The Big Race
“You got this! Keep going!”
The cheering of the crowd filled my mind as I continued to push myself forward. “I can’t 1 now,” I thought. All my hard work came down to this moment.
Before the race, I had spent several months waking up early each morning. The cool air swept through me as I ran out the front door, greeted by the 2 streets. The world became my very own training ground. This time was my favourite time of day.
I was born into a “running family”. My parents have taken part in many marathons (马拉松). My brother has followed in their steps and competes in at least 4 races in a year. Unlike him, I didn’t 3 fall into the running life. I put up a fight.
“Running is the best thing for you. I don’t know how people can 4 it,” my dad questioned during many dinner conversations.
“You would be a fool not to join the track (田径) team, Colleen,” my mom said seriously.
“Of course I will.” I replied impatiently. “What could be more fun than running?”
To my surprise, hundreds of practices and a few track meets later, I found myself in 5 with my parents, as I had come to enjoy running.
Then came the time when my dad asked the big question. “So, the marathon is in November. What are you thinking?”
“Yeah, let’s do it!” The words suddenly came out before I could fully consider the question. I couldn’t 6 him. He had been expecting me to run a marathon with him for years.
At mile marker 20, my legs began to lose feeling. I saw the times on the side and knew that I wouldn’t finish the race in my expected time, a goal that I promised my dad I would reach. Just then I noticed my father looking back and smiling at me. Suddenly, I felt that the goal did not 7 any more. My legs carried me forward with renewed energy.
The finish line was in sight. “There she is!” My dad cheered on.

I started working at a new company. A reorganization was happening right as I got there, and tensions (紧张) were high. I decided to do something about it.
I 1 out little paper ponds (池塘) from blue paper I found in the copy room. I made eighteen of these ponds with little paper lily pads (睡莲浮叶) and reed grass, waited for everyone to go home, and dropped them around the office.
And then I 2 180 tiny multicolored plastic ducks all over the office—in the paper ponds, in the break rooms, on the copiers. I came into work the next day like nothing had happened, and watched everyone slowly become aware that they were completely surrounded (包围) by tiny ducks. There were still people in the office who didn’t know where the duck ponds were from, but I came clean by the end of the day to my direct coworkers, because everyone was 3 if they were allowed to take the ducks and I needed to tell them YES!
Over the next few weeks, the ducks moved from the ponds to people’s desks. Many people started 4 color sets and arranging their ducks in a pattern (图案). A few of the empty ponds were relocated to people’s desks to 5 their duck families. One coworker told me she had a duck to stand for each of her family members. Another came to me looking for a red duck because it was the only 6 they were missing from their lineup. People from other buildings started coming over to ours to see the ponds and take a duck. Like tourists.
But it didn’t end there. Soon other 7 started showing up in the ponds, and it certainly wasn’t me that was doing it. There were rabbits one week and frogs the next. Dogs, fish, turtles—there was a new wave of tiny animals every few days, seemingly all from different people. My new boss has a bag of tiny sea animals at her desk now, and she gives them out to whoever wants them. At this point it is almost 8 to find a desk that doesn’t have at least one tiny animal on it.
Small acts of kindness and tiny gifts at work started a kindness revolution, creating a wave of goodwill.

The weeks leading up to the race were filled with controlled practices and a strict diet. I loved the pleasure of passing people as my strength overtook (超过) their speed.

I crossed the finish line with a sense of 8 . I didn’t reach my goal, but I achieved something more on that morning. I even couldn’t wait to do it again.

Passage 2
(2025·北京西城·一模)

Life’s Lemonade
Steve seemed always silent and didn’t have any friend. His teacher Mr. Brown noticed this. One day, he asked Steve to 1 him after class. Mr. Brown said, “I see that you don’t talk to anyone. What’s wrong?” Steve replied, “Sir, I have a difficult 2 . I have to face some sad incidents (事件) and I keep thinking about them. Because of this, I can’t focus my attention on anything and don’t even feel like talking to anyone.”
Mr. Brown listened carefully, thought for a while and said, “Would you like some lemonade?” Steve felt a little 3 and nervously replied, “Yes, thank you!”
While preparing lemonade, Mr. Brown added more 4 on purpose and kept the amount (数量) of sugar low. Steve made a strange face as soon as he drank a bit of that lemonade. Seeing this, Mr. Brown asked, “You don’t like it?” “Um... There is just a little too much salt in it.” Steve answered.
Mr. Brown stopped him, “Oh, it doesn’t matter. I will throw it away.” As the teacher was 5 the glass to take it away, Steve stopped him and said, “Sir, please don’t throw it away. If we put a little more sugar in the lemonade, it will be fine to drink.”
Hearing this, Mr. Brown said 6 , “This is what I want to hear from you. We don’t need to remove (去除) the salt from lemonade to 7 its taste. We can just add some sugar to it. Similarly, we cannot remove sad things that have already happened to us, but we can add sweetness of good experiences to our life. If you keep on crying about your past, your present won’t be right and the future won’t be bright, either.”
Steve realized his problem and promised to live a 8 life. From then on, he tried to enjoy every day with more courage and hope. He began talking to classmates and sharing small laughs.
