representative gave us some details, which somewhat interested me. After doing some research, I believed that we could really do something for those kids. When I went online to the OIC website, I saw pictures of the Iraqi children. Their faces were so powerful in sending a message of their despair (绝望) and need that I joined this project without hesitation. We decided to collect as many school supplies as possible, and one kit (一套), one child.
The most rewarding day for our group was project day, when all the efforts we put into collecting the items finally came together. When I saw the various supplies we had collected, it hit me that every kit we were to build that day would eventually be in the hands of an Iraqi child. Over the past four months, I had never imagined how I would feel once our project was completed. While making the kits, I realized that I had lost sight of the true meaning behind it. I had only focused on the fact that it was another school project and one I wanted to get good grade on. When the kits were completed, and ready to be sent overseas, the warm feeling I had was one I would never forget.
In the beginning, I didn’t imagine making a difference in the life of another person. Now that our project is over, I realize that I have affected not only one life, but ten, With our efforts, ten young boys and girls will now be able to further their education.

C. further their education D. study in foreign countries

B. First impression cannot always be trusted.

China is recognized as a world leader in the development of artificial intelligence and facial recognition systems. A Chinese company says it has created a new facial recognition system that can identify people even if they are wearing masks. Engineers at the Beijing-based company say their system is the first to be created to effectively identify people wearing face masks.
The company told a news agency that a team of 20 people built the system in about a month. The system is based on existing technologies developed over the past 10 years. The process involved adding a collection of about 6 million unmasked faces and a much smaller collection of masked faces, the company said.
The company is now selling two main kinds of products that use the new technology. One performs “single channel" recognition, which is designed to be used at the entrances to buildings.
The other product is a “multi-channel!” recognition system that uses groups of surveillance (监视) cameras. It can identify individuals in a crowd of up to 30 people within a second.
“When people are wearing a mask that covers the mouth and the nose, the recognition rate can reach about 95%, which can ensure that most people can be identified,” said Huang, vice president of the company. He added that the system's success rate for people not wearing a mask is about 99.5%.
However, the new system struggles to identify people wearing both a mask and sunglasses. "In this situation, all of the key facial information is lost. In such cases recognition is tough." Huang said.
People were reacting differently to the new technology. While some citizens have been against using such tools, the majority have accepted the technology as an elective way to decrease crime and catch criminals.
46. What did the company do to build the system?
A. They gathered many face images. B. They employed hundreds of people.
C. They used the latest technology. D. They spent about a decade building it.
47. According to the passage, which of the following can be true?
A. The new system has already been used by the police.
B. The recognition rate of masked faces is about 99.5%.
C. It's hard to recognize people with masks and sunglasses.
D. The single channel product is as powerful as the multi-channel.
48. Which of the key facial information might have the biggest impact on recognition rate?
A One's hair. B. One's nose. C. One's mouth. D. One's eyes.
49. According to the passage, which kinds of people may use the new system?
A. Physicians. B. Clowns. C. Policemen. D. Lawyers.
50. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To show conflicting attitudes toward the system. B. To introduce a new facial recognition system.
C. To advertise two products of facial recognition. D. To show the advantages of facial recognition.

A woman in Lakewood, Washington, wanted to find a boy who left $5 and a heartbreaking apology note on her doorstep. On Friday, Marie found this note from “Jake”:
“I am sorry that I took your butterfly wind chimes (风铃) without your permission. My mom died and she liked butterflies so I took them to put by our window. Now I feel terrible for my past behavior. I am sorry. This is the only money I have. Please do not be mad at me.”
Marie told KCPQ she was not mad and wanted to find Jake to return his $5. “I wanted to cry because apparently he felt bad for what he had done. And I think he might be scared,” she told the station. Marie said she knows stealing is immoral, but she is sympathetic to the child. “I’m not agreeing with the stealing act but he did try to make up for what he had done. I lost my mom at a young age so I really make sense of his feeling and know how hard it is,” she said.
Marie wanted to find Jake, not to punish him, but to return his money for his honesty. Marie moved to the neighborhood two months ago and didn’t know many people there, which made tracking down Jake difficult.
In order to find the boy, she took to Facebook. Almost a week later, her Facebook post got much attention from social media, but she still didn’t hear from the boy. Marie said she wanted Jake to know that she had no intention of embarrassing or scaring him by asking him to reveal himself. She also said she was willing to help Jake with his schooling if she could find him.

While some citizens have been against using such tools the majority have accepted the technology as an elective way to decrease crime and catch criminals.
46. What did the company do to build the system?
A. They gathered many face images. B. They employed hundreds of people.
C. They used the latest technology. D. They spent about a decade building it.

根据第二段“The system is based on existing technologies developed over the past 10 years. The process involved adding a collection of about o million unmasked faces and a much smaller collection of masked faces, the company said.”(该系统基于过去10年开发的现有技术。 故选A
根据第六段“However, the new system struggles to identify people wearing both a mask and sunglasses. "In this situation, all of the key facial information is lost. In such cases recognition is tough." Huang said.”(然而,新系统很难识别戴着面具和太阳镜人。“在这种情况下,所有关键的面部信息都丢失了。在这种情况下,很难辨认。”黄说)可知,新系统很难识别同时戴口罩和太阳镜的人因为所有关键的面部信息都会丢失。故选C项。
【48题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第五段“people are wearing a mask that covers the mouth and the nose the recognition rate can reach about 95%.”(当人们戴上遮住口鼻的口罩时,识别率可以达到95%左右)这说明人面部的口、鼻对识别率影响不大;第六段中提到“the new system struggles to identify people wearing both a mask and sunglasses. ”对于同时戴口罩和太阳镜的人,新系统就很难识别。由此可以推断,没有眼睛这一面部信息,系统的识别率就受到影响,这说明眼睛对识别率的影响比较大。故选D项。
【49题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“People were reacting differently to the new technology. While some citizens have been against using such tools, the majority have accepted the technology as an elective way to decrease crime and catch criminals.”(人们对新技术的反应各不相同。
通读全文,根据文章第一段“A Chinese company says it has created a new facial recognition system that can identify people even if they are wearing masks.”(一家中国公司表示,他们开发了一种新的面部识别系统,即使人们戴着口罩也能识别他们。)
