Here are some of your best choices worldwide if you only have limited time for
travel.
Santorini, Greece
With its unique blue-roofed churches, whitewashed buildings and colorful beaches,
the island is a dream place for photographers. Also, some archaeologically (考古地)
significant sites are worth a visit. Locals like to say there's more wine than water on
the island where it doesn't often rain.
Machu Picchu, Peru
As one of the Seven Wonders of the World, Machu Picchu is one of the most-visited
attractions in Peru. Visitors are particularly attracted by Temple of the Condor, a rock
temple carved to look like the impressive bird in its name. Book tickets in advance, as
only 2,500 people can visit Machu Picchu each day.
Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Everything is bigger and better in Dubai, which has various enjoyable sites, including
water-parks, shopping malls and even an indoor ski spot. Though you're likely to pay
a pretty penny for a trip to Dubai, you can save a little cash by visiting during summer
months.
Maui, Hawaii
Maui is home to some of the island's best-known attractions and beaches. Besides,
you can explore the world's largest volcano that's resting, Haleakala. This is Hawaii,
so your trip will be on the high-priced side. Maui has most beaches, with red, white
and black sand.

In the small town of Elmsworth, life usually followed the changing of seasons
and familiar faces that could be seen around. However, when a powerful tornado
swept through the town, it destroyed many things in its path, including the Anderson
family's home.
The Andersons, known for their friendly and welcoming nature, suddenly found
themselves in a difficult situation. The news of their trouble spread quickly among the
people of Elmsworth. A group of neighbours, led by the town's elders, wasted no time
jumping into action to offer support to the Andersons.
Volunteers from all walks of life gathered at the site of the ruined home, armed
with tools, materials, and a determination to rebuild not just a house, but a sense of
safety and warmth. The local store offered a discount on the necessary supplies, and
nearby people provided food and shelter for the Andersons during the rebuilding
process. The high school's sports teams, known for their competitive spirit, took a
break from their training to contribute their strength and energy to the rebuilding
efforts. The walls of the new home began to rise, brick by brick, with each part
showing the care and contribution of the Elmsworth people.
As the days turned into weeks, the spirit of teamwork strengthened. A local artist,
inspired by the collective effort, painted a mural (壁画) on a nearby building, which
presented the image of the Anderson family surrounded by the faces of their
neighbours, showing the love and strength that held them together. The recovery of
Elmsworth in the face of disaster became a symbol of hope for other towns facing
similar challenges.
14. What can we learn about the Anderson family?

The word “manifest” has been chosen as Cambridge Dictionary’s Word of the
Year for 2024.
Manifest isn’t a new word; it’s been used since at least the 1400s to mean “clear”
or “obvious”. But as time went on, it had different meanings. Its modern meaning —
“to imagine achieving something you want, with the belief that imagining it will make
it happen” — was first used in the early 1900s. This is the version (版本) of the word
that’s become popular today.
Cambridge Dictionary’s Wendalyn Nicols explained that the Word of the Year is
chosen based on three things: how popular the word is during the year, how it relates
to important events, and how interesting it is as a word. And “manifest” was certainly
popular — the word was looked up over 130, 000 times on the Cambridge Dictionary
website in 2024.
The word “manifest” gained traction thanks to celebrities (名人) like singer Dua
Lipa, US gymnast Simone Biles, and England soccer player Ollie Watkins, who all
said “manifesting” helped them achieve their goals.
“Manifesting is a big thing for me,” Dua Lipa told Time in April. The 2024 year
was a big year for the singer, as she headlined the legendary Glastonbury music festival in England in June. As she stood on the stage, she shared how she had
“manifested” the moment. “I’ve written this moment down and wished for it and
dreamed it and worked so hard,” she said to the crowd.
But not everyone is a fan of manifesting. Dr. Sander van der Linden, a
psychologist from Cambridge University, believes manifesting is just “magical
thinking” with no scientific proof that it actually works. “However, it is necessary to
understand the difference between the power of positive thinking and moving reality
with your mind — the former is healthy, while the latter is an unfounded belief,” he
said.
18. What can we infer from paragraph 2?
A. More people tend to dream big. B. Language can change over time.
C. Human imagination knows no limits. D. The meaning of a word matters most.
19. What does the underlined part “gained traction” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Got popular. B. Became clear. C. Remained important. D. Looked new.
20. What does Dua Lipa’s experience suggest?
A. She is proud of her confidence.
B. She enjoys every moment on stage.
C. She credited her success to manifesting.
D. She believed 2024 was a lucky year for singers.
21. What is Dr. Sander van der Linden’s attitude towards manifesting?
A. Surprised. B. Hopeful. C. Unconcerned. D. Doubtful.
D
Companies are used to celebrating addition. Profits, customers and share prices
should go up rather than fall. Larger numbers are a measure of career success:
managers get promoted by taking on more reports, running higher budgets and
earning bigger salaries.
Companies are not always against subtraction (减法). Though not a welcome one,
reducing costs is a necessary part of management, which is often undervalued. The
best bosses are those who take things away as well as add them on. That means
clearing time for employees to get work done. Meetings are almost always called by
bosses, but only some of them are useful. Shopify, an e-commerce company, began
the year by subtracting 12,000 meetings from their schedules, and reported a rise in
productivity as a result.
Subtraction is not just about removing day-to-day distractions (干扰). It’s also
{#{QQABSQQp4gCQkoTACB5rEQFOCgiYkIEiLKgMgUAUOAxiQRNAFIA=}#
about taking decisions to kill off projects and products that are going nowhere, and to
focus efforts on the most important parts. Peter Drucker, a management theorist, was
a supporter of “planned subtraction”, so that resources that are tied up in minor
activities are freed for more profitable use. Bosses should, he advised, always ask the
same question of every detail of the company: “If we did not do this, would it be any
different?”
In The Case for Good Jobs, a new book, Zeynep Ton of MIT Sloan School of
Management argues that doing less can often make sense. Costco, a famous American
supermarket that believes in the “smart loss of sales”, has purposely limited product
choices. That means it can focus its buying power more effectively, forecast demand
more accurately and use its employees’ time more productively. “Less” may not
sound like a great result for customers, but at some point choice is deeply tiring.
When you have spent more time trying to decide what to watch on a streaming service
than it takes to go to the cinema and watch the same film twice, few choices seem
pretty attractive.
22. Why does the author mention the company Shopify in paragraph 2?
A. To present a fact. B. To draw a conclusion.
C. To support an opinion. D. To make a comparison.
23. Which statement does Peter Drucker most likely agree with?
A. Companies should quit unpromising tasks.
B. Bosses should give up profits for resources.
C. Bosses shouldn’t remove everyday distractions.
D. Companies should focus on some unfinished work.
24. Which of the following measures is regarded as effective “doing less”
commercially?
A. Stores give customers more time to shop.
B. Cinemas run only one particular film a day.
C. Streaming websites upload more new movies.
D. Supermarkets offer a limited variety of goods.
25. What is the best title of the text?
A. The best companies celebrate addition.
B. The best bosses know how to subtract work.
C. Companies use numbers to measure success.
D. Smart bosses go against the idea of subtraction.AUOAxiQRNAFIA=}#
